Dolly Parton made a career-defining choice when she refused to let Elvis Presley record one of her biggest songs — and it may have made her a lifelong enemy in his camp. Standing her ground on copyright, Parton chose business over flattery, a move she calls the most important of her career.

While it cost her a collaboration with the King, it cemented her as a music industry powerhouse.

Elvis Presley wanted I Will Always Love You, but Dolly Parton wasn’t about to give it away — not even to the King himself.
Back in the ‘70s, when Parton’s heartfelt ballad was climbing the charts, Presley expressed interest in recording it. For Parton, it was a dream come true.

It’s no secret that the Western genre has changed in recent years. It’s no longer acceptable to lean into the old-fashioned — and frankly offensive — “cowboys versus Indians” tales. However, that doesn’t mean all “old” Western content is steeped in offensive stereotypes. While many can’t be separated from their unpleasant cultural norms, there are still some examples of culturally conscientious Western filmmaking. One of the most prominent of these films is — perhaps surprisingly — DreamWorks’ Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.
Marketed as a children’s film, Spirit was both praised and ridiculed by contemporary critics. Viewers hailed its rich visuals and toe-tapping soundtrack. At the same time, others criticized DreamWorks’ Western tale for its culturally conscious narrative. Among its target audience, Spirit joined the lineup of quintessential 2000s “horse girl” movies, but a more mature rewatch quickly reveals its deeper truths.

Austin Butler is one of the biggest rising stars in Hollywood after his appearances in films like Elvis, Dune: Part Two, and The Bikeriders. Butler began his career as a teen actor and went on to work with acclaimed filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino, Baz Luhrmann, Jim Jarmusch, and Denis Villeneuve.
Butler gained more prominence when he played legendary singer Elvis Presley in the biopic Elvis. For over 30 years, Randy Quaid was one of Hollywood's most colorful and dependable character actors. His career got off to a propitious start with his appearance in Peter Bogdanovich's 1971 classic "The Last Picture Show," and quickly took flight when he earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his portrayal of the sensitive, soon-to-be-imprisoned screw-up Meadows in "The Last Detail." 10 years later, Quaid achieved film doofus immortality as the loan-seeking rube Cousin Eddie Johnson in Harold Ramis' "National Lampoon's Vacation." Quaid had been funny in movies before, but now he was a proper drama-comedy double threat, and his brand of performance wasn't the type to curdle. He had a long, profitable journey ahead of him provided he didn't do something crazy like accuse the industry's most powerful people of trying to kill him.
Randy Quaid's downfall was so surreal it felt like performance art like he was playing Cousin Eddie on peyote.

Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley is more than just another music documentary; it’s a comprehensive look at one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most crucial moments. The film, directed by Jason Hehir, the creator behind the acclaimed sports documentary The Last Dance, follows Elvis Presley’s spectacular career resurrection through the legendary 1968 Comeback Special.
By 1968, Elvis was a shadow of his former self. Hollywood had turned the rebellious rock superstar into a bland movie star, producing forgettable flicks in which he’d uncomfortably sing to animals and follow conventional scripts. Colonel Tom Parker, his manager, had gradually drained his once-revolutionary musical soul, leaving admirers wondering whether the real Elvis had vanished forever.
The documentary methodically follows Elvis’ journey from his childhood roots—listening to music outside Black churches in Mississippi—to his early success at Sun Records, his military service, and his Hollywood career.

Netflix's documentary Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley has allowed audiences a glimpse into the life of one of pop culture's most famous figures, and the iconic singer has numerous films to check out next. Aside from being one of the defining musical artists of the 20th century, Elvis Presley's acting career saw him star in 31 films, primarily including musicals that showcased his singing talent and charisma.
Throughout the 1950s, Elvis was a fairly consistent box-office success, with his controversial manager, Colonel Tom Parker, dictating many of his acting choices. Presley wanted to partake in more serious roles, but those films, like Flaming Star, earned less at the box office. Movies like Jailhouse Rock and Viva Las Vegas were some of the highest-grossing films of their respective years, proving a desire for his musical movies with accompanied soundtrack albums.

