There’s a recurring caution that runs throughout the NetFlix limited series, Mr. McMahon. Director Chris Smith does not belabor the point, but he makes sure viewers are reminded every once in a while that almost all of what we know about the life and career of wrestling mogul Vince McMahon has been carefully curated by McMahon himself.
Consequently, even in a supposed honest examination of the man who more or less invented the concept of “sports entertainment” for the 21st century, it would be wise to question everything.
Fortunately, Chris Smith is up to the task of teasing out various strata of truth. His breakthrough documentary, American Movie (1999), remains among the greatest and most revelatory movies of the 1990s. Smith has gone on to examine the nature of fact and fiction in other projects such as Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond (2017) and Tiger King (2020). The blurring of the...

WWE has been known to be the ultimate creation of former CEO and Chairman Vince McMahon. It turned from a regional promotion into a global juggernaut under the leadership of McMahon. The company took a drastic turn when Vince sold the company to Endeavor, which merged it with UFC to form the new parent company, Tko Group Holdings.
However, McMahon exited the company following allegations by former WWE employee Janel Grant of s*x trafficking and s*xual misconduct. Without McMahon, the company has been thriving under the leadership of Triple H and Nick Khan.

In the nearly forty-year history of WWE's major summer event, Summerslam, one match stands out above the rest as the all-time greatest: Bret Hart vs. his brother Owen at Summerslam 1994. The steel cage match stands as one of the most emotionally resonant bouts in the canon of wrestling though as Bret later admitted in an interview, it had the potential to be even better.
In an interview with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated from 2017, Bret reflected on his feud with Owen, and their groundbreaking Summerslam match, noting that the brothers had originally pitched a ladder match instead. While they initially shied away at the idea of a Steel Cage match, they eventually delivered one of the most iconic performances ever put on inside the cage.
Still, it is worth considering whether the Harts could have topped even that, had they been given unlimited creative freedom to do the match their way.

When Black Adam star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson returned to WWE in January, most fans assumed it would be another one-off appearance from the Brahma Bull.
Those have been the norm in recent years, with it becoming apparent some time ago that he seemingly had no real plans to get back into the ring for a long-discussed match pitting him against cousin Roman Reigns. Given his continued Hollywood success, that wasn't overly surprising and, ultimately, the movie business meant he had neither the time nor inclination to wrestle again.
However, the end of January saw The Rock join the board of Tko Holdings (WWE and UFC's parent company) and regain the rights to his in-ring name. He also quickly returned to TV and took Cody Rhodes' place in his WrestleMania match against Reigns.

Dave Meltzer pointed out this shift in perspective on Wrestling Observer Radio. He noted that Knight’s promo initially generated a lot of buzz. But with The Rock back on the mic, Knight feels like a copycat now.

The WWE has invited a wide spectrum of celebrities to help commemorate ‘The Showcase of the Immortals’ since the first WrestleMania in 1985. Events have featured a diverse range of celebrities, including Donald Trump, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Muhammad Ali. Sylvester Stallone may be brought to WrestleMania Xl, the 40th edition of the supershow, which is set for Philadelphia on April 6 and 7, according to WrestleVotes.
There is interest in working with Stallone “in some form”, according to the report, and WWE sources “hope” that the partnership will work out. However, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that the actor informed WWE of a scheduling conflict, suggesting that this optimism may have been misplaced. Until he can or wishes to end the conflict, the actor will not attend WrestleMania.

Cody Rhodes, the two-time Royal Rumble winner, is currently riding high with his elevation to the main event of WrestleMania 40. Originally, his match against Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship wasn’t a part of the plan, as the ‘Tribal Chief’ was scheduled to face The Rock.

WWE is continuing to deal with fallout from sexual-abuse allegations facing its former longtime chief Vince McMahon, with shares in parent Tko Group Holdings slipping Monday as investors weigh the potential downside.
Shares in Tko fell 4.4% today on nearly twice their normal trading volume, closing at $82.73. The stock is well below the level where it began trading last September after the merger of WWE with the UFC in a newly public entity controlled by Endeavor Group Holdings. One prominent Wall Street firm earlier Monday flagged “brand and legal risk” to Tko from the lawsuit filed against McMahon and former WWE talent chief John Laurinaitis by former employee Janel Grant, who offered graphic details in laying out accusations of sex trafficking, battery and rape.
McMahon, who in 2022 disclosed paying more than $12 million to multiple women to resolve other sexual misconduct complaints, has denied Grant’s claims.

The WWE Network streaming service will shutter at the end of 2024, as all of its content will move to Netflix outside the United States.
The WWE is officially coming to the world’s largest streaming service. Earlier this week, Netflix and the WWE agreed to an international deal that will see “Monday Night Raw” air live on Netflix every week for the next decade in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and other territories — although, the “Monday Night” part of the name might need to be changed. WrestleMania 39 will be here before WWE fans know it, as the Royal Rumble was this past weekend, and Elimination Chamber is only three weeks away. It's full speed ahead toward the Showcase of the Immortals, and this year's show will likely be one of the biggest ever. The event has already smashed previous gate records and will probably shatter monetary records as well. Over the last several weeks, WWE has begun to reveal some matches that audiences can—and might—be able to expect at WrestleMania 39.
In the most recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer broke down what the card looks like so far. "For WrestleMania, the locked in matches at this point are Reigns vs. Rhodes for the Universal title, Charlotte Flair vs. Ripley for the Smackdown women's title, Belair vs. the Chamber winner for the Raw women's title, John Cena vs. Austin Theory (no word...

