Once again, Subhash K Jha revisits a film in his This Day That Year series, this installment shines the spotlight on the film Thanks Maa. A gritty hard hitting drama of a street kid’s search for an infant’s mother also, according to the director, paid a tribute to Salman Khan’s career.
Strongly reminiscent of Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay and far more resonantly representative of Mumbai’s slum kids than Slumdog Millionaire, Thanks Maa, which clocks fifteen years on March 5, is a journey into lives that were born into despair. Without the crutches of self-pity, debutant director Irfan Kamal (son of the reputed choreographer Kamal) enters the world of the orphaned protagonist named Municipality, who, on one of those routine days of scavenging, stealing, and hanging around with his friends waiting for the next meal comes across an abandoned little infant. Why Did The Filming Schedule Of Aamir Khan’s Lagaan Extend? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Apoorva Lakhia, a filmmaker who started his journey by assisting names like Mira Nair and Ang Lee, earned recognition in Indian cinema through his work on Lagaan as an assistant director. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and produced by Aamir Khan, Lagaan is a milestone in Indian film history. Released in 2001, the period drama is celebrated for its unique storyline and its status as one of the greatest Indian movies ever made.
However, behind the cinematic glory lay an exhausting production journey, which Lakhia recently detailed. Despite being planned as an 80-day shoot, the film took nearly 300 days to complete. Extreme weather conditions, logistical challenges, and unforeseen setbacks led to this delay. From directing scenes from a hospital bed to financial hurdles that required Aamir Khan’s intervention, Lagaan faced many hurdles to complete.

To put it bluntly, Valentine’s Day is perhaps the most awkward national holiday. On the one hand you have lovely and joyful romantic partners eager to get their plans started, and on the other hand you have lovely but dissatisfied singles preparing to witness all the plans in action, right? No! There are also people who get together with their palentines and do something quiet or have an absolute rager, people who go to bars or clubs or parties for the sake of a good time, people who visit loved ones—who may have lost loved ones—to offer comfort and company, etc. Then, there are those of us die-hard cinephiles who don’t have a fulfilling holiday without popping in a film or two. Whether you have a valentine, palentine, or you’re a singleton, there’s something for everyone to enjoy under the “Sweet and Sour” sublist,...

Philosophy professor-turned-filmmaker Adam J. Graves never imagined his feature directorial debut would land on Netflix and garner an Oscar nomination. But a Dairy Queen run during the pandemic changed everything.
“We were coming home from Dairy Queen – it was the only place open – and I turned to my wife and said, ‘You know what, I’m going to make a movie,'” Graves tells Variety. “I thought she would just say forget it because it’s kind of crazy hairbrained. We’ve got kids and financial responsibilities. But instead she was like, ‘Let’s do it.'”
The result is “Anuja,” a 22-minute short about two sisters working in a back-alley garment factory. The narrative follows the young protagonist as she faces a decision that will impact both her future and her family. The film has attracted heavyweight supporters including Mindy Kaling and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. The project emerged from...

Ask Ed Lachman about the use of color and the cinematographer provides a perfect layman’s primer in art education.
“Why are hospitals blue and green? Those are restful, peaceful colors. Why are fast food restaurants red and orange? Because those activate our passion and our appetite,” Lachman said in his laid-back, easygoing voice. “Theoreticians on painting, like Goethe in his book in 1810 or Josef Albers in the 1960s, have talked a lot about how color affects the viewer. It’s all very primitive and emotional and I love to play around with that.”
Lachman, for sure, plays with color, as well as four different film formats, in Pablo Larraín’ “Maria,” which depicts the final days of opera star Maria Callas (Angelina Jolie). The work has earned Lachman his fourth Oscar nomination, following nods for “Far From Heaven,” “Carol” and “El Conde.”

It has been 18 years since Madhur Bhandarkar8s drama Traffic Signal was released. Subhash K Jha revisits the film and shares some very intriguing answers the director gave when the film hit the big screen.
Life for Madhur Bhandarkar’s characters sucks. They’re often a victim of sexual and political abuse. And you’re inclined to turn away from their anguish. What redeems the people in Traffic Signal are their frailties and their unquestionable humanism. The director captures them in on a cascading and mutating canvas. We see lives frozen in a state of emotional and economical imbroglio.
The characters are often seen doing the metaphysical equivalent of picking their nose in public. There’s no shame in letting it all hang out as long as the characters are prone to probe their wounds in bouts of agonized satire.
If Page 3 probed the beau-monde with incredible emotional sharpness, Traffic...

Indian cinema star Tabu plays a pivotal role in the “Dune” universe in Max’s prequel series “Dune: Prophecy,” appearing as Sister Francesca in the final two episodes.
Inspired by “Sisterhood of Dune” by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, the series is set 10,000 years before the events of “Dune” and follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces threatening humankind’s future while establishing what will become the Bene Gesserit order.
Alison Schapker serves as showrunner and executive producer, with Diane Ademu-John co-developing the series and serving as executive producer. Anna Foerster executive produced and directed multiple episodes.
The role came to Tabu – whose international credits include Mira Nair’s “The Namesake” (2006) and “A Suitable Boy” (2020) and Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” (2012) – through a straightforward process.
“I just got an email one day from my agents and my managers telling me that Alison and Anna were the showrunners...

