"I am the person I am today because of the people that help me... and the people that hurt me." Vertical has revealed the official trailer for a film titled Lola, marking the feature directorial debut of actress Nicola Peltz Beckham (formerly known just Nicola Peltz - most will recognize her from her role in Transformers: Age of Extinction or on "Bates Motel"). Not to be confused with the other indie sci-fi film titled Lola from last year, this is an entirely different one. Peltz Beckham also stars as the titular Lola James. Lola works to save enough money to get her little brother, Arlo, out of their toxic home. Arlo keeps her hopeful, until one tragic night, when her whole world gets uprooted. From that moment on, nothing will ever be the same. The cast includes Virginia Madsen, Trevor Long, Luke David Blumm, Raven Goodwin, Sunil Narkar, Stephen Graybill,...

This story about Chris Mundy and his series “Ozark” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
After four seasons of weaving and bobbing their way through money laundering, evading the watchful eye of the FBI and keeping a scary Mexican drug cartel’s deadlier impulses at bay — all while maintaining a dinner-on-the-table nuclear family unit — the Byrde family (led by Emmy nominees Jason Bateman and Laura Linney) finally seemed ready fly the coop in style in the final season of “Ozark.” Or did they? In a recent interview, showrunner Chris Mundy (who is also nominated for best drama and writing) explained. (Spoilers within!)

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “Ozark” Season 4, Part 2, including the ending in the series finale.]
When the final season of “Ozark” begins, Wendy (Laura Linney) lays the family’s cards on the table. Hearing one too many wisecracks from Jonah (Skylar Gaertner), who’s still understandably upset over his uncle’s death, she snaps.
“You want to be a smart ass? You want to hate me? Fine,” she says. “[But] with our foundation — everything this family has sacrificed, everything — it’s going to at least give us the power to do whatever good we want to do. We can be the most powerful family in the Midwest, with the full endorsement of the FBI to boot.”
“People will find out where the money came from,” Jonah says, not yet backing down.
“You need to grow up,” Wendy replies. “This is America. People don’t care where your fortune came from, and in two election cycles, it’ll be just some myth,...

This article contains spoilers for Ozark season 4.
Netflix’s decision to split Ozark’s final season into two separate parts seems to have worked. Audiences are left impatiently wondering what will happen to Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman), Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney), and Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner) when the hit crime series returns for its final run this summer.
Ozark season 4 episode 7 leaves off with Ruth furiously threatening to kill the Byrde patriarch after she thinks that they are to blame for the death of her cousin, Wyatt (Charlie Tahan). The actual perpetrator of the tragic homicide? Javi (Alfonso Herrera), the nephew of Navarro cartel head man Omar (Felix Solis).
While the latter has been the supposed enemy of the series from the beginning, it is becoming increasingly clear that the introduction of the former is where the main evil in the show is going to come from as we reach the finish line.

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “Ozark” Season 4, Part 1, through Episode 7, “Sanctified.”]
The beginning of “The Beginning of the End” — the inevitable title of “Ozark’s” Season 4 premiere — flashes forward to a scene still not put in context by the time Part 1 comes to a close. Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney) are driving down the road, accompanied by their children, Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) and Jonah (Skylar Gaertner), as well as the smooth voice of Sam Cooke singing “Bring It On Home To Me.” A meeting with the FBI is mentioned. An event at their casino, the Missouri Belle, comes up. A clock is put, presumably, on their time left in Missouri: only 48 hours to go.
As is prone to happen in the rare moments when the Byrdes are feeling good about things, disaster strikes. A car-carrier trailer is in the wrong lane, heading straight for the family minivan. Marty jerks the steering wheel to avoid a head-on collision,...

It’s been quite a year for Julia Garner, who reaped her first Emmy nomination this summer as Best Drama Supporting Actress for “Ozark.” Not long before that she picked up two SAG Award bids (for her individual and ensemble performance) and two Critics’ Choice noms. So the role of Ruth Langmore, a petty criminal helping a Chicago financier (Jason Bateman) launder drug money, has been a pretty lucrative one.
For her Emmy submission, Garner has chosen the season finale, “The Gold Coast.” In this episode, Marty (Bateman) gives Ruth instructions on how to handle drug money when he flees to Australia. But she’s got to contend with her ex-con father, Cade (Trevor Long), who’s blackmailing her for cash. Rather than give into his demands, she spills a dark secret to her cousin, Wyatt (Charlie Tahan), fracturing their relationship.