WWE decided not to surprise fans with Cody Rhodes at the Royal Rumble, but his entering the match from the 30th spot was an interesting choice, to say the least. Conquering babyfaces don't usually enter battle royal matches last. It's a spot that can appear to be "gifted" from the company if given to the wrong person, and No. 30 is typically a spot reserved for heels or, you know, Brock Lesnar. Yet as the Royal Rumble rolled on, The American Nightmare was nowhere to be seen. After Logan Paul entered at No. 29, it became clear that 30 would be Cody Rhodes. He received an excellent response from those in attendance at the Alamodome, but why did WWE take this unconventional approach with the eventual winner?

Keith Lee was last seen on Aew television on December 21, when his former tag team partner, Swerve Strickland, turned on him and formed the Mogul Affiliates. The new faction has been picking up steam as of late. Strickland continues to win matches on Dynamite and Rampage, while Parker Boudreaux and the newly coined Trench look plenty menacing. Swerve seems to have taken issue with Dustin Rhodes, and it'll be interesting to see where that possible feud ends up going. However, Keith Lee's absence has been long enough that some fans may be wondering if he's alright.
In the most recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer gave the following update about the 38-year-old. "Keith Lee is out of action because they are selling the cinder block spot with Swerve Strickland, so at some point he should be back for revenge." The spot in question fame on the previously mentioned December 21 Dynamite.

Jon Moxley and Hangman Adam Page didn't get to have the feud they wanted to as 2022 came to a close, but the two have more than made up for it on Aew television lately. So much so that their program has overtaken Mjf vs. Bryan Danielson as the most interesting in the company, and they could be on the road to stealing the spotlight at Revolution. Moxley and Hangman aren't scheduled for that pay-per-view yet, but it feels like that's the way this thing is going following their barn burner to open the February 1 episode of Dynamite.
That was the third meeting between Jon and Adam, with the first fight ending early due to Page inadvertently getting knocked out in Cincinnati, Ohio. That Dynamite main event needed to be stopped, and Hangman was stretchered out. He picked up a concussion in that match, shelving him as 2022 wrapped up. However, they've...

Few events on WWE's calendar can boost a superstar's stock more than a strong appearance at the Royal Rumble. Showing out at WrestleMania can do wonders for a career, but the over-the-top-rope battle royal is where main event pushes are born. It's a rare chance for fans to see what the company thinks in real, impactful terms. For instance, Cody Rhodes might have been the favorite to win the men's Royal Rumble, but if WWE didn't see him as a WrestleMania main-event caliber star, fans would know that now because he wouldn't have won. Of course, he ended up securing his spot in Hollywood, but there were some massive questions looming over this show.

WWE fans haven't seen Ronda Rousey since she lost the SmackDown Women's Championship to Charlotte Flair on December 30. The Queen was making her surprise return after seven months away and challenged The Baddest Woman on the Planet to an impromptu match. Flair won, setting her up for the first legit babyface champion run of her already historic career. However, that victory has left Ronda Rousey in a state of limbo. She hasn't been seen on the blue brand since and hasn't worked any dark matches or live events. After spending a few weeks away, could WWE be planning to book her for the women's Royal Rumble match?
With only a few confirmed women for that bout, including Rousey might make sense. However, in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer writes she's not in the company's plans for the premium live event. "Ronda Rousey will not be...

The Royal Rumble is right around the corner, and at least one longtime WWE insider believes that it should be Sami Zayn who wins the men's event. As fans who have been tuning into Raw and SmackDown over the last several months know, the ongoing Bloodline saga is one of the best long-term pro wrestling stories in recent memory. The Trial of Sami Zayn segment stole the spotlight during the Raw is 30-anniversary show, placing even more emphasis on how ridiculously over The Honorary Uce is with crowds. Even standing in Roman Reigns' long shadow, audiences are clearly cheering for Sami Zayn.
Due to this, Dave Meltzer thinks that the 38-year-old should be the one who wins the Royal Rumble. In the most recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, he wrote the following: "Unless they can convince an outsider, like Austin, John Cena or Johnson to do the surprise appearance and win,...

WWE badly wants Stone Cold Steve Austin back inside the ring, and it's clear based on the caliber of stars he's reportedly been offered to work alongside. The Texas Rattlesnake came out of retirement for a match against Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 38. That bout was better than it had any right to be and was one of the highlights of a pretty solid weekend of sports entertainment. Stone Cold Steve Austin has stayed in shape following his bout against Owens, leading to speculation that he could return for another fight sometime in the future.
Earlier this week, Fightful Select reported that WWE had offered Austin a match against Roman Reigns, noting that the dollar figure attached was enormous. That report has since been refuted by Dave Meltzer, who spoke on the subject during the January 24 episode of Wrestling Observer Radio. Referring to Sean Ross Sapp's scoop, Meltzer said the following:...

It's been reported numerous times since last April that WWE wants The Rock to wrestle Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39. Roman Reigns unified the WWE Championship and Universal Championship at WrestleMania 38, which set up a massive dream match between himself and Dwayne Johnson. The Bloodline saga has been the best wrestling storyline in North America for six months, adding even more intrigue to a possible match between The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment and The Tribal Chief. There were even rumblings that The Rock would be at Raw Is 30 on January 23, but that is reportedly not happening.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio this past weekend, Bryan Alvarez asked Dave Meltzer what was happening with The Rock. The longtime wrestling insider shared the following: "Well, anything is possible, and [WWE] certainly could be—he could be keeping everything a secret from all but one or two people. There is that possibility, but...
