“There it is,” says Computer Conor, finding the advert for his modest computer-art service in the latest issue of Personal Computing while his dog, Sandy, snuffles on the sofa. Though the aesthetic of Obex — Albert Birney’s follow-up to the pastel-hued Strawberry Mansion (2021) — is grainy ’70s Eraserhead monochrome, appearances can be deceiving. The year is 1987, with Reagan in the White House and Madonna in the charts, but Conor (played by Birney himself) is unaware. A virtual shut-in, he sees life through a screen, even sending his neighbor Mary to do his grocery shopping.
Flipping through the magazine, an advert for a new computer game catches his eye; illustrated with a gothic castle, a satanic goat’s head and human brain, it promises a breakthrough in interactive gaming: “Can you make it to the end of the maze and defeat the demon Ixaroth before he eats your mortal soul?” To take part,...

The dream team of David Bowie and Coldplay was clearly just not meant to be. Bowie is no stranger to collaborations, nor has he been afraid to join forces with superstar musicians. Quite willing to public hate his own songs, the Thin White Duke also cultivated a reputation for openly criticizing other musicians, no matter what their profile or track record.
Elton John and the once Ziggie Stardust had started out as friends, but their closeness eroded in the 1970s when Bowie referred to John as “The token queen of rock and roll” in an interview. He also had choice words for Paul McCartney, and Gary Numan, and infamously came to blows with Axl Rose (at least according to Slash's autobiography). And that openness with his criticism translated to an unwillingness to collaborate with some of rock's most prominent figures.

There’s no mistaking Echo Mars for anything but a rock star. It’s in the way they carry themselves through the world, with a quick, confident step and a starchild aura that evokes Bolan, Bowie, and multiple characters from the 1998 film Velvet Goldmine. It’s in their ink — Drama scrawled on their neck in stick-and-poke capitals, spiderwebs and jesters snaking down their arms, Bitch jumping out across their chest when they rip their shirt off onstage. Most of all, it’s in their voice, leaping from a throaty growl...

Scant months after Q-Tip publicly debated the dubiousness of an “adult-contemporary hip-hop” category on social media comes a completely Tip-produced new album by his Queens neighbor LL Cool J — the 56-year-old rapper-actor’s 14th since his 1984 debut as a teenager. In a year when both Rakim and Masta Ace released new projects, when Common teamed with producer Pete Rock for a stellar throwback album of Nineties-spirited hip-hop, LL’s new effort joins a trend. “Call it traditional hip-hop,” Q-Tip tweeted.

Plot: A young man (Bill Skarsgard) returns from the dead to avenge his girlfriend’s murder.
Review: Rupert Sanders’s The Crow is one of the more controversial would-be big-budget blockbusters (they hope) in some time. The rights holders to the property have spent over a decade trying to relaunch James O’Barr’s classic antihero. While there was initially some enthusiasm from fans when It star Bill Skarsgard was cast in the lead, they didn’t care for the character’s look when it was revealed, and many dismissed the trailer as Crow-Wick and a stain on the memory of the original Brandon Lee classic.
But, here’s the thing – outside of the first movie by Alex Proyas, there’s never been another good Crow movie. In fact, there have been some genuinely abysmal ones, so it’s strange fans have all of a sudden gotten so precious about a...

The Crow 2024's soundtrack sets a gothic mood with new songs, including FKA twigs and opera pieces. Notable songs like "Burn" and "Dead Souls" from the original movie are excluded for a fresh take. Each song in The Crow 2024 can be found online individually, but the full soundtrack is not yet released.
2024's The Crow soundtrack is filled with music and songs to help set the gothic mood of the comic book reimagining. With Bill Skarsgrd in the lead role as Eric Draven, The Crow's cast hinted at how music could be an integral part of the new adaptation. Singer FKA twigs is featured as the female lead of the movie, playing Eric's love interest, Shelly. Alex Proyas’ 1994 film The Crow owes its enduring cult bona fides partly to high-style visuals rooted in peak-era MTV, a churning alt-metal soundtrack and way cool goth-chic fashion sense. But the larger factor behind the sleek thriller’s cultural imprint was the tragic accident during filming that took the life of promising star Brandon Lee at 28, echoing the death at a similarly young age of his father, martial arts legend Bruce Lee. Director Rupert Sanders attempts to slip out from under the original’s shadow by avoiding the word “remake” and calling this a modern reimagining of the source material. That doesn’t make it any less turgid.
Drowning in brooding atmosphere, rain-slicked nightscapes and goopy eyeliner, and tossing in some retro flavor with tracks by Joy Division, Gary Numan and others, the new iteration of The Crow is more focused on aesthetics than storytelling. So it makes sense that...

