Jeymes Samuel can take the heat when it comes to commentary about his work. And he’s expecting plenty to follow the release of his latest film, The Book of Clarence, a biblical epic set for release on Jan. 12 about a man who, witnessing the rising popularity of Jesus the Messiah, attempts to cash in on that fame by performing fake miracles to get out of debt.
“People always see things the wrong way and they call it backlash,” says the director who also wrote and produced the film and its accompanying soundtrack, which arrives Friday along with the feature. “It’s conversation. I like the smoke. Let’s talk.”
Lakeith Stanfield stars in the lead role of Clarence, which reunites him with his The Harder They Fall co-star R J Cyler among a large ensemble cast that includes Omar Sy, Caleb McLaughlin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anna Diop and James McAvoy.

(New York, New York – October 24, 2023) – Today, Grammy-award winning singer/songwriter/arranger/producer Yebba returns with the long-awaited beautifully-arranged new single bundle, ‘Waterfall (I Adore You),’ which had even hip-hop’s biggest star, Drake, requesting its release. The bundle also includes an alternate version featuring Sweata, all via RCA Records.
The 19-year-old church and New York-bred musician and R&b artist, producer & songwriter Sweata lends his soulful “boom bap infused” touch to the single, written by Yebba and co-penned with James Francies, Justin Tyson, Burniss Travis, Charles Myers and Malachi Mabson. This track is the first of new music to come since her live five-song EP, full of powerful recordings of songs from Yebba’s critically acclaimed, unbarred and honest debut album Dawn.

Three weeks from the release of his new album Jelly Road, guitarist/producer/songwriter Blake Mills has dropped his latest single “There Is No Now. ”

A sallow, elderly woman gets a Phoebe Bridgers makeover in the video for “Wasted,” a track off composer Rob Moose’s upcoming Inflorescence solo EP that features the singer-songwriter. Tattooed hands apply makeup, a “wasted” colorful necklace, and even a grill to the woman’s teeth as Bridgers sings, “Now I’m wasted, wastin’ all of my breath/Wasted again” over Moose’s sparkling, expanding strings.
“Rob is my son,” Bridgers said in a statement. “That’s an inside joke, but there is a deeper connection we share musically, which resembles being blood related.

Beck was the musical guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday night, performing his new tearjerker “Thinking About You” with some help from Blake Mills and Pino Palladino.
With just the three guitarists on stage, Beck’s performance on Kimmel really put the emphasis on the sadness of his lyrics: “Wanna believe in something/ Don’t even have to be true/ Just thinking about you,” he sings, lines that we’ve speculated are about Beck’s ex-wife, with whom he recently split after 14 years together.
Beck has said before that, although he did initiate the divorce, the experience was “heartbreaking” for him. Considering this is one of the first times he’s played “Thinking About You” live in front of a crowd, it’s pretty impressive that he was able to keep his composure throughout the entire Kimmel bit. Erykah Badu, executive producer of the forthcoming documentary about late jazz and R&b trumpeter Roy Hargrove, wastes no time in elaborating on the influence her collaborator and high school classmate exerted on her life and career.
“It started with Roy,” says Badu, who first met Hargrove in 1985, when she was a freshman at Dallas’ Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. “Roy was the first person I met in high school: he in the music department and jazz band, me in dance right next door. We danced to that band’s versions of John Coltrane, Miles Davis. That helped me understand what jazz was, and how to interpret it. It was a subtle rebellion. No one is more aware of what people think about John Mayer than John Mayer himself. The title of his eighth studio album acknowledges past accusations of sad-boy mopery. The muted pastels of the throwback cover art, complete with a simulation of the “Nice Price” sticker that Columbia Records used to slap on its bargain LPs, dares you to call him a purveyor of slick, dated studio-rock.

Price told Rolling Stone that she was nervous at first about working with those studio aces. “But once they all started playing,” she says, “it was one of the best ideas ever.”

Los Angeles singer-songwriter Lawrence Rothman has teamed up with Lucinda Williams for a new song, “Decent Man.” The track will be featured on Rothman’s upcoming sophomore album, out January 29th, 2021, via Kro Records.
Over a video of giant decaying busts of the U.S. presidents, Rothman and Williams sing of a country in despair and ruin. “The New York Times says the country’s gone up for sale,” Rothman muses, while Williams observes on the chorus, “We’re just a lifeless empty Midwest mall, the aftermath of a hot head playing god.

