For 10 seasons, the rebooted "Hawaii Five-0" was a rock-solid Nielsen ratings performer for CBS. A combo nostalgia play for Baby Boomers who grew up watching Jack Lord and James MacArthur bust perps in and around Honolulu, and a stylish procedural targeted at fans of the network's popular "CSI" and "NCIS" franchises, "Hawaii Five-0" delivered consistently with its wildly appealing cast and storylines that explored its characters' pasts without ever getting bogged down in drawn-out story arcs. "Hawaii Five-0" knew what its fans wanted, and never deviated from its tried-and-true formula.
When a series hits the Nielsen sweet spot week in and week out, you figure the network would bend over backwards to keep it running until people stop watching. This is what Fox continues to do with "The Simpsons," now in its 36th season, and how NBC has rolled with its "Law & Order" franchise.

Disneyland has released a first look of its new reimagined Adventure Treehouse, inspired by Walt Disney’s Swiss Family Robinson.
The new attraction opens Nov. 10 in Disneyland Park and pays tribute to the original treehouse Walt Disney and his team built in 1962. Previously, the treehouse was themed after the 1999 animated film Tarzan.
In the new iteration, there’s a water wheel “powered by the magical waters,” a homey dining area for the Robinson family of 5, a wood-carving station, an astronomy loft, a nature room and the father’s art studio.
“The video explores the mother’s music den, sons’ nature room and daughter’s astronomer’s loft among the tree’s massive boughs,” said Disney officials in a statement. “It also offers a glimpse at the ground-level kitchen and dining room, plus the father’s art studio.”
There are no height requirements for the attraction.

Jerome Coopersmith, who wrote more than 30 installments of the classic 1960s-70s police drama Hawaii Five-o and received a Tony Award nomination for his book for the 1965 Harold Prince-directed Sherlock Holmes musical Baker Street, died Friday in Rochester, NY. He was 97.
His family announced his death.
After earning a Purple Heart at the Battle of the Bulge in 1945, Coopersmith also wrote, among other stage works, the first act of the 1966 three-part Mike Nichols-directed musical The Apple Tree, starring Barbara Harris and Alan Alda. The musical was revived for Broadway in 2006 by the Roundabout Theatre Company in a production that starred Kristin Chenoweth, Brian D’Arcy James and Marc Kudisch.

Coopersmith died peacefully Friday in Rochester, New York, his family announced.
After earning a Purple Heart for his service during World War II, Coopersmith broke into television writing for quiz shows and historical programs. Third Man on the Mountain
1959 / 105 Mins. / 1.66: 1
Starring Michael Rennie, James MacArthur
Written by Eleanore Griffin
Directed by Ken Annakin
CineSavant Revival Screening Review
From Newbery Medal to amusement park thrill ride, James Ramsey Ullman’s Banner in the Sky climbed the ladder as deftly as the men who scaled the mountains in his 1955 best seller, a fictionalized account of the first explorer to make it to the top of the Matterhorn.
It was rarefied air even for Ullman who, when he wasn’t writing, could be found shinnying up the nearest cliff side—though not recognized as a “high end” climber, the writer’s attraction to life or death experiences made him an honorary member of a lofty clique. In 1957, Walt Disney purchased the rights to Ullman’s novel and set the Mouse Machine in motion, first the tie-in paperback, then the Sunday comic strip, and after much fanfare,...

William Smith, the action star who tussled with Clint Eastwood in Any Which Way You Can, made a lasting impression as the evil Falconetti on TV miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man and was a regular on the final season of Hawaii Five-o, died July 5 at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, CA. He was 88.
His wife Joanne Cervelli Smith confirmed the death. A cause of death was not disclosed.
Smith was born in Columbia, Mo, in 1933 on his family’s cattle ranch where he grew up surrounded by many beloved horses. Although the Smith family moved to Southern California before he was 10, it was his time spent on the ranch that influenced the roles he’d take during his more than seven decades-long career in TV and film.
He began his career in entertainment as an extra in 1942’s The Ghost of Frankenstein when he was eight years old.

