The 1980s are often viewed as a pop cultural wasteland: a post-disco, style-over-substance hellscape where music videos turned vacuous bands and singers into chart-topping titans, blockbuster-chasing executives drained films of personality and artistic merit, and television pandered to a benumbed viewership with hacky sitcoms, formula dramas, and risible nighttime soaps. This was only half-true.
There was a good bit of dreck polluting the multiplexes and the airwaves throughout the eight-year Reagan era (and the Bush I hangover), but you'd have to be a killjoy to have lived through that time and turned up your nose at the bevy of brilliant artists who were working at their absolute peak. Tom Selleck wasn't a fan of the title Magnum, P.I., believing it to be "really sh-tty". Selleck almost played Indiana Jones instead of Harrison Ford, but couldn't due to his contract for Magnum, P.I. Despite not playing Indiana Jones, Selleck went on to have a successful career with Magnum, P.I. and more.
Tom Selleck is known to a generation as private investigator Thomas Magnum, but it seems the actors disliked one thing about his most famous role the name of the series he appeared in. Magnum, P.I. was a huge hit for Selleck in the 1980s, but in his new memoir, the actor shares how the title of the series was not something he was overly enthusiastic about.

On September 15, 1965, Irwin Allen whisked television viewers out of their living rooms on a journey to the outer reaches of space, where the Robinson family finds themselves marooned on a strange, not-entirely-hospitable planet thanks to the sabotage of their chief medical officer. For a nation dreaming of a seemingly impossible moon landing, "Lost in Space" was both wish fulfillment and cautionary tale; a part of us was enthralled by the notion of exploring the cosmos, but we were also terrified by the thought of aimlessly hurtling through a universe with no known end and no direction home.
Allen's series didn't dwell much on the more frightening aspects of the Robinsons' predicament. Unlike Gene Roddenberry's "Star Trek" (which would debut a year later), Allen employed a fairly rigid formula that found the Robinsons and the hunky Major Don West (Mark Goddard) having to outwit the generally inept scheming of Dr.

In a world where superheroes, sequels, horror (thankfully) and anything IP related are king, it seems as though the risqué original thriller has gone by the wayside. Over the past ten years or so you’d be hard pressed to find anything other than The Invisible Man, You Should Have Left, Gerald’s Game, Gone Girl, or Knock, Knock that really fit the mold (albeit with some finagling) and each of those is either tied to popular literature or skews closer to the horror genre.
But the original thriller thrived in the 1990s. Also thriving during this beautiful time in Hollywood were action movies featuring two adversaries face to face on the poster and/or movie cover. Movies like Face/Off, Point Break, Demolition Man, Universal Soldier, and Broken Arrow. 1992’s Unlawful Entry combines both of these elements with two heaping sides of the stalker and slasher horror subgenres. Which is why...

Magnum P.I.'s showrunner says the upcoming series finale will be a satisfying conclusion for fans.
The reboot series producer Eric Guggenheim spoke to Collider about NBC's abrupt decision to end the Jay Hernandez-led show as its final run of episodes for Season 5 are currently airing. Though the upcoming finale titled "The Big Squeeze" was not filmed intentionally as a conclusion to the series, Guggenheim believes that the audience that supported Magnum since its CBS years will be pleased with the ending. "In the case of this season, the finale was not written to be a series finale, but because we hadn’t gotten a pickup, we did take that possibility into consideration as we were crafting it," Guggenheim said.

This critic might want to look for a different job.
The prospect of seeing the great Ian McKellen take on the role of one of London’s most august theater critics of the 1930s must have looked tantalizing on paper, but sadly this is a show that deserved to close out of town. Despite a colorful central character who could have knowledgeably and amusingly navigated a cruise through the dynamic theatrical scene close to a century ago, The Critic unaccountably shifts its focus away from McKellen’s Jimmy Erskin, who entertainingly dominates the film at the start, and onto a group of characters who are almost entirely uninteresting; there’s not even much juicy inside stuff about the legit theater at an exciting time for it. Given the setting, period and endless possibilities of the material, this is a major disappointment, a drag of the first order.

One of the coolest guys of the eighties was Tom Selleck, and everyone absolutely loved him playing the laid-back Thomas Magnum on the classic series Magnum, P.I. Running from 1980 to 1988; the show proved to be a mixed blessing for its star, as Selleck had auditioned to play Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark and was actually chosen to play the part. He had to pass because he had already shot the pilot for Magnum, P.I., and the network wouldn’t let him out of his contract.
While passing up the opportunity to play the whip-wielding archeologist must have stung, Magnum P.I. ran for eight years and was one of the biggest shows of the decade. Selleck became a household name and parlayed his success on the show into a series of film roles (including Best Movie You Never Saw fave Runaway), culminating with the release of Three Men and a Baby,...