The Who have dropped a new remix of “Beads on One String” from the upcoming deluxe edition of their 2019 album, Who, out October 30th.
Guitarist Pete Townshend crafted the remix — which was released under his Yaggerdang moniker — with the help of co-producer Myles Clarke. The remix was designed to hark back to Townshend’s original demo, using an old synth track crafted by co-writer Josh Hunsacker, swapping out the live drums for computer drums, and using an earlier vocal take from Roger Daltrey, which Townshend called “more heartfelt” in a statement.

What might emptiness sound like? That’s what Mike Hadreas, who records as Perfume Genius, sought out with producer Blake Mills on “Describe,” his latest single.
The song takes on a simple premise: the narrator is struggling in the midst of a tough episode, asking a loved one to help render the world for them. Much like the way Jeff Tweedy sought to sonically manifest his recurring migraines on Wilco’s A Ghost is Born, Perfume Genius manifests mental darkness on record, its sludge-rock low-end and languid tempo occupied by unfiltered chaos.

For a while, it looked like D'Angelo was going to become R&B's Axl Rose. The parallels are easy to spot: Both individuals are massively talented perfectionists whose personal struggles threatened to drown long-awaited follow-ups to early successes. In Rose's case, that would be Chinese Democracy, a Guns N' Roses album so delayed it became a running joke ("We'll have democracy in China before we have Chinese Democracy," for example), and for D'Angelo, it was the follow-up to 2000's Voodoo, which was eventually released in Dec. 2014 as Black Messiah. D‘Angelo is a morning person, of sorts. When he’s working in the studio, as was often the case in the 14-year interregnum between 2000’s Voodoo and 2014’s Black Messiah, he quits his all-night recording sessions just in time to greet each day’s sunrise. “I’m definitely on the night shift,” he says, drawing deep on one of a series of Newport cigarettes, not long after midnight in the midtown Manhattan studio where he recorded much of Black Messiah. It’s been a little over five years since the last release by Nine Inch Nails, but Hesitation Marks is well worth the wait. Now married, a father of two, and an Academy Award winning composer, Trent Reznor returns with not only a new album, but a new outlook on life. In between the release of 2008′s The Slip and now, Reznor found himself composing the score for David Fincher’s film The Social Network. During that time, he had announced that Nin was through touring and that he was stepping away from the music scene for a while. After scoring Tsn, he formed the band How To Destroy Angels with his wife Mariqueen Maandig, and collaborator Atticus Ross. The Htda project had Mariqueen at the forefront both on the album and via live shows and had a distinct sound that kept it separate from Nin.

Nine Inch Nails has revealed the track listing for “Hesitation Marks,” out Sept. 3. In addition to first single, “Came Back Haunted,” the rest of the titles hint at the sense of restless discontent (to put it mildly) the group is known for, including “The Eater of Dreams,” “Disappointed,” “All Time Low,” “Various Methods of Escape,” and “Black Noise.” Nine Inch Nails head Trent Reznor produced the album with his composing partner Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder. Among the guests are Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham, bassist Pino Palladino, and guitarist Adrian Belew, who dropped out of the band, according to Rolling...

R&B charmer D’Angelo is apparently ready to come out of hiding and is yet again attempting to record his much anticipated third album. The artist has been in a New York studio recording with some of his longtime collaborators: hip-hop’s hottest drummer and full-time stickman for The Roots, Questlove; producer/engineer Russell Elevado (Nikka Costa, Blackalicious); and bassist Pino Palladino, who also plucks away for John Mayer Trio among numerous other projects.
Through the power of Questlove’s Twitter account, we became aware of the sessions: “Most people use midnight as a time to sleep. Others are working on their 11 year followup. This of course being hour number one.”
Based on Quest’s comment, it appears that D’Angelo has scrapped any previously record material for the long gestating project, which he has supposedly been working on off and on for the past decade...

Every classic-rock fan knows the titanic twosome that fronts the Who: singer Roger Daltrey and windmilling guitarist Pete Townshend. But as the only two original members left of the iconic British rock band, the duo front a group of backup players who are decidedly more anonymous than late madman drummer Keith Moon and steady-on bassist John Entwistle, who died in 2002 on the eve of one of the band's seemingly endless final tours.
One of the sidemen that stood out for many football fans watching the Super Bowl halftime extravaganza on Sunday was splashy drummer Zak Starkey, who kept the beat on a medley of the band's most beloved hits: "Pinball Wizard," "Baba O'Riley," "Who Are You?," "See Me,...

The Who's upcoming tour is expected to garner the legendary band a cool $100 million, but getting Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey to travel and perform together is turning into a logistical night- mare.
One insider said, "There is a lot of tension and fighting going on right now. Roger is furious with Pete. Pete has been writing all this new material and wants to perform the new stuff, but Roger wants to stick with 'My Generation,' 'Won't Get Fooled Again,' 'Pinball Wizard' and other classics."