Though opinions will obviously vary based on musical taste, the soundtrack for Alex Proyas' original adaptation of The Crow is widely regarded as one of the best of all time, topping the Billboard 200 and eventually going platinum.
Now, AVClub.com has unveiled the official track list for Lionsgate's remake, and it's... actually pretty good!
The music used for the trailer did not inspire confidence, but this soundtrack includes a few certified bangers which perfectly encapsulate the goth/industrial aesthetic associated with the '90s film. Whether this movie manages to live up to that standard remains to be seen!
Here’s the complete track list for The Crow soundtrack:
“Des Pas Sur La Neige” - Debussy
“Disorder” – Joy Division
“Fall” – The Bug Ft. Inga Copeland
“Thin Flesh” – Traitrs
“The Killer” – Landr
“M.E.” – Gary Numan
“Total Depravity” – The Veils
“Boadicea” – Enya
“Meaning” – Cascadeur
“What Went Down” – Foals

Music has always been one of, if not the most, important parts of The Crow franchise. Dating back to James O’Barr’s original comic, the artist included lyrics by Joy Division and Robyn Hitchcock to help evoke the gothic moodiness of Eric Draven. That comic even has a soundtrack album: Fears & Bullets.

Ministry Kick Off 2024 Tour in San Francisco with Gary Numan and Front Line Assembly: Photos + Video

Ministry kicked off their 2024 North American tour with Gary Numan and Front Line Assembly at the historic Warfield Theater in San Francisco on Tuesday evening (February 27th), just three days before the release of their 16th studio album, Hopiumforthemasses. As it had been a few months since Ministry were on the road, they were definitely refreshed and re-energized, delivering a set of both new and classic songs to a near sold-out venue.
Ministry wasted no time playing the new stuff, as they kicked off their set with five songs from Hopiumforthemasses, beginning with the singles “B.D.E.” (Big Dick Energy) and “Just Stop Oil.” Frontman and ring leader Al Jourgensen was his usual frantic self, belting out the lyrics while engaging with the fans up against the barricade. After a blistering version of “Goddam White Trash,” he and the band were joined by Jello Biafra for “Aryan Embarrassment” (a...

Ministry have unleashed the latest song from their upcoming album, Hopiumforthemasses. The new track, titled “B.D.E.” (aka “Big Dick Energy”), takes aim at toxic misogyny and violence against women.
“The incel subsect and general misogynistic tendencies in our society are dangerous yet seem to fly under the radar so we figured it’s time to shine a light on it,” stated Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen of the track. “In true Ministry fashion, we battle it with sarcasm.”
Hopiumforthemasses, which arrives on March 1st, recently made our list of the 30 Most Anticipated Metal & Hard Rock Albums of 2024. The LP’s previous single, “Just Stop Oil,” came in at No. 7 on our list of the 30 Best Metal & Hard Rock Songs of 2023.

Ministry have unveiled the track “Just Stop Oil” as the latest single from their upcoming album, Hopiumforthemasses, which is set for release on March 1st.
The new song follows the album’s first single, “Goddamn White Trash,” which arrived in August along with the announcement of the new LP. As is evident in the title, “Just Stop Oil” is political in tone, with Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen stating, “Ministry approves this message and the movement behind it. Enough is Enough!”
While “Just Stop Oil” doesn’t feature any guests, other tracks on the album boast appearances by Pepper Keenan, Eugene Hutz (Gogol Bordello), and Jello Biafra.
Ministry will support the album with a previously announced headlining 2024 North American tour featuring support from Gary Numan and Front Line Assembly. The outing kicks off in late February, with tickets available here.

In 1980, Canada delivered one of the most mind boggling slasher films of all time. Terror Train, directed by Roger Spottiswoode, threw Halloween, Friday the 13th, Animal House, Runaway Train and stage magic into a body bag, shook it up and dumped out a glorious Frankenstein monstrosity featuring Jamie Lee Curtis and David Copperfield. Forty-two years later, this classic oddity gets a modern yet mostly faithful retelling courtesy director Philippe Gagnon.
The premise is exactly the same: a well-to-do fraternity holds a Halloween bash on a privately chartered train only to have their numbers picked off one-by-one. There’s a mysterious magician, played by Tom Rozon in the finest Gary Numan impersonation ever, and an angry killer bent on revenge for the misdeeds of said fraternity. Costumes exchange and body counts rise as both guests and train employees realize someone is out to get them. The main difference is a twist...

‘Choose or Die’ Review: A Video Game Kills Without Rhyme or Reason in This Disposable Netflix Horror

Even the smallest feature-length film is a considerable logistical enterprise, so it’s a bit flummoxing how little thought appears to have been put into “Choose or Die.” While there have been worse-crafted, even more routinely formulaic Netflix horror efforts, this one takes the cake for sheer whateverness of barely-there plot, concept, character detailing and so on. If some movies now seem designed to be consumed on phones, this one demands so little attention, for such scant rewards, you could probably watch it while vacuuming or doing yoga without missing anything important.
Not that first-time feature director Toby Meakins or his cast do slipshod work. But their labors are expended on a “viral” curse premise so indifferently defined and developed, the result recalls the archaic term “quota quickie,” which referred to low-budget 1930s British films made by Parliamentary decree just to keep the industry chugging. “Choose or Die” may substitute supernatural deaths for music-hall songs,...