From the beginning “Ozark” star Julia Garner was eager to play Ruth Langmore because of “how complex she was.” A teenage crook who comes from a long line of career criminals, Ruth is desperate to escape her desolate life in a Missouri trailer park. So when Chicago financial planner Marty Byrd (Jason Bateman) enlists her to help him launder money for a vicious cartel, she’s determined to prove herself capable. Watch our exclusive video interview with Garner above.

Get ready for a potential “Ozark” Emmy sweep, as the gritty Netflix series could receive nominations in all four main acting categories: Best Drama Actor for Jason Bateman as Marty Byrde, Best Drama Actress for Laura Linney as Wendy Byrde, Best Drama Supporting Actress for Julia Garner as Ruth Langmore and Best Drama Supporting Actor for Peter Mullan as Jacob Snell.
As of this writing, Gold Derby’s racetrack odds peg nominations for Bateman and Linney and a victory for Garner, with Mullan in seventh place to receive a bid. Then there’s new cast member Janet McTeer as Helen Pierce, who’s also a dark horse contender for a supporting actress nom.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Ozark” Season 2, including the ending. For a spoiler-free review, read IndieWire’s initial reaction.]
If the first season of “Ozark” saw the Byrde family in denial about their circumstances and trying to bargain their way to freedom, then the second season moves through depression and into acceptance. The Kübler-Ross model for processing grief may not seem like a fitting comparison for a family sent spiraling from one catastrophe to the next, but remember this: That model isn’t actually for processing grief; it’s for people who know they’re going to die, and that seems about right for Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney), if a bit dark for their two kids.
Under this framework, the ending is reasonable, but it’s also indicative of what went wrong with Season 2. Chris Mundy’s thrilling first season hit the gas so hard it feels like these new episodes are constantly slamming on the brakes,...

The Byrde family is still waist-deep in the corrupt life they've created for themselves in the Ozarks.
Ozark Season 2 picks up right where Season 1 left off but something becomes clear as it progresses -- the women are in control now.
Jason Bateman was not only the draw for the first season, but the most compelling character as Marty Byrde struggled to come to terms with his formerly hidden illegal activities taking on a direction as different as the path he was on with his cheating wife, Wendy (Laura Linney).
The focus of Season 2, though, resets a bit as the Byrde family settles into life on the Lake of the Ozarks.
After the murder of their boss, the Byrdes work fast on their feet to find a way to stay in business. The harder they work, the dirtier they get their hands.

TV critics expecting to get even more intel on Netflix’s Ozark Season 2 or, 3 may have come away from the hot series TCA Q&A disappointed, with Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, and Julia Garner all deferring to writer/producers who were not on stage. Bateman did, however, promise the writers “understand the audience deserves an escalation if you do more episodes” because viewers “don’t want redundancies.”
“There is so much good television now the demand is high to keep bringing it,” Bateman said, suggesting “plot escalation” and “emotional complexity, adding characters” and killing off others. It’s a fun process and Ozark writers “manage it really well,” he added, tantalizingly.
The money laundering aspect of the show, and the law and order of the Missouri Ozarks is hopefully “tamped down and does not bore you with the weeds and mechanics of that stuff,” Bateman forecast.

The money laundering aspect of the show, and the law and order of the Missouri Ozarks is hopefully “tamped down and does not bore you with the weeds and mechanics of that stuff,” Bateman forecast.

Jason Bateman revisits the “Redneck Riviera” next month, unspooling Season 2 of his acclaimed drama “Ozark,” and Netflix just released a Season 1 recap for the uninitiated. To best convey the popular Missouri tourist destination’s underbelly — as imagined by series co-creators Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams — the streaming site enlisted lifelong resident Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner), a 19-year-old money-laundering protégé.
In the two-minute clip, Ruth rehashes the critical plot points of Episodes 1 through 10 while visiting her imprisoned father, Cade (Trevor Long). Ruth manages Lickity Splitz, a local strip club serving as a front for the illicit activities of recent transplant Marty Byrde (Bateman). The former white-collar criminal relocated his family south to appease his drug cartel boss, promising he could hide half a billion in dirty cash. But Marty’s pursuits conflict with the Langmore clan’s local lawlessness, and Cade wants him killed. Three-time Oscar nominee Laura Linney plays Marty’s wife,...

Today Jason Bateman turned out to be a double threat Emmy nominee for his Netflix/Media Rights Capital noir series Ozark, not just earning a nomination for lead actor in a drama series, but also for directing as well.
While Bateman has continually been lauded for his comedy acting chops throughout the years, largely for Arrested Development (Tbd on whether the comedy series will season 6; the series season 5 received zero love from Emmy voters), it’s arguably the first time that he’s been recognized in the directing arena, and he’s been exercising that creative muscle for quite some time not just with indie features such as The Family Fang and Bad Words, but going as far back to the late ’80s when he directed episodes for NBC’s Valerie, a sitcom on which he also starred.

