Fans of Fortnite who are hoping to see the iconic comic book character Spawn in the game might soon get some good news. Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn, recently hinted that it could be time for him to push for a Spawn skin in Fortnite.
Since his debut in the 1990s, Spawn has gained a large following through comics, an animated show, and a 1997 live-action movie. Recently, McFarlane shared that he had actually approached Epic Games, the creators of Fortnite, about bringing Spawn into the game before. “Maybe it’s time for me to pick up the phone,” McFarlane said in a recent interview at Megacon Orlando.
He explained that, during his earlier talks with Epic Games, the team was already in the middle of launching big collaborations with Marvel and DC, so they didn’t prioritize Spawn. McFarlane shared, “I had that conversation with them because I was making toys.

Some see Marvel Comics' heyday as either the Silver Age of Comics or the 1980s, with the latter being an era where almost every major character and franchise had great ongoing titles. The 1990s were a much more infamous decade, both for Marvel and comic books as a whole. Grim and gritty were in, and this saw several characters in the Marvel Universe hit it bigger than others.
The 1990s catapulted several Marvel heroes and antiheroes into stardom, be they X-Ceptional mutants or symbiotic Lethal Protectors. This time period defined Marvel's X-Men in particular, and they had just the right amount of edge for the era. The same was true for various vigilantes and antiheroes, who shined brighter than ever in the Dark Ages of Comics.

Recently, I finally got around to seeing Venom: The Last Dance. I never saw the movie when it came out in theaters because I had very little faith in the franchise after Venom: Let There Be Carnage, one of my least favorite comic book movies to come out in the era of comic books movies. Unfortunately, I paid a steep and overpriced four dollars to rent Venom: The Last Dance right before it came on Netflix. The movie was not worth the time or four whole dollars I spent on it. I genuinely would have rather stared at my reflection in the TV.
I know, my opinion about the movie is very strong. I do understand why some people like it. Action comedy is a very popular genre, but it very infrequently hits the spot for me especially when it's limited by the PG-13 rating. There are definitely some I like,...

If there is one thing guaranteed to kill off many fan dreams, then Hollywood’s obsession with money and copyrights is top of the list. This is something that Venom creator Todd McFarlane touched on while addressing how he would love to see Venom enter the MCU and face off with Spider-Man. While the Marvel characters did come together in Tobey Maguire’s third Spider-Man movie, the film was generally considered a bit of a mess, and it certainly didn’t allow Venom to live up to his full potential.

Many fans wonder if popular Spider-Man villain Venom may appear in theaters again, and his designer has some thoughts on the matter.
Todd McFarlane is the former Marvel Comics designer of Venom's first full appearance and founder of Image Comics and McFarlane Toys. Since Venom's inception on the page, the anti-hero has become an instantly recognizable superhero antagonist. He was first adapted on screen by Topher Grace in 2007's Spider-Man 3 and again in a trilogy of films that ran from 2018 to 2024 by Tom Hardy.
Todd McFarlane spoke with The Direct's Pamela Gores during his guest appearance at Megacon Orlando 2025 about his thoughts on Venom's current movie predicament and another impressive IP at Image Comics: Invincible.

The DC comics have spawned so many great stories and characters, and some of them got the chance to be adapted on the big and small screen. Zack Snyder was among the first filmmakers to tackle several projects in the DC Extended Universe but, as his time with the studio was done, James Gunn will take over the characters in the upcoming DC Universe.
The conversation about whose universe was better is inevitable, as Snyder has a series of devoted fans set to praise him, while Gunn has yet to impress since he's at the beginning of his long journey. However, over the years, the two filmmakers have often praised each other's work. Now, Gunn has proven the two are close in real life, as well, with a photo on Threads that's going viral on social media.

