Dark Sky Films has released the first trailer for A Desert, director Joshua Erkman’s feature debut that blends hilistic neo-noir and horror.
A Desert releases in select theaters on May 2, 2025.
In the noir horror thriller, “A past his prime photographer heads out on a road trip across the American Southwest to recapture the magic and success of his previous work. Instead, he finds himself thrust into the dark and chaotic underbelly of America and unwittingly drags his wife and a shady private detective down into this nightmare world with him.”
David Yow, Kai Lennox (Green Room), Sarah Lind (A Wounded Fawn), Zachary Ray Sherman (“Under the Banner of Heaven”), Ashley B. Smith, Rob Zabrecky (A Ghost Story), and S.A. Griffin (Vegas Vacation) star.
I wrote in my review out of Tribeca Film Fest, “A Desert reaches a fitting conclusion, thematically and tonally, but the steadfast refusal for tidy answers may polarize.

The Dead Thing
Behind every film are a mass of filmmakers turning a script, maybe even a dream of an individual or handful of people, into reality. Elric Kane's The Dead Thing and Joshua Erkman's A Desert are distinctly different films. The Dead Thing follows a young woman, in a mesmerising performance from Blu Hunt, who begins a passionate affair with a man who hides a secret. In A Desert, Harold (David Yow), a private investigator, is hired by a distraught wife (Sarah Lind) to find her husband, Alex (Kai Lennox), who has disappeared while on a photography trip in California's Yucca Valley.
Rosencrans' previous credits include Dalila Droege's 2022 thriller No More Time, about a couple seeking sanctuary in a remote mountain town from a virus that turns people into murderers, and the 2020 documentary Feather And Pine, about the effects of The Great Recession on a logging community in.

Its been a quiet year for Jennifer Lawrence who made headlines in 2023 thanks to her performance in No Hard Feelings, the raunchy comedy she starred in alongside Andrew Barth Feldman. Lawrence recently wrapped filming on arguably her most intriguing upcoming project, Die, My Love, which also stars Robert Pattinson and Lakeith Stanfield. Deadline has the first look at the upcoming film, showing a close-up still of Lawrence, the main character in the film who becomes entangled in a spicy love triangle where Pattinson plays her husband and Stanfield plays her lover. Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek are also part of the Die, My Love cast, which is being billed as a horror thriller, with Sarah Lind, Victor Zinick Jr., Debs Howard, Marcus Della Rosa, Philip Forest Lewitski, and Saylor McPherson filling out the rest of the supporting ensemble. Martin Scorsese will also produce.

Set in the tumultuous 1960s, The Curse of the Necklace follows the Davis family as they grapple with personal struggles and a sinister supernatural threat. Laura Davis recently separated from her alcoholic husband Frank, taking their daughters Ellen and Judy to start a new chapter. Still hoping to reconcile, Frank tries winning Laura back with a beautiful antique necklace. But little does the family know this “gift” harbors a dark secret with grave consequences.
The film immerses viewers in the unsteady period of the late 1960s through the lens of the Davis family’s upheaval. Sarah Lind delivers a grounded portrayal of Laura, a mother striving to shield her children from the fallout of her estranged relationship.
Violet and Madeleine McGraw similarly give authentic performances as sisters adapting to their changing family dynamic. Henry Thomas also turns in a compelling portrayal of Frank, conveying the complexity of a spouse torn between remorse and volatile tendencies.

Alex Clark is a renowned photographer embarking on a solitary journey through the bleak desert landscapes of the American Southwest. Well known for his striking photos capturing abandoned buildings taken over by nature, Alex hopes to recapture the fire of his early career and rekindle his passion for photography.
Now middle-aged with his creative spark feeling faded, he leaves behind technology to let his wanderings get lost in nature’s reclamation of what remains after civilization’s fleeting presence.
Directed and co-written by Joshua Erkman in his feature debut, A Desert blends elements of neo-noir and psychological horrorfilm to explore Alex’s literal and metaphorical voyage. Erkman deftly guides leading man Kai Lennox’s compelling performance as the isolated artist searching for meaning through his craft.
While calling wife Sarah Lind each night for comfort, Alex finds himself drawn into growing darkness amid the film’s decayed yet strangely beautiful Southwestern locations.

