Cillian Murphy obtained one of acting’s most coveted achievements when he won an Oscar for his leading role in “Oppenheimer.” But his award season run for the acclaimed Christopher Nolan film didn’t end with his big night at the Dolby Theater. The Irish actor went on to receive his home country’s highest acting honor on Sunday at the Irish Film and TV Academy Awards when he won the Lead Actor — Film category for “Oppenheimer.”

The ceremony honored the best Irish film and television of 2023, with Pat Collins’ “That They May Face the Rising Sun” winning Best Film. Other notable winners included Paul Mescal taking Supporting Actor for “All of Us Strangers” and Alison Oliver winning Supporting Actress for “Saltburn.”

The 21st Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) Awards, which highlight Irish filmmakers, television creators and performers, saw Pat Collins’ That They May Face The Rising Sun win Best Film in an upset. Despite earning a second-best 11 nominations, the top award was its only win.

Lies We Tell all with three wins: for Director Lisa Mulcahy, Lead Actress Agnes O’Casey, and Best Script. It came in with 13nominations.

Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy repeated his Best Actor win at the Academy Awards for Oppenheimer with a win for Lead Actor. In the supporting categories, Paul Mescal won for All of Us Strangers and Alison Oliver topped all for Saltburn.

Oppenheimer was named Best International Film, Emma Stone was Best Actress, and Paul Giamatti won International Actor for The Holdovers.

In the television drama categories, Kin was the winner for series, directing, script, lead actress Clare Dune, and supporting actress Maria Doyle Kennedy.

Fresh from his Academy Award win for best actor, “Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy now has a chance to claim the same honor at his local awards.

The Irish Film and TV Academy (IFTA) has unveiled the nominees for its 2024 awards, with Murphy going up against “Saltburn’s'” Barry Keoghan and “All of Us Strangers” star Andrew Scott in the best actor category. Elsewhere, Jessie Buckley (“Fingernails”) and Saoirse Ronan (“Foe”) are among those nominated for best actress, while Paul Mescal (“All of Us Strangers”) and Kenneth Branagh (“Oppenheimer”) are in the running for best supporting actor.

But it was actually Irish features leading the pack of nominees, with Lisa Mulcahy’s “Lies We Tell” landing 13, followed by “That They May Face the Rising Sun” and “Double Blind.”

The IFTAs ceremony will be take place on April 20 at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre with Irish TV personality Baz Ashmawy on hosting duties.

Nominations are out for the 21st Irish Film & Television Awards with Lisa Mulcahy’s thriller Lies We Tell leading the pack on the feature side at 13, and crime drama Kin heading up the TV fields with 11 (scroll down for the ful list of nominees). The Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) will hand out its prizes on April 20 in Dublin.

Alongside Lies We Tell in the Best Film category are Double Blind, Flora and Son, Lola, That They May Face the Rising Sun and Verdigris. Each of those films also scored a mention for their directors.

In what was a banner year for Irish talent, there are several awards season notables vying for Best Actor as well, including Oppenheimer Oscar winner Cillian Murphy, Saltburn’s Barry Keoghan and All of Us Strangers’ Andrew Scott.

The Best International Film race includes All of Us Strangers, Oppenheimer, Past Lives, Poor Things, Saltburn and The Holdovers.

Break Out Pictures and Conic are partnering on UK-Ireland distribution of Pat Collins’ Irish feature That They May Face The Rising Sun.

Break Out Pictures will distribute the film in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland; with Conic releasing the film in England, Scotland and Wales. It will land in cinemas on April 26, 2024 in all territories.

Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) and Paddy Considine (House of the Dragon) will star in Small Town, Big Story, a new Sky original series created and directed by Chris O’Dowd (Moone Boy).

The six-part show focuses on an Irish village that gets taken over by a Hollywood production that throws the spotlight on an old secret.

“Every small town has a story to tell. Some don’t know how to keep a secret …,” reads a plot description, which promises “a warm and witty, very dramatic comedy.” It is set in the fictional town of Drumbán, “a rural village of rattled misfits on the border of Ireland and another world,” and explores “what happens when a Hollywood production rolls into town and throws the spotlight on a secret that’s been kept hidden since the eve of the millennium.”

Christina Hendricks and “House of the Dragon’s” Paddy Considine have been tapped to lead “Small Town, Big Story,” a new Sky Studios drama from Chris O’Dowd

O’Dowd (“State of the Union”) created and will direct the six-part dramatic comedy, which tells the story of the effect on a small Irish village when a Hollywood production begins shooting on its doorstep and rattled residents struggle to keep a long-buried secret under wraps.

