- Worked tirelessly as the director of most of the "Monty Python's Flying Circus" episodes to keep the show afloat, despite troubles with extreme skepticism on the part of BBC executives about the show chances for success.
- Initially pursued a career in medicine, but got a taste for movie making during World War II. While in the Royal Marines he become associated in the Globe Players (an amateur theater group with the Royal Marines); this prompted him to pursue a career as an actor instead of that of a physician.
- Although his character from Lawrence of Arabia is merely a cameo (and uncredited), Peter O'Toole's quote as T.E. Lawrence is iconic: that being: "Michael George Hartley, you're a philosopher." It's even shown in the movie Prometheus; after which, Michael Fassbender repeats it aloud.