The Byrdes are back. Netflix released a first-look teaser announcing that the second season of Ozark starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney will return for your bingeing pleasure on August 31.
The 40-second teaser for the crime drama — watch it above — gives us flashes of the second season that features a voice-over of Linney’s Wendy saying, “We’ve done lots of things, things we said we would never do,” to which Bateman’s Marty replies, “People make choices, Wendy. Choices have consequences.” The show also stars Julia Garner and Season 2 newcomer Janet McTeer.
There are plenty of dark, foreboding moments and, well, some more dark, foreboding moments in the teaser before it finally ends with a gunshot and Wendy saying: “So that’s it? We go back in that house, we go to bed, wake up in the morning and we kiss the kids?”
Marty responds, “That’s exactly what we do.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from Season 1 of “Ozark.”]
When “Ozark” left the Byrde family in the Season 1 finale, they were in even deeper trouble than before. Marty (Jason Bateman) had almost convinced his family to leave him behind for a new life, but in the end, they decided to stick it out together in the Ozarks, come what may.
At an Emmy For Your Consideration event held at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood on Saturday, Bateman revealed that the new season will pick right up on that night following the new deal that Marty had made with the Jacob Snell (Peter Mullan), a local crime lord who specializes in heroin.
“There is the escalation,” Bateman told Variety’s Jenelle Riley, who moderated the panel. “It was $8 million in this [past] season that the Byrdes had to try to figure out how to work with. And Marty’s got $50 million now that he’s got to wash. And we’re...

Chicago – Andrew Dominik delivered one of the best movies of the ’00s the last time he worked with Brad Pitt when the two made “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.” And so there was intense anticipation for their follow-up collaboration, “Killing Them Softly,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD. Call it a sophomore slump but “Kts” is a film with tons of style and some interesting ideas that nonetheless feels like a dirge and plays like a film twice as long as its running time.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Based on “Cogan’s Trade” by George V. Higgins (the name change is the first thing to raise eyebrows), “Killing Them Softly” attempts to graft a commentary on our increasingly dire economic times with a thriller about a mob hitman with a trio of assignments. Pitt plays the guy brought in to clean things up when a couple of numbskulls (Scoot McNairy & Ben Mendelsohn,...

Director Andrew Dominik discusses his critically-acclaimed drama Killing Them Softly, currently available on Blu-ray and DVD
Although it didn't take off at the box office like I had hoped it would, director Andrew Dominik's brilliant Killing Them Softly was one of my Top 10 movies of 2012. Chocked full of brilliant performances from Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini, Richard Jenkins, Ray Liotta, and Scoot McNairy, this adaptation of George V. Higgins centers on the fallout from a high stakes poker game robbery, set against the backdrop of the 2008 Presidential elections. I recently had the chance to speak with Andrew Dominik about his fascinating drama, which debuts on Blu-ray and DVD March 26. Here's what he had to say.
I'm not normally a huge fan of deleted scenes, even in movies I love, but I really enjoyed these deleted scenes. Are these the ones you were trying to fit in and you just didn't have room for?...

Director Andrew Dominik talks about his new dramatic comedy Killing Them Softly, arriving in theaters nationwide November 30
Australian filmmaker Andrew Dominik first made his mark with the 2000 drama Chopper, a film that introduced the world to Eric Bana, who was primarily known as an Australian comedian. He returned seven years later with The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, starring Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck. This weekend, the director is back with his third feature, the fascinating Killing Them Softly, and since there is only a five-year gap between projects this time, I can only hope this means we only have to wait three years until his next picture. Brad Pitt stars in this adaptation of George V. Higgins' novel Cogan's Trade as a mob enforcer who tries to unravel the bizarre robbery of a high-stakes poker game, brilliantly set in New Orleans 2008, against the backdrop...

A new trailer for director Andrew Dominik’s crime drama Killing Them Soflty has been released. The film stars Brad Pitt as a mob enforcer called in to investigate the robbery of a high-stakes card game. The film’s first trailer was pretty great, but this clip ups my anticipation level even more. We see a bit more of the plot and character interactions, and there’s a scene set in the rain that shows off some fantastic visuals. Dominik displayed tremendous talent with The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford, and I’m highly encouraged by what we’ve seen of his second go-around with Pitt thus far. Hit the jump to watch the new trailer. The film also stars Richard Jenkins, James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta, Scoot McNairy, and Ben Mendelsohn. Killing Them Softly opens November 30th. Via IGN.
