Amazon's Prime Video has renewed its hit animated series Secret Level for a second season, hot on the heels of releasing more episodes from the highly rated first season. Which should probably be a surprise to absolutely no one, considering the series' Rotten Tomato score and audience reaction to the episodes we've thus far been served.
Set within the worlds of some of the most popular video games out there, Secret Level's adult-animated anthology series formula allows it to integrate stories from beloved franchises, such as Dungeons & Dragons, Sifu, New World, Unreal Tournament, Warhammer 40,000, Pac-Man, Crossfire, Armored Core, The Outer Worlds, Mega Man, and Honor of Kings. The series even created an episode around the canceled game Concord, as an ode to all the hard work that goes into creating these games and their worlds. Plot: A new adult-animated anthology series featuring original stories set within the worlds of some of the world’s most beloved video games. From the creative minds behind Love, Death + Robots, each of the 15 episodes is a celebration of games and gamers.
Review: Deadpool director Tim Miller is a major animation supporter and spent a decade trying to bring a new feature film anthology based on the cult classic film Heavy Metal, based on the long-running magazine of the same name, to the big screen. When that project failed to come together, Miller helped develop Love, Death + Robots at Netflix, a concept similar to Heavy Metal but with a focus on contemporary animation styles. The three-volume animated anthology was popular with genre fans and had some cross-over appeal with mainstream audiences. Miller aims to reach a different subculture with animated shorts collected in the new Prime Video series Secret Level.

In the genre of horror gaming, few titles have managed to leave as lasting an impression as Red Barrels’ Outlast (2013). While Alan Wake (2010) had already established a successful formula of blending supernatural elements with meta-narrative storytelling, Outlast‘s creators deliberately chose to take their horror in a completely different direction.

As we reflect on what makes a truly scary game, especially in light of Alan Wake 2‘s recent success with its mind-bending psychological horror, it’s fascinating to revisit writer J.T. Petty’s approach to crafting Outlast‘s narrative. His philosophy on horror storytelling stands in stark contrast to the metaphysical elements that have become increasingly common in modern horror games.
A Different Kind of Horror Story
When Outlast first hit the shelves, it stood out for its commitment to realism in a genre often dominated by supernatural threats and psychological twists.

Secret Level executive producer and supervising director Dave Wilson teases how the series will adapt Pac-Man. The Prime Video show is an animated anthology series, featuring 15 standalone episodes that adapt familiar video games characters and brands, including Pac-Man and Warhammer. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Keanu Reeves, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt, Temuera Morrison, Emily Swallow, and Gabriel Luna are among the many members of the series' star-studded cast.
While speaking with Screen Rant at New York City Comic Con, Wilson hinted at the bold and surprising way that Pac-Man was adapted in one of Secret Level's episodes. He explained how Secret Level's creative approach differed greatly from a more traditional process, yet this departure worked well for the series' take on Pac-Man. Wilson also teased the abundance of weirdness in the episode that was grounded in the inherent weirdness of the Pac-Man games. Check out Wilson's comments below:

Creature Features as a subgenre of horror tend to be in direct response to the cultural anxieties of the people that create them. The most obvious example, of course, is Godzilla. A film produced by Japan in the wake of Americas nuclear assault, its easy to see why a giant lizard that feeds on radiation would be terrifying for the audience it was created for. For its part, The Burrowers is a 2008 horror-western set against the backdrop of the American frontier in 1879. Written and directed by J.T. Petty and starring Clancy Brown, William Mapother, Laura Leighton, Karl Geary, and Alexandra Edmo, The Burrowers is an exploration of the evils of settler-colonialism and white supremacy through its protagonists' search for missing settlers.

Since the earliest days of Hollywood, the Western genre has proven to be incredibly versatile, with visionaries like John Ford, Sergio Leone and Howard Hawks bringing their own styles to the big screen. While most fans of the Old West know it for epic, classical and revisionist stories, horror has also been a core part of the genre for decades. Dating back to the earliest uses of claymation monsters in B-movie Westerns, filmmakers have used the desolate, lawless setting to great effect in telling scary stories.
Where some movies will lean into the horror element more, others make the scares almost incidental to the Old West setting. Regardless, the combined use of two genres that are best known for tension, isolation and danger has made for some truly great pieces of cinema. Ranging from overlooked popcorn movies to surprisingly deep takes on the American West, these movies are a great source of entertainment.

A year ago, Legendary Entertainment’s remake of the infamous 1978 box office hit Faces of Death (get it Here) went into production in Louisiana, with Barbie Ferreira of the HBO series Euphoria, Dacre Montgomery of Netflix’s Stranger Things, Josie Totah of the recent Saved by the Bell revival, Jermaine Fowler of The Blackening, and singer Charli Xcx making up the cast. We haven’t heard a release date for this one yet, but it did just take a major step forward: it has gotten its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. They have announced that the Faces of Death remake has received an R rating for strong bloody violence and gore, sexual content, nudity, language and drug use.

It’s a brand new year, and Deep Cuts Rising is back to spotlight less talked about horror movies. The first installment of 2024 features selections reflecting the month of January.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings feature zombies, a killer New Year’s party and more.
Knife of Ice (1972)
Image: All but too late, Ida Galli (as Evelyn Stewart) spots the knife-wielding killer behind her in Knife of Ice.
Directed by Umberto Lenzi.
Giallo fans have designated both January and July as months for celebrating the genre. So it’s a great time to get acquainted with these stylish mysteries. Novices will naturally be drawn to the more popular and acclaimed filmmakers that gialli have to offer — Dario Argento, Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci — but others like Umberto Lenzi shouldn’t be disregarded.

