Isn’t it hoot how a show about the most unassuming of jobs—a paper company, no less—could become a touchstone of popular culture? As we sit here pondering its profound impact, we can’t help but recall Jim Halpert’s poignant line in The Office: “Everything I have I owe to this job—this stupid, wonderful, boring, amazing job.”
Ah, the irony! That’s the sweet spot that makes this NBC classic more than just a comedy—it’s a masterclass in paradox. It captured the beauty of life’s dullest routines, where we see ourselves reflected in the quirky, often maddening characters who spend their days at Dunder Mifflin or Wernham Hogg.

Twenty years ago, NBC premiered a new sitcom based on a hit U.K. series. The Office debuted on March 24, 2005, and was not an immediate hit in its initial six-episode run. The show struggled to find its footing out of the block, with several episodes virtually xeroxed from the storylines of its British predecessor created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant and transplanted, often clunkily, to Scranton, Pa. But soon enough showrunner Greg Daniels found his groove and leaned into the strengths of his formidable ensemble, led by Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, and Rainn Wilson.
The Office would go on to become a must-see TV staple, running nine seasons and earning five Emmys in 42 nominations — and then becoming a hit all over again as a new generation rediscovered and binged The Office when it hit streaming. Until 2023, The Office held the record as most-streamed series, with more than 57 billion minutes watched.

On March 24, 2005, NBC aired the first episode of The Office, an American remake of the universally acclaimed, Golden Globe-winning BBC comedy of the same name. The premiere, a mockumentary that introduced the staff of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company’s branch in Scranton, Pennsylvania, pulled in a decent-sized audience that night. It drew 11.2 million viewers following an episode of The Apprentice — but even with that start, expectations for the show were not high.
NBC had produced a pilot for The Office, written by King of the Hill co-creator Greg Daniels, in early 2004, just after Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s BBC show won the Golden Globe for best comedy and Gervais took home the award for best actor in a comedy. The network ordered the show to series that spring but picked up only five more episodes. After premiering on a Thursday, the remaining episodes ran on Tuesday nights, where it struggled.

The Office debuted on NBC 20 years ago on March 24th, 2005, and American television hasn’t been the same ever since. While it may have been inspired by the British version from creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, The Office has certainly made its mark as it continues to entertain viewers decades after it premiered. But what was the experience like behind the scenes? Former star Craig Robinson got candid about his audition story with TV Insider in-studio as he reflected on his process. NBC / Peacock “I got the audition through my agent manager and… there were like 12 people in the room and Greg Daniels, who adapted The Office for American television,” Robinson recalls, painting a picture of the day. “He was at the head, of the group,” Robinson adds, “And at the time I had a video out with Jerry Minor and this video was called ‘Somebody’s F***ing...

More than a decade later, the American remake of "The Office" endures thanks to its popularity on streaming services, the vast amount of memes and GIFs from the show you can find, and the upcoming spin-off about a Midwestern newspaper set in the world of the show and featuring (at least) Oscar Nunez as his character from Dunder-Mifflin Scranton. Add to that the "Office Ladies" podcast, hosted by Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, and the idea of people within the show having preferred episodes makes a lot of sense. Although some people can debate the quality of the show's final two seasons, it's at least safe to say that when Steve Carell departed near the end of its seventh season to pursue his film career and leave the star-making role of Michael Scott behind, the show changed quite a lot.

This week marks the 20th anniversary of The Office, the groundbreaking NBC sitcom that redefined workplace comedy and launched the careers of several cast members. Since the show’s debut on March 24, 2005, many of its stars have gone on to successful careers in television and film, earning critical acclaim and industry recognition — but the ensemble surprisingly did not have the greatest success when it came to Emmy Awards.
Leading man Steve Carell starred as Michael Scott, the endearingly incompetent regional manager of the Scranton branch of paper company Dunder Mifflin. He received six Emmy nominations for Best Comedy Actor during his time on The Office and four Best Comedy Series nominations as part of the show’s creative team, which included creator Greg Daniels, who developed the series from the original U.K. version created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. So far, there is only one character who appears in every season of The White Lotus — Greg, who is now going by Gary in Season 3. We know Greg as the scheming and downright murderous former husband to the beloved Tanya McQuoid (the legendary Jennifer Coolidge). In Season 1, he weaseled his way into her heart. In Season 2, he bailed on her in Italy but secretly arranged for her murder. In Season 3, we find him living in Thailand at a house near the White Lotus resort, dating a "model" (the delightful Charlotte Le Bon). When another character from Season 1, Tanya's potential business partner Belinda (the hilarious Natasha Rothwell), shows up at the Thailand White Lotus resort and recognizes Greg, she begins to fear for her own life.
Greg/Gary is a scary jerk, probably the most explicitly villainous character in Mike White's show, but he's played by an extremely funny man — Jon Gries.

