The death penalty takes centerstage on Wednesday when Death Row inmate Richard Glossip’s case comes before the Supreme Court once again — this time with his supporters calling for a new trial.
“Both Richard and I are extremely grateful that the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in his case today. We continue to lean on our faith and remain prayerful,” Glossip’s wife, Lea, tells Rolling Stone.
Glossip has been a cause célèbre for the past few decades, practically ever since he was sentenced to death for the 1997 murder-for-hire of his boss,...

Over thirty years have passed since Sister Helen Prejean’s story first moved millions in Dead Man Walking. In that time, much has changed, but the Louisiana nun’s mission remains the same. Now in her eighties, Sister Helen continues walking alongside men on death row, offering them compassion in their final hours. With Rebel Nun, director Dominic Sivyer sets out to show just how far her activism has come.
Through a vast collection of archival footage spanning six decades, Sivyer takes viewers right back to the beginning. We see Sister Helen’s humble Louisiana upbringing and early days as a nun, when life offered few options to women. Her volunteer work with at-risk communities led to an unexpected role: pen pal to inmates on death row. Her first visit to Angola State Prison, where she’d watch men die in the electric chair, changed Sister Helen forever. But it...

Anti-death penalty advocate Sister Helen Prejean is getting some help of Kim Kardashian in the documentary Rebel Nun.
In a clip from the documentary, directed by Dominic Sivyer, Sister Prejean is seen getting a text from Kardashian and then calling the star to enlist her help in the case of Richard Glossip, a man who was convicted of murder in 1997 and has been on death row for over two decades for a case that many have said was mishandled.
“I’m so honored to work alongside you. I follow you on social media and you have shown me so many cases that have been brought to my attention. Just look at what you post,” Kardashian tells the nun over Facetime. The two then strategize how to best bring attention to Glossip’s situation. Oklahoma inmate Richard Glossip once more eluded death Friday when his May 18th execution was put on hold by the U.S. Supreme Court. The decision came after his attorneys argued in their filings to the court that there were problems with Glossip’s 1997 trial. They also claimed that Oklahoma will “suffer harm from its Department of Corrections executing a person whom the State has concluded should never have been convicted of murder, let alone sentenced to die, in the first place.” Glossip’s case recently got a boost following...

Although Marilyn Monroe never got the chance to achieve Screen Actors Guild Awards recognition, her legacy has been honored by the organization in the form of multiple Best Actress notices for women who have embodied her on the big screen. 11 years after Michelle Williams was nominated for playing Monroe in “My Week with Marilyn,” Ana de Armas has earned a spot in the current lead female lineup for her take on the classic movie star in “Blonde.” Since SAG voters have feted several portrayals of iconic actors before, she stands a good chance of going all the way.
De Armas, Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”), and Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) make up a first-time nominee majority in this year’s Best Film Actress SAG Award lineup, although Yeoh is a past ensemble contender for “Crazy Rich Asians” (2019). If you watched David Tennant’s captivating portrayal of Alexander Litvinenko as he lay dying and thought ‘You know what this needs? More arias’, then guess what? You’re in luck.
The bold, furious, highly effective Itvx drama Litvinenko might have left you wondering where you can find out more about what happened, or where else you can see this tragic, stranger-than-fiction true story brought to life. Believe it or not, the answers to both of these questions includes a modern opera.

Eddie Redmayne won his first Oscar for playing the paralyzed genius Stephen Hawking in the warmly received biopic “The Theory of Everything.” In telling the story of how the Oxford-educated Hawking overcame his physical limitations brought on by Als — or Lou Gehrig’s disease — to have a brilliant career as a physicist and author (“A Brief History of Time” was a best seller), and achieve personal satisfaction with two wives and two children, Redmayne won the hearts of academy voters and claimed the Best Actor prize in 2015.
Seven years later, Redmayne is trying for a second gold statuette in another real-life role but this one is sinister and twisted. 25 years ago, Tim Robbins' Dead Man Walking opened in theatres. The film dramatizes the true story of Sister Helen Prejean, the close relationship she forged, as a spiritual adviser, with convicted murderers on death row. Here, they are made into the composite fictional figure of Matthew Poncelet. Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn take on the lead roles, delivering two of the best performances of their respective careers. He received his first Oscar nomination out of it. She was honored with her fifth nod and, presently, her last. And she finally won the Best Actress trophy.
The actress may be a controversial figure, but I'm not here to litigate her politics or the way she chooses to express them. Instead, I'd like to look at her achievements as a performer, specifically the five works that paved the way to that triumph on the night of the 67th Academy Awards.

