The NCIS franchise returns with NCIS season 22 and the debut of NCIS: Origins in the fall of 2024, but the two shows' release schedules change slightly following their premieres. As its title suggests, NCIS: Origins serves as a prequel to the original military police procedural series, taking place in 1991, a little over a decade before the events of NCIS season 1. NCIS: Origins is the sixth installment and fifth official spinoff in the NCIS franchise, following in the footsteps of NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Hawai'i, and NCIS: Sydney. However, it's the first prequel.
While NCIS season 22's story revolves around the Naval Criminal Investigative Service in the present day, NCIS: Origins' plot follows Leroy Jethro Gibbs at the start of his career at the Naval Investigative Service (the precursor to NCIS). The two TV shows are quite different, but they both have qualities that should...

As NCIS: Origins explores the foundational years of Gibbs and the titular agency, showrunners David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal explain why the origin story will be a grittier affair than the main series. With Mark Harmon briefly returning to reprise the role of a now-retired Leroy Jethro Gibbs looking back on his career, Austin Stowell will take on the role of the younger Gibbs in 1991. Alongside the younger Gibbs, Kyle Schmid will take on the role of Mike Franks, Gibbs' mentor originally played by Muse Watson.
In an interview with TVLine, North and Monreal opened up about how the series promises to be a far different take on the world and characters. With the series having a darker tone and tale compared to its source material, they wanted to have a visual style that fits better with both the story and the setting.

In the wake of the original 1990 movie and the largely forgotten 2017 remake, the Flatliners saga will continue with Flatliners Resurrection, a new novel that’s currently in the works.
According to Deadline’s exclusive report this morning, the upcoming novel will be penned by J.D. Barker (Dracul), and it puts a fresh twist on the original Flatliners screenplay.
Deadline explains, “The original [movie] was released by Columbia, but Barker said that scribe Peter Filardi got back the rights to his original script, and the author swayed the scribe with a twist to the original tale that takes the reanimation tale down a different road than the original or a later remake. The novel is based on that script, not the movie, and Intellectual Property Group’s Joel Gotler will broker both the publishing and screen rights.”
“We’re thrilled to have J.D. Barker on board for this project,” said Filardi.

Fincher's 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' was the first of a trilogy that never took off due to box office disappointment. The 2011 film's critical success couldn't save it from being a financial letdown compared to Sony's expectations. Craig and Mara were recast in the 2018 follow-up, 'The Girl in The Spider's Web,' which failed to reboot the franchise.
David Fincher's celebrated 2011 film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was originally intended to be the first of a trilogy. Based on the Millennium book trilogy written by Stieg Larsson, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was Fincher's immediate follow-up to his Oscar-winning film The Social Network (2010) and also won the Academy Award for Best Achievement in Film Editing. It was released on December 21, 2011, and is currently streaming on Max.
Fincher is well known for his psychological thrillers such as Se7en, and Zodiac, and Gone Girl.

Director Niels Arden Oplev has written movingly of his intimate knowledge of the mental illness, but this story is soaked in treacly good taste
Danish film-maker Niels Arden Oplev, director of the original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo with Noomi Rapace, has written movingly about the true story behind his very personal new film. It is inspired by his sister who has schizophrenia, perhaps triggered by heartbreak she experienced in her personal life as a teenager working in her gap year in France, but who in middle age went on a cathartic healing journey back to that country with her sister and brother-in-law.

The subtitled Danish dramedy Rose features an award-worthy performance from its star, elevating what could have been treacly melodrama. It’s often said that leading roles with some sort of disability provide Oscar bait. But that doesn’t always work out as well as it does here. For example, the Campbell Scott vehicle Dying Young still annoys me whenever I think about it, even though it’s been over 30 years since I sat through the thing.
Sofie Grabol stars as Inger, a schizophrenic woman living with, and closely monitored by, her parents. We learn that her condition was one of adult onset, with progressive insights into possible causative factors from her backstory. But when her sister Ellen...

