Al Pacino is taking on Shakespeare again. After playing Shylock in 2004’s “The Merchant of Venice,” the Oscar winner is set to star as the title character in a new adaptation of the Bard’s “King Lear.” Michael Radford, who directed that version of “Venice” and received an Oscar nomination for “Il Postino,” is helming the new project.
“Lear is the one that everyone aims for. Al has been toying with the idea for a long time. There’s a difference between Shylock, who’s only in five scenes, and Lear, who is in every scene, pretty much,” Radford said. “It’s enormous. I think [Pacino] would like to have that kind of kudos because he’s a terrific actor.”
“Before, we had the passion and the desire, but we never had a start date. We all have the energy to do [King Lear] now. We’re creating, hopefully, an epic,” said producer Barry Navidi,...

Known for its annual Plume & Pellicule screenwriting workshop held annually in Sierre, Switzerland and for the development, support and promotion of films that make a difference, the program has 3 key phases.
First phase is a speed dating-style pitch session designed to introduce selected screenwriters, who benefitted from DreamAgo's screenwriting lab in Switzerland, to well-known producers and distributors. Screenwriters in attendance will have 10 minutes with a producer to present their project before moving on to the next producer and starting again. Among the producers participating are Linda Obst (Hope Floats, Sleepless In Seattle, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days), Golan Ramras (One Missed Call, The Incredible Hulk), Kelley Feldsott Reynolds (The Flyboys, The Unsaid, Five Fingers), Sukee Chew (Jesus Henry Christ, Fireflies In The Garden), Christina Piovesan (Red Lights, The Whistleblower, Amreeka), Paula Mazanedo-Schmit (VP Film Finances Inc.), David Miller (Amal Sidarth, My Foolish Heart) and Vanessa Adkins (Unthinkable, A Late Quartet).
Second, the program offers the opportunity for any WGA writer to propose a feature project and try to win a six weeks Residency in Sierre (Switzerland), all costs covered. Among the more than 250 pitches submitted, DreamAgo & the Residence Ruffieux will select 15 projects and each of the writers will be given the opportunity to pitch it in person for 10 minutes. The lucky winner will be revealed during a brunch at the Swiss Consulate.
Third, DreamAgo will present a panel, in partnership with The Writers Guild of America, the topic this year: How to Preserve Your Vision When Those Around You Won't Leave It Alone? (Hint: An International Production Might Be Your Solution), on Friday, November 2nd. Panelists confirmed for this event include Barry Navidi (Producer, The Merchant Of Venice, Wild Salome), Sydney Levine (Creator of Sydney's Buzz a Network Blog on Indiewire, Founder of Film Finders), Vince Fischer (International Agent, Creator of the International Eci Agency), and Neil Landau (Writer, Tad The Lost Explorer).
Writer Howard Rodman (Joe Gould'S Secret, Savage Grace) will serve as moderator.
Additionally, DreamAgo will also have a part in the celebrated Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards that pay tribute to the off-screen talents. The 6th edition will take place in Hollywood on October 28, just prior to the start of Afm. None of us have enough on the long-dormant Divine Rapture to estimate its overall quality, but there has to be something special in material that lets a producer hold on for seventeen years. This is the situation with Barry Navidi, who’s been holding out hope for a Glenda Ganis-penned religious tale — one which would’ve starred Marlon Brando, Johnny Depp, and Debra Winger — that was struck down after the proper financing fell through in 1995. (A failed venture that ended up bankrupting the Irish village of Ballycotton, Co Cork and many of its citizens in the meantime.)
With, for lack of a better phrase, the patience of a saint, Navidi has waiting for Rapture to get its due, and now might finally be the time. When speaking to The Belfast Telegraph (via The Guardian), the producer announced that he’s “going to do it within the next six months...

Much like Terry Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, the film Divine Rapture is one of those legendary films that is famous for not existing. While production actually began in the summer of 1995, with an amazing cast that included Marlon Brando, Johnny Depp, Debra Winger and John Hurt, it was eventually revealed that the escrow account for CineFin, the production company behind the movie, didn't exist. With no money to continue and only 24 minutes of footage shot, production was halted and never started up again. But nothing lasts forever, right? The Belfast Telegraph is reporting that Divine Rapture may actually get a second life. Producer Barry Navidi, who worked for six years to get the project off the ground in the mid-90s, is now saying that within the next six month he plans to try and make the film once again. There is a catch, though: ""It...

