Carrie Coon couldn’t tease much about The Gilded Age Season 3, but she had one particular group of people to thank for keeping the show going.

During an interview for The White Lotus Season 3 premiere, Coon thanked “the gays” for their support in renewing the Julian Fellowes-created drama.

“The gays saved it,” Coon joked with Entertainment Tonight. “Thank you, right now, you saved it. We would not have a season three without you.”

The Gilded Age was renewed for a third season days after Season 2 concluded in December 2023, following solid ratings for the period drama. According to HBO, total premiere-night viewing for the season grew for six consecutive weeks, culminating in a series high for the Season 2 finale.

Fool Me Once is the story of military helicopter pilot Maya Stern, a captain who loses her career in a scandal and suffers two bereavements in short succession. It’s fast-paced, kind of ridiculous viewing that takes you down an extremely twisty path before tying everything up in a big not-exactly-watertight-but-it’ll-do-fine knot – which makes it pretty perfect viewing for a brain-fogged New Year’s Day after all of December’s indulgences.

Idris Elba is the main attraction in this thriller that mixes James Bond with serial killers and gruesome crimes: without being a great movie, it has a little bit of everything to entertain you on a Friday night and delight horror thriller lovers.

It doesn’t always work, but it knows how to correctly apply the rules of the genre and borrow ideas from other referential films. The ideas worked before, they work now, even if everything is blatantly “familiar” and the bad guy is not exactly Hannibal Lecter.

It has its charm, its BBC-like “British” photography and perhaps precisely because of that, it sometimes tends to drift over to the made-for-tv film side of the road, with some “easy” and not very elaborated sequences.

Feature incarnation of the Idris Elba cop drama sees a ropey but savage snuff-porn plot get too much explicit attention

Neil Cross’s smash-hit BBC TV crime drama now gets its own standalone feature film, with Idris Elba returning as the troubled London police officer John Luther, effectively continuing the story from the end of the fifth season. This may well play very effectively to the show’s fanbase and there’s certainly an alpha supporting cast including Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis and Hattie Morahan.

But I have to say – and those squeamish about spoilers and cliches had better look away now – that without the extended context of longform TV, the greater emphasis on explicit, violent horror is a bit exhausting. The serial-killer accessories feel hand-me-down; the Scandi noir touch is spurious and storylines in the movies about evil criminal plans to livestream snuff-porn are frankly always lame and implausible.

Author Harlan Coben is back at Netflix with his fifth novel adaptation, as the streamer takes on “Fool Me Once” with a limited thriller series starring Michelle Keegan, Richard Armitage and Joanna Lumley.

The New York Times bestselling writer re-upped his deal with Netflix in October, with the multimillion dollar pact giving the streamer access to his more than two dozen titles. Longtime collaborators Danny Brocklehurst, Nicola Shindler and Richard Fee will executive produce along with Coben.

“Fool Me Once” follows Maya Stern (Keegan), a woman who is trying to come to terms with the brutal murder of her husband Joe (Armitage). But when Maya installs a nanny-cam to keep an eye on her young daughter, she is shocked to see a man she recognizes in her house — her husband.

“Avatar 2: The Way of Water” star Jamie Flatters looks unrecognizable in stills from his upcoming indie feature “Black Dog,” revealed here exclusively by Variety.

Shedding his blue CG ensemble, Flatters, who plays Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington’s eldest Na’avi son in James Cameron’s billion-dollar smash, reverts to type in “Black Dog” as a London teenager taking a road trip up North.

Independent Entertainment has boarded and will handle international sales on UK feature Black Dog, which brings together two of Screen’s 2022 Stars of Tomorrow, director George Jaques and writer-actor Jamie Flatters.

Black Dog, which wraps principal photography this week, is directed by Jaques who also wrote the script with Flatters, with Flatters starring alongside Keenan Munn-Francis, who is making his feature debut.

WarnerMedia has denied that owner At&T is considering selling the European arm of HBO. This comes after a report in the Financial Times this morning.

WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey has put his name to the on-the-record denial, an unusual move for a major media company. The newspaper had claimed that At&T had held internal discussions about a sale of HBO Europe to help pay down its debt.