In the fall of 2010, Peter M. Lenkov took a big gamble, re-envisioning a well-remembered police procedural from the past for new generations.
It was a bet that paid off big time as Hawaii Five-0 said "Aloha" after 10 seasons on Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 22.
Reboots are a tricky business as creators are messing with viewers' sense of nostalgia.
Five-0 is undoubtedly the most successful reboot. Other top-notch efforts include One Day at a Time, Battlestar Galactica, Charmed, Roswell, Dynasty, and Lost in Space.
Consigned to the scraphead of history are such messes as Charlie's Angels and Bionic Woman.
Lenkov, previously known as executive producer of CSI: New York and 24, made all the right moves with this reboot.
He kept the gorgeous scenery of Hawaii as the backdrop for exciting action sequences.
He kept the iconic theme song, one of the two best themes in TV history.

Exclusive: A major new character is coming to CBS’ long-running series Hawaii Five-o. Star alum Lance Gross is joining the rebooted crime drama as a guest star in the final two episodes of Season 10, with a series regular option pending renewal. The back-to-back episodes will air April 3.
Gross will play Lincoln Cole, a decorated war hero and ex-Marine Gunnery Sergeant with the Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team. Lincoln’s actions as an anonymous good Samaritan now have him in the cross-hairs of some very dangerous people, and McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) and Five-0 are determined to protect him at all costs.
A contemporary take on the classic 1968-80 series, Hawaii Five-o stars O’Loughlin as Lt. Cmdr. Steve McGarrett, the character originated by Jack Lord, with Scott Caan at Det. Sgt. Katrina Law (The Oath) has joined the upcoming 10th season of CBS’ hit drama Hawaii Five-o as a new series regular.
Law plays Quinn Liu, a former staff sergeant with Army Cid recently demoted for insubordination. After an explosive collision with Five-o on a case involving veterans, she soon becomes a loyal ally to the team that always has valued integrity over playing by the rules. Sharp-tongued in several languages, Quinn has a deep understanding of military culture, a mysterious past, and a deft ability to match wits with McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin).
“We are thrilled to have Katrina join the 10th season Hawaii-Five-o as a series regular,” executive producer Peter Lenkov said. “She dazzles as Quinn, the team’s newest recruit, and viewers are going to love seeing how she first encounters McGarrett and Danny. If you know the show well, you’ll be feeling some déjà vu.”

With fans clamoring for a crossover episode between CBS procedurals Hawaii Five-0, Magnum, P.I., and MacGyver, the co-creator of the three series says it may just happen.
Peter M. Lenkov, the creative mind behind the reboots, sat down with the casts of the shows Saturday afternoon at PaleyFest in Los Angeles.
After the actors dished on their characters, moderator Kevin Frazier of Entertainment Tonight asked the day’s burning question — when will there be a crossover?
“This is a question I’ve never heard before,” Lenkov joked. “We talk about it a lot in the room, how to do it. I think there’s a way to do it, it’s just logistics.”
While Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum, P.I. are shot in Hawaii, MacGyver is filmed in Atlanta, making a crossover a bit of a challenge.
Still, Lenkov told Saturday’s audience of loyal fans, “We’d love to make that work out.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is your favorite murder mystery show?
Erik Adams (@ErikMAdams), A.V. Club
It has to be “Twin Peaks,” right? I’m one of those annoying people who insists the show is so much more than “Who killed Laura Palmer?”, but that is our entry point to David Lynch and Mark Frost’s weird little world, and the question that briefly made “Twin Peaks” a pop-culture phenomenon. And the chapters of the series that deal with finding Laura’s murderer are some of the most compelling, from the dream-sequence enhanced “Zen, Or The Skill To Catch A Killer” or the eventual solution to the mystery, a...

Director John Frankenheimer.
I'm often asked which, out of the over 600 interviews I've logged with Hollywood's finest, is my favorite. It's not a tough answer: John Frankenheimer.
We instantly clicked the day we met at his home in Benedict Canyon, and spent most of the afternoon talking in his den. A friendship of sorts developed over the years, with visits to his office for screenings of the old Kinescopes he directed for shows like "Playhouse 90" during his salad days in live television during the 1950s.
We hadn't spoken for nearly a year in mid-2002 when the phone rang. It was John, who spoke in what can only be described as a "stentorian bark," like a general. "Alex!" he exclaimed. "John Frankenheimer." He could sense something was amiss with me. It was. My screenwriting career had stalled. My marriage was progressing to divorce. I had hit bottom. John knew that...

