Following last week’s lineup announcement, the Berlinale 2025 has now fleshed out its slate with the Competition, Special, and Perspectives sections. Highlights include the world premieres of Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon starring Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott; Radu Jude’s Kontinental ’25; Hong Sangsoo’s What Does that Nature Say to You; Michel Franco’s Dreams starring Jessica Chastain; Lucile Hadžihalilović’s The Ice Tower starring Marion Cotillard; and Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s Hot Milk with Emma Mackey, Fiona Shaw, and Vicky Krieps.
The festival will also include international premieres from Julia Loktev, Mary Bronstein, Kahlil Joseph, and more. In terms of omissions for films that potentially could have been a strong fit: there’s no Steven Soderberg’s Black Bag, Wes Anderson’s German production The Phoenician Scheme, nor Berlinale regular Christian Petzold, who wrapped Miroirs No. 3 only a few months ago.

Eric Trump was mocked on social media after he made hypocritical claims during an interview with Fox News.
“It’s sad,” he said. “We’re no better than some of these Third World countries around the world. We are literally trying to imprison political opponents. We’re better than this.”
He additionally claimed that the Department of Justice wants to imprison his father for “political speech” over the statements Donald Trump made before the January 6 riot.
Eric Trump was referring to his father’s recent indictments – but was incorrect in his statements. He was attempting to defend his father’s legal problems but forgot to mention his own Donald Trump’s past actions.
The former president is facing multiple charges related to money he paid to porn star Stormy Daniels, mishandling classified documents and conspiring to overturn the 2020 election.

Actress and now debuting director, writer and composer Aurélie Saada pours a tremendous amount of personal nostalgia into “Rose,” a feature steeped in love for her North African Jewish roots, from music (all written by Saada) to food — the credits even include her recipe for “makroud,” a date-filled cookie. The film stars Françoise Fabian as a recent widow hesitantly engaging with the world while emerging from under her children’s straightjacketing concerns, and . The result is that “Rose” never truly blooms. Notwithstanding such a handicap, its all-embracing effusion of Jewishness, both Sephardic and Ashkenazi, guarantees an easy sell across the Atlantic.

A borderline impossible game of Taboo could be played if one were tasked with describing Olivier Masset-Depasse’s “Mothers’ Instinct” without using the word “Hitchcockian.” The Belgian director’s luxuriant psychological thriller is so redolent of the Master of Suspense’s style, and so gorgeously robed in Thierry Delettre’s ’60s costuming that at times one expects star Veerle Baetens (“The Broken Circle Breakdown”) to turn around and just be Tippi Hedren all of a sudden. But as much as this deliciously enjoyable, spiral-shaped descent into darkness wears that influence on its immaculately cut, three-quarter-length sleeve, it also represents a subversion of even Hitch’s most femme-centric titles. Here, the devotion, jealousy, coercion, and, indeed, “Suspicion” that underpin his conception of male-female relations are ascribed to a female friendship instead.

Tiff Review: ‘Duelles (Mothers’ Instinct)’ Brings Melodramatic Suspense to an Idyllic Bourgeois Home
Director Olivier Masset-Depasse lets us know exactly what to expect out of Duelles (Mothers’ Instinct) from the start, introducing an idyllic bourgeois home with all the sensory cues to foreshadow melodramatic suspense. Alice Brunelle (Veerle Baetens) peers out her window as neighbor Céline Geniot (Anne Coesens) leaves, rushes out once the car pulls away. She enters the woman’s adjoining home with a set of keys to clandestinely move through and close the curtains. We assume the worst: an affair. The music manipulates this suspenseful thought, the camera in-close to lend an anxiously frenetic tone to her movements. And then Céline returns, sensing something amiss. We brace for the reveal as Masset-Depasse provides it with a sly smile, simultaneously proving we got worked up for nothing and that we weren’t wrong to do so.

Some people can’t help themselves from striving to be the best whether that means winning a contest, getting a promotion, earning accolades, or proving you’re the only one able to accomplish an impossible task. They want to be relied upon for results. Radu (Tudor Istodor) is all the above. Doing what he’s told isn’t enough — he looks beyond what’s asked to discover what’s needed. And when it comes to career this character trait has served him well. He possesses the connections, intelligence, and skills to operate in Romania as a “fixer” and believes those attributes assist his aspirations to become a journalist. But somewhere along the line he discovers how gray the area is in which he excels. Suddenly his bullish insistence takes on an air of exploitation.

The world of independent television is pretty chaotic right now, largely because, unlike the indie film scene, there’s no clear trajectory to success. Some shows threw all their money into shooting a pilot. Some shows have shot multiple episodes. Some shows have found alternate distribution opportunities already. Some shows remain unseen. All of them, though, want to go beyond their current status.

As an attendee of SeriesFest 2016, I had the opportunity to see a large percentage of the pilots screened as part of the independent pilot competition. Some of these pilots were not world premieres, but all of the ones I saw represented the impressive state of independent production today; where a shoestring budget can still produce content on a level equal to what you might watch on TV. ★★☆☆☆ Deceit and callousness abound in Sebastian Ko's psychological drama We Monsters (2015). It begins with an effective, open question which Marcus Seibert's screenplay then continues to re-pitch and re-frame throughout its runtime; if your child murdered someone, what would you do? It's an intriguing premise which is regrettably let down by fairly pedestrian treatment. Seibert never really manages to fully engage with the incidental - and more interesting - questions that he raises and as the narrative proceeds down its predictably dark path, it never quite settles on its tone meaning that neither its drama, nor its black-comedy, land the required punches.
There's a similar dichotomy to be found in Andreas Köhler's cinematography, which maintains a cool distance but is still littered with handheld tremors that seem to be reaching for an intimacy that the screenplay never affords. If one was being particularly generous, it could perhaps be...