Rose is a thought-provoking depiction of mental illness, specifically schizophrenia, and challenges the common misrepresentation of the condition in cinema. Sofie Gråbøl delivers a powerful performance as Inger, authentically portraying the complexities of schizophrenia with both comic flippancy and profound depth. The film showcases the impact of schizophrenia on the protagonist's life, alternating between empowering moments and harrowing experiences, while also highlighting society's demeaning and condescending treatment of those with the condition.
What initially appears to be a considerably more dramatic Danish version of the British reality show Coach Trip quickly becomes something far more poignant. Niels Arden Oplev's Scandinavian drama, Rose, is a thought-provoking and integrative depiction of mental illness. In an increasingly enlightened and progressive society that does more than just lend a sympathetic ear to those with mental health issues, whether the film industry will reciprocate this progression remains to be seen. A warm-hearted, often comedic drama which centres on a coach trip to Paris, Niels Arden Oplev’s latest film, Rose, is his most deeply personal work to date. it’s based on incidents in the lives of his two older sisters: Maren Elisabeth, who is schizophrenic, and Kirsten, who has been her lifelong carer. There’s much more to the two of them than that, of course, and it’s that which makes the film so unusual. We are all used to negative depictions of mental illness in cinema. Here it’s just one aspect of life – a challenging one, but one that doesn’t overwhelm the richness of their other experiences or the importance of their bond.

Elliot Page writes in his new memoir, “Pageboy,” that filming the 2017 “Flatliners” remake was “a true mess from the very beginning” and a “shit show” due to unsafe stunt work and instances of racism and queerphobia on set (via Entertainment Weekly). Or, as Page puts it: “It went off the rails.”
In an entire chapter devoted to the making of the Niels Arden Oplev-directed thriller, Page alleges he and co-star Kiersey Clemons were put in unsafe working conditions during one stunt scene.
“We were getting ready for a car stunt when Kiersey and I realized that everyone had a built-in thick seat belt, except for us,” Page writes. “No restraints, a basic safety measure of the carefully orchestrated, expensive and elaborate stunt that hadn’t been thought through… We looked to the various stunt crew members strapping the others in, perplexed, questioning why we weren’t being secured for the scene.

In a chapter solely devoted to the production, Page alleged that Flatliners was "a true mess from the very beginning," describing a set full of dangerous stunts, discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community and misogyny. This article is presented by Netflix:
The real Leif Eriksson lived around 1000 Ce, about 200 years before the two medieval Icelandic stories known as The Vínland Sagas were written down, which is why there are different versions of his tale. The Saga of Erik the Red credits Leif with the discovery of America while on an expedition to convert the Greenlanders to Christianity. The Saga of the Greenlanders has someone else actually first sight America (Bjarni Herjólfsson) but didn’t land. It was Eriksson who landed and named it “Wineland” (Vínland) because he found lots of vines there.
While preparing for and filming the first season of Vikings: Valhalla, actor Sam Corlett found himself on a road of self-discovery at the same time his character was gradually getting a sense of his own destiny. A 2018 graduate from the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts (Waapa), he co-starred in Eric Bana...

The family of a photojournalist held in Syria must raise a multimillion-dollar ransom after the Danish government refuses to negotiate
Over the last couple of decades, Danish cinema has increasingly proved to have a strong aptitude for emotive, nuanced drama and intelligent engagement, particularly through documentary-making, with conflicts abroad. This inspired-by-a-true-story feature, from journeyman director Niels Arden Oplev (who helmed the original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo film) skilfully combines those two strands to tell the story of Daniel Rye, a young Danish photographer who was captured by Isis in Syria in 2013.
Filmed in a wiggly, handheld fashion – such a signature of the Dogma 95 years it almost feels like a retro affectation – the plot tracks methodically through Daniel’s story, holding tight on the expressive face of Esben Smed, who rises to the physical challenges of the role. For starters, he has to convincingly pass as Rye when he was...