A brand-new Netflix documentary, Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley, reveals insights into Elvis Presley's 1968 Comeback Specialbut not all aspects of the international icon's history are captured in the movie. Return of the King focuses on the efforts by Presley and his team, particularly his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, to kick-start his career once more after Presley's time in the army and myriad other factors reduced public interest to a certain degree. Given this specific focus, many biographical details are absent in Return of the King.

Feeling dissatisfied with the lack of artistry in his movies, the special was a return to form for the iconic singer.

Netflix's Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley revisits that period in Presleys career when he was at a crossroads. Converted seven years previously from singer to movie star at the behest of his influential manager, Colonel Tom Parker, Presley was dissatisfied and restless. Elvis Presley's movie roles had become plastic, fake, and unreal, and he yearned to get back to singing again. With Elvis having taken the musical world by storm in 1956, Parker had been quick to capitalize on his new cash cow's box-office looks and charisma and signed him up for his first movie, Love Me Tender.
The film was panned by critics, but adored by Presley's legion of devoted and mostly female fans. Three movies with Elvis Presley as an actor dropped over the next two years, culminating in King Creole in 1958, before Presley was drafted into the U.S. Army and shipped abroad.

Netflix's Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley revisits the 1968 television special that marked Presley's return to live performance after a seven-year hiatus. Netflix's Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley revisits the 1968 television special that marked Presley's return to live performance after a seven-year hiatus. Presley first exploded onto the national music scene when he appeared on the Dorsey Brothers Stage Show several times between January and March 1956. 21-year-old Elvis was entirely unknown, but the show's exposure led to the release of his first single - "Heartbreak Hotel"- and a September appearance on the hugely popular Ed Sullivan Show, the platform that propelled him to super-stardom. Sullivan paid $50,000 for the privilege.

Reagan is a film with a definitive vibe. It recalls some of the movies that emerged from the faith-based Angel Studios, such as Sound of Hope, Sound of Freedom, and Sight. These films have a certain point or issue to convey and rarely feel as if they were brought to life organically. A plot exists, but it seems outshined by the producers and writers who want you to get something. Think: eighth-grade history film.
Reagan doesnt suffer as much as some of those movies, but the point is clear: Director Sean McNamaras biopic on Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States, is not going to go in-depth or really explore the inner workings of Reagan nor some of the things he was most criticized for. Instead, it opts to shine a flattering light on the man, capturing him as some kind of glorified soul, somebody who came from...

Given the iconic figure at the center of the hit biopic, many fans wonder how accurate the Elvis movie is. Baz Luhrmann's movie offers an ostentatious look at the life of Elvis Presley, and as with any Luhrmann project, accuracy inevitably gives way to showmanship. Told through flashbacks from the perspective of Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks), Elvis chronicles The King's career from early obscurity to international icon. Elvis was a box office hit and earned plenty of award recognition, including nominations for Austin Butler as Best Actor and Best Picture. However, the accuracy of the movie is still in question.
While Elvis Presley and Colonel Tom Parker's relationship was certainly fraught, and even fractious, Elvis doesn't provide a fully-rounded representation of their time together. Some scenes either entirely invent or twist events to suit the narrative of Parker as an out-and-out antagonist.

Thanks to Baz Luhrmann's electrifying 2022 biopic "Elvis," fans new and old (some very old at this point) have enthusiastically delved into the cultural icon's past to get a more nuanced understanding of how this Tennessee-born mama's career took so many unexpected turns before he collapsed in a pharmaceutically-induced heap at the age of 42.
Every chapter of Presley's life is packed with decisions both brilliant and personally/professionally self-destructive. Indeed, his tragic arc might just be the definitive showbiz cautionary tale. His was an incandescent (if highly derivative) talent that attracted opportunists and admirers; he was treated as a product, and, thus, had an awful tendency to treat those who genuinely loved him with the respect and tenderness they deserved.

