I used to read Lee Child's Jack Reacher books when I traveled, burning through a paperback on a long flight. Post-pandemic, I don't find myself in planes that often anymore, but I need still need my regular fix of preposterous action, hard-boiled mystery, and glorious tough guy nonsense. So the world of Reacher, built around a hulking former U.S. Army cop who travels the country as a homeless drifter and solves crimes/snaps necks along the way, now lives in my ears. I've gone full audiobook. Child's famous "frictionless" prose is ideal gym listening -- you don't need to concentrate too hard when you're on the treadmill, as the plotting is designed to go down real easy. Jack Reacher books are written to be enjoyed effortlessly by a wide audience, after all. Even a listener who is struggling through mile three of that daily jog can enjoy every twist and turn.

But that praise hasn’t come as a surprise […]

This is one of the best weekends for new indie releases in some time — a bit of space in theaters to run and audiences slowly, but increasingly, willing to return.
Focus Features’ The Outfit – the directorial debut of Oscar-winning screenwriter Graham Moore (The Imitation Game) — opens nationally on over 1,200 screens with Mark Rylance starring as a bespoke British tailor from London’s Savile Row. After a personal tragedy, he ends up running a tailor shop in a rough Chicago neighborhood making suits for the only people around who can afford them, a family of vicious gangsters.
The script is by Moore and Johnathan McClain. Also starring Zoey Deutch, Johnny Flynn, Dylan O’Brien, Nikki Amuka-Bird and Simon Russell Beale. It premiered in Berlin last month. Deadline review here.
Initially set for release Feb. 25, The Outfit occupies the slot vacated by Downtown Abbey: A New Era. In January, in the shadow of Omicron,...

Graham Moore is, by his own admission, not a very good planner.
The jump from winning the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for the 2014 drama “The Imitation Game” to making his directorial debut with a noir-inspired crime thriller was not part of some grand design to one day get behind the camera. In fact, Moore followed the “surreal and overwhelming” experience of winning an Academy Award with writing a book.
“There was a lot of attention, and I went home at the end of all that with a gold trophy,” Moore told TheWrap during a recent interview. “And that was pretty surreal and a bit overwhelming, and then it was nice to get to spend some time writing another novel. And I bounced around after that between novels and films.”
Indeed, Moore said he still spends half his life writing books and the other half making films, but as the story for “The Outfit” germinated,...

The key to a good mystery isn’t tricking the audience as much as it is entertaining them. The more you watch from this genre, the less slips past your perception. The moment the filmmaker fails to maintain their “trick” is therefore the moment they lose their viewer—there’s nothing else for us to grasp onto. Director Graham Moore and co-writer Johnathan McClain understand this fact. They know they can lean into the usual double-cross tropes if they keep the pace moving and characters on their toes. The quickest way to accomplish both is by targeting those same characters with their trickery instead. There’s no better deflection. If we’re too busy smiling about what we know that the people onscreen don’t, maybe we’ll end up surprised too.
That which is hidden throughout The Outfit is thus that which is left unsaid. Not lies. Not subterfuge.

It’s hard to imagine anyone better suited to the lead role of Graham Moore’s “The Outfit” than Mark Rylance — the story of a Savile Row tailor who works more or less exclusively for an Irish mobster in 1956 Chicago. Rylance’s character, Leonard Burling, knows the rules: You keep your head down and your mouth shut, and in return, you’re treated almost like family by the Boyle clan. And if you don’t, well, we’ve all seen enough gangster pictures to know the consequences.
Leonard hardly ever leaves his workshop, and neither do we, in “The Outfit,” a contained, almost play-like film noir the likes of which John Huston and Nicholas Ray were making in the early ’50s.
Today, of course, this is yet another example of the Covid-era trend of drawing a handful of characters into a single location where some kind of crime takes place.

Oscar-winning actor Mark Rylance’s special gift is an appearance of unspoiled authenticity, as if someone from real life had wandered into the frame, or — considering his extensive, legend-status background — onto the stage, his very presence ready either to blend in, or to shake things up.
It’s a talent that puts him in good stead to rivet our attention in establishing his role as a dedicated tailor facing dire circumstances in Graham Moore’s “The Outfit.” But it’s not enough to offset what’s questionably designed and ill-fitting about this claustrophobic, one-night-in-one-location thriller.
Moore, who wrote the film adaptation of the Alan Turing biopic “The Imitation Game,” directs for the first time from an original screenplay (co-written with Johnathan McClain). He was inspired by the alluring family detail that a beloved doctor grandfather of Moore’s had regularly treated a New Jersey mobster. In this case, the unassuming...

