Leave it to Disney to have the last word in the Super Bowl. Right when the Patriots defeated the Rams in what could probably be the blandest Super Bowl, a new sneak peek at Toy Story 4 came in to add some fun and excitement to the mix.
The short, yet enjoyable Super Bowl spot has Woody (Tom Hanks) and Bo Peep (Annie Potts) searching for Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) in what seems like a new town for them. As they enjoy a local carnival, it turns out he is trapped as a prize at one of the games and he is being taunted by new characters Ducky and Bunny played by Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele respectively.
Here’s the logline for the new installment of Toy Story 4: Woody has always been confident about his place in the world, and that his priority is taking care of his kid,...

Bo Peep is back, along with the rest of the gang in the first official trailer for “Toy Story 4.”
Sporting a new look, complete with a purple cape, a light blue pantsuit, and a much more commanding demeanor, everyone’s favorite porcelain sheepherder is joined by a host of returning characters including Woody, Buzz, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, Hamm, and Slinky Dog.
Bo Peep’s updated look isn’t the only new addition to the franchise. Joining the cast is Tony Hale, who’s voicing a new character named Forky – more of an arts and crafts project than a toy – as well as comedy duo Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, who are playing a plush duck and bunny, respectively.
Both appeared in various teasers prior to the trailer, hinting at a much more expanded universe, rife with new toys for the franchises’ classic characters to interact with.

A new plaything joins the old gang for next summer’s Toy Story 4, from Disney Pixar, and this new teaser trailer sets the table for his arrival.
“I don’t belong here,” screams Forky, “I’m not a toy!”.
As the welcoming tones of Judy Collins’ version of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” play out, the familiar pals from the previous films – Sheriff Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Rex, Slinky Dog, etc. – appear in ring-around-the-rosie style, finally coming to Forky, a plastic utensil child-crafted with pipe-cleaners and google eyes. Chaos follows.
The new character is voiced by comedian Tony Hale (Veep). Says director Josh Cooley, “Like most people, I assumed that Toy Story 3 was the end of the story. And it was the end of Woody’s story with Andy. But just like in life, every ending is a new beginning.

As best of the year lists roll out across the internet, TV critics and fans are reflecting on everything they loved about the year in television. From their favorite shows to their favorite performances and even the most shocking moments, nearly every aspect of the small screen is admired — typically, in list form.
But while plenty of lists double up across various websites through a multitude of voices, one list is built collectively and shared immediately: the best TV lines of 2017.
Spearheaded each year by Variety TV Critic Mo Ryan, the annual tradition of honoring the best quotes of the year began early Monday afternoon with the hashtag #BestTVLines2017 and Ryan’s first selection:

James Mangold is not hiding his distaste for Hollywood Elsewhere founder and writer Jeff Wells. The “Logan” director lashed out against Wells on Twitter after the film writer made a jab at Mangold’s latest Wolverine film by calling it “too violent.”

Mangold replied to Wells by saying he could’ve predicted his negative reaction. Wells tried to amend his comment by linking to his article “Logan.” Wells’ piece isn’t exactly positive, although it does praise Dafne Keen’s breakout performance.
“Really? Jesus, Jeff. I’m gonna have to assume you have aspergers or otherwise I just can’t keep up the good will,” Mangold replied. “Aw, fuck it. Shove your self promoting links to your crooked prognostications up your pompous ass. And find a new hairstyle, that pomp is getting Trumpy.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) is facing backlash over this year’s Golden Globe nominations for Best Director. The five filmmakers who earned a nomination this year are all men: Guillermo del Toro (“The Shape of Water”), Martin McDonagh (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), Christopher Nolan (“Dunkirk”), Ridley Scott (“All the Money in the World”), and Steven Spielberg (“The Post”).
Considering what a strong year it was for women and minority directors like Greta Gerwig, Jordan Peele, Dee Rees, and Patty Jenkins, it’s especially unfortunate how male-dominated the race is this year. Del Toro is the only minority nominated in what many people agree should’ve been a banner year for an inclusive Best Director race.

Many pundits expected at least Gerwig or Peele to earn a Best Director nomination at the Globes.

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for this week’s episode of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” “Getting Over Jeff.”]
First, let’s quickly talk about the gourd.
“Manuel [Baca], our props guy, was so proud. He had actually found that gourd at some festival the weekend before and he had bought it and picked it up because he thought it was so fantastic and phallic-looking,” Donna Lynne Champlin told IndieWire, explaining one of the inanimate stars of this week’s “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.”
The squash in question is one of the centerpiece flourishes in “The Very First Penis I Saw,” the impossibly fun sequence from a pivotal episode for Paula, Champlin’s character. But aside from the grocery-store frolicking and innuendo, the song actually helped focus a lot of the emotion that made this another vital step in Paula’s journey on the show.

