Guns N’ Roses have announced the departure of Frank Ferrer, the legendary band’s longest-serving drummer at 19 years with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame act.
A press release describes the split as “amicable,” adding, “The band thanks Frank for his friendship, creativity, and sturdy presence over the past 19 years, and they wish him success in the next chapter of his musical journey.”
Ferrer joined Guns N’ Roses in June 2006 and had been playing shows with the band ever since, including over the past near-decade since the 2016 return of guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan. He replaced Bryan “Brain” Mantia, following previous stints by Josh Freese, Matt Sorum, and classic Gn’R drummer Steven Adler.
Guns N’ Roses have not announced a replacement for Ferrer as of yet. Adler still tours with his own band, playing Guns N’ Roses songs, while Freese became a member of Foo Fighters following the passing of Taylor Hawkins.

Timothée Chalamet will be pulling double duty on Saturday Night Live this weekend, as both host and musical guest. Since the actor’s music career so far only consists of playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, seemingly he will be performing on SNL as Dylan. Sadly, he’s a month too late to do a snarling cover of “Must Be Santa.”
But long before Chalamet was booked on the show, Bob Dylan himself appeared on SNL for the first and last time in October of 1979. Dylan performed three songs from his Christian-themed album Slow Train Coming.
The host of the episode was Eric Idle, who claimed to be ill. The Monty Python star performed his monologue from a stretcher, following a cold open in which Buck Henry asks Lorne Michaels to put him in as the host instead. In a Reddit Ama, Idle revealed that it wasn’t just...

Nirvana’s Nevermind has just become only the ninth release to spend 700 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart. When you eliminate greatest-hits compilations, it’s only the fourth studio LP to achieve that milestone.
The game-changing 1991 album sits at No. 120 on the latest Billboard 200 chart, it’s 700th non-consecutive week on the overall albums tally. As far as studio albums are considered, only Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon (990 weeks), Metallica’s “Black Album” (767 weeks), and Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans (706 weeks) top Nirvana’s sophomore LP.
Among the other releases in the Top 9 are greatest-hits collections from Bob Marley and the Wailers (865 weeks), Journey (835 weeks), Creedence Clearwater Revival (724 weeks), Eminem (714 weeks), and Guns N’ Roses (704 weeks).
Upon its release in September 1991, Nevermind changed the face of rock music. At a time when hair metal was dominating MTV and radio airwaves, the Nirvana album helped usher in a grunge and alternative revolution,...

Surviving Soundgarden members Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron, and Ben Shepherd are reuniting to perform under the moniker Nudedragons at the Showbox in Seattle on December 14th.
The three musicians will be joined by singer Shaina Shepherd at the 13th annual SMooCH concert benefiting Seattle Children’s Hospital’s uncompensated care fund. Their appearance is described on the SMooCH website as being a “brief encore performance.”
Nudedragons is an anagram for Soundgarden. The band used that same moniker when they reunited in 2010 to play the Showbox for their first show since 1997.
Since the tragic passing of singer Chris Cornell in 2017, the three surviving Soundgarden members have only performed together a couple of times. Guns N’ Roses bandmates Duff McKagan and Slash have collaborated with Gibson CEO Cesar Gueikian on a new charity single titled “I Can Breathe.” It’s the lastest benefit song released under the Gibson Band moniker.
A year ago, System of a Down’s Serj Tankian and Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi appeared on the first Gibson Band charity single with Gueikian, a track called “Deconstruction.”
The new song, “I Can Breathe,” features McKagan on lead vocals, Slash on lead guitar and solos, and Gueikian on rhythm guitar and piano. The lyrics were penned by McKagan.
All proceeds from the song will benefit the National Alliance on Mental Illness (Nami), through Gibson Gives.
“It was such a pleasure to work with Cesar and his whole crew on this tune,” said McKagan in a press release. “The musical slant and progressive rock-ness of this huge epic pushed me in a whole new direction.

Outside of playing in Guns N’ Roses, lead guitarist Slash and bassist-vocalist Duff McKagan have long championed mental health organizations. For Giving Tuesday, they’ve teamed with Cesar Gueikian, CEO of instrument maker Gibson, for a new single, “I Can Breathe,” which will raise money for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (Nami). Slash previously raised money for Nami via his S.E.R.P.E.N.T. music festival.
“I Can Breathe” feels a little more metal than the music Slash and McKagan have recorded with Gn’R and Velvet Revolver.