Overachiever Graham Moore moved from New York Times bestseller novelist to an Oscar winner for Best Adapted Screenplay (The Imitation Game) and this past March, became a filmmaker with The Outfit. Focus Features has set a moderate release for The Outfit on Feb. 25, 2022.
The pic reps Oscar winner Graham Moore’s directorial debut, and follows Leonard, played by Oscar winner Mark Rylance, an English tailor who used to craft suits on London’s world-famous Savile Row. But after a personal tragedy, he’s ended up in Chicago, operating a small tailor shop in a rough part of town where he makes beautiful clothes for the only people around who can afford them: A family of vicious gangsters. Maze Runner actor Dylan O’Brien also stars.
Moore, who won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for The Imitation Game, co-wrote the screenplay with actor/writer Johnathan McClain (Mad Men). The cast also includes Zoey Deutch (Set It Up) Johnny Flynn (Emma), Nikki Amuka-Bird (Nw) and Simon Russell Beale (The Hollow Crown). Producers are Scoop Wasserstein, Ben Browning and Amy Jackson.

Since we’ve already had faith-based features involving football, baseball (“Where Hope Grows”), basketball (“Slamma Jamma”), boxing (“Carman: The Champion”), competitive skateboarding (“Hardflip”) and even mixed martial arts (“The Fight Within”), it was doubtless inevitable that someone would produce a movie where the Lord works in mysterious ways on the golf course. Robert Redford’s “The Legend of Bagger Vance” (2000) didn’t quite qualify, given the nondenominational nature of its spirituality. On the other hand, “Walking With Herb” is explicitly and unashamedly upfront about depicting how an agent of God, or someone of an even higher pay grade, might directly intervene in providing a shot at redemption — and no handicap at all — for a golfer far from the fairway.

While there, he quits his job and starts to re-evaluate his life. He also learns that his parents are separating and each exploring new ways of life. Others in the cast include Josh McDermitt, Ryan Michelle Bathe, and Marissa Jaret Winokur.
The sitcom's pilot was produced at about the same time as Hot in Cleveland's. But, while Cleveland went on to become a big hit for TV Land, Retired at 35 did not.

TV Land has canceled "Retired At 35." According to Deadline.com, the sitcom will not return for new episodes.
Starring Jessica Walter, Johnathan McClain and George Segal, the series followed a young man who quits his job and decides to live the retired life with his parents. The series did well in the ratings when it followed "Hot In Cleveland" in its first season with the premiere attracting more that 2 million viewers. However, the debut of its 10-episode Season 2 only had 600,000 viewers.
Request for comment from TV Land was not immediately returned.
Guest stars over the show's two seasons included Robin Givens, Estelle Harris, Shelley Long, John O'Hurley and Fred Willard.
TV Land recently renewed two comedies, "The Exes" and "The Soul Man."

Though she's best known for her work on the perpetually angsty "One Tree Hill," Danneel Ackles has always felt more at home in the comedy world, so it's no surprise that she fits right in to TV Land's multi-cam "Retired at 35." On Wednesday's new episode, Ackles plays Jenn, a single mom who meets David (Johnathan McClain) at a grocery store -- and leaves the audience guessing as to who's fooling whom.
Zap2it visited Ackles and McClain on set in December while they filmed one of her three episodes in the second season. McClain explains that when David meets Jenn, he's still living off his parents and showing little initiative toward a lifestyle change.
"David at the beginning of Season 2 is still in a state of perpetual retirement, floundering and trying to figure his life out," McClain says. "In pretty short order [he] winds up meeting Jenn in a grocery store...

Retired at 35 is back for its second season with some big changes brewing. Sibling rivalry heats up now that David's sister Amy (played by Marissa Jaret Winokur) is in town, and David just may have found a girlfriend who can deal with all his baggage... and his parents!
We talked with star Johnathan McClain to get the scoop on working with Marissa, getting a longtime love interest and more!
What can you tell us about season 2 and your character?
Johnathan: Well, in season 2 the show has evolved from being mostly about a guy giving up his job and living with his parents into much more of a family comedy. It's been incredibly valuable for my character to have the character of his sister added back in. He now has someone his own age, with whom he has an intimate history, to play off, and that has made a world...

