Exclusive: There’s been a lot of buzz in the UK surrounding rising producer Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor.
With intriguing credits like Blue Story and Boxing Day, Gharoro-Akpojotor has demonstrated a unique ability to get projects that are subversive in both content and creation — everything she’s produced so far has boasted a majority non-white cast — over the line and onto our screens at a time when commissioners are more risk-averse, and budgets are much tighter.
The Nigerian-raised Londoner is at the Berlinale this year with a new project, her directorial debut. Titled Dreamers, Gharoro-Akpojotor directed the film from a screenplay she wrote. The film follows Nigerian-born Isio, who, after living undocumented in the UK for two years, is caught and sent to the Hatchworth Removal Centre. She hopes for a fair asylum hearing and is convinced that, as long as she strictly follows the rules, she will be released – even if her charismatic new roommate,...

The UK’s Independent Film Tax Credit (Iftc) is stirring interest from potential European partners but producers with films in the Berlinale warn stumbling blocks remain.

Liz Feldman’s No Good Deed has suspense, emotion and humor all in one. The murder mystery series starring Lisa Kudrow, Ray Romano, Abbi Jacobson, Denis Leary, Poppy Liu. O-t Fagbenle, Teyonah Parris, Luke Wilson and Linda Cardellini arrived on Netflix Dec. 12.
Throughout the series, several songs emphasize moments or themes in the show, like that of home, which is punctuated by Ozzy Osbourne and Motley Crue songs. A Eurythmics number sets the tone at a big scene in the finale, and a Bon Jovi song also pulls at the sinister side of the story.
Several other original songs performed by different characters put some spin on the series, which follows the Morgans, Lydia (Kudrow) and Paul (Romano) as they attempt to sell their house to reasonable buyers so that they can move on from a tragic event that happened there a few years ago. Thus, three couples — Leslie (Jacobson...

Liz Feldman is back with a new series called “No Good Deed,” and just as she did in her Netflix series “Dead to Me,” she’s set up a pretty good mystery.
Now streaming on Netflix, the show centers on Paul and Lydia, who are trying to sell their very popular and desired home. For them, it’s become haunted after their son was killed there three years earlier.
His death is labeled a casualty of a home invasion, but nothing is quite what it seems on this one. And there are plenty of potential suspects in and around the neighborhood.
Here are the faces you’ll need to know.
Netflix Lydia Morgan (Lisa Kudrow)
Lydia Morgan is a renowned pianist, but after her son is killed, she can’t keep her hands from shaking and temporarily loses her ability to play. She’s brought to life by “Friends” and “Time Bandits” star Lisa Kudrow.

Exclusive: Chloe East (The Fabelmans) is set for a key recurring role opposite Ray Romano and Lisa Kudrow in Netflix‘s upcoming comedy series No Good Deed, from creator Liz Feldman (Dead to Me).
The eight-episode No Good Deed is a half-hour, dark comedy that follows three very different families vying to buy the very same 1920s Spanish-style villa that they think will solve all their problems. But as the sellers have already discovered, sometimes the home of your dreams can be a total nightmare.
East will play Emily Morgan, Paul (Romano) and Lydia (Kudrow) Morgan’s artsy but put-together daughter. She’s been away at college, but there may be other reasons she’s been distant.
Feldman serves as showrunner and executive produces alongside Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum for Gloria Sanchez Productions, Christie Smith, and Silver Tree, who will direct the pilot and additional episodes.

Harry Macqueen’s Supernova, which makes its world premiere bow at the San Sebastián Film Festival next week, is a film founded in contrasts. A simple, intimate love story that follows a middle-aged gay couple, Sam and Tusker, on a road trip through England’s Lake District as they get to grips with Tusker’s diagnosis with young-onset dementia, its title nevertheless hints at the huge existential war the two are waging to preserve their love as illness threatens to tear them apart. Its two central performances from stars Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci eschew declarative moments of grandstanding dialogue in favor of quieter moments of painful reflection, and yet it still promises to ensconce both performers firmly into this year’s awards conversation for the power of its emotional gut punch.