Gary Numan warns of devastating climate change and the hypocrisy of religion in the new video for “Saints and Liars,” the latest single from the new wave pioneer’s upcoming album Intruder.
“‘Saints and Liars’ is the earth drawing attention to our blind faith in religion, in a fictitious God, who in reality does nothing for us, while at the same time abusing and destroying the planet, which does everything for us,” Numan said of the track in a statement.

Gary Numan has released a new song, “Intruder,” the title track from his upcoming album, out May 21st.
The song boasts an ominous industrial stomp, although there’s an eerily serene edge to the vocal melodies as Numan shows his continued knack for pop craftsmanship. The accompanying video, directed by Chris Corner, finds Numan delivering a dramatic performance of “Intruder” in a setting where futuristic tech seems to collide with the natural world.

New Wave great Gary Numan will release his 18th studio album, Intruder, May 21st.
The record will be a companion piece to Numan’s 2017’s album Savage: Songs From a Broken World. That LP was a concept record set in a post-apocalyptic world that’s been transformed into a desert by global warming.
“Intruder looks at climate change from the planet’s point of view,” Numan said (per Exclaim). “If Earth could speak, and feel things the way we do, what would it say? How would it feel? The songs,...

Happy birthday to Linda Ronstadt’s New Wave album Mad Love, released 40 years ago, in March 1980. It’s the weirdest oddity in her catalog, with three Elvis Costello covers. Mad Love is forgotten by time, written out of her official history. Not even Linda has a kind word for this album. In the acclaimed 2019 documentary, Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice — which treats every one of her career moves as a stroke of brilliance — Mad Love doesn’t get mentioned much. But for some of us, it’s one...

When audio engineer Peggy McCreary was recording Prince for his 1999 album, she didn’t immediately recognize his genius. “I had no idea who he was when I first started working with him,” she recalls. She had met him around the time he made his third LP, Controversy, and unlike Prince, who was in his early twenties, she had a string of hit albums in her list of credits, including Van Halen’s debut and Elton John’s 21 at 23. She watched Prince jump from instrument to instrument, recording and mixing songs...

She spent her career being chased by vampires, 007 and David Hasselhoff. And she also found time to sing with Cream and Gary Numan. Was it all as much fun as it looked?
One day, 50 years ago, a solicitor walking to work through Waterloo station in London noticed a 30ft-tall woman. She was dressed in an unzipped scuba top and was brandishing a knife drawn from a scabbard strapped to her bare thigh. It was his daughter. “Dad knew I was going to be the Lamb’s Navy Rum girl, but not that I would be on a billboard,” says Caroline Munro. “He said it was a bit of a shock.”
Over the next decade, Munro’s parents got used to seeing their daughter writ large and wearing smalls. There she was on the cover of the Music for Pleasure Hot Hits 11 album, practising archery in a bikini and knee-high suede boots.

It’s fair to say that director Gaspar Noé polarizes opinion. It’s a fact that he seems to revel in and play upon, and the distributors of his films implement this polarity into their press and marketing strategies. "You despised I Stand Alone, you hated Irreversible, you loathed Enter The Void, you cursed Love. Now try Climax."1 A superb and audacious technical craftsman whose work is able to authentically replicate the sensation of losing control, there was the sense that with Love (2015) the director had exhausted the patience of even his most ardent supporters. Noé’s work, with its interest in sex, drugs, violence and hedonism thrives on the ability to shock, and with his first three features he achieved a thrilling if uncomfortable talent for taking the viewer on a long, slow but strangely bracing descent to hellish depths. The sexually explicit Love however singularly failed on every level.

Beck recruited Jenny Lewis on Tuesday for an expertly timed live cover of Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon.” The concert at the idyllic Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, Colorado happened to mark the real-life Harvest Moon, the full moon occurring closest to the autumnal equinox, as Brooklyn Vegan notes.
The two singers offered a low-key, slightly ramshackle take on Young’s 1992 track, alternating between unison and harmony over strummed acoustic guitar and a melancholy mandolin melody.

Radiohead’s summer U.S. tour seems designed to prove a few self-evident truths. For one thing, In Rainbows remains their hands-down best album, though all votes for Kid A will be counted and “There There” is their peak song. For another thing: They’ve remembered how much fun it is to be the World’s Greatest Rock Band, to the point where their live show is a mad career-capping rush of exuberant energy. Their four-night run at New York’s Madison Square Garden last week was one for the ages.

If there’s one defining quality of the cinema of Gaspar Noé, aside from shots of ejaculating penises in 3D, it’s definitely impatience. His new film, “Climax” even begins impatiently, interrupting its Arte logo with a staticky video smash cut (the “record needle scratch” of Noé’s aesthetic) into its opening scene. This striking high overhead of a bleeding girl screaming and dragging herself through a pristine snowscape, will not be the last time “Climax” will deal so directly in slasher-movie imagery, a reference helped along by the clever use of Gary Numan‘s synthy-slick arrangement of Eric Satie‘s “Trois Gymnopedies.”
