Jason Statham has become one of the biggest action stars of this time. The 57-year-old English actor and producer got his start as a model in the 1990s. Outside of modeling, he was a performer in a number of music videos throughout his early career in the mid to late 1990s. He made his feature film debut in 1998, when he played a character named Bacon in the Guy Ritchie-directed film Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels.

While his career was technically born in the '90s, Statham is a 21st-century action star at heart. After working with Ritchie on Lock, Stock, he teamed up with the director again for the 2000 film Snatch. This action-caper movie made a decent splash at the box office, garnering a haul of over $83 million worldwide. It was in the 2000s that Statham's career really kicked off, transforming him into the high-paid, recognizable actor he is today.

Of all seasons of "True Detective," season 2 remains the most maligned. But I always appreciate an attempt to peer under the carapace of sunny California and see what wretched beasts spring forth, and I think season 2 of Nic Pizzolatto's crime thriller series did as good a job as any of probing the dark side of the City of Angels. The same could be said of the first season, I suppose, though the swampy environs of deep Louisiana seem to lend themselves more to a murky noir mystery than SoCal. Regardless, it was when trying to find other shows with a similar tone to the first and second season of "True Detective" that I came across the "Red Riding" trilogy.

Boston-born, Australian-raised actor Tom Long, whose credits include the series East of Everything, SeaChange and Young Lions and the movies The Dish and Two Hands, died from encephalitis on Saturday, aged 51.

Long was forced to quit acting after he collapsed on stage during a performance of the play Coranderrk: We Will Show the Country at the Sydney Opera House in July 2012.

Diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, he underwent chemotherapy, bone marrow transplants and natural therapies to treat the disease.

He was in remission after going to the Us last April for a medical trial in which his T cells were harvested and genetically modified to attack his cancer cells.

Screenwise CEO Denise Roberts said: “He fought the hard fight and was given the all clear. The happiness and relief pulled out from under him. So unfair.”

Long’s wife Rebecca Fleming told news outlets in a statement that he was “really at peace and in his home” when he expired “Gratitude is our way of getting through this,” she said. “Gratitude for all these amazing experiences with people who have cared for Tom and the lessons we’ve learnt along the way. Tom’s mindset was always really positive because he felt really supported … by the Australian people and our community.”

The Detroit Film Critics Society is pleased to announce the Best of 2015 winners in ten categories. The society was founded in spring 2007 and consists of a group of seventeen film critics who write or broadcast in the Detroit area as well as other major cities within a 150-mile radius of the city including Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, and Flint, Michigan and Toledo, Ohio.

Each critic submitted their top five picks in the following categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Ensemble, and Breakthrough, Best Screenplay, and Best Documentary. A Texas-based inventor goes on a hunt to solve a 300-year-old mystery in documentary Tim’s Vermeer.

Dutch master painter Johannes Vermeer is lauded for his use of photo-realistic painting techniques, but he created his paintings 150 years before the invention of photography.

Inventor Tim Jenison takes on the challenge, traveling to Holland, visiting artist David Hockney in Yorkshire and even going to Buckingham Palace, all over a decade to discover how Vermeer created his works. As he learns, Jenison then tried to recreate Vermeer’s masterpiece “The Music Lesson.”

Tim’s Vermeer was written by magician duo Penn & Teller. Teller directed the film, while Penn Jillette produced and narrates.

The movie was screened in a limited number of theaters, grossing $1.5 million and garnering high praise from critics and moviegoers. Detroit News‘ Tom Long calls the film “unexpectedly dazzling.

Transcendence, the science-fiction artificial intelligence film stars Johnny Depp as a man who uses his own technology to save his consciousness and complete his lifework alongside his wife, played by Rebecca Hall.

In his directorial debut, cinematographer Wally Pfister, a longtime Christopher Nolan collaborator, tackles the frightening possibilities of technology. Transcendence, which has drawn ample comparisons to Spike Jonze’s Her, shows a mad scientist of sorts, who labors to create a sentient and omniscient super-machine that could change the world while existing as such a machine himself.

Critics Review ‘Transcendence’

Transcendence, despite having Depp and Hall onboard, as well as Morgan Freeman and Kate Mara, has failed to win over critics. It’s been criticized for having a lack of focus and a poorer execution of its theme than has been seen in Nolan’s Inception, the Oscar-nominated Her and the Matrix series. The few positive reviews felt that Transcendence transcended its sci-fi genre.