Duff McKagan kicked off his US solo tour on Monday night (November 4th) in Boston, and concertgoers were treated to a special rendition of David Bowie’s “Heroes” featuring a guest appearance by Jakob Dylan.
Duff and his band delivered a rousing cover of Bowie’s triumphant epic, adding a hard-rock crunch to the classic song. Dylan helped out on rhythm guitar and vocals, hitting the high register on the climactic buildup: “I, I will be king / And you, you will be queen.”

Duff and his band delivered a rousing cover of Bowie’s triumphant epic, adding a hard-rock crunch to the classic song. Dylan helped out on rhythm guitar and vocals, hitting the high register on the climactic buildup: “I, I will be king / And you, you will be queen.”

John Mulaney’s promo for his “Saturday Night Live” hosting gig this weekend gets crashed by ‘Bob Dylan,’ who lends his Nobel Prize-winning talent to write some very unusual cue cards.
In the video, which was released on Wednesday, Mulaney becomes puzzled as his intro turns into a reminiscence about running into music producer Shooter Jennings in Luxembourg.
“Sorry. Uh, who’s the writer on this promo?” he asks as the camera cuts to James Austin Johnson as the folk icon, who says he’s been hired as the cue card writer since “it’s Season 50 and they’re busting out the big guns.”
The former “SNL” writer points out that the intro, which name-dropped Guns N’ Roses guitarist Duff McKagan, was “a little overwritten.” Mulaney adds, “They’re normally, like, pretty punchy. Maybe we could do something like, ‘Hey, I’m back in New York.'”

Saturday Night Live episode promos are often about 20 seconds in length and feature little more than the host, the musical guest, a cast member or two, and a very lame joke that fades from memory about 12 seconds after you hear it, at best. But leave it to John Mulaney to put together a nearly two-minute promo that’s funnier than just about anything that’s aired on the actual show this season, as much as we’ve enjoyed Dana Carvey’s brilliant Joe Biden impersonation.
It begins with Mulaney reading from a cue card.

Jerry Cantrell has unveiled the title track from his upcoming solo album, I Want Blood. The song features Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan on bass and Faith No More’s Mike Bordin on drums.
“I Want Blood” follows the singles “Vilified” and “Afterglow,” and serves as the final preview of the album before its October 18th release.
The song is one of three tracks on the album that McKagan plays bass on and one of two songs on which Bordin handles drums. Other musicians who contributed to I Want Blood include Robert Trujillo (Metallica), Greg Puciato, Gil Sharone, and Lola Colette.
Of the three singles released thus far, “I Want Blood” sounds the least like Alice in Chains. In fact, it has more of a Queens of the Stone Age vibe. However, Cantrell’s distinct voice and guitar playing are still instantly recognizable.

Jerry Cantrell has unleashed “Afterglow” as the second single from his upcoming album, I Want Blood. The song is accompanied by a music video created by Cantrell and visual artist Matt Mahurin, who directed Alice in Chains’ “No Excuses” and “Angry Chair” videos in the 1990s.
“Afterglow” follows previous single “Vilified,” which was released in late July. The music video for “Afterglow” features close-up shots of Cantrell singing the song along with eye-catching visuals created by Mahurin.

“Two of my all-time favorite videos I’ve directed are ‘No Excuses’ and ‘Angry Chair’ for Alice In Chains in the early 1990s,” stated Mahurin. “To be able to once again offer my visual work to Jerry’s ‘Afterglow’ some thirty years later was a blast. From opera aria to pop tune, everybody sees a movie playing in their mind’s eye when they listen to a song.

After more than 30 years on TV, The Simpsons seems to have maintained good relationships with several prominent rock stars, as evidenced by the time Homer opened for The Smashing Pumpkins, palled around with Mick Jagger and freaked out over George Harrison’s brownie. Even Green Day apparently didn’t mind being killed off via toxic sludge in The Simpsons Movie.
But one rocker isn’t too happy with The Simpsons, and probably isn’t going to back down anytime soon.
As we mentioned recently, Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan has repeatedly claimed that his notorious ‘80s boozing inspired the name of Springfield’s favorite beer. He brought up the issue again in an interview earlier this month, but stressed that he wasn’t interested in taking any legal action against The Simpsons — even though he could potentially win the rights to valuable IP like the Seven Duffs.

Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan has long maintained that Duff Beer from The Simpsons was named after him. However, one of the show’s producers and writers has now claimed the showrunners didn’t even know who he was when they dubbed the fictional beer brand years ago.
The Simpsons first aired in late 1989, aligning with Guns N’ Roses rise to fame with 1987’s Appetite for Destruction. So, the timing would have been right for McKagan’s name to have inspired Homer’s cheap beer of choice. The bassist originally claimed he was contacted about the use of his name in his 2011 autobiography, It’s So Easy: and Other Lies.

Part of what makes the world of The Simpsons so rich is its many fictional brand names — from Krusty Burger, to Lard Lad donuts, to Malk, which is somehow an actual product now (how much “Vitamin R” it contains is unclear).
Speaking of fake beverages that became real, Springfield’s favorite beer, Duff, is so iconic that an upstart German brewery actually tempted the wrath of Fox’s lawyers by producing its own, unauthorized Duff beer for years. Fox later signed off on a Chilean take on Duff purely to combat “fake versions” of Homer’s go-to beer. Sadly it wasn’t popular enough to justify building a real-life Duff Gardens or employing a full-time gyrating mascot.
But one aspect of Duff that has proven to be surprisingly controversial is its name. That’s because one rock star is claiming credit for having inspired the cartoon booze: Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan.

Iggy Pop Performs The Stooges’ “I Got a Right” and “1970” for the First Time in Over a Decade: Watch

Iggy Pop headlined No Values Festival in Pomona, CA over the weekend, and he brought back some beloved favorites from the Stooges catalogs for the first time in a decade.
Specifically, Pop dusted off “I Got a Right” for the first time since 2003, and performed “1970” for the first time since 1989. He also ran through a handful of fan-favorite Stooges tracks, including “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” “T.V. Eye,” “Death Trip,” “Search and Destroy,” and several more. In fact, he only played two non-Stooges solo tracks: “Lust For Life” and “The Passenger.” Watch clips of the performance below.
Pop was accompanied by an all-star backing band featuring Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner, The Armed’s Uriah Hickney, guitarist Matt Sweeney, and more.
The set from Pop at No Values was a one-off show, meaning that the 77 year-old punk icon likely won’t reprise the Stooges-centric set on a major tour any time soon.

When we think of fully realized fictional worlds, we tend to think of fantastical genre places like Middle-earth or the "Star Wars" universe. These are settings with intricate history and mythology; places not of our world.
One location we don't normally consider to be as intricate is Springfield. Plenty of sitcoms have fleshed-out worlds with characters the audience gets to know and care for over time, but few shows have as intricate a world with as much detail as "The Simpsons."
Sure, Springfield doesn't have fantasy elements or mythological creatures (most of the time), and it doesn't need them. This is as thoroughly constructed and fleshed out a world as "Dune," or Discworld, with its own unique history of deception, an abundance of colorful side characters like the enigmatic Dr. Marvin Monroe, a corrupt system of power, unique institutions, and more.
Before you light up your torches, think about how much we know about Springfield.

Guns N’ Roses made their name with a gritty blend of blues-infused hard rock, but the melodic ballad “Sweet Child o’ Mine” is the band’s most commercially successful song and only No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In previous interviews, Slash has said that his opening arpeggio guitar riff was essentially a toss-off that serendipitously unlocked the song’s full potential. Bassist Duff McKagan has gone a step further, revealing that Slash was actually trying to sabotage the ballad with the guitar intro.
Speaking on the Songcraft podcast, McKagan reflected on the songwriting process for “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and the origins of the eventual hit.
“Izzy [Stradlin] had the three chords,” McKagan said (as transcribed by Ultimate Classic Rock). “Ok, well that’s… ‘What do you do with that?’ Axl liked it. ‘Ok, well let’s try to make this work somehow.’”
According to McKagan, Slash wasn’t a fan of the tune.

Guns N’ Roses have unveiled an AI-generated music video for their recent single “The General.” The animated clip intersperses a narrative story with footage of the band performing live.
“The General” was officially released in December following its live debut a month earlier. It’s also paired with the band’s previous single, “Perhaps,” on a 7-inch vinyl version. Both songs started out as unreleased demos from Guns N’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy sessions, but were newly re-recorded with guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan, who rejoined the band in 2016.
The video shows Axl Rose and the other band members performing the song, as their human forms become animated versions of themselves. Per a press release, “Between the concert footage, [the video] dives into the subconscious of a young boy who stares down the monsters of dark childhood memories, blurring worlds in the process. The result is unlike anything the band has done...