Brian Baumgartner was a beloved part of NBC's The Office, portraying the fan-favorite character of Kevin Malone. Despite the character remaining popular with fans a decade after the show's conclusion, Baumgartner isn't sure if Kevin will appear in the forthcoming spinoff series.
Speaking with Screen Rant to discuss his recent appearance on Suits LA, in which he wanted lawyer Erica Rollins to "kill Kevin Malone," Baumgartner addressed a possible return to The Office universe for the spinoffnow that it's been confirmed that his former co-star Oscar Nunez will be back as Oscar Martínez. "Uh, That's interesting... I don't know what the rules are there in the new show, or where Greg [Daniels] sees Kevin," the actor stated. "I hope Kevin's still working at the bar right around the corner from Dunder Mifflin. I hope he's still there, so I don't know about a trip to the Midwest, or who...

When the U.S. version of The Office premiered on NBC 20 years ago, the reaction was rather muted, to put it charitably. The shadow of the original U.K. series created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant loomed very large, and the NBC pilot was almost a shot-for-shot remake of their first episode, with Steve Carell taking over the lead role from Gervais. “The insurmountable problem for this version may prove to be Carell himself,” wrote USA Today. “He’s an amusing sketch comic, but he comes across as an actor doing a bit,...

The Office is a mockumentary that documents the lives of office workers at Wernham Hogg. Who'd have thought a Clint Eastwood movie would have inspired part of the storyline? The series was first made in 2001 by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, and became a key component to the creators' and actors' careers. The show won a Golden Globe Award for Best Television series: Musical or Comedy. The core plot line focuses on David Brent's desperate need to be popular, whilst other subplots often take center stage. Tim and Dawn's friendship-turned-romance being one of them and one of the best at that.
The two characters had undeniable chemistry. When audiences meet them, they've already built a strong friendship.

The Office remains one of the most successful shows in TV history. The series ran for nine seasons, started careers for actors like Steve Carell and John Krasinski, and popularized the mockumentary style of sitcoms. It even achieved a record for most streamed minutes in a year in 2020 with viewers watching for 57.1 billion minutes, only to be toppled by Suits three years later.
It came as no surprise then when Peacock, where the series currently resides, announced a sequel to The Office. The upcoming show, titled The Paper, won't exactly be a direct sequel, moving away from the paper-selling offices of Dunder Mifflin with brand-new characters. However, there are plenty of reasons for fans to be excited, with beloved The Office characters returning and The Paper retaining the humor that made the original series so memorable.

The connection between The Office and its follow-up series at Peacock has become more concrete.
Oscar Nuñez, who played accountant Oscar Martinez throughout The Office’s run, will reprise his character in the Peacock series. Like its predecessor, the show is a mockumentary in which the documentary crew that filmed at Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch for years takes on a new project, following the publisher and staff of a historic but struggling Midwestern newspaper.
When The Office ended in 2013, Nuñez’s character was running for a state Senate seat in Pennsylvania while continuing to work at Dunder Mifflin. Details of how Oscar fits into the new series are being kept quiet for now — though Nuñez has been involved from the start (his casting was first reported by The Insneider newsletter). Oscar Nuñez will reprise his The Office role of “Oscar Martinez” in the Peacock follow up series known as Untitled Greg Daniels/Michael Koman Project, Deadline has confirmed.

Oscar Nuñez will return as Oscar Martinez in Peacock’s follow-up series to “The Office,” Variety has confirmed.
Sources say Nuñez will not be the central character in the upcoming mockumentary sitcom — which takes place in the same universe as “The Office” — as it is an ensemble series. But he is part of the show’s character mix, and has been in the opening script from the beginning.
There are no further details regarding Oscar’s role or storyline in the new show, which Greg Daniels is creating and executive producing with Michael Korman (“Nathan For You”).

The British mockumentary sitcom The Office remains one of the most influential comedies ever produced. Not only did the series enjoy a stellar three-season run which culminated in an 8.5 IMDb rating, it also inspired a range of spinoffs, including the Steve Carrell version.
Though it only lasted for two seasons (2001–2003), the show catapulted its cast to stardom, and produced a range of superstars. Over two decades later, let’s take a look at where the actors are in 2025.