“Everyone is worth more than their worst act,” said Roman Catholic sister and anti-death penalty advocate Helen Prejean, and it’s with these words that “45 Seconds of Laughter” closes. It’s an apt sentiment on which to leave Tim Robbins’ sincerely felt documentary study of the therapeutic acting workshops run by his own theater company in a California prison — not least because the film is itself at pains to identify its human subjects only by their present, not their past. But if it’s also an obvious callback to Robbins’ penitentiary-set 1995 drama “Dead Man Walking,” which won Susan Sarandon an Oscar for playing Prejean, the self-reference doesn’t exactly flatter the new film: Occasionally heart-stirring but also rather slight, Robbins’ mellow first foray into docmaking is far removed from his pre-millennial era of artistic and political urgency.
“45 Seconds of Laughter” is, in fact, Robbins’ first big-screen directorial outing since 1999’s “Cradle Will Rock,...

Sean Penn: Honorary César goes Hollywood – again (photo: Sean Penn in '21 Grams') Sean Penn, 54, will receive the 2015 Honorary César (César d'Honneur), the French Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Crafts has announced. That means the French Academy's powers-that-be are once again trying to make the Prix César ceremony relevant to the American media. Their tactic is to hand out the career award to a widely known and relatively young – i.e., media friendly – Hollywood celebrity. (Scroll down for more such examples.) In the words of the French Academy, Honorary César 2015 recipient Sean Penn is a "living legend" and "a stand-alone icon in American cinema." It has also hailed the two-time Best Actor Oscar winner as a "mythical actor, a politically active personality and an exceptional director." Penn will be honored at the César Awards ceremony on Feb. 20, 2015. Sean Penn movies Sean Penn movies range from the teen comedy...

Alex Gibney is astoundingly prolific. The Oscar-winning documentarian isn't just turning out films at a regular clip of two to three a year, he's also found time for television projects -- like the new CNN series "Death Row Stories," which he executive produced with Robert Redford. The eight-part docuseries, one of two Redford is debuting on the news channel this week, premieres this Sunday, March 9th at 9pm and explores questions about the death penalty and the justice system, with each episode unraveling a different capital murder case. Composers have always mined familiar stories for their texts, although Charles Wuorinen, whose Brokeback Mountain premieres tonight in Madrid, has gone back to the source rather than the screen version of this timeless story
Charles Wuorinen's opera on Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain is anything but an adaptation of the movie. For a start, the opera features Proulx's own libretto, whereas the author did not write the screenplay for the Oscar-winning movie. As Proulx told me for this week's Music Matters, creating her own opera libretto from her 1997 story was about compressing the already heightened, concise world of the short story still further into the distilled essentials that the characters will sing on stage at the world premiere at the Teatro Real in Madrid tonight. CNN Orders Alex Gibney and Robert Redford Docuseries 'Death Row Stories,' Narrated by Susan Sarandon

CNN has ordered "Death Row Stories," a new eight-part original series from Alex Gibney and Robert Redford. Each episode of the series will unravel a different capital murder case, calling into question different beliefs about the death penalty and the justice system. Susan Sarandon, who won an Oscar for her role as death row minister Sister Helen Prejean in "Dead Man Walking," will serve as narrator. The stakes -- life or death -- couldn’t be higher," said the continually prolific Gibney, who heads to Sundance with new film "Finding Fela" this month. Gibney will executive produce the series alongside Redford and Sundance Productions partner Laura Michalchyshyn, Dave Snyder, Stacey Offman, and Brad Herbert. Every once in awhile the world pretends it's been a "wonderful year for women in film," and 2012 fits the bill. For instance, we have a 9-year-old Oscar-nominated actress in Quvenzhane Wallis, an 81-year-old Oscar-nominated actress in Emmanuelle Riva, and a film phenomenon that hinges on a tough female protagonist (The Hunger Games). In honor of the womanly greatness of 2012, I'd thought I'd take us back to my favorite Oscar year of the 1990s: 1991. You had Jodie Foster in the unforgettable role of Clarice Starling, Diane Ladd and Laura Dern up for Oscars in Rambling Rose, and a movie that gave us two Oscar-nominated, feminist-as-hell perfromances, Thelma and Louise, which earned screenwriter Callie Khouri an Academy Award.
If you watch movies to escape, then Thelma and Louise may be the most medicinal movie of all time. Sure, it's a pretty standard road movie by anyone's definition, but it's also the rare...