Venom: The Last Dancebrings Eddie Brock's story to a dramatic conclusion, with the 2024 Sony hit now set to be released on streaming. The film depicts a symbiote invasion of Earth orchestrated from the shadows by the villainous Knull, forcing Eddie and Venom to protect their world from the extraterrestrial threat. Meanwhile, a shady government organization also hunts the pair, giving them yet another obstacle in their final adventure.
The Last Dance introduces plenty of new characters, some of whom have a major role in the Marvel Comics universe. The sequel also features several major actors joining the Sony Spider-Man Universe for the first (but perhaps not the last) time. These are the most important characters that fans need to know before they see Venom 3 on Netflix when it hits the streaming service on February 25.

It seems as though nearly every iconic comic book hero has taken a trip on the Fortnite Battle Bus except this one.
In the 1990s, Spawn debuted in the comic book world. Todd McFarlane, who rose to fame after drawing for both Marvel and DC, brought his creation to life through his self-found publisher, Image Comics. Since then, Spawn's popularity has resulted in over 360 comics, an animated show, a 1997 live-action movie, and a soon-to-be new (also live-action) film.
The Direct chatted with Todd McFarlane at Megacon Orlando about where fans may see Spawn next, whether in video games or on the big screen, and his time at the convention.

pawn creator Todd McFarlane recently shared his thoughts on the highly anticipated fight between Spawn and Ghost Rider in the popular online series.
Spawn has been gaining popularity again in recent years. While the character has always had a presence in comics, his appearance in Mortal Kombat 11 and the upcoming King Spawn movie have put him back in the spotlight. So, when Death Battle announced a Spawn vs. Ghost Rider matchup, fans went wild debating who would win.
During an interview with Heroic Hollywood at Megacon in Orlando, McFarlane made it clear who he thinks will win.
“Spawn wins. Spawn beats Superman. Oddly, if you’ve been paying attention, and you’ve seen what he’s done in the last 30 years, if people wish to combine all of that at one moment, I don’t think there’s any other character that can say they have the power that he has.

The comic book origins of Venom are storied and dramatic. The legend goes that a Marvel Comics fan named Randy Schueller wrote a letter to the company in 1982, suggesting that Spider-Man's costume be changed from the classic red-and-blue color scheme to a more minimalist black-and-white outfit. Marvel liked the enclosed design and paid him $220 for the idea. Spider-Man was in the black outfit for a few years thereafter.
Later on, John Byrne stated that the black outfit was not made of cloth. Instead, it was composed of a partially biological alien material, itself a conceit invented to cover the fact that the costume would be ripped in one panel only to show up miraculously repaired in the next.
Later still, it was established that the biological costume was a sentient alien entity made of liquid that had mentally bonded with Spider-Man, making it a symbiote. After wrestling with the alien entity in his brain,...

Venom: The Last Dance took the last bow as the most successful Sony's Spider-Man Universe title in October 2024. After several months following its release in theaters, Venom: The Last Dance is heading to streaming.
The final chapter of the Venom trilogy showed Tom Hardy reprising his role as the anti-hero Eddie Brock/ Venom, serving as a conclusion to the franchise. Venom 3 sends both Venom and Eddie on the run from Knull, the god of symbiotes, and marks their toughest battle yet. Today, Spider-Man 3 is remembered as a by-product of one of the greatest memes in pop culture history whereas for one of its leading stars, Topher Grace, the film is one of the greatest Spider-Man movies ever made. Sam Raimi’s final entry in his iconic trilogy did not stand the test of time but the same sentiment does not echo with the film’s leading antagonist.

Spider-Man 3 made Topher Grace stand out, becoming his first big movie role where he was offered a leading part as much as the first Spider-Man elevated Tobey Maguire in the industry. But Grace’s popularity was never able to rival that of Maguire’s and ultimately, the actor’s rendition of Venom was bulldozed by Tom Hardy’s beloved trilogy.
Even so, Topher Grace has no regrets for one of his career’s worst movie roles.

Venom: The Last Dance undoubtedly marked the end of an era for Tom Hardy’s franchise, leaving fans with a sense of emptiness. Because, over the years audiences had grown attached to Eddie Brock and his chaotic yet oddly charming symbiote, making it difficult to say goodbye. But while casual moviegoers had embraced this version of Venom, there was a bit of disappointment among comic book fanatics.

