In 2020, rave reviews flowed in from the Sundance Film Festival for Natalie Erika James' directorial debut Relic. Rather than shock value, it achieves something far more challenging: frightening viewers while moving them to tears. The film portrays a life experience many families face: watching a loved one succumb to dementia, and it sadly hits home for many. Actor Emily Mortimer told the Los Angeles Times after reading the script, “I just felt, 'Oh, this is really audacious and wonderful.' I mean, I don’t think there’s anything more horrifying in life than watching someone you love die."
The film affects viewers on multiple levels, leaving them disturbed by its imagery and devastated by its distressing truth. James looked to personal experiences to create Relic, drawing on her grandmother's battle with Alzheimer's disease. Through its three central female characters spanning three generations, this truly terrifying tearjerker from 2020 demonstrates how...

A seemingly less discussed sub-genre in cinema these days is the monster movie. It's a type of film that was made quite often in the horror genre during the classical Hollywood era and even in the decades following. However, it's not common to see a conventional monster movie on the big screen quite as often these days. That's probably why it's so refreshing to see a film like Sting from earlier this year.
Despite being a less popular genre in general, the 21st century has produced recent hits like A Quiet Place and cult classics like Van Helsing. This century already has lots of entertaining monster movies worth watching.

Sasquatch Sunset directors Nathan and David Zellner always wondered what these hairy giants do when they’re not walking – the only Bigfoot footage available has been a minute of a supposed Sasquatch wandering in the northern California woods. They decided to flesh that out in unique dialogue-free comedic imagining of the creatures’ daily life – eating, fighting, etc. Stars Jesse Eisenberg, Riley Keough, Christophe Zajac-Denek and Nathan Zellner are unrecognizable as the hairy tribe of four that entranced Sundance (see Deadline review). Bleecker Street is opening the film, written by David Zellner, executive produced by Ari Aster, in 9 theaters in New York, LA, San Francisco and Austin, ahead of a big jump to about 800 screens next week.

Writer/Director Kiah Roache-Turner wears his influences on his sleeves in the throwback creature feature Sting. A mysterious object from outer space crashes into a New York apartment amidst a raging blizzard, where the mysterious spider inside it is discovered by a girl named Charlotte. Charlotte dubs her new pet Sting, unaware that it’s not from Earth and comes with an insatiable appetite for human flesh. As the spider’s reign of terror increases, so does Roache-Turner’s commitment to capturing the mayhem through stunning practical creature effects, which makes this film worth the price of admission.
It’s not just the spider’s pet name, derived from The Hobbit, or the effects by the 5-time Academy Award® Winner Wētā Workshop, led by Creative Director Richard Taylor, that calls the work of Peter Jackson to mind here. It’s also the film’s sense of humor, from the opening...

In “Sting,” a giant-spider-grows-in-Brooklyn thriller that’s cheeky, bloody, and (most important) very gooey, Sting is the name given by Charlotte (Alyla Browne), a precocious tween, to the elegant two-inch-long black spider that becomes her pet (she keeps it in a jar and feeds it bugs). Yet given how much slaughter is caused by this omnivorous arachnid, which grows bigger and bigger with each feeding, the moniker turns out to be a major understatement. It’s as if Jason Vorhees were named “Paper Cut.”
“Sting” is a wee sliver of a horror film that’s tongue-in-cheek but also quite matter-of-fact about its creature-feature jokiness. It’s the monster-bug thriller as light dessert. The spider, it turns out, is an alien — after a gruesome prologue with lots of whooshing “Evil Dead” camera movement, the movie cuts to four days earlier, when a fiery meteorite crashes through an apartment roof in South...

