Pakistani animator Usman Riaz's The Glassworker is a seminal hand-drawn animation feature, ten years in the making. Usman and his collaborators at Mano Animation Studios had to build the infrastructure from scratch to create Pakistan's first animated film, which premiered at the prestigious 2024 Annecy International Film Festival.

Directed and written by Riaz and co-writer Moya O'Shea, the story revolves around Vincent (Sacha Dhawan) and his father Tomas (Art Malik), whose peaceful life running a glasswork shop in a small town is disturbed by conflict sweeping down from the north. Usman Riaz’s Annecy selection “The Glassworker” has unveiled its first trailer. The film will also screen at the Cannes Film Market and has set a date for theatrical release in Pakistan.

The animated film will debut in Annecy’s Contrechamp strand. A lost silent horror movie classic, "London After Midnight," will be brought back to life as a full-cast audio drama, giving audiences a chance to experience the story in a new format. The original film, released in 1927, is considered lost due to the destruction of the last remaining print in a fire. Previous restoration efforts have only provided glimpses of what the film may have been. The upcoming audio production will feature a voice cast including Art Malik, and will be recorded in Dolby Atmos for an immersive listening experience. It will be released as a limited edition vinyl and episodically this fall.

Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid debuted on Disney+ last week and made one hell of a splash. According to Disney, The Little Mermaid has garnered 16 million views in its first five days on the streaming service, which makes it the most-watched Disney movie premiere on Disney+ since the release of Hocus Pocus 2 last year.

While The Little Mermaid wasn’t one of Disney’s strongest-performing live-action remakes, it went on to gross $569 million worldwide and stands (so far) as one of the highest-grossing movies of the year. Judging by the streaming numbers, it seems that many were eager to revisit The Little Mermaid (or watch it for the first time) on the streaming service. Disney says that a view is defined as total stream time divided by runtime.

The live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid utilized CGI and special effects to create the underwater world and was filmed in Sardinia, Italy, to give it a Caribbean feel. The villages of Santa Teresa di Gallura and Castelsardo in Sardinia were used to film various scenes. Pinewood Studios in England provided the water stages for sea sequences and sets for the interior of Eric's castles, making it the central filming location for The Little Mermaid.

The 2023 live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid takes place in the fictional underwater kingdom of Atlantica and a town on the coast of the Caribbean. Still, the movie's cast and crew never ventured to the Caribbean to film scenes. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s directorial ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’, which has completed 10 years this month, will be re-released in a special way, significantly for hearing and speech-impaired people, with the special sign language, in 30 cities across India.

Released in 2013, the Farhan Akhtar starrer traced the inspiring journey of the Indian Sprint legend late Milkha Singh, and how he overcame many agonizing obstacles in order to become a world champion, Olympian, and one of India’s most iconic athletes.

The makers will pay tribute to late Milkha Singh by re-releasing the inspirational biographical sports drama on August 6, in selected theaters. The film will be screened for the hearing and speech-impaired people, in the PVR theaters, and will be showcased with the special sign language.

Disney’s live-action remake of the iconic animated film is headed for an estimated four-day domestic debut of $118.6 million, the holiday’s fifth-biggest opening of all time, according to final weekend actuals. The three-day gross is an estimated $96 million-plus. (On Saturday, the film looked to earn north of $120 million over the long holiday weekend, but domestic estimates shifted.)

Overseas, Little Mermaid started off with a disappointing $68.1 million from 51 markets for a projected global launch of $186.7 million through Monday. The pic drowned in China, opening to just $2.5 million. That’s one of the best showings ever for screenings before the holiday weekend. Little Mermaid‘s tally includes $850,000 in grosses from special screenings Wednesday; the rest is from traditional Thursday evening screenings.

Overall, Little Mermaid ranks No. 7 on the list of top preview grosses for pics rated G or PG.

As I mentioned last week, nostalgia appears to be playing a big role in this just-started cinema Summer season. The remake of that 1990s buddy comedy may just be the tip of the iceberg. For this holiday weekend’s big, really big as Ed Sullivan would say, movie release, go back just two or three more years to 1989. That year may be best known for the Batman box office blockbuster, but it’s also a watershed moment for feature Animation, particularly at the “Mouse House”. Disney feature animation was just beginning to snap out of a creative stupor as the modest successes of The Great Mouse Detective and Oliver & Company began to offset the losses of the fantasy debacle The Black Cauldron. This is all covered in the superb documentary feature Waking Sleeping Beauty. And then two Broadway “whiz-kids,” thought that the company should return to classic fairy tales with a Tony-worthy musical score.

The Little Mermaid is expected to swim to $120 million in its four-day domestic box office debut, making it one of the better Memorial Day weekend openings and marking the first 2023 summer tentpole targeting females.

This would make The Little Mermaid one of the most successful live action remakes, with the likes of The Lion King bringing in $191 million over its debut weekend, Aladdin garnering $91 million, and Beauty and the Beast launching with $174 million. All three of these movies then went on to gross over $1 billion worldwide, and thus suggesting that The Little Mermaid could well do the same.

Disney’s attempts to reinvent their animated classics as live action versions has proven to be largely a smart boxoffice play, but one with a mixed creative result. Older Disney staples have gotten the treatment by focusing on the villains in Cruella and Maleficent and their sequels, even an unfortunate Disney + attempt on the untouchable (if you ask me) Lady And The Tramp. But even approaching an animated masterpiece, 1989’s The Little Mermaid and essentially trying to make a splashy (sorry) big screen live action musical that works above and under the water seems dicey on paper. So what do you do? Bring in Rob Marshall, and as it turns out that is all the new live action The Little Mermaid needed.

CBS’ reboot of the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie True Lies will not be back and has bitten the bullet after just one season. Proving that not every big movie makes good television, the series failed to connect with an audience and has been canceled ahead of its season finale on May 17.

Halle Bailey is making a splash as the star of The Little Mermaid and during the Hollywood premiere of the Disney film she opened up about finally having audiences see her as Ariel on the big screen.

“This moment means everything to me, I’m so grateful to be here,” she said. “I just feel really honored and I’m happy the day has finally come where we can all watch it.”

Disney‘s live-action The Little Mermaid is swimming toward Memorial Day Weekend with a song in its heart and dollar signs in its eyes. The latest version of the Disney animated classic is tracking toward a $110M 4-day opening. That number puts The Little Mermaid in the top eight spots for a Memorial Day Weekend release. The upcoming musical won’t touch Top Gun: Maverick’s $160.5M Memorial Day start, but $110M is an outstanding total nonetheless.

Disney has a history of releasing films on Memorial Day Weekend, including Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, which earned $153M, the studio’s highest total for the 4-day holiday debut. Disney’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin earned $116.8M in 2019, placing the Guy Ritchie-directed fantasy film slightly above The Little Mermaid’s expected launch.
