As the days grow shorter and colder, the big prestige dramas will soon dominate the slow trickle of releases as theatres begin to open their doors once more. And though this new film will premiere via streaming services, it harkens back one of the critical and box office hits of last year. Despite its roots in comic book pulp, Joker was (for much of its runtime) a somber and sobering look at mental illness. Now we’re treated to a gender flip, minus the former film’s considerable body count, set “across the pond” in what appears to be the recent past (guessing the early to mid-90s). Oh, and the story’s main focus is played by the celebrated star of a recent Best Picture Oscar winner. But with its portrait of internal psychological struggle, just how does it concern Eternal Beauty?

“What if there’s no such thing as happiness, only moments of not being depressed?” So asks Jane, the paranoid schizophrenic heroine of “Eternal Beauty,” and it’s one of the more thought-provoking lines in Craig Roberts’ earnest but ungainly sophomore feature — a film that itself stumbles upon moments of clarity without ever finding a happy or consistent groove. Making a comedy about mental illness is a tall enough order without the tricky tonal embellishments, filched from influences as disparate as Paul Thomas Anderson and Terry Gilliam, that Roberts has attempted on an otherwise slender script. With an assist from Sally Hawkins’ valiantly committed lead performance, the result occasionally summons the genuinely disoriented perspective of an unstable protagonist, but more often, it’s the filmmaking that seems to spiral out of control.

You cannot just watch part of Craig Roberts’ latest film Eternal Beauty. You might think you could since it’s seemingly as schizophrenic as its lead character Jane (Sally Hawkins), but that chaos is premeditated so that it can find tonal and thematic sense by the end. I was about twenty minutes in when “hate” started to solidify as a reaction to what I saw because it felt like Roberts was poking fun at the disease—purely using Hawkins’ monotone delivery and erratic actions for laughs. If I had stopped then, however, I wouldn’t have been exposed to the glimpses into her past or the trauma she’s suffered or the dramatic weight that comes with realizing nothing on-screen is trustworthy. I wouldn’t have discovered exactly how empathetic Roberts’ depiction truly proves.
It’s not about laughs (at least not solely). This is a very personal project for...

Wash Westmoreland on the dynamic between Keira Knightley and Dominic West: "I had seen in [Joe Wright's] Pride & Prejudice how strongly she takes apart Mr. Darcy [Matthew Macfadyen]. I wanted to even take it further to get into the psycho-sexual hold that Willy had over Colette." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
Wash Westmoreland's incisive Colette, co-written with Richard Glatzer and Rebecca Lenkiewicz (co-writer of Sebastián Lelio's Disobedience and Pawel Pawlikowski's Oscar-winner Ida) knows that its heroine, portrayed by Keira Knightley, will always be larger than what is on screen. Her husband Willy (Dominic West) forced her to write, she obeyed, masterful literature was born. The narrative is more entangled than that. Colette's parents in the countryside, Robert Pugh as her father Jules and Fiona Shaw as her mother Sido, are personalities in their own right, not just caricatures that help the plot along.

The actress talked about how current the film seemed to her, being a story of a woman stepping out of a man’s shadow. The gender politics and sexual politics that are such a part of today’s world. The cast talked about their on set chemistry and how their characters didn’t play by society’s rules, and how that has echoes in the Lgbtq community and with the #MeToo and #TImesUp movements.

Keira Knightley stars as French novelist Colette in director Wash Westmoreland’s gorgeous and gripping period biopic Colette. What a marvelous film!
In late 19th- early20th century Paris, Colette broke barriers of all sorts for women. Although the story is set in Paris more than a century ago, this tale of a woman’s awakening to her own worth, her struggle to be free and be herself, and to be recognized for her own work is as thrilling as ever, and surprisingly timely.
Although the film is about a French writer, Westmoreland’s film is mostly in English. The film is a take on Colette as a feminist icon. Those who might quibble that Colette was not a feminist as much as just a woman...

When you think of costume dramas over the past decade or so, it’s probably a safe bet that you also think of Kiera Knightley. The queen of the costume drama/period piece, she often does her best work while in those sorts of outfits. This week, she adds another one to her cinematic closet, as it were, when Colette opens. In some ways, this is a traditional role for her, while in others, it’s much more modern than you might expect. However you slice it, this is a solid flick with a tremendous performance by Knightley. She’s heads and tails the best part of the movie. Moreover, it’s just her movie. The film is a period piece, of course. The substantial plot synopsis provided by Bleeker Street is as follows: “After marrying a successful Parisian writer known commonly as “Willy” (Dominic West), Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (Keira Knightley...

