Hysteria, directed by German filmmaker Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay, has been named Best European Film in the Panorama section at the Berlin International Film Festival. The film received the Europa Cinemas Label, granting it additional promotional support and incentives for theaters to feature it in their programming.

The jury described Hysteria as a tightly constructed conspiracy thriller with unexpected developments leading to a tense final sequence. They noted its ability to spark discussion on pressing social issues while keeping audiences engaged.

The jury panel consisted of Klaudia Elsässer, David Kelly, Constanze Oedl, and Cenk Sezgin.

Thriller with Political Undertones

Written and directed by Büyükatalay, Hysteria follows a story that explores paranoia and manipulation in contemporary society. The film is a production of Filmfaust, with Pluto Films handling international sales.

The film, which has received rave reviews, unfolds against the backdrop of a film shoot which is thrown into disarray when a burned Quran is found on film set.

A young intern is caught in the crossfire and drawn into a dangerous game of secrets, accusations and lies.

Hysteria will now benefit from promotional support from Europa Cinemas and better exhibition thanks to a financial incentive for network cinemas to include it in their programme schedule.

The jury comprised Klaudia Elsässer (Art+ Cinema, Budapest, Hungary), David Kelly (Light House Cinema, Dublin, Ireland), Constanze Oedl (Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus, Vienna, Austria) and Cenk Sezgin (Cinemarine Cinemas, Bodrum, Turkey).

In “Hysteria” (2025), director Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay uses the real-life racist burning down of an immigrant flat in Solingen to unleash a gamut of inquiries into divides between the white prototype and the Other. What are the anxieties, and the unease running in between? The director funnels them through a film being mounted on the incident, and the incident is re-staged in a scene.

“Hysteria” opens with the arson scene. A slick shift of perspective, from the footage to behind-the-scenes devising, sets things rolling. Elif (Devrim Lingnau), a fresh university graduate roped in as a second Ad on the film, drives the viewer’s entry into the drama. What triggers the central plot is the paranoia stemming from a copy of the Quran getting burnt in the arson re-enactment. Exclusive: Ilker Çatak, whose The Teachers’ Lounge was nominated for an Oscar as Germany’s International Feature Film submission, completed shooting his new film Yellow Letters in Hamburg on Wednesday night, the production’s producer Ingo Fliess has revealed to Deadline.

Yellow Letters was filmed under strict security precautions because of what Fliess referred to as the film’s cultural and political “sensitive nature,” adding that “I want to protect my actors and crew, and I want to protect our working situation.”

But now with the film being shot and everyone leaving town today [Thursday], “I think we can just open the doors a bit wider,” Fliess said during a break from the Hamburg studio set. The film also shot in locations in the surrounding area, and briefly in Berlin.

Filming began in Berlin in the last week of May. Fliess said that Yellow Letters is about “a marriage under pressure.

Fred M. Wilcox's 1956 sci-fi classic "Forbidden Planet" was a notably opulent affair, at least as sci-fi films go. Its budget at the time was only $1.96 million (which shakes out to about $22 million today) comparatively small to the historical epics Hollywood was overspending on at the time; "The Ten Commandments," for instance, cost a whopping $13 million, while 1956's Best Picture winner, "Around the World in 80 Days" cost about $6 million. "Forbidden Planet" was a production on par with 1953's "War of the Worlds," a colorful, large-scale production infused with fantastical spacecraft and weird robots. Robby (voiced by Marvin Miller), the robot featured in "Forbidden Planet," reportedly cost $125,000 to make — about a million in today's dollars.

There have been plenty of films set in the classroom over the years, from Goodbye, Mr Chips to The Dead Poets Society, not to mention female-led films such as Mona Lisa Smile or Dangerous Minds. In all the above, the teacher is the hero of the piece. In German director Ilker Çatak’s The Teachers’ Lounge, however, the teacher is far from being a hero, despite her good and honourable intentions.

The film opens with the camera following maths teacher Carla Nowak (Leonie Benesch) as she strides purposefully into school and makes her way to the teachers’ lounge before heading to class. Before the film has even got going or a line has been spoken, Çatak alerts his audience to the fact that this film is no School of Rock. Thanks to Marvin Miller’s truly disturbing score, the tone is set for a psychological thriller that will set the nerves on edge.

In a penetrating essay on the life and work of Salvador Dalí, George Orwell observed the following about intellectual ambition: “It seems to be, if not the rule, at any rate distinctly common for an intellectual bent to be accompanied by a non-rational, even childish urge in the same direction.” Orwell was thinking mainly of artists and scientists, but I am sure he would have agreed that the same is true of politicians––that urges to hold office and curry favor with the crowd are often more explicable in terms of childish fancies of kings and courts than they are in terms of highbrow things like duty and virtue.

Slow, the second feature from Lithuanian filmmaker Marija Kavtaradze, has won the Crystal Arrow at the 15th edition of Les Arcs Film Festival in France.

