There will be no leap to season three for NBC’s Quantum Leap.
The network has canceled the reboot of the 1989 series after a two-season run, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
The series starring Raymond Lee wrapped its sophomore season in February and ranked as one of the broadcast network’s lowest-rated scripted originals.
Quantum Leap, which was produced in-house at Universal Television, earned a speedy season two renewal as NBC kept production going in a bid to have scripted originals during the writers and actors strikes.
The follow-up to the original series hailed from Martin Gero and Dean Georgaris, who exec-produced alongside Deborah Pratt, Chris Grismer and Alex Berger. Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt developed the series and served as showrunners on the update.

“Quantum Leap” has been canceled at NBC after two seasons, Variety has confirmed.
The show served as a followup to the 1989 show of the same name starring Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell. The revamped version starred Raymond Lee as physicist Dr. Ben Song, whose attempt to restart the Quantum Leap project pioneered by Dr. Sam Beckett leads to him being trapped in different people’s lives in the past just like Beckett. As he seeks to put right what once went wrong in those lives, he “leaps” to different lives while hoping that each leap will be the leap home.
The cast of the series also included Caitlin Bassett, Ernie Hudson, Mason Alexander Park, and Nanrisa Lee. Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt developed the series and served as executive producers alongside Martin Gero via Quinn’s House, Dean Georgaris, Deborah Pratt, Chris Grismer, and Alex Berger. Universal Television was the studio.

Exclusive: NBC has decided not to proceed with a third season of its Quantum Leap reboot starring Raymond Lee. The news comes more than a month after the two-hour Season 2 finale aired Feb. 20.
The development is not entirely surprising as the series, from Universal Television, had been on the bubble. That is in contrast to last season when Quantum Leap received a very early renewal in December 2022.
A follow-up to the original series, which aired on NBC from 1989-93, Quantum Leap is set in present day. It’s been 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. Now a new team has been assembled to restart the project in the hopes of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it.
In addition to Lee, the series stars Ernie Hudson, Caitlin Bassett, Mason Alexander Park and Nanrisa Lee.

“(Sam) awoke to find himself trapped in the past, facing mirror images that were not his own and driven by an unknown force to change history for the better.”
With music!
Of all the ways Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula) would leap into others lives to put right what once went wrong on Quantum Leap, the most stories were always ones that involved music. Scott Bakula can do pretty much anything but that man can Sing. The people behind Quantum Leap took great advantage of this and across five seasons they gave him (and other actors) the chance to belt out many incredible songs – some originally written for the show itself and some flawless covers.
Now we’re going through the best of the best of these performances. We’ll be looking at the original series, the 2022 continuation, and an extra gem along the way. To help narrow this list down,...

The new series of Quantum Leap has brought in many elements from the original show. The returns of Beth (Susan Diol) and one-time leapee Magic (Ernie Hudson), name-checking the Evil Leapers, addressing the question of whether Sam (Scott Bakula) ever made it home, and many more. But two seasons in a major part of Quantum Leap lore has failed to be even hinted at.
Sam’s daughter. Sammy Jo.
Introduced as part of the “Trilogy” series of episodes in 1992 in the original Quantum Leap’s fifth and final season, Sammy Jo’s origin is complicated. The three episodes follow Sam as he leaps into different people attempting to help a woman named Abigail Fuller, who in each leap is accused of murder. Sam first meets her as a young girl in “Trilogy Part 1” when he leaps into her father, saving her from being killed.

Despite its status as one of the least “sci-fi” of sci-fi shows, in part due to its focus on “down to Earth” stories, the original Quantum Leap still has a set of “rules” that fans judge its stories by. A Leaper can’t leap outside their own lifetime. “God, time, fate, or whatever” is leaping people through time. Aliens exist. Sam (Scott Bakula) never got home after the end of the original series and it was a travesty.
These rules have become sacrosanct to fans of the series, especially without new material for over 30 years. Fans have constantly poured over the original episodes of Quantum Leap, laying out the hard rules of what can and can’t be done in the world. It’s no surprise that when the new Quantum Leap debuted, especially since it’s an in-continuity sequel to the original series, fans were ready to call out...

Three episodes into Quantum Leap Season 2, and we’re still very much enjoying Ben’s (Raymond Lee) journey on these jumps through time. And one such leap is going to take Ben to 1961 for an episode that was filmed in Egypt. “That was beyond exciting,” Pratt tells TV Insider about shooting on location. “To actually physically get on a plane and go to something as historic and wonderful culturally was, I think, a real opportunity for the show. I hope we get to do it more. It’s a fun episode with some really great twists to it, and it’s a good action ride as well.” Quantum Leap has shown, just over its first season and a few episodes into its second, that it can do smaller, intimate stories and larger, action-packed ones equally as well. “We’ll continue to have fun ...

Quantum Leap Episode 13
Quantum Leap episode 13 “Family Style” is groundbreaking for the revival and the original in two ways. First, Deborah Pratt, head writer of the original and current executive producer, finally gets a chance to direct an episode!
As the new Quantum Leap story arc develops, Pratt provides continuity between old and new in her day-to-day involvement with the sequel series. In December 2022, NBC greenlit a second season for Quantum Leap, and Pratt is already hands-on with filming the second season’s premiere and meeting about subsequent episodes. While Pratt is undoubtedly the expert in preventing contradictions between the new show and the old, she also supports going beyond canon through the exploration and creation of new ideas:
“I want Martin [Gero], Dean [Georgaris] and the writers to have the freedom to explore all the history of Quantum Leap,” Pratt told Upi. “I want them to create new canon.