Drive far enough down a deserted highway, and you’ll eventually find spots where the remnants of a civilized society met the unrelenting forces of death, entropy, and decay. Crumbling buildings give way to new ecosystems as Mother Nature takes back the spaces that humanity briefly leased. These abandoned spaces are reminders that there’s nothing we can do on this planet that the universe won’t ultimately undo. Our only choice in the matter is whether we see that as depressing or poetic.
Count Alex Clark (Kai Lennox) among the latter camp. The acclaimed photographer spent much of his youth ripping through the American Southwest in a car by himself, deliberately trying to get lost so that he’d eventually find cool pictures to snap. His photos of decaying buildings earned him his first brushes with fame, and a midlife crisis has now prompted him to try and recreate his original formula for success.

‘A Desert’ Review: Joshua Erkman’s Debut Feature Is an Intriguing but Murky, Horror-Adjacent Mystery

It’s easy to get lost in the desert, a fate that befalls Joshua Erkman’s debut feature. While his protagonists eventually get dangerously close to some lurid, lethal goings-on, this self-described “neo-noir horror” leaves a vague and rudderless final impression despite its intriguing-enough buildup. “A Desert” aims for the enigmatic, supernaturally-tinged mystery of something like Lynch’s “Lost Highway,” but in the end lacks the tension and atmosphere to pull that tricky gambit off. Nonetheless, its arty sojourn through backroads-thriller terrain is likely to gain some supporters as a Tribeca Fest midnight section premiere.
An opening sequence expanded upon much later introduces the idea that what we’re watching is some sort of purgatorial film loop that traps the unwary. But like several other conceits here, it’s never developed enough to take finite shape. Still, we first meet Alex Clark (Kai Lennox) as he’s exploring a dark,...

A road trip through the American Southwest opens a puzzle box of weirdness and nihilism in director Joshua Erkman’s feature debut, A Desert, a captivating and stylized blend of neo-noir and horror. There’s no handholding or easy answers in this genre-bender, but its richly textured world and morally complex characters ensure an unpredictable voyage worth taking.
Photographer Alex Clark (Green Room’s Kai Lennox) embarks on a solo road trip to capture abandoned roadside structures and buildings in desolate stretches of Southwestern desert, hoping to reinvigorate his stalled career. Alex smartly approaches his solo trip with caution, with frequent calls home to his wife Sam (A Wounded Fawn’s Sarah Lind) on updates. That’s disrupted when he overhears alarming sounds coming from next door during his stay at a seedy motel. Just like the process of taking any good photograph, it takes a while for writer-director Joshua Erkmans feature debut A Desert to frame everything just right so that its full striking vision can be felt. This may take a bit of arranging, including moments where the often refreshingly patient horror film retraces its steps, but that only makes the images it creates all the more potent. While the film initially centers on a creator of such images in the roaming photographer Alex, played by Kai Lennox of recent series like Perry Mason and Fargo, it soon expands outwards. First, we get to know a couple of strangers that he encounters on his trip through the American Southwest, but they only represent the beginning of the trouble that will consume everyone in Alexs orbit. There is his wife Sam, played by Sarah Lind of the underrated recent horror film A Wounded Fawn,...

Audiences of all ages adore cozy mysteries.
Within the genre, Hallmark mysteries have reigned supreme for years.
The question is which Hallmark mystery movie franchises are the best.
The best cozies contain idyllic settings, well-established characters, and elements of romance and humor. They also need staying power, which is why the multi-movie series are usually the most popular.
With those points in mind, here's how several of them compare.

Jesse Metcalfe plays Jeff Jackson, a medically retired police detective living in the picturesque setting of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. He solves crimes with the help of a doctor and medical examiner, played by Sarah Lind.
This is one of the worst Hallmark mystery franchises in terms of believability. Characters repeatedly get away with things real-life doctors and cops could not do, such as freely sharing confidential information with multiple other characters.

Another problem is the overarching storyline of...

Director Joshua Erkman’s feature debut, “A Desert,” will be launched for world sales by Yellow Veil Pictures ahead of its Tribeca Film Festival premiere in June.
The film stars Kai Lennox, David Yow (“I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore”) and Sarah Lind (“A Wounded Fawn”). Cinematographer Jay Keitel shot the film and Ty Segall composed its soundtrack and original score.
“A Desert” marks the first production from Yellow Veil Pictures in partnership with Capes & Fog, a production company founded by Erkman.
The film follows a past-his-prime photographer on a road trip across the American Southwest hoping to recapture the magic and success of his previous work. Instead, he finds himself thrust into the dark and chaotic underbelly of America and unwittingly drags his wife and a shady private detective down into the nightmare world with him.