There’s little on screenwriter Steven Rogers’ resume to indicate that he was interested in writing something like “I, Tonya,” the year’s most irreverent – and unexpectedly inspiring – biopic that follows the exploits of one of America’s signature fallen stars. After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September (where Neon and 30West acquired it for 2017 release), the film has steadily picked up awards steam, particularly for the mother-daughter performances of Allison Janney and Margot Robbie, who are both nominated for Critics’ Choice and Indie Spirit awards.
“I’m loving this,” Rogers said with a laugh. “Because you don’t get it on every movie, so when you do get it, you just hold it closely. Never one time, ever, when I started to write about Tonya Harding and Jeff Gillooly, did I think about awards season. The whole experience has been kind of miraculous.”
Rogers isn’t exaggerating.

Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer became one of America’s most horrifying figures after he murdered 17 men and boys — killing and eating many of them to satisfy a twisted sexual kink — over the course of 12 years. But in writer-director Marc Meyer’s “My Friend Dahmer,” the future monster’s just a troubled teenage outcast. Meyer’s meticulous late-’70s period drama, based on the graphic novel by Dahmer’s old high school acquaintance John “Derf” Backderf, takes a revisionist approach to Dahmer epitomized by the casting of Disney star Ross Lynch in the lead role.

Every Oscar season needs at least one unpredictable dark horse, and this year “I, Tonya” fits the bill. The act killed Harding’s future in ice skating. Sebastian Stan stars as Gilooly, while Allison Janney plays Harding’s overbearing and cruel mother.

The last few weeks have felt like an endless marathon for this writer, trying to keep up with a myriad of cinematic delights, including this latest batch of films I saw while at the 2017 Fantastic Fest last month. Read on for my thoughts on this trio of amazing indie movies, including first-time feature filmmaker Coralie Fargeat’s Revenge, My Friend Dahmer from Marc Meyer, and Let the Corpses Tan by Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani.

For those obsessed with the lurid things in life, a campy new biopic on notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer’s teenage years is sure to satisfy. In the official trailer for “My Friend Dahmer,” which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, Disney Channel star Ross Lynch inhabits the role of the teenaged murderer with an eerie calmness. Anne Heche makes a brief but memorable appearance as Dahmer’s troubled mother, and Dallas Roberts (“Dallas Buyers Club”) plays his tortured father.
One of America’s most infamous serial killers, Dahmer murdered 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991 before being captured and incarcerated. “My Friend Dahmer” tells the story of what happened to make him that way. Directed by Marc Meyers, the film is based on a graphic novel by Derf Backderf, who knew Dahmer in high school and appears as a character in the film.

Few television series — especially those just unspooling their long-awaited ninth season — would be bold enough to trade on the concept that absolutely nothing has changed over the intervening years. Characters grow, situations change. But Larry David’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” is not just any television series.
Six years after the HBO series wrapped its eighth season, Hollywood’s favorite malcontent is back, and he’s the exact same curmudgeon audiences love (and his friends love to hate). The Larry David of “Curb” doesn’t evolve, and never learns, and HBO has even made that the backbone of the show’s marketing campaign: This season’s official trailer literally boasts that “nothing has changed.”
Nonetheless, it was a long hiatus, and although the cameras weren’t rolling, surely Larry got into plenty of misunderstandings and stepped into countless of awkward situations during the intervening years. The last season saw him and...

Everyone notices the eyes first, languid, those of a somnambulist. Robert Mitchum, calm and observant, is a presence that, through passivity, enamors a viewer. His face is as effulgent as moonlight. The man smolders, with that boozy, baritone voice, seductive and soporific, a cigarette perched between wispy lips below which is a chin cleft like a geological fault. He’s slithery with innuendo. There’s an effortless allure to it all, a mix of malaise and braggadocio, a cocksure machismo and a hint of fragility. He’s ever-cool, a paradox, “radiating heat without warmth,” as Richard Brody said. A poet, a prodigious lover and drinker, a bad boy; his penchant for marijuana landed him in jail, and in the photographs from his two-month stay he looks like a natural fit. He sits, wrapped in denim, legs spread wide, hair shiny and slick, holding a cup of coffee. His mouth is...

Jim Carrey is reuniting with his “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” director Michel Gondry to star in a new half-hour comedy for Showtime. “Kidding,” which has been given a 10-episode order, will represent Carrey’s first series regular role in more than two decades.
“Kidding” stars Carrey as Jeff, also known as beloved children’s TV personality Mr. Pickles. Here’s the logline: “A beacon of kindness and wisdom to America’s impressionable young minds and the parents who grew up with him – [Jeff] also anchors a multimillion dollar branding empire. But when this beloved personality’s family – wife, two sons, sister and father – begins to implode, Jeff finds no fairy tale or fable or puppet will guide him through this crisis, which advances faster than his means to cope. The result: a kind man in a cruel world faces a slow leak of sanity as hilarious as it is heartbreaking.

