Around this time last year, America caught a raging case of Challengers fever. The film, from Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino, portrays a trio of aspiring pro tennis players — pals Patrick (Josh O’Connor) and Art (Mike Faist) and Tashi (Zendaya) — jumping around in time from their frisky late teens to their resigned thirties with several stops in between. To reduce a gripping thriller to a gross oversimplification: everyone is in love with everyone else, and the sexy possibilities made it a meme overnight. What those memes acknowledged was what the movie boldly states: any love triangle is less interesting than three hot characters just getting it on together.
Since Fox’s Thursday night comedies premiered their latest seasons back in January — Season Three for Animal Control, and Season One for Going Dutch — both have seemed like they learned the lessons of Challengers. But did they really? These...

Gravitas Ventures has acquired U.S. and Canadian rights to Konstantin Khudyakov’s “I’m Beginning To See the Light” from Hoody Films. Starring Jack Huston, Abbie Cornish, Brandon T. Jackson, Jamie Chung, Lucy Punch, and Mark Boone Junior, the film is set for digital and cable video on-demand release in May.
Set against a “hauntingly beautiful coastal backdrop,” “I’m Beginning to See the Light” stars Huston as Ezra, a jazz musician who seeking solace in a remote lighthouse after losing his family in an unexpected tragedy. Becoming the lighthouse’s new keeper, Ezra “encounters kindred lost souls, each grappling with their own pasts,” according to a press release. “Through music, memory, and human connection, he begins to find new meaning in life.”
“I’ve always wanted to make a film about jazz and how music has the potential to help a person overcome grief and rediscover meaning in life,” said director Konstantin Khudyakov.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson recalled Matthew Perry helped calm his nerves while shooting his first show with a “Friends” anecdote.
While talking with Lisa Kudrow on his “Dinner’s on Me” podcast, Ferguson looked back to days on the set of “The Class” – a one-season show and among the “Modern Family” alum’s first – and remembered a shoot that was saved for him by Perry showing up and sharing a behind-the-scenes joke from his days on “Friends.”
“I remember we were shooting ‘The Class’ on the same stage that you shot ‘Friends’ on at Warner Brothers,” Ferguson said. “David [Krane] was very comfortable there, Jimmy Burrows was very comfortable there. And Matthew Perry was next door shooting the behind-the-scenes drama ‘Studio 60’ and he was dating a cast member of mine on ‘The Class’ but Matthew was the first one of you I met and became friends with.”

Nuked combines raunchy humor and heartfelt truths about relationships with a likable ensemble cast and lots of cannabis. Couples gather at an opulent dinner party and face a nuclear crisis, leading to surprising honesty and revelations. The film may be contrived and stretch believability in its plot, but still delivers an entertaining and thought-provoking experience.
In Nuked, a podcast host and her husband throw a birthday party while they're trying to conceive; the consequences are explosive. Nuked tickles the funny bone with raunchy humor, obscene language, and silly sight gags, but also delivers heartfelt truths about being honest in relationships. A likable ensemble cast overcomes the script's glaringly predictable aspects. There's no doubt about the overall conclusion once the characters are introduced and the premise takes hold, but good chemistry and the slapstick laughs go a long way.

As festivals have increasingly endeavored to showcase more diverse talent, benchmarks of inclusivity occasionally run the risk of feeling like a dutiful checklist.
The Bentonville Film Festival, though, has celebrated — and elevated — underrepresented voices since its inception. Returning for its 10th edition from June 10-16, the northwest Arkansas festival has always taken as its mission statement the centering of work from not only LGBTQ+ and Bipoc creators but also other historically marginalized groups.
That focus shouldn’t be surprising, given that the festival’s roots stretch back to the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, a nonprofit research organization the actor founded after noticing the disparity in female characters while watching TV series and movies with her daughter.
While co-founder Davis remains Bentonville Film Festival’s chair, president Wendy Guerrero and artistic director Drea Clark, with a combined 19 years of experience with the festival, provide stability and steerage.

