Chile’s Fabula and Spain’s Alea Media have unveiled they are allying on development of “A Long Petal of the Sea,” based on a 2019 novel by Isabel Allende.
Alea Media founder Aitor Gabilondo will serve as showrunner on the series which is scheduled to go into production by the end of 2025.
The new title joins two of the biggest powerhouses of premium scripted drama in the Spanish-speaking world and powerful IP in a swing for broad audiences worldwide.

As Lucía Puenzo’s Electrophilia recently established, being struck by lightning can have a lot of strange effects on people. Catapulting them through time into the future is not normally on the list – but then again, with thousand of people going missing around the world every year, never to be seen again, what can we really say for sure?
Shinzaemon Kosaka (Yamaguchi Makiya) is in the middle of a late night duel with a member of a rival clan when the bolt hits him. When he wakes up, it’s broad daylight, and he’s in an unfamiliar street. There’s something odd about it that he just can’t place. Wandering around, he finds a group of people behaving in very odd ways. Though he tries to help them, he finds, to his distress, that he has caused offence. Unbeknownst to him, he has travelled 140 years through time, regaining consciousness on a film.

The Canadian genre festival’s top prize was bestowed on directors Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre De La Patelliere at Fantasia’s jury awards ceremony on Saturday (July 27), in the middle of the festival’s July 18-Aug 4 run.

Films set to debut at the festival include Chris Stuckmann’s Shelby Oaks, which will world premiere at the festival with a screening presented by Mike Flanagan.

The San Sebastian Film Festival is shining the light on female filmmakers from across Latin America with the lineup for its Horizontes Latinos sidebar section. Eight of the 12 features in this year’s program, which San Sebastian unveiled on Thursday, are from female directors, including A Ravaging Wind from Argentine filmmaker Paula Hernández, which will open the section. All 12 films come from directors of Latino origin and were entirely or partially produced in Latin America but have not yet been released in Spain.
A Ravaging Wind is Hernández’s adaptation of Selva Almada’s novel of the same name and follows the story of a preacher and his daughter whose car breaks down during their latest mission to spread the gospel. Italian producer Andrea Iervolino is planning to bring to the big screen “Maserati: a Racing Life,” an English-language biopic about the family behind the high-performance automobiles that, along with Ferrari and Lamborghini, Italy is known for.
Iervolino’s Ilbe Group – in which he is partnered with Monika Bacardi – previously produced the Bobby Moresco-directed biopic “Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend” and is also among producers of Micheal Mann’s upcoming “Ferrari” with Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz and Shailene Woodley. He told Variety he sees “Maserati” as a natural segue to those films about Italy’s iconic automakers.
“I want to celebrate the entrepreneurial genius of Italians, their history and humanity,” he said.
“Italy isn’t just pizza, mandolins, pasta and the mob,” Iervolino added. “It’s a country of many geniuses who left a huge legacy. When it comes to the auto making sector these families were pioneers, way ahead of the curve.

Diane Warren’s songwriting job for Tell It Like a Woman was simple: create a hymn for female empowerment.
“We tend to beat ourselves up a lot,” the veteran tune scribe said during a panel at Deadline’s Sound & Screen event. “Every now and then you have to just give yourself some f*cking applause, give yourself some love, give yourself some respect. Give it to yourself before you give it to someone else.”
Tell It Like a Woman is comprised of seven segments directed by female directors from different parts of the world. Genres include drama, comedy, docudrama and animation. “They are pretty powerful stories,” said Warren. “I wanted to write a song that could fit in all these various movies, which is basically just about empowerment. These are stories about strong women. I wanted the song to reflect that.”

At the 20th Morelia Film Festival to debut their first feature produced in Mexico, “Maquíllame Otra Vez,” brothers Pablo and Juan de Diós Larrain of Chile-based film-tv powerhouse Fabula have announced the official launch of their Mexican city production office with Carlos Taibo at the helm. Fabula has also named Eduardo Castro as their line producer, Enrique Ochoa as deputy finance manager and Daniela Amorós as human resources director.
“In all, we’ll have up to 18 staff members aside from additional hires on a per project basis,” said producer Juan de Dios who pointed out that Fabula was interested in “generating content that portrays Latin America’s idiosyncrasies and imagination as well as revealing our identity from our own points of view and challenges.”

Exclusive: Lionsgate+ has renewed Señorita 89 for a second season and has added Dolores Heredia (El Galán) and Yoshira Escárrega (Toda La Sangre) as series regulars. Production will kick off on October 17 in Mexico City.

BBC Factual has commissioned “Zuckerberg” (working title), a three-part BBC Two and BBC iPlayer series aiming to present the definitive account of Mark Zuckerberg and his brainchild, marking the 20th anniversary of Facebook’s founding. On Feb. 4, 2004, a teenage Zuckerberg launched a website to help college students connect with each other, which went on to become Facebook. The social media giant, the parent company of which is now called Meta, is in the process of transforming its vision.
The series, which will have access to key players, insider testimony, personal journals and rare archive material, is made by Mindhouse Productions and was commissioned by Jack Bootle, head of commissioning, science and natural history at the BBC. The executive producer is Mindhouse’s Nancy Strang.

The new feminist thriller "Señorita 89" is out this month on the Spanish-language streaming service Pantaya. The hour-long drama tells the story of 32 Mexican beauty queens vying for the country's 1989 crown amid exploitative pageant organizers, lecherous sponsors, and their own secrets. For her part, star Ilse Salas wants the show to inspire conversations around beauty, stereotypes, and violence. She plays Concepción, the woman running the pageant and the show's erstwhile villain. In the first two episodes, Concepción shows her evil streak, nudging the young women in her care toward sex work, worrying about appearing racist, and generally using her power to only advance her own agenda.

Carlos Gardel, the most famous figure in tango history, is set to become the subject of a bio-series made by Kapow, the Argentine producer of HBO Max/Amazon hit “La Jauría,” and Luis Ortega, director of episodes of Netflix’s “El Marginal” as well as smash hit true crime feature “El Angel.”
Currently being written by Ortega, with partner Rodolfo Palacios at their prodco El Despacho, which will co-produce the series, the series should be ready for presentation by around the end of May, Ortega told Variety.

The German-Turkish creative is perhaps best known for his thriller In the Fade, which claimed the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 2017 and brought star Diane Kruger the Cannes Film Festival’s award for Best Actress.