“Quantum Leap” just fast-forwarded to Season 2. NBC has renewed its new “Quantum Leap,” the revival of the ’90s science-fiction series, for a second season.
This “Quantum Leap,” which stars Raymond Lee as Dr. Ben Song, has been a strong performer for both NBC and for Peacock, where episodes stream next-day. “Quantum Leap” (2022) sees Song following up on the work of Scott Bakula’s lead character Dr. Sam Beckett — and his time-travel adventures — 30 years later.
“Quantum Leap” airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on NBC, following “The Voice.” Currently on a winter break, “Leap” returns January 2. (“The Voice” is airing its two-part season finale tonight and tomorrow night.) To-date, “Quantum Leap” pilot episode has amassed more than 10 million viewers across the broadcast network and NBCUniversal’s streaming service. That’s pretty good these days, but execs will love to leap back to the Nielsen ratings sheets of 1989.

Quantum Leap: Sequel series to the time-hopping adventure adds six extra episodes to premiere season
TV reboots have been happening for decades. Some to great success and some to dismal failure. High concept sci-fi shows lend themselves to easily adaptable updates that can expand the universe of the story as well as advance the technological display within the story and also in the making of the show. A recent TV series reimagining is that of a sequel to 1989’s Quantum Leap, which originally starred Scott Bakula as a time traveler who tries to get home randomly transported into the bodies of people in different eras as he tries to make his way back home.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the 2022 reboot show has now had six extra episodes added to its freshman schedule, which now brings season one to a total of 18 episodes. The new series from showrunner, Martin Gero, premiered in September with just over 3 million viewers and averaged about 3 million viewers in the first three episodes.

A large part of my childhood was spent in front of our living room television, absorbing whatever show my mom was engrossed in at the time. Luckily for me, she had pretty awesome taste, so I grew up on shows like "The X-Files," "Twin Peaks," and "Quantum Leap." The first two series are widely known and appreciated for their long lasting impact on episodic television and the sci-fi genre as a whole, but "Quantum Leap" has largely slipped out of the popular consciousness -- until now.
NBC has decided to gift us all with a "Quantum Leap" reboot, which premiered earlier this week on NBC. Loyal fans of the original series are undoubtedly interested to see what a fresh creative team and a new leading man can bring to the show, but reboots of older fan favorites are always tricky business. Over 3 million people tuned in for the network premiere of NBC's "Quantum Leap" revival, which is a sequel to the original series starring Scott Bakula (though he's not involved in it outside archive photos). People were/are clearly curious to see what this new series is all about, and according to showrunner Martin Gero, it's about "hope, heart, humor, and history," just as its predecessor was.
The new "Quantum Leap" stars Raymond Lee as physicist Ben Song, leader of the revived Quantum Leap project, who steps into the accelerator in 2022 and wakes with amnesia in the body of a bank robber circa 1985. "Getaway driver" is just the first stop on Lee's whirlwind time-traveling tour, as his consciousness continues to jump through time into different bodies so he can help people in their lives and make history better. Along the way, he has the chance to interact with a hologram...

Scott Bakula is setting the record straight on why he is not involved in NBC’s Quantum Leap reboot and shuts down any speculation that he might reprise his role on the sequel, which premieres this coming Monday, September 19.
“I have no connection with the new show, either in front of the camera or behind it,” Bakula wrote in a social media post next to a boxing scene photo from the original series that gives out a “ready for a fight” vibe. He said that he was presented with the pilot script and passed on getting involved.

NBC introduces its new take on a classic series next week with the premiere of “Quantum Leap.”
The upcoming series isn’t so much a reboot as it is a continuation of the story that the previous iteration told, showrunner Martin Gero said during Thursday’s Television Critics Association panel. In fact, Gero admitted that the creative team knew they’d be setting the show up for failure if they tried to recast the iconic time traveler Dr. Sam Beckett and his hologram sidekick, Al.
“It really made sense for this to be a continuation of the story with a brand new set of characters — one that could honor the old show, but have a really low bar for entry for new viewers,” he said.
The new “Quantum Leap” is set in the present, nearly 30 years after the original 1985 installment. Per the network, “a new team has been assembled to...

Everything old is new again!
It's been 30 years since Scott Bakula's Samuel Beckett bounced through time to pivotal moments in history to right what had gone wrong wherever he landed.
Now, a new team will get in on that action.
The sequel comes from Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, with Steven Lilien, Bryan Wynbrandt, Don Bellisario, Deborah Pratt, and Martin Gero producing.
That's a nice pedigree working behind the scenes to bring the show into the light again.
Bellisario created Quantum Leap and a load of other successful shows, including Airwolf, Magnum, P.I., Jag, and NCIS.
Magnum P.I. has already been rebooted successfully, so we know Bellisario isn't stuck in the past, unable to breathe new life into his previous work.
Lilien and Wyndbrandt created God Friended me and have written for or produced series such as Hawaii Five-0, Gotham, and La Brea.

NBC, traditionally the first broadcast network to present its fall lineup at the upfronts, once again became the first net to give a series order to a pilot. It went to Quantum Leap, a reboot of the popular 1990s sci-fi drama, which stars Raymond Lee. (First-look photo above)
As Deadline reported in the Early Pilot Buzz story earlier this week, Quantum Leap appeared a lock for a series pickup with Lee poised to potentially become one of the breakout stars of next season. It is NBC’s only 2022 drama pilot that was in consideration for the fall schedule; two others Unbroken and Blank Slate, would be evaluated for a launch in November or midseason. Unbroken is headline by Scott Bakula, star of the original Quantum Leap, who is no involved in the reboot.

Caitlin Bassett, Nanrisa Lee, and Mason Alexander Park have all joined the cast of the project. They join previously announced cast members Raymond Lee and Ernie Hudson.
