- Briefly joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War but was honourably discharged when his father died.
- Has played Kirstie Alley's father twice, first in a guest appearance on Cheers (1982), and later on the series Veronica's Closet (1997).
- Received a degree in Economics from Temple University. Later worked as a bookkeeper with the Federal Reserve Bank while taking acting classes at the American Theatre Wing in New York.
- Got into acting via a a scholarship to New York's American Theatre Wing through a TV talent contest.
