There’s no question Carrie Coon broke out with HBO series “The Leftovers.” Landing that role was a big deal for the actress. “I had little on-camera work up to that point,” she told IndieWire over Zoom. “I had done some commercial work in Chicago. I had done one guest star on ‘The Playboy Club,’ with Laura Benanti. I didn’t have that much on-camera experience.”

But a Tony nomination for her performance as Honey in Steppenwolf’s 2012 production of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” opened doors to meetings with casting directors — and her husband Tracy Letts. Ellen Lewis had Coon in for an audition. “I met with Damon [Lindelof],” said Coon. “I shot the pilot, which was only one speech, and then I went off and did ‘Gone Girl,’ which I also booked off a tape in my living room. Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Tom Waits, Charlotte Rampling, Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat have joined the cast of Jim Jarmusch’s anticipated next film, “Father Mother Sister Brother.”

They’re joining Cate Blanchett and Vicky Krieps, who were previously rumored to be starring after being photographed on set. “Father Mother Sister Brother” recently wrapped production in Paris following shoots in Dublin, Ireland and in the Northeastern U.S. Post-production has begun New York, and the film is expected to be finished later this year.

“Father Mother Sister Brother” is a triptych, following three separate stories set in different countries and revolving around relationships between adult children, their somewhat distant parents and each other. The first part, “Father,” is set in the east coast in Northeastern U.S., “Mother” in Dublin, Ireland, and “Sister Brother” in Paris, France.

The Casting Society (CSA) announced its 39th Annual Artios Awards winners in film, television, theatre, commercials, short form and short form series on Thursday night, honoring Oscar Best Picture nominees “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “Past Lives” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” (which beat out “Oppenheimer”) along with Academy Award animation frontrunner “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.”

In addition to the film victors, television winners included “The Bear,” “Succession.” “Reservation Dogs,” “The Last of Us” and “Beef,” while the theatre winners spotlighted “Leopoldstadt,” “Into the Woods,” “Downstate,” “Merrily We Roll Along” and “The Inheritance.”

The awards were held in three-pronged ceremonies in Los Angeles (hosted by Niecy Nash-Betts), New York (hosted by Alex Edelman) and London (hosted by Samantha Morton). The award ceremonies hosted more than 1,500 attendees combined.

The Casting Society of America announced the winners of the 39th annual Artios Awards, which honors “excellence in casting across feature film, television, commercials and theatre.”

Winners in the film categories include Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, Past Lives and The Holdovers, while The Bear, Succession, Beef, Reservation Dogs and The Last Of Us were honored in the television categories. Queer Eye, RuPaul’s Drag Race and A Black Lady Sketch Show also received wins.

Niecy Nash-Betts hosted the Los Angeles awards ceremony at the Beverly Hilton on Thursday, while the New York ceremony was hosted by Alex Edelman at the Edison Ballroom. The London ceremony was hosted by Samantha Morton at the White City House.

Ava DuVernay was honored with the Lynn Stalmaster Award for Career Achievement, which was presented by David Oyelowo. Sharon Klein, head of casting at Disney Entertainment Television, was honored with the Hoyt Bowers Award for Excellence in Casting.

The ceremony honors top casting in the year’s films, TV and theater. The celebrations were in person for the first time in three years, taking place in Los Angeles and New York City with hosts Niecy Nash-Betts and comedian Alex Edelman dividing up emcee duties between the cities. There was also a ceremony for casting directors in London.

With the newly added Academy Award for casting, the night certainly was a celebration. Starting in 2026, there will be a prize for best achievement in casting, the culmination of a campaign for recognition that has taken decades.

The Oscars added a category for casting, and it’s about damn time.

The announcement of the new category, slated to debut in 2026 for films released in 2025, has been warmly received on social media by awards aficionados. Many consider it a long-overdue acknowledgment, especially since the Casting Directors Branch was established over a decade ago in 2013. However, this raises questions about future categories and if, when, and how they will be accommodated in an awards ceremony that aims to stay under three hours.

It’s important to note that the Academy has yet to commit to featuring the best achievement in casting award during the televised ceremony. Details regarding eligibility and voting for the inaugural award will be disclosed in April 2025, alongside the complete rules for the 98th Academy Awards. The presentation method will be determined by the Academy’s Board of Governors and its administrative leadership at a later date.

Bafta has announced the nominations for the Ee British Academy Film Awards in 2024, celebrating the very best in film of the past year. Former Ee Rising Star nominees Naomi Ackie and Kingsley Ben-Adir hosted the announcement via global livestream from the arts charity’s headquarters at 195 Piccadilly, London. The Ee Bafta Film Awards, hosted by David Tennant, will be broadcast on BBC One and iPlayer from London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 18 February. In addition, the Ee Bafta Film Awards will be available across BritBox International in USA, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway, South Africa and Australia, with more international broadcasters to be confirmed. Viewers at home will also have front row seats to the red-carpet arrivals, which will be streamed live on Bafta’s YouTube, featuring interviews with nominees and other special guests. Voting for the Ee Rising Star Award is now open at ee.co.uk/BAFTA.

This afternoon the full list of nominations for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards were announced in London, with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things leading the nominees.

Jonathan Glazer’s adaptation of Martin Amis’s The Zone of Interest received nine nominations, the same as Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Other notable films we’ll be looking out for on the night include Andrew Haigh’s brilliant and touching film All of Us Strangers, and the enthralling Anatomy of a Fall.

British films are well represented with Rye Lane, Scrapper and How to Have Sex among the nominees.

The 77th annual British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards will be held on Sunday, the 18th of February. We’ll see you there.

The Casting Society (CSA) has announced the film nominees for the 39th Artios Awards, presented by the Casting Society of America. “The Color Purple,” “Saltburn,” “Maestro,” “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Oppenheimer” are among the nominated films in big budget drama.