For Bollywood, its lead jodis have been very crucial since time immemorial. In many instances, perfect casting of characters is known to have salvaged otherwise weak scripts. While the years gone by saw filmmakers playing safe and casting repetitive albeit bankable jodis who had proven their worth, 2012 saw filmmakers being additionally experimental than ever in embracing newer styles and ideas. ‘Old is gold’ became a theory of the past as filmmakers and casting teams, mixed and matched and gave cinema different, unique pairs, breaking the monotony and adding the much needed freshness to the screen. Here’s our countdown of the Top 10 JODIs that dazzled the 70mm in 2012

Rybojad’s Fictional Debut an Empty Husk
Director Stephane Rybojad, previously known for his work with French television documentaries, makes his fictional feature debut with Special Forces, a superfluous, timely message movie that flails itself at us with a generous amount of humanitarian well-meaning and poorly orchestrated combat sequences before devolving precariously into a survival of the elements picture. Assembling a first rate cast for his endeavor, this piece of journalistic championing posture play fails to enthrall on all levels, making this seem more like an adventurous piece of propaganda. Trying to be too many things at once, and not nearly well written enough to balance useless subplots, including a completely ill-conceived romance to top it all off, Rybojad’s film feels like an outline rather than a fully fleshed out feature.

Liberal Arts (12A)
(Josh Radnor, 2012, Us) Josh Radnor, Elizabeth Olsen, Richard Jenkins, 97 mins
University applications could well go into terminal decline as a result of this irritatingly winsome comedy, in which an archetypal New York slacker returns to his alma mater, meets an archetypal free-spirited young student (Olsen) and relives his lost youth of music, books and self-absorbed pseudo-intellectual chit chat. It's like Woody Allen without the wit.
The Perks Of Being A Wallflower (12A)

There are no villains in English Vinglish. Only imperfect human beings like you and I, who make that common error of taking loved ones for granted.
Admit it. At some point in our lives we have all felt that if we don’t speak good English, we are not destined to be successful human beings. Imagine a housewife–beautiful, efficient, charming, supportive…imagine if she looks like…well, Sridevi and still feels she is being taken for granted just because she can’t speak fluent angrezi.
Shashi’s children find her embarrassing at times. Her husband openly cracks jokes about her accent and poor grasp of a language we should have thrown out with Tom Alter’s wig in Shatranj Ke Khiladi. Shashi’s husband thinks he’s just being urbane and witty. But it hurts. We see...

An undemanding picture, but likable family comedy from India
Here is a likable family comedy from India with its own air of innocence, and a boisterous cameo from Amitabh Bachchan. Former ad director Gauri Shinde makes her feature debut, and the star is Bollywood veteran Sridevi. She plays Shashi, a shy housewife, mother and devoted cook who is feeling increasingly left out of things because, unlike her hip kids and businessman husband (Adil Hussain), she speaks hardly any English. Fate lends a hand when she has to travel on her own to New York for a month to help prepare a family wedding. The excitement of America inspires her to attend English classes; Shashi blossoms and grows in confidence, and catches the eye of lonely, handsome French classmate Laurent (Mehdi Nebbou) who begins to declare his untranslated, unsubtitled feelings to our gently flustered heroine. It's very amiable, feelgood entertainment, featuring some broad comedy and stereotypes,...

While the Toronto International Film Festival's City-to-City strand has focussed on Mumbai’s new wave of subversive independent filmmakers, the Gala section of Tiff has opted for standard Bollywood fare with this light-hearted comedy. Most of the action takes place in New York and features a band of English language students hailing from Africa, India, Mexico, France and China. Bollywood fans will be delighted with the news that the very watchable Indian actress Sridevi has come out of retirement to play a mother-of-two growing increasingly frustrated with life as a housewife in Pune, India. The Manhattan wedding of a niece gives her a chance to broaden her horizons and when she enlists in an English class, first-time writer-director Gauri Shinde playfully subvert norms by having French class mate Laurent (Mehdi Nebbou) fall head-over-heels for her. But any hint of transgression is undone by a safety first attitude that will win hearts while deadening minds.

English Vinglish is one of the most hotly anticipated films of the year. This is especially because the renowned actress Sridevi will officially be making her Bollywood comeback with this film after a hiatus of 15 years. It will also see a number of new faces including the French actor Mehdi Nebbou, who will be making his Bollywood debut in this film. Apparently both Sridevi and Mehdi developed a friendly relationship on the sets of English Vinglish. He taught her some French in exchange for a little Tamil, which is Sridevi’s mother tongue. The producer of the film R. Balki stated to an Indian newspaper however that at first, Sridevi was hesitant to interact with the cast and crew. “It was a really curious contradiction. On screen Sridevi was playing a very talkative woman. But once the camera was off she was very reserved to begin with. But gradually as...

The contentious story of the Mossad cell searching for perpetrators of the Munich Olympics massacre in 1972 is stylish and well acted, but the subject is nearly impossible to scale
Munich (2005)
Director: Steven Spielberg
Entertainment grade: C+
History grade: C+
In 1972, the terrorist group Black September kidnapped and murdered 11 Israeli athletes, officials and trainers at the Munich Olympics.
Media
In the early hours of 5 September 1972, eight armed men sneak into the Olympic village in Munich, break into the Israeli team's headquarters and take 11 hostages. These tense opening sequences are brilliantly and accurately done, intercutting TV reports with documentary footage and meticulous recreation. The Munich hostage drama, lasting 20 hours, was the first time a major terrorist attack became a live television event. This film captures that with great skill.