Cards on the table, I love David Brent and Michael Scott. Both UK and US versions of The Office were led by iconic sitcom characters, written and acted to a standard that few others can achieve. So, when I say that either one isn't particularly nice at some points, that doesn't mean I think they're badly created characters. In reality, I think their downsides make them relatable and more human. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's UK series was the original and it reinvented the mockumentary genre, thrusting the mundane, everyday work life into the spotlight to make it something extraordinary. Although I was too young to watch when it first came out, I've heard other people say that watching the show upon its release was baffling.

Warwick Davis, the British actor who has played various roles in the Star Wars franchise, got a tribute from Luke Skywalker himself as he was garlanded with BAFTA’s highest honor.
Mark Hamill described Davis as “one of the hardest working men in showbusiness” as he received the Fellowship prize at the BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday.
Hamill joked that Davis has more Star Wars credits than himself and that he followed up the mega-franchise with another in the shape of Harry Potter.
Davis was celebrated by BAFTA for his prolific career and role in creating a more inclusive screen industry. George Lucas was among others who paid tribute to Davis, saying he was a “great actor.”
An emotional Davis, who unexpectedly lost his wife last year, thanked his loved ones — including his children — for helping him learn to “laugh and love again.” He joked: “This is one of the...

Growing up in England, I have a very distinct memory of when "The Office" first debuted on the BBC. My dad saw it first and loved it, not only because it was undeniably hilarious, but because he said he knew two or three guys from his own office that acted almost exactly like Ricky Gervais' David Brent. As a recovering office administrator myself, I could also see that Gervais and co-creator Stephen Merchant had absolutely nailed the quietly oppressive fluorescent hellscape of the modern office, and populated it with characters that felt like perfect analogues for every colleague I'd ever had.
As such, the show felt like a hinge moment in TV history. It was a new form of comedy that recognized the inherent absurdity in modern life, and let its humor arise from simply allowing its characters to be themselves. It was so startlingly accurate in its depiction of...

Walking Dead spin-off Daryl Dixon focuses on fan favourites Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) as they trek across a zombie-infested Europe, trying to get back home to the USA. While the first two seasons were set in France, the third season will move matters to England and Spain, and began filming this summer. The French cast is being left behind and a new Spanish supporting cast brought on. One of the people Daryl and Carol will encounter in the British isles is played by English comedy writer and actor Stephen Merchant.
Merchant, who co-created and co-starred in the original British comedy series The Office, was revealed to be part of the cast at the end of September, and posted about his excitement on Instagram. “As a fan of ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’, I was excited when they asked me to join the Wd universe for season 3. Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña, Jesse Eisenberg, Joe Alwyn, Isabella Rossellini, Colman Domingo and Ralph Fiennes are among the presenters set for the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards.
Notably missing from the attendees list was Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón, whose awards campaign has catastrophically imploded following the discovery of controversial posts made on her X (previously Twitter) account. The star — the first trans actor to be nominated for an Oscar — has apologized, though tensions are said to be high between Gascón and streamer Netflix for hindering the film’s Oscar hopes. She has now been phased out of its awards campaign entirely.

Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón is not expected among the attendees for the BAFTA Film Awards after her racially insensitive X/Twitter posts were uncovered.
Gascón is nominated for Leading Actress at the BAFTAs but is not on a guest list for the night, suggesting that the transgender Spanish performer will skip Sunday’s ceremony. She was the first openly trans actress to be nominated for a BAFTA Film Award.
Gascón has already missed the Critics Choice Awards, PGA Awards, and the Goya Awards, but the BAFTAs is arguably the highest-profile event she will not attend. Netflix and her reps did not respond to requests for comment.
Other Emilia Pérez nominees, including Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez (both competing for Supporting Actress), are expected to be in London for the Royal Festival Hall event. Saldaña and Gomez will also present a prize.

Guest stars have always been integral to sitcoms, and while some tend to outstay their welcome, the opposite was the case with one of the most underrated guest stars on Chuck Lorre’s The Big Bang Theory. Among the many high-profile cameos in the sitcom, Stephen Merchant’s Dave Gibbs fit pretty well with the series’ tone.
Stephen Merchant as Dave | Credit: CBS
Unfortunately, the sitcom moved on too early from his character, which is a shame, as his dynamic with Amy and Sheldon was impeccable, to say the least, and Merchant’s acting chops were the cherry on top.

Sadie Sink is now a front-runner to play Jean Grey in an X-Men reboot movie in the MCU. Marvel first teased an X-Men reboot following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. More updates came recently as X-Men characters began appearing in several MCU films. While some fans are excited about the actress in the role, others harbor concerns regarding her age.

Many believe that Sink is too young to play Jean in the films. Earlier versions of the character in the Fox Universe were played by Famke Janssen and Sophie Turner. Sink looks younger than both these actresses, leading us to believe that Marvel might go for a story featuring much younger mutants.

