“Billions,” “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “A Spy Among Friends” star Stephen Kunken will direct a film about “The Catcher in the Rye” author J.D. Salinger.
Kunken is currently preparing to star in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s climate change play “Kyoto” in Stratford-upon-Avon, U.K. The Salinger film, titled “The Red House,” will be Kunken’s follow-up to his feature directorial debut “Before/During/After” (2020), which won awards at the San Diego, Naples, Greenland and Dances With Films festivals.
“The Red House” is in collaboration with playwright and screenwriter Richard Nelson, who Kunken previously worked with on the plays “That Hopey Changey Thing,” “Sweet and Sad,” “Regular Singing” and “Nikolai and the Others.”
“I have collaborated with him probably more than any other playwright that I’ve worked with,” Kunken told Variety of Nelson. “I love him and I’m thrilled to make the jump to this new relationship with him.”

(Welcome to Yesterday's Enterprises, a series where we explore every corner of the vast "Star Trek" universe. In this edition: What does "A Matter of Perspective" say about Riker's sexual politics?)
As a commander, Captain Kirk (William Shatner) was, in the original "Star Trek" series, something of a level-headed, military-minded leader. Although the character eventually gained a pop culture reputation of being a ladies' man and a regular violator of the Prime Directive, when it comes to his command style, Kirk was often depicted as clear-thinking, serious, and unwilling to accept guff from anyone, even itinerant gods and omnipotent aliens. He approached problems with the eye of a tactician. Very occasionally, Spock (Leonard Nimoy) or Scotty (James Doohan) would take control of the Enterprise, and audiences would see how their command styles greatly differed from Kirk's. Spock pursued problems logically, but needed to learn to accept input from his follow officers.

The play is called Women Of A Certain Age, and we critics were invited to see it on the very evening it is set, November 8, 2016: Election Day. Although some of my colleagues were put out when Broadway producer Scott Rudin asked us to attend opening night of The Front Page, none of us has ever complained when asked to do so for the latest installment of Richard Nelson’s series about two unlike families living in the Hudson Valley hamlet of Rhinebeck, New York.
Each of the six plays, of which this was the final, is set in real time on its opening night. Truth to tell, I was nervous about how focused I could be, knowing that the quiet one-act unfolding there in the Public Theater’s third-floor LuEsther Hall would run right up against the first tallies of the voting for President. But these exquisitely intimate plays...

There are some movies that just get under your skin and cause you to have to think, and the worst part is you realise that they aren’t meant to be understood, and that is how they get their hooks into you. Robert Altman’s 3 Women was said to be based on a dream. I guess it comes as no surprise that it feels like it is one of the most haunting dreams you’ll have. With Arrow Video’s new Blu-ray it is also a dream of a release…