Twenty of Europe’s up-and-coming producers are going to Cannes with European Film Promotion. The organization unveiled its latest roster of Producers on the Move on Wednesday, a lineup that features France’s Gregoire Debailly, who produced Jean-Bernard Marlin’s “Sheherazade,” which premiered in Critics’ Week in Cannes last year, and Ireland’s Cormac Fox, who produced Sophie Hyde’s “Animals.”
Other names include “Borg vs. McEnroe” producer Jon Nohrstedt and, from the U.K., Emily Morgan, whose credits include the critically acclaimed “I Am Not a Witch.”
Efp has been putting selected enterprising producers in the spotlight for 20 years, a period in which 400 have featured. The European Union’s Creative Europe – Media Program backs the initiative, which sees the selected producers take part in networking and production-skewed events.

Yesterday afternoon, the British Academy more or less set the stage for Oscar, as the BAFTA awards were given out. With that final precursor, voting for the Academy Awards will begin tomorrow, and that’s where decisions will actually be made. Academy members will have BAFTA results in their back pocket, and they could loom large. If so, that may be a very good sign for Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The British voters had a number of hometown favorites to choose from, and went with that one, instead of contenders like Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk (a bit surprisingly, though I had predicted it to come up just short) and Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour. Below you will be able to see what BAFTA did in full, but they clearly were big fans of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. It took home five prizes, including the top one of Best Film.

As ever, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts nominations for the Ee British Academy Film Awards favor homegrown fare. Thus many nomination slots that might have included such Hollywood films as “The Post” or “Wonder Woman” went to the likes of “Dunkirk,””Darkest Hour,” and “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool.”
Leading the BAFTA nominations field was Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” with 12 nominations. But the Mexican filmmaker wound up taking home Best Director and the film won Production Design and Score. With wins at the Critics Choice, Golden Globe, Directors Guild and BAFTA, the directing Oscar is Del Toro’s to lose.
“Darkest Hour” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” followed with nine nominations each; “Darkest Hour” settled for wins for Best Actor Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill and Best Hair and Makeup, while “Three Billboards” dominated the night with five wins: Best Picture,...

In the wee hours of the morning, the British Academy announced their BAFTA nominations, putting into place yet another major Oscar precursor. This voting block, known as the British vote, does hold some sway with the Academy. At the Academy Awards, they represent a solid portion of membership, so while SAG will always be the largest delegation, this one isn’t too far behind. That makes it a precursor worth taking note of. Obviously, as you’ll see below, there are some release date oddities that push some films from last year into this year, and of course exclude some of this year’s contenders until next year. That’s just how it goes with BAFTA… Leading the way was The Shape of Water with a dozen nominations, far ahead of any other film. Those 12 citations set the pace, while next in line were Darkest Hour and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing,...

The 2018 awards season has well and truly begun. Over the weekend the Hollywood Foreign Press Association threw out their Golden Globes in a politically charged ceremony which was as much of a comment on the biggest stories from the industry last year as any gold statue handed out. Today the awards spotlight swings over to the UK as BAFTA, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, announced the nominations for their 2018 Film Awards ceremony.
As in previous years the British Academy will endeavour to be seen as more than just another stepping stone to the Oscars. While there are a number of British-specific awards handed out on the night, the expectation is that homegrown productions will be high on the list of nominees. The 2018 BAFTA Film Awards will be handed out in a ceremony in London on the 18th of February of this year.

Ten film projects, including features from Doctor Who director Euros Lyn and Borrowed Time producer Olivier Kaempfer, have been selected to progress to the first round of the Film Agency for Wales’ low budget film scheme.
The teams behind these projects will now participate in a training and mentoring programme supported by Creative Skillset’s Film Skills Fund, which is funded by the National Lottery via the BFI, and through the Skills Investment Fund (Sif).
The Film Agency for Wales devised and developed Cinematic in partnership with the BFI Film Fund, BBC Films, S4C and Soda Pictures to support emerging filmmaking talent from Wales in making “contemporary, dynamic and distinctive feature films” with budgets of around £300,000 ($480,000).
A total of 56 applications were made to the programme following its launch in June. The ten projects and their filmmaking teams selected to continue with the programme are:
