It’s the first time such a formidable number of debuts have featured in the competition, offering a snapshot of what the fest’s artistic director Mihai Chirilov describes as a “balanced landscape” of new and established voices in Romania’s celebrated film industry.
It’s been nearly two decades since Cristi Puiu’s “The Death of Mr. Lazarescu” (2005) won the Un Certain Regard Award at the Cannes Film Festival, kickstarting what would come to be known as the Romanian New Wave. Two years later, Cristian Mungiu won the Palme d’Or for his abortion drama “4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days,” cementing the movement’s status and effectively punching the tickets of Mungiu, Puiu...

In the vein of 1980s Cold War-era detective TV series, Comrade Detective is a gritty, action-packed and blood-soaked story that finds Romanian Detectives Gregor Anghel (played by Florin Piersic Jr. and dubbed by Channing Tatum, who is also an executive producer) and Iosef Baciu (played by Corneliu Ulici and dubbed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) investigating the murder of a fellow officer, which leads to the unraveling of a subversive plot to destroy their country. During this phone interview with Collider, actors and friends Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt joked about this rather unusual project, what inspired …...

When Decker (Seagal), a highly skilled ex-dea agent, crosses paths with Lisa (Jade Ewen), she approaches him with a seductive proposition: help her steal two million dollars from a drug kingpin’s car, guarded by Parisian Police, and share in the bounty. But, even if they outrun the cops, can they outgun the hit squads sent by the furious, sadistic drug lord to reclaim the loot?
From a story written by a former federal agent, Chuck Hustmyre, End of a Gun is yet another collaboration between Seagal and director Keoni Waxman – who, it seems, has become Seagal’s go-to guy when it comes to capturing the movie hard man at his best. Well, unless you count the last effort from the duo,...

Amazon and A24 may have just genetically engineered a television show that perfectly aligns with my sensibilities. Comrade Detective, which debuts later this summer, is being made to look like a Romanian cop show from the 1980s, with Romanian actors Florin Piersic Jr. and Corneliu Ulici playing the lead roles. But here’s the part that will make people raise their eyebrows: Channing Tatum […]

On any normal day, a project that involved Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt would pique my interest. It turns out that the project that they are currently involved with together sounds amazing!
It was recently announced that Tatum’s pet project television show, Comrade Detective, will be hitting Amazon on August 4th of this year. Never heard of it before? Me either, but now that I have, I can’t wait to see it.
The series is being presented as a half-hour 1980s TV series from Romania and Tatum and Gordon-Levitt will be providing the voice dubbing for the two Romanian actors, Florin Piersic Jr. and Corneliu Ulici, that are playing Detectives Gregor Anghel and Iosef Baciu. You know, because in the 80s Romania wasn't showing English speaking TV shows. Here's the synopsis:
In the thick of 1980's Cold War hysteria, the Romanian government created the country's most popular and longest-running series,...

It has been a long time since I’ve reviewed a direct-to-market Steven Seagal movie, in fact its been some time since I’ve so much as watched one for my own “pleasure”. I skipped over Sniper: Special Ops, Asian Connection, Code of Honour, and the most recent Dtv release End of a Gun, maily because after buying, watching, and often reviewing, every single film starring Seagal until the aforementioned I was suffering from Seagal burnout… A condition that often comes about in an audience when they realise that the once-agile former martial arts superstar has succumbed to appearing in extended cameos in the hopes that long-suffering fans – like myself – will buy the film on his name...