The romantic drama receives a €20,000 digital promotional campaign for its release; Be For Films handles sales on the title, with Tandem distributing the film in France on March 6, 2024.

It was easy enough to get made, said German director Ilker Çatak over coffee at the Toronto International Film Festival. He came up with the idea and co-wrote low-budget indie “The Teacher’s Lounge” with his old school-mate Johannes Duncker. “We wanted to make a movie about a young teacher who gets into trouble,” said Çatak. “Education is a topic that everybody has a relationship with. So whether you’ve been in school, or you have kids in school, it’s a universal thing.”

Inspired by a true incident from their school days, the writers set the entire movie inside the school, cutting out the backstory of the idealistic young teacher, Carla (Leonie Benesch). “We eliminated the whole exposition, and jumped right into the action,” said .Çatak. “And another key was to just have it take place in one place. And to restrict ourselves on all kinds of levels: in the screenplay,...

The title might suggest somewhere to relax but there’s barely room to breathe in Ilker Çatak’s German school-set drama which thrums from start to almost finish with the sweaty tension of a looming maths test. At its heart - and following a quickening beat, heightened by the plucked strings of Marvin Miller’s insistent score - is new teacher Carla Nowack (Leonie Benesch).

Nowack takes the kids for maths and Pe but she soon finds it's the school ethics - and maybe even her own - that don’t add up. Çatak and his co-writer Johannes Duncker present the world within the school as a distilled microcosm of what lies outside it, complete with all its adult prejudices - joining a recent cohort of films on a similar subject, including 1982, Playground and Blue Jean. The first signs of conflict brew over a series of thefts. The school’s zero tolerance policy comes into.

It might have been a few decades since you left school. You might imagine the modern classroom — especially one in a decently funded, mid-sized German high school — to be as alien to your own educational background as to be unrecognizable. And yet one of the remarkable aspects of İlker Çatak’s highly effective, slow-cooker drama is a strangely specific familiarity. It delivers you directly into a sense memory of chalk dust and boredom, of fidgeting at your desk and gazing longingly through big windows that seem tauntingly designed for exactly that purpose. “The Teachers’ Lounge” is about a lot of things — conformity, rebellion, racism, optics, intergenerational mistrust — but it is also a stark reminder, from both the teacher and the student side, of what school actually was for so many of us: our first and most foundational experience of institutionalization.

This grouping of Bogart’s Columbia output has one bona fide noir, a pair of exotic ‘romantic intrigue’ thrillers and three social issue pictures. It’s a good set, with films directed by John Cromwell, Nicholas Ray and Mark Robson, and with leading ladies Lizabeth Scott, Florence Marley, Marta Toren, Jody Lawrance and Jan Sterling. On paper, the plight of a pair of families fleeing 1979’s East Germany in a hot air balloon sounds like fabricated fodder for a spy novel. But as implausible as it sounds, this “The Mysterious Island”-esque grand escape from Deutschland’s then walled-in, oppressive slice really did happen. And nearly four decades after being the subject of Disney’s “Night Crossing,” it is now a tale told in small-screen comedian Michael Bully Herbig’s “Balloon,” a competently made political thriller that sadly mines for suspense in all the wrong places.

Still, “Balloon” is decent entertainment to a degree, and that is mostly thanks to its handsome production values. The quaint environs and row houses of Thuringia as well as the era’s eye-popping costumes by Lisy Christl — well-tailored clothes and floral-heavy fabrics with traces of ’70s cool — are admittedly easy on the eyes. Verily, Blu-ray 3-D is better than most theatrical 3-D! Paramount’s fourth and last 3-D production went out to theaters only in 2-D, so for all practical terms this Kino/3D Archive restoration is a depth-format premiere. Expect a kissing scene or two: lusty Fernando (¿Quién es más macho?) Lamas and demure Rhonda Fleming succumb to the sweaty allure of the tropics. He pushes the sex appeal more than she does! Together they take a 3-D trek to where the headhunters roam, into a jungle to secure a golden treasure.

It’s night and a ship moves in the water through a dark curtain of fog. We see George Raft as Captain Johnny Angel on the bridge peering out into the pea soup as another vessel looms ahead suddenly in the darkness, abandoned and drifting in the water. The Tribeca Film Festival (Tff), presented by American Express, today announced its feature film selections in the Spotlight and Cinemania sections, as well as Special Screenings and the Tribeca/Espn Sports Film Festival lineup. The 11th edition of the Festival will take place from April 18 to April 29 in New York City.

The Spotlight section screens 34 films, 22 narratives and 12 documentaries that demonstrate the breadth of films at the Tribeca Film Festival. Nineteen films in the selection will have their world premieres at the Festival. The Cinemania section offers a largely international assortment of seven thrilling narrative films.

The Guy Hanks/Marvin Miller Screenwriting Program established by Bill Cosby and his wife Camille, and now currently in it’s 17th year, will be accepting applications from July 15th to September 15th.

The program, which was created in association with the University of Southern California School of Cinema, is designed to develop and enhance the pool of black screenwriters in the film industry.