Ed Asner is returning to Hawaii Five-0 after 36 years. Jack Lord keeps his island clean in Hawaii Five-o.
The 11th season of the original tropical island crime-fighting cop drama Hawaii Five-o, on disc the same day as the new version of this classic TV series, originally aired on CBS-tv in 1978/1979.
The show stars Jack Lord (Dr. No) and James MacArthur (Hang’Em High) as Hawaii-based cops Steve McGarrett and Danny “Danno” Williams.
The landmark series ran for 13 seasons (ending in 1980), so that means that there are only two more seasons to release on disc individually before the studio can go to town and issue a complete-series set, which translates into a lot of discs (we’re thinking 80 or so…).

Scott Caan awoke Wednesday (June 29) with this reaction: "Tom Sizemore is coming on?"

Pasadena - Forget the AFI Top 10 list of Best TV shows. Why should care about TV since they are the American Film Institute? This is kind like the American Diabetic Prevention Society’s Top 10 Favorite Sugary Candy Bars list. Or Bravo’s Top 10 Hunting Shows. Or Madd’s Best 10 Drinks to Mess You Up. Or Charlie Sheen’s Top 10 Things You Can Do Without Involving Hookers and Blow. If they care about TV that much, shouldn’t they be the Aftvi? But they are a pack of List Whores over at AFI with their 100 Years a 100 Stupid Lists press releases.
Why does critic or critic group have to tell you the Best or Worst of the Year? Party Favors is proud to announce the Meh Awards for the 10 TV shows that didn’t work for me in 2010. They weren’t the most pathetic things on TV, but made me lose interest in watching them.

When James MacArthur passed away last week at the age of 72, the obituaries I read emphasized his role as “Danno” on the long-running TV hit Hawaii Five-o, and understandably so…but at the same time they glossed over his career-building years at the Walt Disney studio. I was too young to see teenaged MacArthur in the live TV drama The Young Stranger and the feature film it spawned was over my head as a young moviegoer, but I vividly remember being introduced to the actor when Disney released The Light in the Forest, Third Man on the Mountain, Kidnaped, and…...

American actor known for his role as Danno in the television series Hawaii Five-o
One actor in his time plays many parts, so it is a mixed blessing for a performer to be forever associated with one role and one catchphrase. James MacArthur, who has died aged 72, was instantly identified with Detective Danny "Danno" Williams in the long-running television series Hawaii Five-o (1968-79), in which he was habitually told "Book 'em, Danno" by his superior officer, Detective Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord), after villains had been captured.
From the outset, MacArthur could not escape being reminded that he was the son of celebrated parents. His mother, Helen Hayes, always flagged as "the first lady of the theatre", had a long career on stage, in television and films, winning two Oscars 40 years apart, and his father, Charles MacArthur, co-wrote and co-directed several films with Ben Hecht, one of which, The Scoundrel (1935), won a screenplay Oscar,...

I've never seen "Hawaii Five-o," never saw Disney's "Kidnapped," and though I grew up loving "Swiss Family Robinson," my least favorite character in the film was James MacArthur's Fritz. Enough that I kinda forgot about the elder brother of the shipwrecked clan until hearing about the actor's death yesterday. Here is something else I recalled with the news: MacArthur co-starred in the 1963 WWII film "Cry of Battle," which is best known for being half of the double-feature (along with the Korean War film "War is Hell") playing at the Texas Theatre when Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested there following…...