I am a sucker for a true story and I am even bigger sucker for true stories I know of – ones I can remember seeing on the news or talking about with my friends. The Bin Laden compound raid was something you couldn’t miss, so when Zero Dark Thirty came out it was an absolute must. There has been no shortage of movies about the numerous conflicts across the years and while not all of them stick the landing, they tend to be compelling viewing if only to satisfy our morbid curiosity for an hour or two.
Daniel is a movie that definitely got my interest for a number of reasons. Firstly we have Toby Kebbell, an actor I’m fascinated by; next was the mention he was playing James Foley and...

The Danish writer-director’s new feature is set in 1997 and follows a group of tourists travelling by bus from the northern provincial part of Denmark to Paris. Denmark’s Niels Arden Oplev is now working on his next feature, entitled Rose. The Oue-born director’s new endeavour follows in the wake of Daniel, a drama recalling the experiences of Daniel Rye, who was held hostage by Isis terrorists for 13 months and released last year. The shooting of Rose has started on the mainland of Jutland and will later include a short detour to Paris. The script, penned by the helmer himself and described as “a film about caring for each other despite our differences”, is set over the course of a week in the autumn of 1997 and follows a group of tourists travelling by bus from the northern provincial part of Denmark to the city of cities, Paris. In 2013, Daniel Rye, a Danish photographer in his mid-twenties, went to Syria to document the plight of civilian refugees and was kidnapped by Isis. Ransomed and held captive for 13 months, Rye was psychologically and physically tortured, starved and beaten by his captors, first on his own and then alongside several other international hostages, among them U.S. journalist James Foley.
This is the inherently dramatic true story told in Puk Damsgaard Andersen’s book “The Isis Hostage,” but it takes intelligence and paradoxical restraint from directors Niels Arden Oplev (Sweden’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”) and Anders W. Berthelsen, as well as a superb, exceptionally physical lead performance from Esben Smed, to adapt it into “Daniel,” . Partly, the balance between gritty, true-life fidelity and pacy, exciting storytelling is achieved because in Rye, to whom Eric Kress’ warm, compassionate camera clings so doggedly, we have such a sympathetic, human protagonist.

GÖTEBORG, Sweden — Home to the most dynamic streaming markets in Western Europe, the Nordic region still posted solid box office returns in 2019, especially from Hollywood tentpoles “The Lion King,” “Avengers: Endgame” and “Joker,” which ruled on all top ten charts, except in Denmark. Local fare, however, lost ground in all five territories.
Denmark
Denmark enjoyed another strong cinemagoing year in 2019, with overall revenues up 4% to Nok 1.18 billion ($175.1 million). After a record 2018, when Danish films punched a 30% market share, home-grown titles still retained 26% of the market – above the 25% average of the last decade, according to the Danish Distributors’ Assn., Fafid.
Boosted by the local animated sensation “Checkered Ninja,” total admissions for local fare reached 3.5 million. Created by comedian-turned director Anders Matthesen, a late 2018 kid’s movie release, sailed to the top of the 2019 Danish box office, earning $8.2 million and accounting for 17.7% of all tickets sold for Danish pics. Three other Danish...

Mads Mikkelsen is set to headline the dark comedy “Riders of Justice” written and directed by Anders Thomas Jensen, the well-known Danish helmer and screenwriter of Susanne Bier’s Oscar-winning “In a Better World.”
Mikkelsen will star in the film alongside Nikolaj Lie Kaas (“The Department Q Series”), Lars Brygmann (“That Time of the Year), Nicolas Bro (“Nymphomaniac”), Gustav Lindh (“Queen of Hearts”), Roland Møller (“Valhalla”) and the newcomer Andrea Heick Gadeberg (“Daniel”).
The story revolves Markus, a deployed military man who has to go home to his teenage daughter, Mathilde, when his wife dies in a tragic train accident. It seems to be plain bad luck – but it turns out that it might have been a carefully orchestrated assassination, which his wife ended up being a random casualty of.