Happy New Year everyone, and welcome to my faves of ‘22. It’s become redundant to say “it was another great year” but goddammit I can’t lie: 2022 was loaded with quality horror, up and down the line, across all media.
This means as with every recent year, I have missed several releases – a few of the big ones, and several smaller yet intriguing entries. My frequent bouts of absenteeism this time around weren’t because of any bouts of laziness or writer’s malaise, but rather due to working on my first book, A Cut Below: A Celebration Of B Horror Movies, 1950s - 1980s, coming this year from McFarland Publishing! Twelve film festivals each housing essays on five films with a common theme. I can hardly wait to share it with the world. End of plug!

(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)
The Movie: "A Wounded Fawn"
Where You Can Stream It: Shudder
The Pitch: Rod Serling's opening narration for "The Twilight Zone" teased "a dimension not only of sight and sound, but of mind." It's in this realm that filmmaker Travis Stevens is most comfortable, and the one he presents in "A Wounded Fawn." Stevens' third directed feature is his gnarliest thus far, and bodes well for the kind of original horror movie that fans have clamored for since the first jump scare.
The whole bloody affair of "A Wounded Fawn" concerns jaded museum curator Meredith Tanning (Sarah Lind) who lives out this writer's personal nightmare of jumping back into the dating pool only to find herself in a serial killer's living room.

The minds behind Jakob's Wife and Werewolves Within are teaming up for A Wounded Fawn. The horror thriller revolves around a woman attempting to get back into dating after escaping a toxic relationship, only to land in the crosshairs of a mentally unhinged serial killer.
Sarah Lind and Josh Ruben lead the cast of A Wounded Fawn alongside Malin Barr, Katie Kuang, Laksmi Hedemark, and Tanya Everett. Co-written and directed by Travis Stevens, the film takes audiences through a psychedelic game of cat-and-mouse with haunting visuals reminiscent of the Giallo genre and Greek fables.

The new horror film A Wounded Fawn, out now on Shudder, starts out seeming like it is a story you've heard before. There is a serial killer named Bruce (Josh Ruben) who thinks he has found his next victim. We already saw him brutally murder a woman, Malin Barr’s Kate, in her home, then steal a piece of art that she had just won at an auction. While he is able to put on a friendly face, we can see that Bruce is more than likely to now kill again. He has managed to win over the unsuspecting Meredith (Sarah Lind) and convince her to come to a remote house in the woods for an intimate getaway. Again, this all sounds like it could be rather familiar, though it is very much not. Meredith thinks this will be her chance to get back into dating, but darker forces have already consumed Bruce.

Shudder has developed a knack for being one of the most well-curated streaming services out there. For as much as other services like Netflix or HBO Max have much more to offer in terms of quantity, to the subscriber, those offerings can feel like a ton of fluff. With Shudder, it is a more targeted, "less is more" approach. But that's not to say they don't have a little something for everyone. Case in point, within a small window of time, they can release a sweet vampire comedy like "Blood Relatives," then turn right around and release one of the weirdest movies of the year with "A Wounded Fawn," which just made its debut on the service.
Hailing from director Travis Stevens ("Jakob's Wife"), "A Wounded Fawn" follows the story of Meredith Tanning (Sarah Lind), a local museum curator who is dipping her toe back into the dating pool, only...

Shudder just dropped a December treat in the form of Travis Stevens' new surrealist cat-and-mouse horror film "A Wounded Fawn," starring Sarah Lind and Josh Ruben. After a successful run as a producer on genre documentaries such as "Jodorowsky's Dune" and memorable features like "Cheap Thrills" and "We Are Still Here," Stevens moved into the director's chair with the housebound thriller "Girl on the Third Floor" and the delightful vampire comedy "Jakob's Wife." For multiple reasons, "A Wounded Fawn" may be the most personal film Stevens has made to date, showcasing his passion for subversive art and mythology inside a classically structured story updated for modern horror audiences. Using the ancient Greek female archetypes of the Furies as a jumping-off point, "A Wounded Fawn" follows a sheltered museum curator (Lind) who finds her inner strength after doing battle with a charming art collector (Ruben) who turns out to be a serial killer.

They say that those whom the gods wish to kill, they first make mad. Bruce (Josh Ruben) is such a man, a serial killer in the process of grooming his latest victim, Meredith (Sarah Lind). But what Bruce doesn’t know is that, in turn, he too is being stalked – by the Furies of Greek legend. A Wounded Fawn is a bold exercise in experimental filmmaking with expands upon a horror premise with elements of fantasy and dance. Its director, Travis Stevens, has worked as a producer for many years – we last spoke about his work on high octane heist thriller 68 Kill – so when we met to discuss this new project I asked him why, instead of playing it safe, he chose to make the leap into directing first with Jakob’s Wife and then with this.