By most accounts, indie cinema legend Ed Lachman is on track to land his second consecutive Oscar nomination for a collaboration with the great Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín. The cinematography legend was nominated last year for the arresting black-and-white photography of Larraín’s satirical gothic fable El Conde; and he is back in contention in the best cinematography category this season with his exquisitely painterly work on Maria, the Angelina Jolie-starring Netflix biographical film about the life and inner world of the great 20th-century opera diva, Maria Callas.
The Hollywood Reporter recently sat down with Lachman for a special session of THR Presents to discuss in detail how Maria was crafted — the complex array of camera, lighting and color choices that went into the film’s arresting but elegant imagery, the nature of Lachman’s collaboration with Jolie and Larraín, and the various principles that have come to inform...

Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Lucy Walker began a Saturday panel discussion on stories that travel by describing her own wanderlust backstory.
“As a girl growing up in London, I didn’t have enough money to travel. And I didn’t think being on vacation was the most interesting way to see the world. And yet I really wanted to travel and work and understand people, so I’ve designed myself a job making documentary films where I get to travel the world,” said Walker, who arrived at the International Film Festival of India in Goa having earlier this week won another award, in New York, for her Nepal-set tale “Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lakhpa Sherpa.”
“When I make a film, I always have a question, one that I’ll drop everything to find out about: what’s going to happen? Will they be able to climb the mountain? Will they be okay?...

Maybe because it’s one of the most immediate art forms, it can be hard to talk about music. But on Friday at the Middleburg Film Festival, composers and songwriters Lesley Barber, Kris Bowers, Charles Fox, Mychael Danna, Clement Ducol & Camille, Taura Stinson, and Diane Warren were able to get at some key insights into how scores and songs can support great film storytelling. As it does with most things, the time musicians have to grapple with a story matters.
The danger of too little time is that you won’t be able to get the work done, of course, but there is such a thing as too much time too. Danna told the panel and the crowd at Middleburg that it’s possible to over-rotate and second-guess yourself into losing sight of what the music needs to accomplish. “No one can procrastinate as well as me. My favorite way...

After spending months talking about his long-nurtured dream project, Megalopolis, Francis Ford Coppola embraced the chance to depart from promo tour talking points.
Calling Megaloplis “a great adventure,” Coppola affirmed with a smile in accepting his DGA Honor on Thursday night, “I decided tonight I wouldn’t say anything I’ve been saying.”
After being given the award by his granddaughter, Gia, Coppola said he was delighted to spin yarns about “how the Director’s Guild was founded.” While he didn’t do so in linear fashion, the 85-year-old filmmaker had the audience in the palm of his hand as he recounted giants of cinema and his personal touchstones, paying tribute to masters like Billy Wilder, King Vidor and Samuel Goldwyn.
When he met Jean Renoir, Coppola recalled, the French filmmaker gave him a “beautiful smile” and shook his hand “like he was welcoming me to this profession that he loved so much.

It’s been 30 years since a film from India has been selected in the main competition at Cannes, but that finally changed this year.
Recent editions of Sundance, Tribeca, and Toronto have included riveting and even Oscar-nominated documentaries and features. In fact, Mira Nair’s “Monsoon Wedding” won the Golden Lion at Venice more than two decades ago. Granted, Cannes has recently programmed South Asian gems in other sections, such as the Queer Palm-winning “Joyland” from Pakistan in Un Certain Regard in 2022, or Anurag Kashyap’s “Kennedy” in Midnight last year. But would the South Asian drought in the main competition ever end?
Many were ecstatic last month when “All We Imagine as Light”, Mumbai-based Payal Kapadia’s narrative directorial debut, was announced in the competition lineup alongside legendary Cannes regulars: European heavyweights such as Jacques Audiard and Yorgos Lanthimos, American auteurs David Cronenberg and Paul Schrader, and Asian visionary Jia Zhangke.

Films by innovative directors offer fresh perspectives and challenge social norms, despite lack of mainstream recognition. Auteurs like Nair, Kieslowski, and Oshima have made significant contributions, each with a unique take on storytelling. Lesser-known directors like Martin, Hui, and Misumi offer enriching experiences, broadening viewers' understanding of global cinema.
Many of the most innovative and talented film directors of all time have also somehow evaded mainstream recognition today. These directors often work outside of Hollywood, producing films with distinctive artistic visions, and offeringing fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to storytelling. Their works may explore unconventional cinematic techniques, delve into niche subjects, or challenge social norms. Despite their lack of widespread fame, these directors have garnered critical acclaim within the film industry and among cinephiles for their creativity, craftsmanship, and ability to evoke powerful emotions.

Robert Pattinson, one of the most talented English actors, embarked on his acting journey when he was 15. After playing supporting roles in the German made-for-television film Ring of the Nibelungs in 2004 and Mira Nair’s costume drama Vanity Fair, he landed the role of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in 2005.
The role of Cedric Diggory helped Robert Pattinson earn recognition in the industry. Then came his portrayal of Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga, based on Stephenie Meyer’s eponymous novel series. Although this role gained him worldwide recognition, the actor is not very fond of it. In 2022, he finally got the chance to portray the DC Comics superhero Batman and might be reprising his role sooner than fans had expected.

The 2024 Sundance Film Festival was essentially one giant reunion for the flyboys of “Top Gun: Maverick,” with Danny Ramirez, Glen Powell and Jay Ellis all starring in films playing the festival.
The trio trekked to Park City, Ut just days after news broke that a third “Top Gun” movie was in the works at Paramount, and Ramirez told Variety that the cast’s group text — fittingly named with the emojis “up” and “gun” — had been “buzzing” with questions about what’s going on with the developing project.
“Obviously, it’d be amazing to be able to do a third film in this beautiful story. But, as we learned with the second one, it’s got to be absolutely right,” Ramirez said, noting the 30-year gap between the original “Top Gun” and “Maverick.”
“Being cognizant of that, we’re excited at the prospect of everyone back in the air,” he teased.