At the best of times, particularly in the latter stages of his career, Marlon Brando was pretty unpredictable; you never knew what you might get from the mercurial actor once he was on set. But in the case of the never-made "Divine Rapture," the filmmakers never got a chance to see what might happen out of their starry production. Set to star Brando, his friend Johnny Depp (they worked together on "The Brave" and "Don Juan DeMarco") and Debra Winger, the film was all set to shoot in Ballycotton, Ireland (indeed, you can see the cast in costume above) when producers CineFin failed to secure the $4 million they needed to make the movie, leaving the movie and many villagers in the lurch. This was back in 1995, however producer Barry Navidi (Al Pacino pics "The Merchant Of Venice," "Wilde Salome" and the upcoming "King Lear") has stuck with it and it...

Al Pacino is to reunite with his Merchant of Venice writer-director Michael Radford for a new adaptation of King Lear. Producer Barry Navidi and director of photography Benoit Delhomme are also onboard from the 2004 release in which Pacino played Shylock. Radford has again adapted Shakespeare's tale of an aged, arrogant king, whose decision to divide his kingdom between his daughters turns out very badly for just about everybody involved. Casting for the other principle parts is now underway, with pre-production scheduled for...

The first sign things were going wrong on the set of Divine Rapture was when Marlon Brando shaved his head. But that was the least of the film's troubles
If all the roads in Ireland were to converge at a final destination, you would probably find yourself in Ballycotton, Co Cork. A tiny village on a rocky headland, it is as removed and cosy as its name suggests. Its harbour is stocked with a colourful fishing fleet and traditional music seeps from the pubs on Main Street. Despite an annual running marathon that passes through the town, it is slow-paced, sleepy, and cocooned from the outside world. But although 200-ft cliffs keep the Atlantic at bay and an offshore lighthouse looks out for danger, nothing could protect Ballycotton from nature's cruellest force: Hollywood.
Back in 1995, Johnny Depp, Debra Winger, and Marlon Brando rolled into town to make a film called Divine Rapture.

He got to play the tough lender Shylock in the 2004 adaptation of The Merchant of Venice, and now Al Pacino wants to take on Shakespeare's equivalent of Cinderella and her wretched stepsisters. Variety reports that he's grabbing the lead in Michael Radford's upcoming adaptation of King Lear.
But wait -- this isn't the same project that's already got Anthony Hopkins, Keira Knightley, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Naomi Watts. Yes, we're getting Two King Lear films. While I don't particularly agree with the practice, I get how dueling pictures come to be -- but this is ridiculous!
Producer Barry Navidi says that Radford "came up with the most brilliant adaptation and Al and I flipped for it." It better be one heck of a showstopper, because not any production can face Hopkins and survive (let alone that trio of actresses). Me, I prefer the idea of Hopkins. I've seen Al's Shylock,...

William Shakespeare is headed back to the big screen again. Michael Radford is writing and directing a new adaptation of Shakespeare's King Lear and has set Al Pacino to play the lead role. Radford and Pacino previously worked together on Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice in 2004, where Pacino played Shylock. "Al has been offered this role many times over the years, but didn't feel ready," producer Barry Navidi told Variety. "He's ready now. The film will be true to its period, very similar to the classical look of Merchant of Venice. Michael came up with the most brilliant adaptation and Al and I flipped for it." Here is a quick intro to the story in King Lear from Wikipedia: Lear, who is old, wants to retire from power. He decides to divide his realm among his three daughters, and offers the largest share to the one who loves him best.

Pacino Is Crowned King Lear
Hollywood legend Al Pacino is joining forces with filmmaker Michael Radford for their second shot at Shakespeare - the pair is planning a big screen adaptation of King Lear. The Oscar-winner will take on the film's title role of an ageing pre-Roman British monarch who loses everything due to his scheming daughters' plots.
It's the first time Pacino has tackled the part, although he has played a string of the playwright's other famous characters during his career.
The Scarface star previously worked with Radford on 2004's The Merchant of Venice, in which he played the story's central character, Shylock.
And Pacino will be in good company - some of acting's most revered talents have played the ageing King, including Laurence Olivier, Orson Welles and most recently Sir Ian McKellan.
And King Lear's producer Barry Navidi, who also worked on Merchant of Venice, insists it has taken years to persuade Pacino to play the role - but is adamant it was worth the wait.
He tells Variety, "Al (Pacino) has been offered this role many times over the years, but didn't feel ready.

Multi-award winning actor Al Pacino is set to play the title role on a film adaptation of Shakespeare's "King Lear."
The project will be produced by Barry Navidi, who teamed with the Hollywood legend on their "The Merchant of Venice" days in 2004.
Pacino, 68, will play the aging monarch in the new adaptation. And as the classic story goes, he will select his successor by dividing his kingdom in three parts, ruled by his three daughters. The two eldest both want to outsmart the others, conniving to flatter their father. While Cordelia, the loving one, refuses to play the greed game and is exiled.
King Lear then lost everything, realizing too late of his mistake.