TVLand comedy "Retired at 35" returns for Season 2 next week, and this season, David (Johnathan McClain) may have met his match when Danneel Ackles joins the show -- and Zap2it has your first look photo of her character, Jenn.
After a few years on "One Tree Hill," Ackles was looking to trade in teen angst for some laughs, and has sought out comedic roles -- from "Harold and Kumar" to her underrated turn opposite Ryan Hansen on NBC's "Friends With Benefits."
On "Retired at 35," she tries her hand at playing a parent for the first time.
When we visited her on set, she admitted that it was a little weird for her to play a mom. "It's my first kid!" she jokes, giving credit to seven-year-old Caitlin Carmichael, who plays her daughter. "She's actually incredibly talented and sweet and smart, all those things that child actors are."

TV Land comedy "Retired at 35" is getting a new hot mom!
Danneel Ackles, best known from her "One Tree Hill" days as not-so-Clean-Teen Rachel Gatina, will join the series' second season, which went into production last month, for a guest starring gig -- and Zap2it has your exclusive details!
"Retired at 35" follows David (Johnathan McClain), an overworked 35-year-old who leaves the hectic NYC business world behind in favor of moving in with his parents... in a senior-living community.
In a three-episode arc, Ackles plays a single mother with an 8-year-old son who meets David in a grocery store, sparking up an immediate connection. When he finds out that she's got a kid -- and that they're clearly in very different places in their lives -- he's hesitant to embark on a relationship, but they decide to give dating a try anyway. Living large on the fairly amazing success of Hot in Cleveland, TV Land is not only bringing back its newest venture, Retired at 35, but has also given the go ahead to two more, brand new sitcoms. Thus far, there seems little doubt that the people at TV Land know how to get audiences, and as things continue to play out with the two sitcoms they have, it seems that there are plenty of people looking for a return to the glory days of sitcom, in more ways than one.
Given a solid fanbase of viewers tuning in for "old school" comedy fare, the channel apparently figured it could put together some fresh meat with perhaps more in common with those bygone classics than today's efforts, and the results have been surprisingly positive.

TV Land proved one thing with its premiere of Retired at 35 last night: This cable net has got its brand formula down. Like USA before it, with its quirky-light-heroes-solve-cases gambit, the channel — formerly reserved for endless repeats of classic TV (not that I’m complaining about the All in the Family on my DVR) — has nailed what will clearly now become its go-to approach. The hit Hot in Cleveland served up the template checklist: 1. Ridiculous premise that it’s best to accept without too much thinking. (L.A. ladies of a certain age “crash land” in Cleveland on their way...

Once a place to catch reruns of your favorite classics, TV Land is now asserting itself as a network for original programming. They're following the first season success of 'Hot In Cleveland' with another sitcom shot in front of a studio audience, 'Retired at 35' (premieres Wed., Jan. 19, 10:30Pm Et).
'Retired' follows David Robbins (Johnathan McClain), a young businessman who decides he'd much rather retire than work his way further up the corporate ladder. So he moves to Florida to crash with his dad (George Segal) and mom (Jessica Walter), in turn shaking things up for them as well.
I visited the set to hear all about the very esteemed cast, to bring the hilarious Segal up to speed on modern technology and the Internet ("Wait a second -- this whole thing is being conducted on a telephone?") and to...

Chicago – Has television become so repetitive that it copies itself only four months after the fact? Of course, TV Land’s “Retired at 35,” a new hump day companion for the network’s hit “Hot in Cleveland,” must have been in some sort of production before CBS’s “Sh*t My Dad Says” but they are so similar that one could be forgiven for mistaking the two. And the bigger problem is that neither of them are all that funny.
Television Rating: 2.0/5.0
As they did with the successful “Hot in Cleveland,” TV Land are once again trying to recreate a nostalgic, punchline & laugh track-driven form of situation comedy. And they’re doing it with at least one star of a previous success — George Segal of “Just Shoot Me.” The great Jessica Walter (“Arrested Development,” “Archer”) also appears in the pilot to steal a few scenes before moving on to something better.