Oculus stars Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites as grown siblings seeking revenge on a cursed mirror that destroyed their lives and countless others before theirs.

Directed by Mike Flanagan, Oculus intertwines the narratives of your Kaylie (Annalise Basso) and Tim (Garrett Ryan) with that of them 10 years later (Gillan and Thwaites). In the interveening time, Kaylie has been obsessing over the night they lost both parents (Katee Sackhoff and Rory Cochrane), while Tim has been locked down in a treatment facility until he no longer believes a mirror made him kill his father. Oculus is a horror genre film that focuses far more on the psyche than the violence of the supernatural.

Critics Review 'Oculus'

In reviewing Oculus, critics largely found Flanagan’s bravely near-bloodless film refreshing. Some even suggested that the film was not only good compared to other horror films, but generally interesting as a piece of cinema.

Indie film darling Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) stars in the thriller movie In Secret.

Set in 1860 Paris, the movie tells the story of Therese Raquin (Elizabeth Olsen), who was forced into a loveless marriage to her sickly cousin (Tom Felton, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1) by her domineering aunt (Jessica Lange, TV’s American Horror Story). But when Therese meets her husband’s alluring friend Laurent (Oscar Isaac), the two start an illicit affair that has tragic consequences.

In Secret is based on the 19th century novel Therese Raquin by Emile Zola and the stage play of the same name by Neal Bell. The film is the first directed by actor Charlie Stratton (Notes From Underground), who also wrote the screenplay.

Rated R, the movie was released in a limited number of theaters and received mixed reviews from critics and moviegoers.

Veronica Mars, the fan-funded silver screen reboot of the beloved TV series, picks up several years after the events in its last episode, with the titular character embarking on making a name for herself at a high-profile New York City law firm.

The relative peace of her mainstream job is short-lived, as Veronica (Kristen Bell) soon learns that her ex-boyfriend Logan (Jason Dohring) is a prime suspect in the murder of his famous girlfriend. In no time, she’s back in Neptune sleuthing her way to the truth. When she’s not on task to exonerate her onetime adversary, Veronica takes some time to reunite with her old pals, and even winds up at her 10-year high school reunion.

The "Hart of Dixie" fan-favorite just landed a recurring role in Fox's midseason comedy "Enlisted," TVLine reports.

Philips joins the army sitcom as an "entitled and inexperienced 2nd Lieutenant named Schneeberger who thinks very highly of himself." Schneeberger's smug attitude will cause him to butt heads with Geoff Stults' Pete -- and bond with Angelique Cabral's Jill.

So what does Philips' new gig mean for his scene-stealing "Hart of Dixie" character, sweet southern gentleman Tom Long -- is he leaving Bluebell?

Not to worry, "Hart of Dixie" fans: since his "Enlisted" role is not a long stint, and the new sitcom wraps shooting this month, he will continue to appear on The CW's southern drama -- which is good news for Tom's new wife Wanda.

20th Century Fox has revealed the details on their upcoming blu-ray release of Sir Ridley Scott's science fiction film Prometheus. The details of the set, and the trailer they put out for it, promises answers to the many questions viewers had after seeing the film....

Prometheus was a very polarizing film this Summer. Some loved it, others hated, but generally everyone agreed it wasn't what they were expecting. Personally, I enjoyed it for it's outwardly blockbuster set pieces, and had fun picking through the various themes and ideas the film presented. I've been interested in seeing all that had been cut from the movie, that would supposedly answer many of the questions or blank spots left in the film. Taylor Kitsch (TV’s Friday Night Lights) takes on aliens in the action movie Battleship, which was inspired by the old Hasbro boardgame.

Kitsch plays Lieutenant Alex Hopper, a naval weapons officer assigned to the destroyer USS John Paul, which ends up being humanity’s last hope against a global alien invasion. During "Dark Shadows," Sunday night's polarizing episode of "Mad Men," Don Draper's happy wife (played by Jessica Pare) took a shot at the soap opera "Dark Shadows" -- a fortuitously timed reference, since the film adaptation of the series opened in theaters last Friday.

"Who the hell is this woman?" Megan mockingly asked while helping a friend rehearse some over-the-top lines from the show. She then added: "I don't think I've seen [a soap opera] this bad. And isn't it supposed to be scary?" Later, she refers to "Dark Shadows" as "a piece of crap."