A scene from ‘Sting’ (Photo Courtesy of Well Go USA Entertainment)
From Arachnophobia to Itsy Bitsy, from Tarantula to Abyssal Spider, killer spider movies have always been in style. But there’s something special about the newest eight-legged offering, Sting. Sting is everything that’s amazing about creature features.
Sting is about a young girl named Charlotte (Alyla Browne from the unfortunate Children of the Corn remake) who spends her time drawing comics and creeping into her neighbors’ apartments by crawling through the apartment building’s air ducts. One day while doing the latter, she comes across a cute little spider which she takes home and names Sting – not after the rock star or the wrestler, but after the short sword in The Hobbit. Yes, Charlotte is a dork.
But Sting isn’t a normal, run-of-the-mill spider. It’s an alien spider that crashed on Earth in a meteorite. First,...

Plot: A 12-year-old girl decides to keep a spider as a pet, not aware that the eight-legged creature is not of this world. The more it eats, the more it grows, and soon a giant space arachnid is running loose in an apartment building, snacking on the residents.
Review: Filmmaker Kiah Roache-Turner is best known for his wild and crazy zombie movies Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead and Wyrmwood: Apocalypse, which blended inspiration from Mad Max and Dawn of the Dead to tell the story of a unique zombie outbreak where the living dead have flammable blood and exhale methane. "What kind of spider are we talking about here?" "A big one." Well Go USA has revealed an official trailer for an insanely scary, unsettling horror movie called Sting, arriving in theaters this April. This Australian production comes from a filmmaker named Kiah Roache-Turner, and it looks as scary as any spider movie can. Sting spins a web of thrilling terror when 12-year-old Charlotte’s pet spider rapidly transforms into a giant flesh-eating monster, forcing the young girl to fight for her family's survival. The freaky little creature actually comes from outer space, an alien spider that befriends this little girl before it becomes an enormous killer. This stars Alyla Browne, Ryan Corr, Penelope Mitchell, Jermaine Fowler, Silvia Colloca, Danny Kim, Noni Hazlehurst, and Robyn Nevin. This isn't the only extremely scary spider movie this year - there's also a French horror called Vermin that apparently used real spiders while shooting.

The trailer for the horror comedy film Sting, featuring a girl named Charlotte and a spider named Sting, has been released. Sting grows in size along with Charlotte's fascination, leading to a hunger for larger prey and putting Charlotte's family and the building in danger. Sting utilizes practical effects from Oscar-winning Weta Workshop, and the film will be released in theaters on April 12, 2024, with distribution handled by Well Go USA.
The first trailer for Sting, an upcoming horror comedy involving spiders, has been released. The film concerns a little girl named Charlotte, whose name choice is likely an E. B. Her isolation persists despite Charlotte's father's attempts to bond with her through their comic co-creation, Fang Girl.

As you might imagine, however, Sting is not just about any family pet, as the official synopsis reveals: "Sting spins a web of thrilling terror when 12-year-old Charlotte's pet spider rapidly transforms into a giant flesh-eating monster, forcing the young girl to fight for her family's survival." Ryan Corr, Alyla Browne, Penelope Mitchell, Robyn Nevin, Noni Hazelhurst, Silvia Colloca, Danny Kim, and Jermaine Fowler star. Well Go USA Entertainment will be bringing this tale of domestic horror to North American theaters on April 12....

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a universal language for loss? Imagine if in all the letting go, in all the unlearning of what was, there was something to grasp—not only a pattern to comprehend, but a way to understand each other while everything else dissolves? Oh, if we could learn the language. Maybe we’d catch how pain serrates our words before it cuts others. Maybe we too could experience the cathartic and collective wail Midsommar’s Dani felt, that bittersweet mixture of feeling our darkest of feelings without shame and in loving, nurturing hands. If loss had a language, it’d have countless dialects for innumerable sorrows.
Even after a decade of living it, I still don’t know how to talk about losing my father to dementia. Just when I think I’ve lost all I could, I discover something new to let go of: memory,...

