Dark Sky Films has released the first trailer for A Desert, director Joshua Erkman’s feature debut that blends hilistic neo-noir and horror.

A Desert releases in select theaters on May 2, 2025.

In the noir horror thriller, “A past his prime photographer heads out on a road trip across the American Southwest to recapture the magic and success of his previous work. Instead, he finds himself thrust into the dark and chaotic underbelly of America and unwittingly drags his wife and a shady private detective down into this nightmare world with him.”

Sisters Violet and Madeleine McGraw are escaping horror for their next joint project. Violet and Madeleine, best known for their work on genre films like M3GAN and The Black Phone, respectively, will collaborate on a holiday feature described as a mix of two legendary Christmas movies: Home Alone and Die Hard. Variety reports that the yet-to-be-named movie will begin filming in Las Vegas next month.

Madeleine, the older of the sisters, began her career with early roles in films like American Sniper before working on the series Outcast and voicing Bonnie in Toy Story 4. The Dead Thing

Behind every film are a mass of filmmakers turning a script, maybe even a dream of an individual or handful of people, into reality. Elric Kane's The Dead Thing and Joshua Erkman's A Desert are distinctly different films. The Dead Thing follows a young woman, in a mesmerising performance from Blu Hunt, who begins a passionate affair with a man who hides a secret. In A Desert, Harold (David Yow), a private investigator, is hired by a distraught wife (Sarah Lind) to find her husband, Alex (Kai Lennox), who has disappeared while on a photography trip in California's Yucca Valley.

Rosencrans' previous credits include Dalila Droege's 2022 thriller No More Time, about a couple seeking sanctuary in a remote mountain town from a virus that turns people into murderers, and the 2020 documentary Feather And Pine, about the effects of The Great Recession on a logging community in.

Its been a quiet year for Jennifer Lawrence who made headlines in 2023 thanks to her performance in No Hard Feelings, the raunchy comedy she starred in alongside Andrew Barth Feldman. Lawrence recently wrapped filming on arguably her most intriguing upcoming project, Die, My Love, which also stars Robert Pattinson and Lakeith Stanfield. Deadline has the first look at the upcoming film, showing a close-up still of Lawrence, the main character in the film who becomes entangled in a spicy love triangle where Pattinson plays her husband and Stanfield plays her lover. Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek are also part of the Die, My Love cast, which is being billed as a horror thriller, with Sarah Lind, Victor Zinick Jr., Debs Howard, Marcus Della Rosa, Philip Forest Lewitski, and Saylor McPherson filling out the rest of the supporting ensemble. Martin Scorsese will also produce.

Set in the tumultuous 1960s, The Curse of the Necklace follows the Davis family as they grapple with personal struggles and a sinister supernatural threat. Laura Davis recently separated from her alcoholic husband Frank, taking their daughters Ellen and Judy to start a new chapter. Still hoping to reconcile, Frank tries winning Laura back with a beautiful antique necklace. But little does the family know this “gift” harbors a dark secret with grave consequences.

The film immerses viewers in the unsteady period of the late 1960s through the lens of the Davis family’s upheaval. Sarah Lind delivers a grounded portrayal of Laura, a mother striving to shield her children from the fallout of her estranged relationship.

Violet and Madeleine McGraw similarly give authentic performances as sisters adapting to their changing family dynamic. Henry Thomas also turns in a compelling portrayal of Frank, conveying the complexity of a spouse torn between remorse and volatile tendencies.

Madeleine McGraw and her sister Violet McGraw have had separate successes in the horror genre, with Madeleine having a standout role in The Black Phone and Violet dealing with M3GAN (plus playing roles in the Mike Flanagan projects The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep). Drive far enough down a deserted highway, and you’ll eventually find spots where the remnants of a civilized society met the unrelenting forces of death, entropy, and decay. Crumbling buildings give way to new ecosystems as Mother Nature takes back the spaces that humanity briefly leased. These abandoned spaces are reminders that there’s nothing we can do on this planet that the universe won’t ultimately undo. Our only choice in the matter is whether we see that as depressing or poetic.

Count Alex Clark (Kai Lennox) among the latter camp. The acclaimed photographer spent much of his youth ripping through the American Southwest in a car by himself, deliberately trying to get lost so that he’d eventually find cool pictures to snap. His photos of decaying buildings earned him his first brushes with fame, and a midlife crisis has now prompted him to try and recreate his original formula for success.