From Whitney Houston to Elvis, there is no shortage of iconic singers who inspire sweeping films that dramatize their life stories. No matter the genre, cinematic features have captured the careers of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley to country singer Jonny Cash. Most recently, Back to Black (2024) launched in theaters to capture the life and musical career of Amy Winehouse.

Tom Hanks is known for his good-guy characters in his films. Be it romantic comedies such as You’ve Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle, or dramas such as Forrest Gump and Philadelphia, the actor always plays roles that represent the morally right side of humanity. With his penchant for such sweet roles, he has been nicknamed the Dad of Hollywood.
However, Hanks reportedly does not have the need to stick to such roles. He recently played Elvis Presley’s antagonistic manager Col. Tom Parker in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, which was different from his usual good-guy roles. He has also mentioned that he fought against decisions made by directors to portray him as a good guy, especially in a pivotal scene in his Oscar-winning film Forrest Gump.

For Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé released her own interpretation of Dolly Parton’s classic song “Jolene.” Despite significantly reworking the song’s lyrics, Beyoncé nonetheless gave Parton full songwriting credit.
Parton is credited as the sole songwriter of “Jolene” on Cowboy Carter, while Beyoncé is listed as the performer and co-producer, according to credits released on Spotify and other DSPs. This suggests that any and all songwriting royalties from the song will go to Parton, and not Beyoncé.
The news isn’t exactly surprising. Parton has long been protective of her music, even going as far to deny Elvis Presley’s request to cover “I Will Always Love You” in 1974 after Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, demanded that they share royalties.
Upon the release of Cowboy Carter, Parton lauded Beyoncé’s reinterpretation of “Jolene,” writing on Instagram: “Wow, I just heard ‘Jolene.’ Beyoncé is giving that girl some trouble and she deserves it!

The news isn’t exactly surprising. Parton has long been protective of her music, even going as far to deny Elvis Presley’s request to cover “I Will Always Love You” in 1974 after Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, demanded that they share royalties.

Flaming Star showcases Elvis Presley's unfulfilled acting potential under the direction of Don Siegel in a dark and violent Western film. Presley shines in this intense film, revealing Pacer's conflicted emotions and identity through expression and movement, not just words. Despite initial promise, Presley's serious acting ambitions were derailed by his manager's focus on profit over artistic quality in subsequent films.
Elvis Presley starred in 31 feature films of increasingly deteriorating quality between 1956 and 1969. Presley’s acting career concluded so disappointingly that it’s easy to forget how much promise Presley showed as an actor in the beginning phase of his acting career. The 1958 musical drama film King Creole, for which Presley received excellent reviews for his performance as a juvenile delinquent and nightclub singer who becomes embroiled in the criminal underworld of New Orleans, was directed by the estimable Michael Curtiz, whose impressive list of feature directorial credits includes The Adventures of Robin Hood,...

This article contains Priscilla spoilers.
Director Sofia Coppola scrubs at tarnished memories for the biopic Priscilla. It’s a bold choice since Elvis Presley disciples prefer admiring unvarnished relics in a still-flourishing golden hue. The film’s primary source and title character, Priscilla Presley, has offered no apologies for her time with the mythological musician, just the facts as she remembers them. These recollections do not diminish her love of the man who came to define her existence, but they cloud his legacy to this day.
“Why are you coming for my dad and my family?” Elvis’ daughter Lisa Marie Presley wrote Coppola after reading an early draft of the screenplay, as per Variety. “My father only comes across as a predator and manipulative,” the provocative emails insinuated. “As his daughter, I don’t read this and see any of my father in this character. Austin Butler spent three years researching and preparing for the role of Elvis Presley and never let go of the singer’s southern drawl throughout this period. Butler’s method acting was so intense for Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis that he decided to tone it down when it came to his role in Dune: Part Two. It would have been very unhealthy for him and everyone surrounding him since he played the sociopathic villain Feyd-Rautha in the film.