In Relic, now playing in Mexican theaters thanks to Tulip Pictures, Kay (Emily Mortimer) and her daughter Sam (Bella Heathcote) travel from Melbourne to Creswick, Australia, after being notified by the police of the disappearance of Edna (Robyn Nevin), the family's grandmother. Inside the house, located in a remote wooded area, Kay and Sam find rotten fruit, post-it notes with directions (“take pills”), and no trace of where grandma might be. Clearly the family hasn’t communicated recently, although Kay knew of her mother's mental decline. She even remembers how Edna called her scared because she believed someone was breaking into her house. Director Natalie Erika James, of Australian and Japanese descent, uses a classic horror setting – the haunted house – to develop a highly...

In the Australian horror film Relic (IFC Films), a befuddled elderly woman starts attacking her family while her body crumbles before our eyes. Her bones snap and gouge her skin. Her flesh rots and grays, peeling off in oozing flaps. When she can no longer walk, she scuttles on her hands and knees in pursuit. She hunts her daughter (Emily Mortimer) and granddaughter (Bella Heathcote) through their pitch-dark house, unable to recognize them as she chokes and maims them. “It’s not her anymore,” the daughter whispers. Edna (Robyn Nevin) has become a monster.

I’m not big on lists. But in the past couple of years, whenever I found myself having to write a listicle, they always had women as the subject. During a time when most writers are making their recaps of their top 10 films of the year, I thought, “Why not do something different?” So, this year, my list is an ode to my favorite female performances of the year. I tried to stay away from the obvious and give shoutouts to performances you may have forgotten or ones that will fall to the wayside come awards season. Most of the films below are accessible through VOD and streaming, but two are still seeking distribution. I hope to not only get these women more recognition for their craft, but also the films themselves, especially if they have fallen under the radar.

A matriarch’s failing mind brings darkness to the family home in Natalie Erika James’s unforgettably chilling debut feature
Responses to cinema are, by nature, highly personal, with the very best movies tapping into wellsprings of emotion already deeply embedded in the viewer’s psyche. This may go some way toward explaining why Relic, the extraordinary debut feature from writer-director Natalie Erika James, left me a total wreck – overwhelmed and in floods of tears. Yet I’d wager that this spine-tingling, heartbreaking tale of a woman with Alzheimer’s becoming lost in the labyrinthine corridors of her mind, and her home, has a universal power that will resonate with anyone, regardless of personal experience.
Emily Mortimer is Kay, the somewhat distanced daughter of Edna (Robyn Nevin), an elderly widow who lives alone in a remote house in Victoria, Australia. Local police check in on Edna regularly but – to her...

All the major releases of 2020 have been postponed or released via streaming and cinemas are holding on by their fingertips, it hasn’t exactly been a stellar year for film. But as is so often the cast, one genre is holding on strong – horror. One of the very best horror movies of the year is Relic, a highly emotional, deeply creepy story of a woman with dementia and the daughter and granddaughter who come to care for her in her dilapidated old home. It’s a haunted house story of sorts where at times it’s the house itself that is doing the haunting.
Japanese-Australian director Natalie Erika James says she was a total scaredy cat as a child but her experience of watching a horror movie on the big screen with friends – which she describes as “The closest that you can get to death without dying” – gave her a...

Relic is a brilliantly creative, and intelligent horror flick that played at this year’s London Film Festival, and to mark its theatrical release, we had the pleasure of speaking to its leading star, Bella Heathcote.
The Australian actress, talking to us from the other side of the world via Zoom, talks about the film’s layers, and how it takes a real life illness, in this case dementia, and uses that as a catalyst to explore the familiar tropes and beats of the horror genre. She also talks about learning from her experienced colleagues, in this instance the brilliant Emily Mortimer and Robyn Nevin. She also sings the praises of the film’s director Natalie Erika James, and we talk about her experience in lockdown, as she leaves behind the US to spend some time back home, though sounds like she is itching to get back to work…

As psychological horror debuts go, writer-director Natalie Erika James’ Relic is an impressive first entry. It does follow many of the standard horror tropes of the creepy haunted house, but it is also set apart in this genre by its visually rich analogy to the disturbing effects of dementia.
Daughter Kay (Emily Mortimer) and her daughter Sam (Bella Heathcote) return to the remote family home after Kay’s mother and Sam’s elderly grandmother Edna (Robyn Nevin) mysteriously goes missing. As her mother’s mental health deteriorates, Kay and daughter Sam find themselves battling something sinister within the four walls that may go to explain Edna’s state and other strange occurrences.