Canaries is a British feature getting a Horror Channel FrightFest screening this weekend. We've been taking a look...
Think of big screen science fiction, and it’s likely to bring to mind glossy images of alien spacecrafts obliterating the White House, monsters running amuck in New York or Tokyo, or a post-apocalyptic Los Angelean wasteland. It’s perhaps unsurprising that these are the moments which linger in our collective consciousness; on screen at least, such cataclysmic events are usually clustered around the world’s big cities, with filmmakers giving little thought to how they might play out elsewhere.
There have been exceptions of course, such as classics like Village Of The Damned (1960) and The Stepford Wives (1975) and, in more recent years, UK filmmakers have also been looking to redress the balance. Marc Price set his 2008 zombie movie Colin on a suburban British estate, for example, while Stephen Fingleton...

We tend to get used to the structure of crime based shows, they follow certain rules. With Murder: The Complete Series this is turned on its head by providing the stories in a documentary style, based on interviews after the case has finished. You’ll probably expect there to be a few twists, which of course there are many.
Featuring not only the series itself, but also Murder: Joint Enterprise we meet characters connected to the murders and they set their case. This can be family of the murdered person, witnesses or the accused person themselves, all ready to give their information over to us. We then have to decide exactly what has happened and who is the real culprit.

Tim Roth will lead BBC One anti-war drama Reg, about a father of a serviceman who died in the Iraq War.
The actor, playing Reg Keys in the true story, is joined by Anna Maxwell Martin as Reg's wife Sally in the 90-minute drama from Jimmy McGovern.
After the death of Reg and Sally's son and frustrated by the lack of answers from prime minister Tony Blair, Reg decides to stand as an independent candidate in Blair's own constituency in the 2005 general election.
"It was an honour to meet Reg Keys, a truly remarkable man, and it has been a privilege to tell this part of his story," said McGovern.
"When Bob Pugh and I finished the script, they asked me who - in an ideal world - would play the parts of Reg and Sally. 'Tim Roth and Anna Maxwell Martin,' I replied, never dreaming we'd get either.

The highly controversial Joint Enterprise Law caused a stir when it was revived in the UK because it enables the police to implicate sometimes unwitting individuals in criminal investigations. It was only a matter of time before Jimmy McGovern — champion of justice and the working class — got to work on a gritty drama based around the unpopular law.
Common began with naive teenager Jonjo driving his older cousin and some mates to get a pizza. Unbeknownst to him they actually planned to rough someone up. Worse still, things didn’t quite go to plan and an innocent bystander ended up being stabbed. Despite threats of recrimination from the killer, Jonjo opted to take the higher moral ground and promptly told the police precisely what had transpired. Sadly for him, the lead detective had an emotional attachment to the victim’s mother and he was determined...

Jimmy McGovern’s new one-off BBC drama, Common, seeks to highlight the controversies of the Joint Enterprise doctrine…
Feature
In 1846, two men named John Swindall and James Osborne engaged in a cart race on a public road that caused the death of a pedestrian. Only one vehicle had killed the victim, but as both had encouraged the other to drive dangerously, Swindall and Osborne were judged to be acting on a common intention and were both charged with manslaughter. The case ushered in the Joint Enterprise doctrine in English law, whereby two or more people who agree to commit a crime together are liable for the criminal actions of other members of their group.
Joint Enterprise. It sounds like a judicious scheme. Why should members of a group who set out with the common goal of murder evade justice only because they didn’t - or it couldn’t be...

BBC One will air Common, a feature-length film by Cracker creator Jimmy McGovern, on Sunday the 6th of July...
Trailer
It may not have a sci-fi, fantasy or cult bone in its body, but it's tremendous original UK drama and as such, we didn't think you'd mind us sneaking Jimmy McGovern's Common onto the site.
Due to air on BBC One on Sunday the 6th of July, the ninety-minute film tells the story of a teenager dragged into a murder investigation that threatens to upturn his entire life. The cast, as McGovern's casts tend to be, has no weak links, from Game Of Thrones' Michelle Fairley and Robert Pugh to Susan Lynch, Daniel Mays, Jodhi May and relative newcomer Nico Mirallegro.
Here's the first trailer for the feature-length drama from the creator of Cracker, The Street and the terrific Accused.

The UK's BBC Two has a new TV movie airing on Monday, 30 December, titled The Thirteenth Tale; and we have a look at two clips from it right here. Hopefully it'll be heading Stateside via BBC America shortly!
The Thirteenth Tale, starring Vanessa Redgrave (Julia, Howard's End, The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh) and Olivia Colman ("Broadchurch"), is a psychological drama adapted by Oscar-winning screenwriter Christopher Hampton (Atonement, Dangerous Liaisons) from Diane Setterfield's bestselling novel.
It's directed by James Kent ("The White Queen") and co-stars Alexandra Roach, Robert Pugh, Steven Mackintosh, and Tom Goodman Hill.
Synopsis:
Biographer Margaret Lea (Colman) is summoned to the Yorkshire home of dying novelist Vida Winter (Redgrave), who has handpicked Margaret to write her biography. Though initially hesitant, as Vida has a reputation for distorting facts in interviews, Margaret becomes fascinated by her previously untold story.
As the novelist recounts her dark and disturbing childhood,...