Motherland spin-off Amandaland has been commissioned for a series at BBC Two, here are the details.
Motherland was a terrific sitcom created by Sharon Horgan, Holly Walsh, Helen Serafinowicz and Graham Linehan, who stepped away from the show after the first series. It chronicled the never ending stress of motherhood through the eyes of the perpetually put-upon Julia, (Anna Maxwell Martin), who tries to do the best she can as she battles with the ‘Alpha Mums’, led by the acerbic Amanda (Lucy Punch). She’s supported by her blunt best friend Liz (Diane Morgan) and stay at home Dad Kevin (Paul Brady).
Earlier this year, Horgan confirmed that the show had been quietly cancelled by the BBC, but she also revealed that a spin-off was in the early stages of development.
According to the British Comedy Guide, the spin-off will be called Amandaland, and a six episode series has been commissioned.

Featuring her mother Felicity, played by British acting icon Joanna Lumley, Amanda has to try and get her head around raising teenagers, dealing with modern motherhood horrors like teenage drinking, fake Instagram accounts and eco anxiety. After a brief spell of freedom, Anne (Philippa Dunne) is sucked back into being Amanda’s minion to help her navigate the social scene with the other parents at the children’s new school.

Fans clamored for Bad Teacher 2 after the success of the original, but the sequel has remained in development limbo since 2013. Cameron Diaz's retirement and negotiation struggles hampered progress on Bad Teacher 2, leaving its fate uncertain for now. If Bad Teacher 2 were to happen, the plot would likely focus on Elizabeth Halsey's new role as a guidance counselor, with the original cast returning.
Bad Teacher took audiences by storm with its irreverent humor and chemistry between Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz, leading to a demand for Bad Teacher 2. Directed by Jake Kasdan and written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, Cameron Diaz plays a foul-mouthed, gold-digging teacher, Elizabeth, who is more interested in finding a wealthy husband than educating her students. The stellar cast included Justin Timberlake as Scott Delacorte, Segel as gym teacher Russell Gettis, and Lucy Punch as Amy Squirrel, Elizabeth's goody-two-shoes nemesis.

BBC sitcom Motherland has ended, according to star Diane Morgan, but a spin-off starring Lucy Punch is in the works. Here are the details:
The BBC sitcom Motherland has been quietly cancelled by the BBC, series regular Diane Morgan has confirmed. In an interview with The Times (as picked up by Chortle), Morgan talked about the third series of her sitcom Mandy, which returns to BBC Two tonight. But when Morgan was asked whether Motherland had ended, she confirmed it had, saying, “I hate to say it, because I still get women running up to me with prams in the street asking me when it’s coming back”.
The last episode was the 2022 Christmas special.
However, Morgan also said that a spin-off about Lucy Punch’s character, Amanda, was being considered, saying, “It’ll live on through her. The ladies with the prams will be pleased, hopefully”.

It may have been mere months since Taskmaster series 15 ended, but the brand-new series 16 feels like it’s arrived at just the right time, giving us a chance to escape endlessly depressing talk of the latest celebrity criminal revelations and our world leaders’ somewhat “lalala can’t hear you” approach to climate change.
There’s a lot to live up to after the excellent last series, but Taskmaster series 16 has a promising line-up that fits the show’s tried-and-tested dysfunctional family dynamic. The ‘mum and dad’ figures of Julian Clary and Sue Perkins are joined by three distinctive ‘kids’: the ditsy persona of Lucy Beaumont, the intelligent fun of Susan Wokoma… and Sam Campbell, who is completely bonkers.
Although he’s probably the least UK-famous of this batch of contestants right now, he’s got serious comedy chops, winning the top prize at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2022 and appearing in some great sitcoms.

After several years in the works, British comedy sensation “Motherland” is getting a U.S. adaptation on ABC.
Variety understands ABC is close to signing a pilot order for an American remake of the hit BBC comedy. The show was previously set up at Hulu by Lionsgate, which has world distribution rights, but migrated to ABC — which is arguably a much broader platform — last year.
“Motherland” has aired on the BBC for three seasons since 2016. Set in a west London neighbourhood, the show follows a wacky group of mothers (and a father) who couldn’t be more different, but are united by the daily school run and a shared abhorrence for those who take parenting a little too seriously.
Produced by “Catastrophe” creator Sharon Horgan and Clelia Mountford’s Merman Television, the show is written by Horgan, Helen Serafinowicz, Graham Linehan and Holly Walsh. It first premiered on BBC Two...