Every once in a while, someone likes to declare that the horror genre is dead, and so far, every one of those predictions has been wrong.
Horror movies have been around almost as long as filmmaking itself, and while the genre has always been cyclical in nature –dipping, sometimes drastically, in both quality and quantity from time to time — all it usually takes is a well-timed box office hit, a fresh new angle or a hot young filmmaker to reanimate it again.
The 21st century has been, overall, an extremely healthy one for horror. There’s been the usual amount of dross, of course, but the genre has branched out in a number of interesting new directions as well. We had absolutely no problem tallying the initial batch of movies for this article, and have just continued to update it ever since, starting with the newest and going back in time from there.

Often the scariest things and the darkest spirits live within our own house, closer than we think. Japanese Australian female director Natalie Erika James co-wrote the script of her debut feature “Relic” with Christian White, embracing the horror genre to talk about mortality and slipping away love. “Relic” is a new addition to what has been defined a Female Horror Renaissance and was premiered at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in January 2020.
“Relic” is screening at the BFI London Film Festival

Samantha Strauss.
Following on from their collaboration on Foxtel/Sky UK’s The End, writer and producer Samantha Strauss and See-Saw Films have formed a joint venture in production company Picking Scabs.
The partnership will develop projects for Strauss to write and produce in both Australia and overseas, with Strauss to work closely with See-Saw producer and EP Rachel Gardner on the slate.
“We want to tell stories that are a bit itchy and a lot addictive; that dig below the scab and broken skin and investigate all sorts of wounds that haven’t healed properly,” said Strauss.
“Let them bleed, weep and breathe. The opportunity to tell more of these stories, with the brilliantly supportive and talented See-Saw family, fills my writer heart with glee.”
Gardner said: “Samantha is a rare talent, one that is able to marry her immense artistic gifts with a keen understanding of the business,...

The End, the British/Australian dark comedy drama starring The Crown and Succession star Harriet Walter and Mansfield Park’s Frances O’Connor, is heading to Showtime.
The ViacomCBS-owned network has acquired the 10-episode first season of the drama, which is produced by Top of the Lake producer See-Saw Films and was a co-production between Sky and Australia’s Foxtel. Endeavor Content handled the U.S. deal.
O’Connor plays Dr Kate Brennan, an Australian-based specialist in palliative care. Euthanasia is a hot-button topic in Kate’s field of work and she is passionate in her opposition. On the other side of the world, Kate’s mother Edie Henley, played by Walter, feels just as strongly about her right to die. Kate has little choice but to ship Edie out from England and deposit her in a nearby retirement village in the Gold Coast – Edie’s worst nightmare. While Kate struggles with her own problems,...

Signature Entertainment has debuted a new trailer for the psychological horror ‘Relic’ starring Emily Mortimer
When elderly mother Edna, inexplicably vanishes, her daughter Kay and granddaughter Sam rush to their family’s decaying country home, finding clues of her increasing dementia scattered around the house in her absence. After Edna returns just as mysteriously as she disappeared, Kay’s concern that her mother seems unwilling or unable to say where she’s been, clashes with Sam’s unabashed enthusiasm to have her grandma back. As Edna’s behaviour turns increasingly volatile, both begin to sense that an insidious presence in the house might be taking control of her.
Written and directed by Natalie Erika James, the film stars Emily Mortimer, Bella Heathcote and Robyn Nevin.
Also in trailers – Neon release uncut trailer for Brandon Cronenberg’s ‘Possessor’
The film hits cinemas and Digital October 30th