For those who had followed Venom’s origins in Marvel Comics, the character on screen felt like a watered-down version of the monstrous, menacing force that made Spider-Man’s life a living hell. Even the legendary artist and co-creator of Venom, Todd McFarlane noted that Sony’s version was a major deviation done to fit Hollywood’s obsession with making every anti-hero “likable.”

Despite negative reviews, Venom was a hit in 2018. Grossing $856 million at the worldwide box office on a reported $116 million production budget, the movie's success continued when it hit physical media (it's said to have earned $70.7 million in DVD and Blu-ray sales).
Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Venom: The Last Dance weren't quite as successful - earning $501.5 million and $474.5 million, respectively - but Sony Pictures has still made a lot of money from the Lethal Protector.
Todd McFarlane and David Michelinie co-created the iconic villain who has little in common with Tom Hardy's interpretation of Eddie Brock. Talking to Cbr, McFarlane shared his thoughts on how Venom has been translated to screen and his evolution from bad guy to anti-hero.
"Well, I didn't have, I didn't have any input into any other and again, it doesn't bug me, right? Like I understand what the rules are. So they did their movie.

The live-action comic book film industry has been a somewhat ubiquitous presence in our world for the past two decades. And while that experience was a unifying and entertaining one for the first few years, it has snowballed into an unwanted imposition in our daily lives for the past half a decade or so. To the benefit of Kevin Feige, the Marvel chief architect seems to be aware of it.

Wicked, The Substance and Emilia Pérez snagged an impressive three wins each at the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards on Friday -- but none was able to claim the top award of the night. It was Sean Baker's surprise indie hit Anora that secured the Best Picture award.
Anora managed to defeat The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, Nickel Boys, Sing Sing, The Substance and Wicked for Best Picture -- making it a surprise winner in easily the most competitive category of the night. The comedy/drama film follows the relationship of Anora (Mikey Madison), who is a sex worker, and Vanya (Mark Eydelshteyn), the son of a wealthy Russian oligarch.

Following the release of 1997's Spawn, a sequel has been stuck in development hell since 1998. With a set title of King Spawn, a finished script, and a studio behind it, the sequel has just received an exciting update.
Todd McFarlane, who was a producer on the original film and the creator of the comic book series, has been intensely working on the reboot for years. Blumhouse Productions confirmed their involvement in 2017, with McFarlane confirmed as director, and Jamie Foxx joining the cast in May 2018. Speaking with Cbr's Caroline Ramsburg at Megacon Orlando, which takes place between Feb. 6 and 9, McFarlane also addressed the upcoming King Spawn, giving an encouraging update that everyone is working towards the best way to adapt the popular comic books.

Todd McFarlane's Spawn is a bit of an odd case, and not just because he's a hellspawn with a penchant for extreme violence. Unlike other popular comic book heroes, whose constant exposure through various media keeps them at the forefront of public consciousness, Spawn remains popular despite a very low-key - almost minimal - presence in pop culture.
Spawn had an auspicious entry into the world of comic books. The franchise started with a comic book series in the 1990s, Spawn by creator McFarlane, that outsold more than a few big-name titles from Marvel and DC. It expanded to a live-action film and continued by developing an Emmy Award-winning animated series and multiple video game adaptations.

Legendary comic book creator Todd McFarlane made waves when he announced a whopping 8 new Spawn titles at New York Comic Con in October 2024, all of which would be hitting shelves in 2025. While the character of Al Simmons first appeared in May 1992, McFarlane had actually conceived of him long before, as a teenager in 1977. Thus, the idea of exploring a pre-Al period of the lore was birthed, and Spawn Universe Editor-in-Chief Thomas Healy is writing Spawn '77, with issue #1 arriving in April 2025.
With the next iteration of Spawn on the big screen still over the horizon, McFarlane continues expanding the stories told on paper. Some other new titles from Image Comics this year include: Bloodletter (written by Joseph P. Illidge and Tim Seeley with art by Christian Rosado), about the former CIA agent Al failed to kill; She-Spawn #1 (written by Gail Simone with art by Ig Guara), an origin story for...