It’s easy to get lost in the desert, a fate that befalls Joshua Erkman’s debut feature. While his protagonists eventually get dangerously close to some lurid, lethal goings-on, this self-described “neo-noir horror” leaves a vague and rudderless final impression despite its intriguing-enough buildup. “A Desert” aims for the enigmatic, supernaturally-tinged mystery of something like Lynch’s “Lost Highway,” but in the end lacks the tension and atmosphere to pull that tricky gambit off. Nonetheless, its arty sojourn through backroads-thriller terrain is likely to gain some supporters as a Tribeca Fest midnight section premiere.

It's in this realm that filmmaker Travis Stevens is most comfortable, and the one he presents in "A Wounded Fawn." Stevens' third directed feature is his gnarliest thus far, and bodes well for the kind of original horror movie that fans have clamored for since the first jump scare.

The whole bloody affair of "A Wounded Fawn" concerns jaded museum curator Meredith Tanning (Sarah Lind) who lives out this writer's personal nightmare of jumping back into the dating pool only to find herself in a serial killer's living room.

The minds behind Jakob's Wife and Werewolves Within are teaming up for A Wounded Fawn. The horror thriller revolves around a woman attempting to get back into dating after escaping a toxic relationship, only to land in the crosshairs of a mentally unhinged serial killer.

Sarah Lind and Josh Ruben lead the cast of A Wounded Fawn alongside Malin Barr, Katie Kuang, Laksmi Hedemark, and Tanya Everett. Co-written and directed by Travis Stevens, the film takes audiences through a psychedelic game of cat-and-mouse with haunting visuals reminiscent of the Giallo genre and Greek fables.

The new horror film A Wounded Fawn, out now on Shudder, starts out seeming like it is a story you've heard before. There is a serial killer named Bruce (Josh Ruben) who thinks he has found his next victim. We already saw him brutally murder a woman, Malin Barr’s Kate, in her home, then steal a piece of art that she had just won at an auction. While he is able to put on a friendly face, we can see that Bruce is more than likely to now kill again. He has managed to win over the unsuspecting Meredith (Sarah Lind) and convince her to come to a remote house in the woods for an intimate getaway. Again, this all sounds like it could be rather familiar, though it is very much not. Meredith thinks this will be her chance to get back into dating, but darker forces have already consumed Bruce.

Shudder has developed a knack for being one of the most well-curated streaming services out there. For as much as other services like Netflix or HBO Max have much more to offer in terms of quantity, to the subscriber, those offerings can feel like a ton of fluff. With Shudder, it is a more targeted, "less is more" approach. But that's not to say they don't have a little something for everyone. Case in point, within a small window of time, they can release a sweet vampire comedy like "Blood Relatives," then turn right around and release one of the weirdest movies of the year with "A Wounded Fawn," which just made its debut on the service.

After a successful run as a producer on genre documentaries such as "Jodorowsky's Dune" and memorable features like "Cheap Thrills" and "We Are Still Here," Stevens moved into the director's chair with the housebound thriller "Girl on the Third Floor" and the delightful vampire comedy "Jakob's Wife." For multiple reasons, "A Wounded Fawn" may be the most personal film Stevens has made to date, showcasing his passion for subversive art and mythology inside a classically structured story updated for modern horror audiences. Using the ancient Greek female archetypes of the Furies as a jumping-off point, "A Wounded Fawn" follows a sheltered museum curator (Lind) who finds her inner strength after doing battle with a charming art collector (Ruben) who turns out to be a serial killer.

The celebrated psychedelic horror film will be streaming on Shudder in December, after premiering at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. It also played at Fantastic Fest and FrightFest. A serial killer brings an unsuspecting victim on a weekend getaway to add another body to his ever-growing count. She's buying into his faux charms, he's eagerly lusting for blood. What could possibly go wrong? Travis Stevens' "A Wounded Fawn" is unlike anything I've seen all year, and that's always something that gets my attention. I see a lot of movies (it's the job!), so when something comes along that feels different, I take notice. While the film may remind you of others, it's told in such a unique way, with such a singular voice, that I couldn't help but be impressed. Through in some gorgeous, grainy 16mm footage, and you've got a stew going.

Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural, has announced that its newest Shudder Original Film, horror feature A Wounded Fawn, will have its world premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Festival. Shudder will release the film, which is written and directed by Travis Stevens (Girl on the Third Floor, Jakob’s Wife), in North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand in late 2022.