Butler’s acting has received praise from critics who deemed the film the definitive sci-fi epic of a generation in their first reviews. Butler along with Florence Pugh, Lea Seydoux, and Christopher Walken are the new additions to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune sequel.

Elvis's film career declined due to his manager's focus on money rather than quality, but Change of Habit showcased his potential as an actor. Despite limitations, Elvis displayed charm and screen presence in his final film, relying on his own charisma to carry the movie. Elvis missed out on a potentially game-changing role in A Star Is Born, a missed opportunity that haunted him until his death.
Elvis Presley starred in 31 feature films of increasingly negligible quality between 1956 and 1969, beginning with the 1956 musical Western film Love Me Tender and ending with the 1969 crime drama musical film Change of Habit. Besides containing Presley's final feature film performance, Change of Habit is the only film in which Presley plays a professional character, in this case, a doctor. At the end of 1968, Presley, who was 34 when the filming of Change of Habit began in the spring of 1969, was at a crossroads in his career.

Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air” is the third collaboration from the team behind HBO’s “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Trio Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg produced the nine-part World War II epic series, which spotlights the men who fought in the 8th Air Force, specifically the men of the 100th Bomb Group. The vivid and vital story finds roots in the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller.
The crew of a typical Eighth Air Force heavy bomber plane included ten men — a pilot and his co-pilot flying the B17, the navigator and the bombardier in the machine’s nose, the flight engineer behind the pilot, the radio operator, two waist gunners, a ball turret gunner and a tail gunner. Not to mention the men who strategized from the bases, the plane engineers and Tuskegee airmen or Royal Airforce pilots who feature in this story.

Paul Giamatti is one of the most highly respected actors working in the industry today, and he’s also quite prolific, with over 115 screen credits to his name. Last night, he won a Golden Globe for his performance in the excellent comedy / drama film The Holdovers – and during a red carpet interview at the event, he revealed there’s one area where he feels his career is lacking: he hasn’t worked on enough horror projects.
Asked if there’s a genre he would love to work in, Giamatti answered, “Horror. I’d like to do more horror. I love horror.” When asked what his favorite horror movie is, he replied, “Oh, that’s a very tricky question. I like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre a lot. I love horror. Love it!” When the interviewer was a bit shocked and appalled that Giamatti is such a Chainsaw fan, Giamatti stood up for it: “Great movie!

Elvis is a comprehensive and visually stunning biopic that captures the essence of Elvis Presley's life and career. Priscilla, on the other hand, focuses on the complex relationship between Priscilla Presley and Elvis, showcasing the fallibility of the man behind the legend. While both films have their strengths, only Elvis will be remembered as a definitive encapsulation of Elvis Presley's essence, with its powerful direction and standout performances.
Baz Luhrmann's Elvis and Sofia Coppola's Priscilla were two Elvis Presley biopics that came out in the 2020s, and one was fit for The King. Tom Hanks underwent an extreme physical transformation for his role as Colonel Tom Parker in Elvis, including wearing a fatsuit and prosthetics to change his appearance. Due to his age and health condition, Hanks couldn't undergo extreme diets or weight changes, so his appearance in the film was entirely achieved through makeup and special effects. In addition to his physical appearance, Hanks also focused on portraying Colonel Parker's distinct accent, which was a crucial aspect of the character's portrayal and added to the negative aura surrounding him.
Tom Hanks' extreme transformation in Elvis raised questions about how much of his appearance was prosthetics, and how much of it was his physical commitment to the role. In the film, the 60-year-old American actor portrayed "Colonel" Tom Parker, Presley's manager. While the Oscar nomination-worthy performance by Austin Butler as Elvis is the highlight of the film, the movie also gives...