Stephen Hill is happy to be soaring in the skies above Oahu again.
That’s a bit of an exaggeration as Hill’s character, Theodore Calvin, is a chopper pilot on the NBC drama Magnum P.I.
But recently, he found himself up in the air as CBS canceled the series after four seasons, only to have NBC scoop it up about six weeks later.
In an exclusive interview, the cordial Hill said that he never doubted that the tales of T.C. and the rest of the Magnum gang would continue.
“There was something in me that felt so unfinished with this project and this character,” Hill recalled. “It felt unnatural not to be working on it. I also knew they were working on bringing it back behind the scenes. The fact they were even working on it gave us hope from the very beginning.”
And when word of the pick-up came down,...

Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be a streaming event for the first time on the Netflix YouTube channel. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute.
Among that group will certainly be Oscar winners Louise Fletcher, William Hurt and Irene Cara, plus nominees Angela Lansbury (a SAG life achievement recipient) and Melinda Dillon. Emmy champs Mary Alice, Kirstie Alley, Leslie Jordan, Ray Liotta, Stuart Margolin, Robert Morse and Barbara Walters.

Anthony Anderson presented Legend and the segment, saying, “It never feels like the right time to say goodbye to a loved one, a friend or a cherished icon.”
He added. “To quote Shakespeare, ‘All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players, they have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts.’ As we acknowledge the legends within our industry will pass on, we celebrate all that they created and shared with the world. Bert Fields, a highly respected entertainment lawyer who throughout his career represented Hollywood heavyweights including Tom Cruise, The Beatles, Edward G. Robinson, Jeffrey Katzenberg and more, has died. He was 93.
The Harvard-educated lawyer with his firm Greenberg Glusker Fields Claman & Machtinger died Sunday night at his home in Malibu with his wife Barbara Guggenheim by his side, a family friend and a representative for his firm told TheWrap.
Guggenheim told TheWrap that Fields had been working up until about three weeks ago, but ultimately succumbed to the long-term effects of Covid, which he contracted in March 2020. Fields, she said, had Bell’s Palsy as an aftereffect of the virus, which led to gradual paralysis of his body, starting from his larynx downward.
“Bert led 10 lives,” she told TheWrap. “All interesting.”
A “who’s who” of an entertainment lawyer, some of Fields’ other clients included Mel Brooks, Dustin Hoffman, Warren Beatty and many more.

In 1977 Burt Reynolds was on top of the Hollywood world, a bankable star whose popularity knew no bounds. In between his payday Smokey and the Bandit vehicles, he tried working with directors Peter Bogdanovich, Robert Aldrich, Stanley Donen … and with this film, the highly entertaining, somewhat unpredictable Michael Ritchie. The adaptation of Dan Jenkins’ NFL football book takes a left turn into social satire (or honest reportage), and centers on a romantic triangle with Jill Clayburgh and Kris Kristofferson. You might not remember all of its non- PC rough edges … which were already Sop for comedies of the ’70s.

Katsumoto is the real thing.
Katsumoto teamed up with Magnum on Magnum P.I. Season 1 Episode 18 to deliver one of the best and emotional episodes of the season so far.
Not only did we get to see a vulnerable Katsumoto open up to Magnum (that ending!), but we also got a treat when the Og T.C., Roger E. Mosley, made an appearance as Booky, the Barber!
Magnum P.I. made a great choice not having Mosley help the guys on a case because that would have just been weird and out of place.
Making him a barber worked quite well, and him trimming the new T.C's beard was kind of wonky cool.

Joseph Wambaugh’s breakthrough novel went through a blender to fit George C. Scott into the narrative, but it’s still a great cop show with terrific work from Stacy Keach and Scott Wilson, not to mention Jane Alexander and Rosalind Cash. The pro-cop agenda has a definite tone of personal experience, and the grim finish is anything but feel-good puffery.

I don’t carry a sign over my head announcing my feminism—I do it with a tote bag from Emily’s List, which I use to, uh, tote my lunch and papers and such back and forth from work. Said bag is inscribed with the following:

I’ve always thought of “equal rights and opportunities” in terms of work and salary, but I suppose it can also be applied to the prerogative of making a total ass of yourself in public, regardless of gender.
I am referring to the “Whedon vs. Cole” controversy that my buddy John Ostrander talked about yesterday, and which has caused mucho uproar all over the web, including over at the Whedonverse fan site, which is supposedly shutting down over it, although I had no trouble opening...