The holiday season is now upon us, and it seems only right that we’re heading into December with a brand new Christmas-themed genre movie arriving in theaters later this week.

In her 4-star Tribeca review, Heather Wixson wrote that Travis Stevens' latest film, A Wounded Fawn, is a "cinematic reckoning with a Greek twist," and ahead of the movie's December 1st release on Shudder, we have a look at the tense trailer featuring co-stars Sarah Lind and Josh Ruben on a weekend getaway that transforms into a surreal and deadly fight for survival.

"Have you ever experienced anything weird here before?" Shudder has revealed a trailer for A Wounded Fawn, which is described as an "artfully chaotic descent into bloodlust, monstrous misogyny, and euphoric comeuppances of the most punishing pleasures." The celebrated psychedelic horror film will be streaming on Shudder in December, after premiering at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. It also played at Fantastic Fest and FrightFest. A serial killer brings an unsuspecting victim on a weekend getaway to add another body to his ever-growing count. She's buying into his faux charms, he's eagerly lusting for blood. What could possibly go wrong? A Wounded Fawn marks the third feature directed by Travis Stevens (also of Girl on the Third Floor and Jakob's Wife), who has long been celebrated for his work as an indie producer. This stars Sarah Lind, Josh Ruben, and Malin Barr. Looks super freaky! A very uncomfortable watch.

A Wounded Fawn Trailer: A Killer Cat-And-Mouse Game With A Surrealist Twist Hits Shudder In December

If you haven't already noticed, Shudder has been on a roll with its original acquisitions this year. From "Mad God" to "Resurrection" and everything else in between, it has proven itself as the premier horror speciality streamer. Now, it looks to add to its increasingly demented collection with Travis Stevens' surrealist rollercoaster "A Wounded Fawn."
You think you might know where this movie is going based on the first half of its new trailer. An obviously creepy man (Josh Ruben) lures an art collector named Meredith (Sarah Lind) to his secluded cabin in the woods. When she realizes that he may have sinister motivations, their dangerous cat-and-mouse game commences. However, there's something much more sinister going on behind this conventional plot, if the bizarre imagery involving demons and snakes throughout the trailer proves anything.

Travis Stevens' "A Wounded Fawn" is unlike anything I've seen all year, and that's always something that gets my attention. I see a lot of movies (it's the job!), so when something comes along that feels different, I take notice. While the film may remind you of others, it's told in such a unique way, with such a singular voice, that I couldn't help but be impressed. Through in some gorgeous, grainy 16mm footage, and you've got a stew going.
In a prologue, we meet art broker Bruce Ernst (indie horror mainstay Josh Ruben), who is bidding on a very rare sculpture. Bruce ultimately loses the bidding to Kate (Malin Barr), another broker. And later, he shows up at her house with an offer she can't refuse: a ton of money if she'll hand the sculpture over to him. She agrees and invites him in, at which point we learn...

Horror gets a Greek twist in A Wounded Fawn, Travis Stevens’ latest project that features Josh Ruben as a serial killer who gets more than he bargains for when he takes a potential victim away for a planned vacation from hell, but she ends up putting him through the proverbial ringer for his misdeeds. Watching the evolution of Stevens’ career as a filmmaker has been extremely fascinating over the last few years and A Wounded Fawn demonstrates that he’s someone who is looking for new ways to challenge himself as a storyteller. And while I am a fan of both of his previous films, I feel like A Wounded Fawn is easily his most ambitious effort yet in a variety of ways as both Stevens and co-writer Nathan Faudree find some clever ways of twisting our expectations by infusing their slasher story with a heightened sense of mythological surrealism,...

This weekend is supposed to be a rebirth for Meredith (Sarah Lind). After battling the demons of an abusive relationship, she’s accepted an invitation of romantic seclusion from a man (Josh Ruben’s Bruce) she’s just met. Her friends demand to know all the details, but she’s not quite ready to share them. This might just be an isolated yet necessary sexual encounter that ends upon her return to the city. No reason to let him move into her head psychologically or her inner circle prematurely if she’ll just be forgetting about him in short order. That Meredith is willingly allowing this stranger to take her to his cabin in the woods carries more danger in and of itself anyway—a premise screaming monstrous home invasion. Travis Stevens complies.