The movie "Elvis" directed by Baz Luhrmann provides a fairly accurate portrayal of Elvis Presley's life and fame, but takes some creative liberties for a better narrative. The film focuses on Elvis' career from a young musician to his rise to international fame, with flashbacks from Colonel Tom Parker's perspective. The movie includes footage from Elvis' last performance, using real footage and prosthetics for actor Austin Butler, showcasing the musician's passion, talent, and dedication to his craft.
The 2022 movie Elvis also included a glimpse of Elvis Presley's last performance, and many fans might wonder how accurate the portrayal is. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, the film stars Austin Butler in the titular role, and he earned plenty of award recognition for it, including a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the Oscars among the seven other Academy Awards nominations the film received. Elvis was deeply affected by his mother's death at the age of 23 while he was serving in the military. His close relationship with his mother influenced his future and career as a rock and roll performer. Many close to Elvis believed that he was never the same after his mother's passing, and it ultimately had a lasting impact on him until his death.

Austin Butler spent up to three years perfecting his Elvis voice, studying interviews, performances, and films to create an accurate sound catalog. Butler's portrayal of Elvis in the biopic earned him critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, proving his hard work and dedication paid off. One had the beehive hairdo just right, but the other did a better job on the King’s hip-swing. We asked three Elvis experts to give their verdicts on Sofia Coppola’s dreamy biopic and Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 epic
It’s hard to imagine two films more different than Elvis and Priscilla. The former, directed by Baz Luhrmann and released in 2022, charts the rise and fall of Elvis Presley on an operatic scale, zeroing in on his complex relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, and presenting him as little less than pop’s greatest martyr. The latter, written and directed by Sofia Coppola, based on Priscilla Presley’s memoir and released in the UK this week, is dreamy and intimate, focusing on the life of Priscilla as it related to Elvis, her partner of 14 years during the peak of his career. But which hewed closer to the facts?

Both films, "Priscilla" and "Elvis," offer wildly different interpretations of Elvis and his role in American history, but both Jacob Elordi and Austin Butler give bold and unique performances. Butler's portrayal of Elvis in Luhrmann's film captures the essence of the rock and roll star, while Elordi's performance in "Priscilla" focuses on the intimate moments of Elvis' relationship with Priscilla. Butler's performance as Elvis is larger-than-life and emotionally charged, fitting the grand and unrealistic style of Luhrmann's film, while Elordi's portrayal is smaller and more grounded, suitable for the softer approach of Coppola's movie.

Austin Butler and Kaia Gerber have been dating since December 2021, but for the most part, they prefer to keep their romance away from the spotlight. Other than their casual outings, their red carpet debut as a couple at the 2022 Met Gala, and their loved-up appearance at last year's Cannes Film Festival, neither Butler nor Gerber has publicly revealed much about their relationship.
And they prefer to keep it that way. When Butler was previously asked to comment on his relationship with Gerber in an interview with GQ, he responded, "I don't think there's anything I want to share about that. But thank you for providing the space." However, he did briefly comment on being recently photographed with Gerber. "I go, 'If I don't see the picture, then it doesn't really exist to me,'" he said. "I don't want to be really negative, but there's hardly any job I despise more than paparazzi.

Then, rather than follow Elvis’s well-known rise to fame, the film will explore the couple’s marriage, the birth of their daughter, and their subsequent divorce. Although Spaeny is the ultimate star of the film, there’s growing interest in what Elordi’s portrayal of Elvis will look like, given other recent award-winning depictions of the King of Rock and Roll.

Priscilla Beaulieu was just 14 years old when she first met Elvis Presley, who was 24 at the time. Their age difference made their relationship controversial from the start. Priscilla was 21 years old when she married Elvis Presley in May 1967. The wedding took place at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas and was arranged to satisfy the "morals clause" in Elvis' record contract. Priscilla has defended the age gap in their relationship, stating that Elvis respected her young age when they first got together. She claims they didn't have sexual relations until after they were married, although this claim has been disputed.