The series is an Equity production, which is being shot in the U.K. and Ireland, but Sky has emphasized that all cast agreements comply with SAG-AFTRA rules in light of the ongoing actors strike. The cast were contracted before the strike.

In the series, “Mad Men” star Hendricks is set to play Wendy Patterson, a hot-shot L.A. producer who grew up in the fictional Irish village of Drumbán while Considine stars as local doctor and community stalwart Seamus Proctor.

Magnolia Pictures has acquired U.S. rights to “Joyride,” a road-trip comedy starring Oscar-winner Olivia Colman and Charlie Reid. The indie studio will release the film in theaters and on demand on Dec. 23.

The picture was directed by Emer Reynolds (“Songs for While I’m Away”) and written by Ailbhe Keogan (“Bad Sisters). The cast also includes Lochlann O Mearáin, Olwen Fouéré, Ruth McCabe, and Tommy Tiernan.

After making The Queen over a decade ago, Stephen Frears is returning to direct another film about high royalty, but this time Queen Victoria. Victoria & Abdul, starring Judi Dench and Ali Fazal depicts the friendship between the 19th century Queen and a young clerk hailing from India. At the youthful age of 82, Dame Judi Dench isn’t retiring for anyone, just a little like her latest role as an ageing Queen Victoria in Victoria and Abdul for which a joyous trailer and poster have been released.

Dench teams up again with the Philomena director Stephen Frears on a story which is based on the latter years of Queen Victoria who reigned over England for 64 years between 1837 until her death in 1901 and her relationship with a young Indian clerk who she befriends after he is sent to her court. Dench is reprising her role as the cantankerous Queen after she portrayed Queen Victoria back in 1997 in Mrs Brown alongside Billy Connolly from an earlier episode in the royal’s life, so stepping back into her persona should have come quite naturally to the veteran actress.

Based on the 2009 investigative book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee, Philomena focuses on the efforts of Philomena Lee (Judi Dench), mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock — something her Irish-Catholic community didn’t have the highest opinion of — and given away for adoption in the United States.

In following church doctrine, she was forced to sign a contract that wouldn’t allow for any sort of inquiry into the son’s whereabouts. After starting a family years later in England and, for the most part, moving on with her life, Lee meets Sixsmith (Steve Coogan), a BBC reporter with whom she decides to discover her long-lost son.

Lisa Barros D'Sa and Glenn Leyburn have directed a terrifically warm and entirely lovable movie about Terri Hooley, Belfast's chaotic godfather of punk. In the 70s, Hooley defied the miseries and ugly tribalism of the Troubles by opening a record shop in the middle of the city, quixotically called Good Vibrations. Bosnian war drama As If I Am Not There received three Ifta awards for Best Film, Director and Script for the film's Irish writer/director Juanita Wilson at tonight's Ifta awards, celebrating the Irish film and television industry.

Martin MCCann was named Best Actor for 'Swansong - Story of Occi Byrn', while Amy Huberman was got Best Actress for 'Rewind.'

Pierce Brosnan and Saorise Ronan took home the supporting honours at the awards with Brosnan winning Best Supporting Actor for his role in 'The Ghost', while Ronan's part in The Way Back earned her the supporting actress honour.

In the international categories, 'The Social Network' won the best international film, with its star Jesse Eisenberg winning Best Actor. Annette Bening took Best Actress for 'The Kids Are All Right'.

Hammer, Hammer, Hammer! That's all we hear about these days. Today, already, we've been banging on about two of their other current projects 'The Resident', starring Hilary Swank and Christopher Lee, 'The Woman in Black' with Daniel Radcliffe, and now we're reporting on a long-forgotten project of theirs, 'Wake Wood'. It was set to shoot over in Ireland with Aiden Gillen, Timothy Spall and Eva Birthistle and now finally things appear to be moving forward on getting this bad-boy Brit horror into theatres with the release of a new UK quad poster. David Keating directs from a script he co-wrote with Brendan McCarthy. Ella Connolly, Amelia Crowley, Brian Gleeson, Dan Gordon and Ruth McCabe co-star and you can check out the new quad and trailer below!

Wake Wood is a film that was shot in Ireland and Exclusive Films International will distribute this back-from-the-dead styled film internationally. In the story a couple lose their daughter to a "frenzied dog attack" (Upcoming) and in the small community of Wake Wood they find a way to bring their daughter back for a three day visit, but the situation gets complicated when they will not release their daughter back to the underworld.