After Keanu Reeves' breathtaking performance as Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, new fans may be interested in learning more about the mysterious and brooding character. Takashi Iizuka, Shiro Maekawa, and Kazuyuki Hoshino created Shadow the Hedgehog for Sega's Sonic Adventure 2 on the Dreamcast in 2001. Shadow seemingly dying in Sonic Adventure 2 made it seem like he would never appear again, but the newly fan-favorite character would make his return in Sonic Heroes as he suffered from amnesia. This storyline would then continue in his own game, Shadow the Hedgehog. Taking inspiration from characters like Al Simmons/Spawn from Todd McFarlane and Vegeta in Dragon Ball Z, Shadow is an anti-hero and occasional foil to Sonic the Hedgehog.

One of the most panned superhero movies of all time, and a character that is prime for a reboot, is all set to stream for free in the new year. Spawn, the Image Comics character created by Todd McFarlane in the early 1990s, was given his own live-action adaptation back in 1997...and it did not go so well.
Directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé, Spawn stars action star and martial artist Michael Jai White in the title role, with the rest of the cast comprised of John Leguizamo, Martin Sheen, Theresa Randle, D. B. Sweeney, and Nicol Williamson. Spawn was met with savage reviews upon release, earning just 17% on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie did not fare much better with audiences either, landing a score of 37% on the Popcornmeter. You can judge the movie for yourself when it lands on Tubi on January 1. In the meantime, check out the official synopsis below.

The success of Amazon Prime Video’s Invincible reinforces what Spawn showed us decades ago — that there’s room for superheroes with complex morals and mature themes. When HBO's Spawn premiered in 1997, it shocked audiences with its bold storytelling, adult content, and brutal imagery. For years, superhero animation had primarily catered to younger viewers, but Spawn changed all that. Animation for adults was now possible.
Based on Todd McFarlane's wildly popular Spawn comic book series, the animated show proved that R-rated superhero stories could thrive outside the Marvel and DC ecosystems. Nearly 24 years before Invincible expanded the boundaries of animated superhero stories, Spawn paved the way for darker, edgier narratives in animation.

For the past decade, Deadpool has become an unlikely success story as the raunchy outsider upended Hollywood norms, broke box office records and reached new heights with this summer’s $1.3 billion grosser, Deadpool & Wolverine. The character also transformed Ryan Reynolds into one of the biggest movie stars in the world.
But more quietly, the man who birthed Deadpool has parlayed that success into rewards almost unheard of for any comic book creator. Over the past year, writer-artist Rob Liefeld capitalize on the cachet from the character with a multiple deals involving producers and studios hoping to find “the next Deadpool.”
In April, ahead of Deadpool’s July opening, Warner Bros. picked up the rights to Avengelyne, based on a fallen angel character cast down to Earth comic from the 1990s. The A-list package has Olivia Wilde attached to direct and Margot Robbie and Simon Kinberg attached to produce. That deal...

James Gunn’s rebooted and fresh Dcu has begun with the release of the Max series Creature Commandos. True to Gunn’s style, the animated series focuses on a few lesser-known characters from the DC Comics roster and gives a Suicide Squad-esque mission for a bunch of oddballs to go on before DC’s biggest superhero makes an appearance.
Gunn took over from the fumbling Dceu in late 2023 and announced his plan for the revamped universe, which is finally seeing the light. The filmmaker has also directed the upcoming Superman film and the second season of Peacemaker, which will jumpstart the Dcu. However, there are a few concerns regarding the reboot.

Iconic hero Spawn is once again being penned by his creator as Todd McFarlane returns to write his beloved creation and usher in the next era of the Spawn Universe. Next year's release of Spawn #360 doesn't just promise McFarlane's return, but a stunning new direction for the long-running franchise.
It won't be long before January is here, and the next year promises to be full of surprises, as Aipt Comics reports that next month's release of Spawn #360, will see the character once again being written by Spawn's creator, Todd McFarlane. McFarlane won't be alone as the issue will reunite him with comic legend Brett Booth.
The solicitation for Spawn #360 finds the title character in a bad place. Bludd has won, Spawn has lost, and the Vampire Kingdom has ascended. But this issue is just the beginning of what lies ahead for the entire Spawn universe.