James MacArthur, best known to American television audiences as "Danno" in the classic TV series "Hawaii Five-O," died of natural causes today in Florida. He was 72 years old.
As youthful Detective Danny "Danno" Williams, MacArthur became as recognizable as Jack Lord, who played the team's leader Steve McGarrett. However, it was Lord who uttered what would become the series' signature catchphrase: "Book 'em, Danno." The original "Hawaii Five-O" aired from 1968 until 1980; CBS recently premiered a modern reboot of the crime drama with Scott Caan playing Danny Williams. MacArthur, the last living member from the original series main cast, had agreed to appear in an upcoming episode, according to a statement on his personal website.
Born James Gordon MacArthur on December 8, 1937, in Los Angeles, California, MacArthur is the adopted son of playwright Charles MacArthur and his wife Helen Hayes, who was considered to be the First Lady of the American stage. He grew up in Nyack, New York, with his parents' biological daughter Mary, and was educated at Allen Stevenson School in New York, and later at Solebury School in New Hope, Pennsylvania. MacArthur would later attend Harvard but, after working in several Walt Disney films over his summer breaks, left to pursue an acting career full-time.
MacArthur also won acclaim onstage, making his Broadway debut in 1960 playing opposite Jane Fonda in "Invitation to a March." But his clean-cut looks and athletic build won him roles in the late 1950s and 60s in several Disney films, including The Light in the Forest, Third Man on the Mountain, and the classics Kidnapped and Swiss Family Robinson. He also played a pivotal role in the 1965 film classic Battle of the Bulge. During that period MacArthur also guest starred on a number of television series including "Gunsmoke," "Bonanza," "Wagon Train," "The Untouchables" and "12 O'Clock High." He even co-starred with Hayes in a 1968 episode of "Tarzan."
Reportedly it was his appearance in the legendary Clint Eastwood Western Hang 'Em High that would eventually lead to MacArthur winning the role on "Hawaii Five-O."
After "Hawaii Five-O" came to an end, MacArthur returned to the stage, making guest appearances on series such as "Fantasy Island," "The Love Boat," "Vega$,"and "Murder, She Wrote." He also reprised the role of Dan Williams in a 1997 attempt to resurrect "Hawaii Five-O" but the pilot, in which Williams had been made Hawaii's Governor, was never picked up. His final small-screen appearance was in the 1998 TV movie "Storm Chasers: Revenge of the Twister."
According to a family statement reported by People.com, MacArthur spent his time off-camera enjoying sports and played flamenco guitar. He was formerly married to actress Joyce Bulifant from 1958 to 1967, and to actress Melody Patterson from 1970 to 1975. Both unions ended in divorce.
MacArthur is survived by his wife, Helen Beth Duntz, four children and seven grandchildren.

Executive Producer Peter Lenkov told EW that it remains a goal to persuade James MacArthur (inset) — aka “Danno” on the series that first aired from 1968 to 1980 — to make a cameo on the CBS drama.
“We’ve been talking to James about being on the show but he just doesn’t know because he’s busy with a business he’s launching,” said Lenkov. “But we’d love to have him.

HollywoodChicago talked with them all, and Hc ace photographer Joe Arce put the finishing touch on the interviews with his vivid shots.

Dawn Wells, Mary Ann on Gilligan’s Island
The most famous castaways in television history were only on the air in their original run for three short seasons, 1964-1967, on CBS. But in an explosion of syndicated popularity “Gilligan’s Island” in essence has never left the airwaves.

CBS is excited about Hawaii Five-0. And why not? The original series ran for twelve seasons between 1968-80, making it one of the most enduring crime dramas in television history. Ask most people what the most recognized or famous television theme song of all time is, and they're likely going to say either Hawaii Five-0 or Mission Impossible. Even those who haven't seen Five-0 on television can probably hum the theme.
By that reckoning, it sort of makes sense to reboot the series for a contemporary audience. At least that's what CBS is gambling in its new version of Hawaii Five-0, which kicks off tonight. The network was kind enough to send us a screener a while back, and it's taken yours truly this long to crank out my two cents because we're tenaciously working behind-the-scenes on a complete redesign of CinemaSpy.
So what should you expect from Five-0 redux?...

In the original Hawaii Five-0, James MacArthur appeared in 11 of the hit show's 12 seasons as Danny "Danno" Williams, the second-in-command of the fictional Hawaiian State Police squad. He also had a significant role in the unsold pilot for a new series starring Gary Busey. And now, as the last surviving original castmember, MacArthur has agreed to appear in the newest version.
According to WENN, MacArthur's a big fan of the new version that stars Alex O'Loughlin, Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park, and Scott Caan. He's also been approached to make a guest appearance.
MacArthur recently said, "This one's going to be a hit. It's got a good cast and good plots. They've asked me to appear in the new show. I'll do it when the time is right."
What do you think? What role should MacArthur play? Perhaps playing...