To paraphrase the great Dina Washington, what a difference a day makes in Jeff, Who Lives at Home, the second studio film from mumblecore merchants-turned burgeoning Hollywood players, the Duplass brothers.
Opening with a very funny scene, eponymous hero (played with an innocent naivety by Jason Segel) is sat in contemplative solitude using an old Dictaphone to ponder the themes of fate and destiny found in the film Signs. An aimless pothead who appears to be mainly relegated to the basement sofa (bong firmly affixed to hand), Jeff receives a phone call from someone demanding to speak to a ‘Kevin’ which leads him to believe this seemingly arbitrary moment is what he’s been waiting for.
Sent on a simple Diy errand by his exasperated, office worker mother (Susan Sarandon), a series of interconnecting events leads Jeff to older brother Pat (Ed Helms). With his already fragile marriage, further exacerbated...

Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon is feeling the heat from Catholic and Jewish groups after reportedly calling Pope Benedict XVI a Nazi during an interview with actor Bob Balaban at the Hamptons Film Festival in New York on Saturday.
Newsday first reported the incident, and described the chain of events that led to the "offhand" comment:
She was discussing her 1995 film "Dead Man Walking," based on the anti-death-penalty book by Sister Helen Prejean, a copy of which she sent to the pope.
"The last one," she said, "not this Nazi one we have now." Balaban gently tut-tutted, but Sarandon only repeated her remark.
The Vatican has been open about Pope Benedict XVI's temporary membership in the Hitler Youth during the 1940s. As the report by Reuters explains, many children were forced to be part of the group during that time.

At Hamptons film festival, actor praises previous pontiff for stance on death penalty, but criticises 'Nazi one we have now'

Speaking at the Hamptons film festival this weekend, the actor Susan Sarandon applauded the previous pontiff – to whom she had sent a copy of Sister Helen Prejean's Dead Man Walking, the film adaptation of which Sarandon starred in – for his stance on the death penalty. Catholic Activist Blasts Sarandon For 'Ignorant' Nazi Comments

A leading Catholic activist has hit back at outspoken actress Susan Sarandon for branding German pontiff Pope Benedict XVI a "Nazi", insisting her remarks are "positively obscene".
The Oscar winner made the comments on Saturday during a Hamptons Film Festival interview with actor/director Bob Balaban, during which she recalled sending a copy of the book Dead Man Walking - about Sister Helen Prejean's special relationship with death row prisoner Matthew Poncelet - to Pope John Paul II.
Clarifying her story, she said, "The last one (pope), not this Nazi one we have now."
She went on to repeat the remarks to the audience at the Bay Street Theatre, which have served to trigger a response from members of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights.
President Bill Donohue tells TMZ.com, "Susan Sarandon's quip about Pope Benedict XVI being a Nazi bespeaks unparalleled ignorance."
The religious campaigner has also addressed the Pope's previous links to the Hitler Youth Nazi group, claiming the pontiff quit the movement as soon as he was old enough.
He adds, "Joseph Ratzinger (the pope) was conscripted into the Nazi Youth the way every other 14-year-old German boy was at the time. Unlike most others, he not only refused to go to the compulsory meetings - he actually deserted the Hitler Youth! Which is precisely why Jews today regard him as a friend, not as an enemy.
"In short, what Sarandon said is positively obscene."...

Sarandon Brands Pope Benedict XVI A 'Nazi'

Outspoken Hollywood veteran Susan Sarandon is courting controversy with Catholic leaders after calling German pontiff Pope Benedict XVI a "Nazi".
The Oscar winner made the remarks on Saturday during a Hamptons Film Festival interview with actor/director Bob Balaban, during which she recalled sending a copy of the book Dead Man Walking - about Sister Helen Prejean's special relationship with death row prisoner Matthew Poncelet - to Pope John Paul II.

According to Newsday.com, Balaban attempted to skirt around the star's comments, only for Sarandon to repeat it again, prompting audience members at the Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor to laugh.
Sarandon portrayed Prejean in 1995's big screen adaptation of Dead Man Walking, for which she won the Best Actress Academy Award.
Early on in his papacy, representatives for Pope Benedict XVI were forced to deny allegations the religious leader had been a member of the Hitler Youth Nazi group as a teen.

Alexa here. I have an abiding love for Susan Sarandon, who turns 65 today. It's great to see her going strong, supporting Wall Street protesters and getting Sister Helen Prejean to preside over her daughter's wedding. While I'm still waiting to find some killer indie poster designs of my favorite Susan films (The Hunger, White Palace), here are some fun curios from around the internet celebrating the beauty with the planet-sized eyes.