“We normally do not comment on speculation, but when a news outlet is advised that their reporting is factually incorrect and report it anyway, we feel compelled to set the record straight,” said Stankey. “There is no truth whatsoever to the Financial Times’ story saying At&T is or has considered selling HBO Europe. It’s completely baseless and inaccurate. HBO Europe is a valuable asset for our growth plans in Europe.”

Hattie Morahan, star of Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast and Arrow star David Nykl are to front The Sleepers, a spy drama for HBO Europe.

The pair are joining Tatiana Pauhofová (Burning Bush) in the six-part drama, which was previously known as Oblivious. The series, which is set in 1980s Prague, has started production in the Czech capital with additional filming in London.

It was written by newcomer Ondřej Gabriel, who studied political science at Prague’s Charles University before becoming a playwright, and directed by Ivan Zacharias, the Czech filmmaker behind HBO Europe’s Wasteland.

Pauhofová plays Marie, who fled Communist Czechoslovakia with her political dissident husband Viktor. Now it is 1989, change is in the air and they take advantage of an amnesty to return to their home country. “Arrow” actor David Nykl will star in “The Sleepers,” HBO Europe’s Czech spy drama, which has just gone into production. Nykl, who plays Anatoly Knyazev in The CW superhero series, will be joined by Hattie Morahan (“Beauty and the Beast”) in the HBO show.

Tatiana Pauhofová, who was in HBO Europe’s Agnieszka Holland series “Burning Bush,” was already announced as a cast member of “The Sleepers,” which was previously known as “Oblivious.”

Shooting is underway in Prague, and additional filming will take place in London. The series is ostensibly set in late-1980s Prague against a backdrop of political unrest. Marie (Pauhofova) and her dissident husband, Viktor, fled Communist Czechoslovakia, but with change in the air, they return home. Viktor then disappears. Disney's Beauty and the Beast is already one of the year's biggest hits, becoming the first $1 billion movie at the global box office. As of now, we haven't heard anything about a potential sequel, but given its enormous success, it wouldn't be surprising if a sequel eventually happens. When that day does come, it seems Dan Stevens will be ready to return as the Beast, according to comments the actor made over the weekend.

Variety caught up with Dan Stevens at the Tribecc Film Festival, where the actor debuted his new sex comedy entitled Permission. The actor was asked if he would consider returning as The Beast, and the actor replied that he's open to whatever offers may come his way regarding a return to this magical world. Here's what the actor had to say during the Tribecca Film Festival below.

As expected, Disney's long-awaited live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast struck a powerful chord with moviegoers everywhere, to the tune of a record-breaking opening weekend of $174.7 million, the highest ever for the month of March, easily breaking the record set last year by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. In almost every instance of a blockbuster success of this caliber, the movie's respective studios will often announce and/or confirm plans for a sequel on Monday, to capitalize on the momentum of their hit. That didn't happen yesterday though at Disney, with the studio's production president Sean Bailey confirming in a new interview that there will not be a sequel to Beauty and the Beast, although there may be prequels and/or spin-offs.

As we got closer and closer to the release, the projections started to increase, with some predicting it could earn upwards of $150 million, which would still put it just short of the all-time highest March opening, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice's $166.1 million tally last year. It seems Beauty and the Beast has outdone itself, besting all projections for a record-breaking $170 million box office estimate.

Disney itself was downplaying those projections, with their own internal estimates placing their debut at $100 million. Box Office Mojo reports that Beauty and the Beast debuted in 4,210 theaters, earning an impressive $40,380 per-screen average. This year, Disney's Beauty and the Beast could very well vie for that record, but while it will easily come out on top this weekend, we're predicting this live-action fairy tale adaptation will arrive just short of the record, with $139.7 million.

There’s something interesting about seeing the cinema of your youth get redone. Maybe it’s just doubly weird for me today, considering it’s my birthday (Happy Birthday to me as I turn the dreaded age of 30). For the past few years, Disney has made essentially a cottage industry out of redoing some of their classic back catalogue. In many cases, it has been live action versions of a beloved animated flick. This week, they have a new film of that ilk hitting theaters in Beauty and the Beast. It’s a bold move, especially considering that animated movie is an undisputed all timer and the first cartoon ever nominated for Best Picture, still one of only three to this day, with its nomination being the only one while in a field of just five. That does put some pressure on this one to live up to its namesake.