The TV sequel that never even occurred to you looks to be on target as ABC is developing a Magnum P.I. for modern times. Deadline is reporting that Leverage creator John Rogers and Eva Longoria’s UnbeliEVAble Entertainment are in the process of creating a follow-up to the 1980s private investigator drama which starred Tom Selleck (and his trademark mustache) as the title character. But in this update, the show will center on Magnum’s daughter, Lily “Tommy” Magnum. “We knew no one could replace the iconic role of Thomas Magnum, so John decided to make the reboot a sequel and continue the adventure of a Magnum — his daughter, who was established in the original series,” Longoria and Spector told the publication. In Magnum 2.0, “Tommy” comes back to Hawaii to run her dad’s investigation firm. No word yet on who will be cast for the title role, but...

By 1974 John Wayne was in the twilight of his long, distinguished film career that had spanned six decades. Although the genre that we associate him most with, the Western, was still in vogue, the trend among audience preferences had clearly shifted to urban crime dramas. Surprisingly, Wayne had never played a cop or detective - unless you want to count his role in the lamentable "Big Jim McLain", a 1952 Warner Brothers propaganda film that served as a love letter to Sen. Joseph McCarthy. In that turkey, Wayne played an investigator for Huac, the House UnAmerican Activities Committee that served as McCarthy's private police force, presumably searching out commie infiltrators. All they ended up doing was ruining the lives of left-wing people in the arts and academia. Wayne, for his part, remained unapologetic for his support of Huac even after McCarthy's popularity plummeted and he ended his career in shame and disgrace.

The great folks at Code Red DVD are at it once again digging up hard-to-find blasts from the past to give the digital treatment to. Two of the latest drive-in favorites getting the special edition treatment via Code Red are the el cheapo 1974 cult fave Horror High (Aka Twisted Brain) and the 1973 survival thriller Terminal Island.
First out of the gate on August 10th will be a brand new 16x9 (1.85:1) print of Horror High mastered from HiDef from the original 35mm dupe negatives from Crown International's vault. This marks the first time the film has ever been released uncut on home video.
A series of grisly murders wreaks havoc at a small Texas high school! A no-nonsense cop is assigned to find out the identity of the mad devious killer who roams the corridors of the high school. A mild mannered student has been drinking a mysterious potion that turns himself into Vernon,...

This weekend marks the opening of the highly anticipated film "The A-Team", the action film based on the wildly popular 80's television show. On a personal note I've been dying to see this film ever since the first trailer came out.
TV shows being made into movies is hardly a new phenomena. "Star Trek", "Transformers", "The Brady Bunch", "Mission Impossible", "Lost In Space"... well... the list goes on and on and on.
One of the ripest picking grounds for TV shows to be adapted into movies seems to be the 1980's, and "The A-Team" is just the lastest... but it certainly isn't going to be the last.
Right now there are a handful shows from the 80's being developed for the big screen, and right now I thought I'd run down 4 high profile ones that you may not have known were coming to an AMC near you in the foreseeable future!

- AMC - Script to Screen
Tom Selleck starred as the sexy and Hawaiian shirt-wearing private investigator Thomas Magnum for eight seasons on CBS. The Hawaii-based action adventure series Magnum P.I. ran for 157 episodes from 1980 - 1988 and also starred actors John Hillerman, Roger E. Mosley and Larry Manetti. Like many other popular classic shows, the series has been rumored to get "the big screen treatment" for years but now it looks like it may finally happen.
It's being reported that Rawson Marshall Thurber (director and writer of Dodgeball and the upcoming The Mysteries of Pittsburgh) has completed a redraft of a Magnum script. Thurber was signed to write and direct the project in early 2006.
In addition, much of the film's main cast has already been chosen -- with new actors in the familiar roles. For now, the word is that Matthew McConaughey will play Thomas Magnum, with Tyrese Gibson as chopper flying T.C. Calvin, Steve Zahn as friend Rick Wright,...

Clooney Lines Up Magnum Movie Role?

Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney will reportedly play TV private investigator Magnum PI in a big screen version of the 80s hit show. Pals of the actor say Clooney is desperate to take on the role made famous on the small screen by Tom Selleck between 1980 and 1988. They claim the mustachioed Magnum completes a "holy trinity" of roles Clooney has secretly coveted; "He's wanted to play three characters since he started acting - Danny Ocean in Ocean's Eleven, Hannibal in the A-Team and Magnum. He's had the A-Team movie in the works for a while now, so he's been chasing this one really hard." Hollywood sources say the film, which will begin shooting next year, will feature the brand new $800,000 Ferrari Enzo sports car in place of Magnum's classic Ferrari 308 Gts. But the identities of who will play Magnum's side-kicks Theodore 'TC' Calvin, Orville 'Rick' Wright and Jonathan Quayle Higgins III - played by Roger E Mosley, Larry Manetti and John Hillerman in the TV original - are being kept top secret. Manetti recently slammed plans to recreate the show without its original cast as "an outrage".