“I, Tonya” will make you care about Tonya Harding for the first time in a long time. Moreover, “I, Tonya” will make you sympathize with Tonya Harding for the first time. Remembered for her highly contested role in attacking rival figure skater Nancy Kerrigan (when she’s remembered at all), Harding was one of the greatest villains the ’90s ever produced, up there with O.J. Simpson, the T-1000, and the guy who invented Crystal Pepsi. She was the perfect punchline for a country that always needs someone to laugh at; a country that hinges on the idea of upward mobility but would rather punch down than pull up. Now, thanks to the bitter and bleakly funny black comedy that “Lars and the Real Girl” director Craig Gillespie has made about the most sordid years of her life, Tonya Harding is finally getting a chance to tell her side of the story.

For fans of David Gordon Green’s more dramatic leanings — think his earlier films like “George Washington” and “All the Real Girls,” less the “Your Highness” and “The Sitter” years — his fact-based “Stronger” offers not precisely a return to form, but a return to his ability to find great meaning in world-weary emotions. His most grounded film yet and his first attempt to dramatizing a true story, “Stronger” takes an unvarnished tone to the kind of heartstring-pulling biopic that other directors might simply play for emotional fireworks, turning in a far more nuanced and satisfying experience in the process. Bolstered by sterling turns from stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Tatiana Maslany, and Miranda Richardson, the film is a showcase for what Green has always been able to do so well, and what his actors continue to excel at.

There’s a lot I’m very excited about returning: “BoJack Horseman” Season 4, as just one example, is truly extraordinary. Back in June, the 2017 Los Angeles Film Festival took over Southern California, hosting screenings at numerous locations and featuring numerous genre films that horror and sci-fi fans should definitely keep on their radars in the coming months. Here are my thoughts on three of the movies that I had the opportunity to watch at the festival:
Replace: As far genre feature film debuts go, co-writer/director Norbert Keil has a lot to be proud of with Replace, a stunning and beautifully executed cinematic mystery that’s part body horror/part psychological thriller. Last week, we got a Trailer for filmmaker David Gordon Green’s next movie, the Boston Marathon related biopic Stronger. It seems like a big time showcase for Jake Gyllenhaal and could be tailor made to score him some Oscar attention. The film is coming a year after Patriots Day did justice to the tragedy, though this project seems to be more intimately positioned. With a September 22nd release date currently scheduled, fall festivals may not fully be in play, but awards possibilities just might. More on that in a bit, and of course the Trailer will be found below, but first…it’s analysis time! The film is a presumably feel good story in the end, centering on Jeff Bauman (Jake Gyllenhaal), a victim of the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. There to support his partner Erin Hurley (Tatiana Maslany), who is running in the race, he’s seriously injuring...

The 89th annual Academy Awards have officially kicked off — and Jimmy Kimmel wasted no time in getting everyone laughing.
The host took over after Justin Timberlake‘s upbeat opening number to rib on Hollywood’s best and brightest. Kimmel predictably harped in on his bitter “rival” Matt Damon, as he pretended to put their long-running feud behind while actually continuing to insult him.
Another highlight came at the end when he referenced President Donald Trump’s tweets calling nominee Meryl Streep “overrated.” Kimmel remarked on Streep’s long career and her record-breaking 2o nominations before asking the actress to stand...

The “Bob’s Burgers Music Album” is coming your way May 12, and it’s loaded up with more goodies than a Poutine on the Ritz Burger.
This is not the time to be modern and go the digital route for your music. Hell, even buying the CDs isn’t old-school enough. Instead, if you buy the the “Bob’s Burgers Music Album” deluxe limited-edition gift box, that comes with three LPs (in “condiment-colored” vinyl?!), a Bob’s Buskers seven-inch white vinyl LP, a hardbound lyric book (for those times you need to know more than just “Butts, Butts, Butts”), a sheet music collection, three original posters and a lot more. What is “more” you ask? Take a look at the unboxing video below featuring Teddy’s hairy arms and mumbly narration to see everything:
Of course, the two-cd album is still chockfull of “Bob’s Burgers” audio goodness, which amounts to 107 songs.