Independent comic book publishers like Image Comics are struggling as a result of inflation. Truth be told, everyone is having a tough time financially right now. There isn't a single industry in the United States that is not affected by the current trend of inflation facing the American economy and that includes the comic book industry, as book prices continue to spike.
The Av Club tackled the problem head-on in a piece talking to multiple comic book creators including Image Comics President Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn about the state of the comic industry as book prices rise from $3.99 to $4.99, the highest comic book prices have risen in twelve years.
This industry-wide investigation sought to get to the bottom of whether the comic book industry can survive following a 25% price increase for standard 32-page comics, especially when it comes to independent publishers, such as Image, Skybound, Dstlry, and more.

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ premiered to poor reviews from both critics and audiences, with a low 32% approval rating, marking it as “rotten.”
It also received a “D” on CinemaScore—the lowest rating yet for a superhero film, although calling ‘Joker 2’ a superhero movie might be a stretch.
The movie flopped at the box office and again on PVOD. Given its troubled development, this outcome isn’t surprising. Lady Gaga reportedly didn’t expect it, but others involved in the film weren’t shocked by its performance.

The following contains spoilers for Venom: The Last Dance, in theaters now.
Venom: The Last Dance ends the Sony trilogy with a story that brings the saga of Eddie Brock and the Venom symbiote to a close. Featuring Tom Hardy in the role of the former reporter one last time, the story builds upon what was seen in its 2021 predecessor. This also sees the film set up a potential new path for the series and the Sony Spider-Man Universe.
Most of the loose ends from the series are closed in Venom: The Last Dance, though some new ones are opened for potential follow-ups elsewhere. These could take place in either the Sony Spider-Man Universe or the Marvel Cinematic Universe proper, namely due to the presence of one villain in particular. Unfortunately, it also seems to mean the end of Venom as fans know him.

The following contains spoilers for Venom: The Last Dance, in theaters now.
Touted as the final entry in the series, Sony's Venom: The Last Dance reunites Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock with the alien symbiote for a conclusive foray onto the big screen. Easily the most successful of Sony's Spider-Man Universe, the series has had the most connection to not only this universe, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Like the MCU, many fans will also want to wait until the credits finish rolling.
Like its successor, Venom: The Last Dance features a post-credits scene after the movie finishes. Given that the film itself is an emotional farewell to the saga that started in 2018, most audiences will want to celebrate until the end of the credits, anyway. While this might be the last Venom movie, as moviegoers are familiar with the series, there is a hint that something else is on the horizon.

Venom: The Last Dance wastes no time introducing Knull, the film's big bad in absentia, a primordial being who has existed in the dark outer periphery of the known universe since time immemorial. Thanks to an uprising led by his symbiote creations, Knull has been put out of commission, but, for whatever reason, he has the ability to open portals, through which he can send a legion of monsters called Xenophages -- a cross between super-charged grasshoppers, the creature from Bong Joon-ho's The Host, and woodchippers (more on that later) -- to Earth in the blink of an eye. Their objective is to retrieve a special artifact known as the Codex, which has the power to free Knull,...

During an interview with ComicBook.com, a reporter asked Hardy, as well as Venom: The Last Dance director Kelly Marcel, if they knew who had created the famous antihero. To the disappointment of Spawn fans everywhere, producer Jason Blum has sadly poured a large bucket of cold water over the prospect of the long-gestating reboot hitting theaters any time soon. Speaking with Brandon Davis at New York Comic Con, Blum, who has previously stated that the Spawn remake was eyeing a 2025 release, has now said that, while a script has been completed, its not exactly right.
"We got a script a while ago and we're working on the script but I'm not gonna make a movie until the script is exactly right. It's not exactly right yet. You know...I hope we get into production...But I am not gonna go into production on it until we have a script that we love.