Though not the most popular of subgenres within film, horror westerns have been gaining decent, fan-favorite traction as of late. The earliest example is The Rawhide Terror (1934), directed by Bruce M. Mitchell and Jack Nelson from a script that was penned by the latter. From there, one other horror western from the earlier years of Hollywood remains worth noting today. Featuring Michael Pate as a vampire gunfighter, Curse of the Undead (1959) isn't held in high regard, or anything. But it is noted by historians as an early example of a western-horror film.
It would be several more decades before the subgenre truly took off with regard to worldwide popularity. Filmmakers pumped out B-movie-level products until a certain release in the 1980s, called Near Dark (1987). A neo-Western horror hybrid, it's one of the greatest films of its kind, seeing direction under the great Kathryn Bigelow from a script she co-wrote alongside Eric Red.

The Outlast Trials: The Murkoff Collections, a comic book tie-in to The Outlast Trials, had its first issue released last week. Now developer Red Barrels has released the second issue of the two-part digital comic book series written by J.T. Petty, the scriptwriter for both Outlast games and comics, and illustrated by Gmb Chomichuk.
For those not up on the series’ lore, the Murkoff Corporation uses science and cutting-edge psychotherapy to “promote liberty, prosperity, and the strength of free markets around the world.” The Murkoff Collections Department in particular searches for assets, subjects, and techniques potentially useful to the organization, especially in the buildup of the potentially revolutionary Sinyala Facility.
This second issue focuses on Phylis Futterman, aka Mother Gooseberry. Like the first issue’s Leland Coyle, Mother Gooseberry is an Ex-Pop, and one of the antagonists in The Outlast Trials. She is a disgraced, mentally unstable children’s show host suffering from psychosis.

Fans of Red Barrels’ The Outlast Trials now have some light reading while they wait on the next update for the Early Access game. Per ComicBook.com, fans can now check out the first issue of the comic book tie-in with The Outlast Trials: The Murkoff Collections.
Written by Jt Petty and illustrated by Gmb Chomichuk, The Outlast Trials: The Murkoff Collections focuses on Leland Coyle, the former policeman who was enlisted by the Murkoff Corporation as one of the Experimental Population or Ex-Pops. For those who haven’t played the game, the Ex-Pops are failed test subjects of the early stages of the Corporation experiments, and are one of the main antagonists in The Outlast Trials.

Legendary Entertainment’s remake of the infamous 1978 box office hit Faces of Death (get it Here) is now filming in Louisiana, and Deadline reports that Jermaine Fowler of Sorry to Bother You, The Drop, Coming 2 America, and the upcoming horror comedy The Blackening has been cast in the movie. Fowler joins previously announced cast members Barbie Ferreira of the HBO series Euphoria, Dacre Montgomery of Netflix’s Stranger Things, Josie Totah of the recent Saved by the Bell revival, and singer Charli Xcx.
The first Faces of Death was about a pathologist exploring gruesome ways to die via footage purportedly culled from around the world. In reality, most of the death scenes were staged, but no matter, the movie had its producers’ desired effect: outrage, revulsion, banning, and, of course, a money-making hit that spawned sequels and imitators. I never imagined I would someday be writing about a Faces of Death remake that has stars of well-known TV shows in its cast, and yet here we are. About two years ago, we heard that writer Isa Mazzei and director Daniel Goldhaber, the team that brought us the Netflix release Cam, had been hired to craft a remake of the infamous 1978 box office hit Faces of Death (get it Here) for Legendary Entertainment and producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford’s company Angry Films. A few weeks ago, Barbie Ferreira of the HBO series Euphoria and Dacre Montgomery of Netflix’s Stranger Things were cast in the remake. And now Deadline has broken the news that Josie Totah, who had a role in the recent Saved by the Bell revival, has also signed on to be in Faces of Death.

There’s something inherently terrifying about subterranean horror. Getting trapped underground creates a tense survival scenario thanks to various dangers. But what about what’s lurking in the dark? Survival horror with carnivorous creatures provides fertile ground for fear.
Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) is back with the brand new underground monster movie The Lair, which comes to theaters and on Digital and VOD on October 28, 2022.
In The Lair, “Royal Air Force pilot Lt. Kate Sinclair (Charlotte Kirk) is shot down over Afghanistan and finds refuge in an abandoned underground bunker where deadly man-made biological weapons – half human, half alien – are awakened.”
Jonathan Howard (Thor: The Dark World) and Jamie Bamber (“Battlestar Galactica”) also star.
Charlotte Kirk co-wrote the screenplay with Neil Marshall.
In anticipation of Marshall’s return to the subterranean creature feature, we look back at eight horror movies that feature underground monsters.

Of all the horror films on the release schedule, perhaps one of the most intriguing and enigmatic is James Wan's Malignant. Previously slated to come out last year, like many movies, Malginant was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but Warner Bros. has rescheduled the film for a theatrical and IMAX release on September 10th, along with a simultaneous HBO Max streaming release for 31 days.
Directed by Wan from a screenplay by Akela Cooper and J.T. Petty (based on a story idea by Wan and Ingrid Bisu), Malignant stars Annabelle Wallis, Maddie Hasson, George Young, Michole Briana White, Jake Abel, Jacqueline McKenzie, and Ingrid Bisu. The film is produced by Wan and Michael Clear.
Wan announced the new release date for Malignant on Instagram (see below), accompanied by a new image that teases the giallo-esque tone of the movie, which has been rated R for "strong horror violence and gruesome images,...
