'Cast Away' Movie with Tom Hanks stranded on a deserted island 'Cast Away' Movie review: Tom Hanks excellent in high-concept Hollywood flick disguised as existential adventure drama Most people will see Robert Zemeckis' Cast Away as a celebration of the Triumph of the Human Spirit. A minority, myself included, will prefer the more mundane explanation that the film merely depicts a man following his survival instincts, which propel him – like any other animal, from cockroaches to crocodiles – to fight to remain alive almost against his will. Whichever way one chooses to view the survival of Tom Hanks' Federal Express engineer Chuck Noland (No-land, get it?) after being stranded for years on a deserted island (mostly shot in Monuriki, Fiji), Cast Away is little more than an elaborate, populist star vehicle disguised as an existential The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe-esque drama. A volleyball named Wilson The story of a...

The Warner Archive has reissued Paramount's DVD release of Goodbye, Columbus as a burn-to-order DVD title. The film caused a bit of a sensation in 1969 with its rather graphic- if comical- examination of a young couple's attempts to have a fulfilling sex life and the obstacles they encounter along the way. Based on Philip Roth's best-selling novella, the movie was released at an opportune time when such coming-of-age stories were able to speak to a new, rebellious generation. It was a sizable hit with critics and the public. Yet, the film never comes close to matching the impact of The Graduate, the movie it almost desperately tries to emulate. Richard Benjamin plays Neil Klugman, a young Jewish man living with his over-bearing aunt and uncle in a lower middle-class section of the Bronx. Invited to a swanky country club as a guest of a wealthy cousin,...

She went on to marry roles in leading Shakespeare plays onstage with TV roles in shows like The Twilight Zone, The Fugitive and The Untouchables.
Martin appeared in theatre productions all over America and in London. She also enjoyed film success in movies like Toys in the Attic and Goodbye Columbus.
The actress suffered a stroke in 1981, but continued to work onstage and on TV until four years ago - and became a well-respected drama teacher.
More films came, including Castaway, Some Kind of Hero, and Nightmare on Elm Street 3, in which she played ghoulish Freddie Krueger's mum.

Great TV characters never truly go away. Sure, their shows may eventually be cancelled but we get to see them via reruns, DVDs, and maybe even an occasional reunion. If we're lucky, they might even pop up in an unexpected place or two -- like The Price Is Right and The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson.
The Drew Carey Show ran from 1995 until 2006. The sitcom centers around a nice guy (Drew Carey) who works in the human resources department of a multinational department store. His boss is Mr. Wick (Craig Ferguson), a nasty man with a loathsome secretary named Mimi Bobeck (Kathy Kinney) -- an overweight woman who wears too much makeup. Other characters are played by Ryan Stiles, Diedrich Bader, Christa Miller, John Carroll Lynch, Cynthia Watros, Ian Gomez, and Nan Martin.
The castmembers are all very talented but the show's most memorable persona is certainly Kinney's egocentric Mimi.