Mubi is partnering with the New York Film Festival to present highlights from Projections, a festival program of film and video work that expands upon our notions of what the moving image can do and be. James N. Kienitz Wilkin's Indefinite Pitch (2016), recipient of the festival's Kazuko Trust Award, is showing on Mubi in many countries around the world from October 18 - November 16, 2016.I’ve come to the conclusion that movies always communicate the circumstances in which they were made, and most of the time, these circumstances are unconscious influences. If one identifies with movies, or has dedicated one’s life to, or expects to make a living from, movies, then circumstantially, one's personal ambitions, dreams and memories get riskily exposed. Indefinite Pitch tries to pinpoint this. But not everything can be pinned down. In music, not all instruments make notes with a clear pitch. The rising and falling background...

How’d that beloved tune from the “pre-fab four” go? “Another Pleasant Valley Sunday, here in status-symbol land”. Well, they might’ve been crooning about the locale of this new comedy. Everybody’s lawn is perfect, right out of American Beauty. Maybe even “picture perfect”, but more than a bit dull. Some of the residents perhaps secretly hope that things will get shaken up a tad. Ah, be careful what you wish for, so goes the old saying. That’s what happened in the final John Belushi/Dan Aykroyd team-up in 1981, Neighbors. But instead of that off-kilter, way-too friendly couple, the new arrivals bore more than a passing resemblance to Mr. & Mrs. Smith (not the Hitchcock comedy, but the first pairing of Pitt and Jolie). That’s the premise, as two “normals” risk life and limb when they’re Keeping Up With The Joneses.

Keeping Up With The Joneses is your garden-variety suburban spy comedy, and while that might not sound “garden-variety,” try acting surprised even once during Greg Mottola’s new comedy. Admittedly, it’s not the most humorless cul-de-sac thriller (without the thrills), it’s just incredibly unmemorable like so many mainstream jokers of late. It’s not as destructively devious as Mr. And Mrs. Smith, nor is it witty enough to exploit squeaky-clean parents who turn into unexpected secret agents. A nice guy plays overly nice, his nosy wife snoops excessively and the new perfect neighbors turn out to be exactly who they aren’t – so, again, it’s just like almost every other espionage comedy you’ve ever seen.

Mark Duplass has found his happy place. At a time when many independent filmmakers are struggling to get movies made, the 39-year-old is enjoying the kind of artistic freedom most filmmakers only dream about, churning out low budget movies that afford him virtually complete creative control.

Netflix released the whole second season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Friday, and I'm going to offer some overall thoughts on the season, followed by specific takes on each episode, coming up just as soon as I ask whether Cate Blanchett is really a great actress, or just tall... Netflix made the first six episodes available to critics, and while I enjoyed most of those early installments, the back half of the season was by far the stronger part, and the phase of things where the shift from making episodes for NBC to making them for Netflix was much more apparent. Season 1 also turned more serialized towards the end, with the trial of the Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne, and it had its emotional moments as Kimmy faced down her captor. But the later episodes of season 2 felt darker and more complicated in their attempt to address Kimmy's emotional damage.

Nashville's Connie Britton Previews the 'Cold, Hard Reality' Rayna and Deacon Face After the Wedding
You’d think that, after all of their romantic ups and downs over the years, Nashville‘s Rayna and Deacon would’ve at least gotten to celebrate their decades-in-the-making wedding with a little honeymoon. Perhaps sipping frosty umbrella drinks beachside at an all-inclusive resort where the housekeeping staff makes animals out of their towels each evening. Heck, we would’ve even accepted a secluded, pants-optional weekend at Deke’s cabin.

When asked about their inclination for kidnapping comedies, Joel Coen recently told Variety, “I’m not sure why. They are all very different. We should probably give that a rest.” He and Ethan Coen are responsible for three of the finest kidnapping comedies ever made, and are perhaps adding a fourth to their résumé this weekend.
The addition of comedy into a crime story is hardly a new prospect, but the kidnapping comedy is a wonderfully specific little nook in this often darkly funny cinematic world. The Coens practically own this genre — if you can call it a genre –having covered and re-covered it in such uniquely different ways.
Their fourth kidnapping comedy (although I doubt they would refer to any of these films as such), Hail, Caesar!, follows a Hollywood studio fixer (Josh Brolin) whose work life begins to unravel after the kidnapping of one of his biggest stars,...

According to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, Time Warner is in the early stages of conversations that would see the media giant buy 25% of Hulu. Seems rational enough to me. But in the story, one of the ideas that is floated is that Time Warner is worried about cord cutting and looking to downplay or even end one of the main functions of Hulu as a service by doing away with next-day streaming episodes of current TV shows. If it's true, then my relationship with Hulu Plus will end immediately after a very happy nine year subscription to the service. I was an early adopter, first signing up in late 2007, and, yes, I would love to cut the cable cord completely. I have Charter Communications as my cable/Internet provider right now, and my service on the cable side is, in a word, awful. I detest cable.