John Slattery looks terrible. “I hate to dash your hopes,” the 60-year-old tells me down the phone from New York. “I’m in sweats. I’m making a cup of tea. I’ve just exercised. I…” He pauses, grasping for the right word to describe his current ghoulishness. He sighs. “I look like s***.” I can’t verify the alleged horror-show that is his appearance, but I’m not sure I believe him. Not John Slattery? Not Mad Men’s impeccably tailored bon vivant Roger Sterling? But he’s the king of pocket squares! With hair as white and well-coiffed as a Dulux pup!
Slattery is ruining his public image while at home with his pet dog circling his feet, his voice, at least, just as we remember it – that smooth, honeyed cadence that makes him Hollywood’s go-to for raconteurs, statesmen and authority figures. Tony Stark’s industrialist dad in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Jon Hamm finally got the leading man role he deserved after Mad Men. It’s a shame it took seven years. Regardless, Confess, Fletch is an absolute treat. Directed by Greg Mottola and working from Gregory McDonald’s novel of the same name, Hamm plays Irwin M. Fletcher, who “used to be an investigative reporter of some repute.” Within the first few minutes, Fletch finds a dead body in the Boston townhouse he’s crashing at and is immediately considered the prime suspect by Sergeant Inspector “Slow-Mo” Monroe (Roy Wood Jr.). We learn the townhouse’s owner Owen Tasserly (John Behlmann) is somewhere in Europe and has an interest in fine art. Meanwhile, Fletch has been tasked with locating nine stolen paintings that belong to a kidnapped rich guy. He’s also dating the rich guy’s daughter (Lorenza Izzo) while being seduced by the rich guy’s wife (Marcia Gay Harden...

Yes, it’s a bit late for a flick based on a “beach book’ (usually a paperback you’d read while getting your tan near the water’s edge), so how about something more suited to Autumn, perhaps a movie based on a mystery one would read while enjoying a warm beverage next to a fireplace? Oh, I forgot to mention that this particular film is part of a literary series featuring a much-beloved sleuth. Now, we just had a visit from Hercule Poirot a few months ago, so his mustache is “in mothballs” for the moment. Anyway, this character is not known as a detective or a “consultant” (like the fellow at 221B Baker Str.). The title “hero” of this tale is an investigative reporter, or at least he was (he’s telling everyone that he’s “retired”). And he’s been absent from the screen for 33 years now.

One of the greatest mysteries that ever faced investigative reporter Irwin Maurice Fletcher (“Fletch” to his friends) is why there haven’t been more movies featuring the character. Gregory Mcdonald’s popular Fletch novels, of which there are 11, were practically all dialogue. The author’s breezy style of repartee — which owed more to Hollywood’s screwball comedy tradition than film noir — should have lent itself well to screenplays, but only two ever got made: Back in the ’80s, we got a couple that positioned Chevy Chase as a goofy sleuth with a penchant for disguise, and others have been trying to revive him ever since.
Reborn at last with Jon Hamm in the role and Greg Mottola (“Superbad”) behind the camera, “Confess, Fletch” makes no attempt to channel what Chase did before, instead going back to Mcdonald’s philosophy that mysteries were but an excuse for a sardonic reporter to wind up other people,...

Captain Ryan Clark, played by Hugh Laurie, is ready to just “sit here and wait for death” as an ill-fated spaceship heads straight into the Sun.
So starts the trailer for Season 2 of HBO’s “Avenue 5,” where food is running low and passengers on a luxury space craft will have to wait eight years before returning to Earth. Josh Gad reprises his role of billionaire Herman Judd, who owns the spaceship captained by Ryan (Laurie) as customer relations executive Matt (Zach Woods) tries to thwart the growing panic onboard. The second season premieres October 10 on HBO.
Created by two-time Emmy winner and “Veep” alum Armando Iannucci, “Avenue 5” is set 40 years into the future where traveling the solar system is a booming tourism business. The eight-episode second season charts how an eight-week space cruise has turned into a nightmare never-ending vacation for those onboard.