A number of cameos were made on The Office, but there's one that shouldn't have been revealed to the public before the episode aired. The show, which first came to TV in 2005, is graced with a large cast of core characters, all of whom are necessary to the plot. Unlike its two-seasoned predecessor, The Office had plenty of time to dive into the lives of Michael, Jim, Pam, Dwight and Angela, to name but a few. Each character had his or her place, and, as such, the series has remained one of the best sitcoms throughout the 20 years it's been around. Numerous awards nominations were secured, including Steve Carell winning Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes in 2006 for his leading role as Michael Scott. A lot of viewers were aware of the UK show of the same name that came first.

Robert De Niro stars in the Netflix political thriller series Zero Day, and that’s going to debut this year. Here’s the trailer.
Over his extraordinary career, Robert De Niro has only appeared sporadically on the small screen. Perhaps most memorably, he appeared in a cameo at the end of series two of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s Extras. He also played politician Bernie Madoff in the HBO television film The Wizard Of Lies, appeared on Sesame Street and thus far has hosted Saturday Night Live three times.
He now leads Netlix thriller series Zero Day.
The synopsis reads as follows:
Netflix’s Zero Day is a limited thriller series starring Robert De Niro as respected former U.S. President George Mullen, who, as head of the Zero Day Commission, is charged with finding the perpetrators of a devastating cyber attack that has caused chaos around the country and many fatalities.

How can any of us define what the best of all time is? For some people, thinking about the best TV show or film of all time is akin to asking them what their favorite within the respective medium is. But to say that something is your favorite film or TV show is not automatically the same as deeming it the best. For some, to be the best means that you have to be influential or that the end result has to have some grand statement attached. And more importantly, if the question "What is the best of all time?" is being asked, do we ask ourselves or do we rely on outside sources?
The voice of the critic is important, but it can also be ignored if a critic doesn't like a show or film the way that we do, or if they just flat-out hate something we adore.

Just this past spring, BBC’s riveting The Outlaws released what’s being unofficially considered its final season, as series creator and seasoned funnyman Stephen Merchant voiced an overwhelming sense of burnout after wrapping the latest installment. But even after three seasons, the series is totally underappreciated. With a diverse cast of strong actors, believable new dilemmas from episode to episode, and adorable moments of bonding between a bunch of low-grade criminals, this series has plenty to offer. Not to mention the likes of acting veterans Christopher Walken and Richard E. Grant gracing the series with their renowned versatility as well.

The Office UK aired in 2001 on BBC and inspired the US version. Created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the show ran for two seasons plus a Christmas special to provide some closure for the characters—namely Dawn and Tim. The mockumentary followed David Brent and the employees of the Wernom Hog paper company.

In stark contrast to its later seasons, the first entry in The Office's nine-year run only boasted six episodes. Based off the original British series, the celebrated American version outruns Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's original series in episode count by the end of its second installment. Despite that, The Office's first season is exceptionally shorter than its counterparts. While the British series established the mockumentary format, the American version refined the series, which caused some significant differences between The Office UK and US versions.
Across its nine seasons, The Office consisted of 201 episodes. The first seven series were led by Steve Carell, whose departure from the show indefinitely left a mark on the show's legacy. Of course, adapting a series to a new global audience raises significant challenges, but Greg Daniels expertly navigates the world of Dunder Mifflin and creates some of the most beloved characters on television.

The early 2000s had an abundance of successful comedy TV shows. The Office, The It Crowd and Arrested Development were in full swing, alongside 2005's Extras. Written by and starring Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the series had a unique plot line that centered around the lives of two film and TV extras, Maggie (Ashley Jensen) and Andy (Gervais). Andy's incompetent agent, Darren Lamb (Merchant), had almost no knowledge of the industry, causing Andy to take matters into his own hands when it came to putting himself out into the acting stratosphere. Andy and Maggie's grounded friendship begins to lose its footing when Andy slowly works his way up the ladder of fame, forgetting where he started from. Like much of Gervais and Merchant's work, the series is the blueprint for tying together comedy and sadness.

Fans of the U.S. version of The Office might feel a little disappointed upon discovering that the U.K. version holds the crown for the best Christmas episode of all time. The Office (U.S.) delivered some great Yuletide episodes that are not-so-surprisingly among the top-rated sitcom Christmas specials. However, Ricky Gervais crafted something truly magical with the series finale of The Office U.K.

Whether we talk about Ricky Gervais’ British iteration or Steve Carell’s American version, The Office has always been a show that has touched the hearts of millions.