The awards honor casting directors’ contributions to film, television and theatre. Among the casting directors with multiple nominations are Avy Kaufman and Jessica Sherman. Also nominated are the casting directors behind “Barbie” and “The Iron Claw.”

The winners will be revealed on March 7, with celebrations being held in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, in New York City at the Edison Ballroom and in London, England.

As previously announced, Ava DuVernay is this year’s recipient of the Lynn Stalmaster Award Career Achievement.

Casting Society (CSA) today announced the the film nominees for the 39th annual Artios Awards, which honor the contribution of casting directors in film, television and theater. The CSA previously announced the nominees for its television, theater, short film and short-form series categories on Oct. 24.

Among the nominees this year are Oscar frontrunners Air, American Fiction, Barbie, The Color Purple, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, May December, Oppenheimer, Past Lives and Rustin.

Netflix and Warner Bros. both lead the nominees with five nods apiece, followed by Amazon Studios with four noms.

It’s wild that we don’t have more recognition for the art of casting. Casting directors have a guild with an Academy branch, but not their own Oscar category. While the work can often seem alchemical or opaque to outsiders, casting directors are really in the first line of storytellers who collaborate on a film; they have to see and expand on a director’s vision for the film’s world and find the actors who will embody what the filmmakers aim to create. The Alliance of Women Film Journalists (AWFJ) voted The Zone of Interest starring Sandra Hüller and Christian Friede as Best Film of 2023, with Barbie‘s Greta Gerwig collecting Best Director honors. The critics group also recognized Killers of the Flower Moon, American Fiction, The Holdovers, and The Boy and the Heron as Eda Awards winners.

Casting director Ellen Lewis and head of Indigenous casting Rene Haynes came to Killers of the Flower Moon from very different backgrounds. The former had worked with Martin Scorsese for many years, beginning with Goodfellas. The latter had been at the forefront of casting Indigenous actors in everything from the Twilight series to the HBO film Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, which earned her an Emmy nom. When Killers came around, says Lewis, “I contacted Rene immediately because I had met her on [the Netflix series] Godless and knew that I was going to want her with me on this journey.”

Haynes was first hired to cast extras for War Party (1988). Production brought her to the Seven Reservations of Montana, where she says she “developed this strong attachment to [the Indigenous] community.” Soon thereafter was Dances With Wolves (1990), which she says “heralded a realization that Native characters should be played by Native actors.

If it seems like Lily Gladstone is winning Best Actress prizes for her acclaimed performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon” multiple times per week, that’s because it’s true. Since the New York Film Critics Circle announced Gladstone as the group’s Best Actress prizewinner on November 30, the 37-year-old star has been awarded Best Actress by the National Board of Review, Boston Society of Film Critics, and Chicago Film Critics Association, and earned Best Actress nominations from the Golden Globe Awards and Critics’ Choice Awards.

The haunting “Killers of the Flower Moon” scene where Lily Gladstone’s Mollie Burkhart sits at the bottom of a staircase and lets out a devastating scream after learning that her sister was killed in an explosion is one of the film’s most affecting moments. According to cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, it was unscripted.

Prieto, a longtime collaborator of director Martin Scorsese, believes the last-minute change came together because the filmmaker “trusts his actors, and they’re a part of the process.”

Based on the nonfiction book by David Grann, “Killers of the Flower Moon” stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Ernest Burkhart, a war veteran who comes to Oklahoma in the 1920s to work for his wealthy uncle, William King Hale, played by Robert De Niro. Hale encourages Ernest to marry Mollie, as her Osage family owns oil rights and could make them rich.

There’s a story Lily Gladstone likes to tell about a Blackfeet man and a flower.

“He pulled it from the ground and shook the dirt off. He exposed the root system,” she says. “And he said, ‘This is like a story. If this flower is a story, then all of these roots are the different versions. They twist around each other; they go off in opposite directions. But that’s what gives it its strength. That’s what makes it hard to uproot. That’s what keeps the story going.”

The man was speaking to 20th-century historian James Willard Schultz, who was struggling to make sense of the varying ways Blackfeet people had told him the same stories. In an oral tradition, Gladstone emphasizes, there’s no one way of seeing things; each person’s narrative is the truth.

Hunter‘s 2012 stage play, “The Whale” starred Fraser as Charlie, a 600-pound English teacher who isolates himself from the world but is given a chance at redemption as he attempts to restore his relationship with his estranged daughter, Ellie (Sadie Sink). This, no doubt, was the thought in the mind of casting director Ellen Lewis before she settled on actor Mykelti Williamson ("Heat") for the role of Benjamin Buford "Bubba" Blue in "Forrest Gump." It's also the cry Gump, played by Tom Hanks, makes as he goes running back into the jungle to save his friend Bubba during the Vietnam War. Yet before Williamson landed the part and donned Bubba's lip attachment, controversial comedian Dave Chappelle — then a relative unknown — was in consideration for the part.

According to Comedy Hype, Williamson suggested they dumb down the character of Bubba, who was smarter in the Winston Groom novel on which "Forrest Gump" was based. The idea was to put Bubba and Forrest on more of a peer level, Iq-wise, so they could relate better. However, Bubba ultimately fares worse than Forrest...

Netflix leads with 11 noms, nearly double the haul for runners-up HBO and Hulu, which grabbed six apiece. Disney+ is next with four, followed Amazon Prime Video and Nickelodeon, which scooped three apiece. Hosted by Yvette Nicole Brown, it was the first virtual ceremony effort from the organization, as Hollywood continues to make adjustments in light of the ongoing pandemic.

“Borat” won in the big-budget comedy category, while “Chicago 7” won for big-budget drama.
