Known for co-directing “The Big Heat” (1988) with Johnnie To, unsung Hong Kong filmmaker Andrew Kam Yeung Wa also worked as the 2nd Unit director for “Peking Opera Blues” (1986) and “A Better Tomorrow III” (1989). But with “Fatal Termination”, a simple revenge-driven action thriller, he manages to bring it to an intensely merciless level during the film’s last half hour climax.

The Victims’ Game season 2 introduces new characters while bringing back old ones and helping us reconnect with them all. The old characters go through significant changes from the first season, while the new characters have motives that are intense enough to make your skin crawl and evoke strong emotions. Let’s get familiar with all of these characters through this cast and character guide for this new season of The Victims’ Game.
Spoilers Ahead
Fang Yi-Jen
Watching Joseph Chang as Fang Yi-Jen in The Victims’ Game season 2 has been fascinating. In the first season, we see Fang as primarily a forensic specialist who was deeply dedicated to solving crimes. His Asperger’s syndrome made him brilliant yet socially awkward, and his strained relationship with his daughter, Chiang Hsiao-Meng, was a central struggle. In Season 2, Fang’s transformation felt really significant. He’s no longer just a forensic expert but also...

The golden era of VHS was ideally suited to the Girls with Guns subgenre as video sleeves of attractive women armed to the teeth would invariably be enticing to the target audience. In addition, a large number would mix martial arts with the then current trend for the bullet ballets that was “Heroic Bloodshed”. Female assassins would frequent the plots riffing off “La Femme Nikita” and “The Killer” which leads us to “Dreaming the Reality”, which was recently released as a Blu ray media book in Germany after being absent from home release for some time. Does it escape from the pile of cheap exploitation flicks or return to obscurity? Only one way to find out.

Global streaming giant Netflix has made a significant ongoing commitment to production of original content from Southeast Asia and in the Chinese language.
For 2024, Netflix has unveiled a slate of four Chinese-language series, all hailing from Taiwan. From Thailand, it detailed seven series and one film. From Indonesia, it has committed to five films and a series co-written and directed by the consistently successful Joko Anwar, marking his first partnership with the streamer.
Additionally, Netflix has confirmed the appointment of Maya Huang as its head of Chinese-language content.
The moves stand in sharp contrast to the mid-January happenings at rival global streamer Prime Video, which is cutting staff in the region and ending its brief experiment with Southeast Asian originals.
In Indonesia, Netflix says it is broadening its storytelling with a range of genres including comedy, action, fantasy, and sci-fi thrillers.

Though I’m sure there are only approximately 2 people reading this who haven’t seen the original Mr Vampire, we have to set some context before we delve into Eureka’s two disc set of its sequels.
1985’s Mr Vampire (also on Blu-ray from Eureka) stars Lam Ching-Ying as a Taoist priest who, along with his students (Ricky Hui and Chin Siu-ho) has to fight off supernatural threats like a ghost that wants to seduce one of the students and the undead grandfather of Ting-Ting (Moon Lee), who they were supposed to rebury, but allowed to turn and escape. It’s great fun, narratively nonsense a lot of the time, but also somewhat rooted in real traditions and Chinese culture (the unique hopping vampires). For my money it earns its reputation as a classic, which brings us to this set.

Everything Everywhere All at Once. Courtesy of A24.In an interview with Donna Chu of the Hong Kong Film Archive in 1999, Michelle Yeoh said, “Nowadays, when people hear that Michelle Yeoh is in a film, they will immediately think it is an action film. I hope in the future it will be different, and I can present a variety of faces of myself to the audience. But right now I'm very proud of myself for what I've done, creating a niche for myself in action films, because I've worked very hard to achieve this. I really treasure this status and do not take it lightly. But as an actor, you just want to try to act in different styles, and pursue being in different genres of films.”1The twenty plus years since then have seen Yeoh accomplish exactly that, as she is now internationally famous not just as a star of action films,...

Action cinema back in the golden era of Hong Kong cinema was encapsulated with an anything goes ethos. You would get almost guerilla style film-making techniques with a complete aversion to safety and what you subsequently got on screen was the result. “Devil Hunters” concludes with one such stunt that will leave the mind boggling at how nobody got sued! It’s also a classic example of B-movie filmmaking with it fitting comfortably into the female fighting flicks that followed the success of Michelle Yeoh and “Yes Madam”. With a lot of these poorly put togethe,r will this stand out from the crowd or just be remembered for the finale?

Before “Shaolin Soccer”, there was “The Champions”. Guest reviewer Lee Broughton returns with an assessment of Ricky Lau’s Hong Kong comedy horror show-cum-mystical martial arts romp. Introduced to the vampire mythos are some novel ideas, like scary-looking vampires that get around by hopping on two legs. Effective horror scenarios include expertly choreographed martial arts routines. However, the score on the genre mash-up front is “two out of three ain’t bad:” the brand of broad comedy that Mr. Vampire peddles is hit and miss when it comes to generating genuine laughs.

Guest reviewer Lee Broughton returns with a Region B review of Tsui Hark’s mystical tale of derring-do in ancient China. Hark revived a once popular variant of the wuxia film form — the Chinese shenguai wuxia films from the late 1920s — which paired chivalric martial arts with more overtly mystical and mythological elements. The groundbreaking and stylishly executed result is said to have been John Carpenter’s chief inspiration when making Big Trouble in Little China.

Eureka Entertainment has announced their July 2020 line up today: a trio of classic 1930s horror films starring the iconic Bela Lugosi; and a new 2K restoration of an influential and genre bending horror-comedy. The latter, Ricky Lau’s 1985 chit “Mr. Vampire,” is one of the most genre-defining horror-comedies imaginable. Since its original release, this sensational Hong Kong blockbuster hit spawned at least four sequels and countless spin-offs and imitations of jiang-shi (“hopping vampire”) movies. Limited edition O-Card and Booklet details for “Mr. Vampire” are available below.
Synopsis
One of the most genre-defining (not to mention genre-defying!) horror-comedies imaginable, and one of the key Hong Kong blockbuster hits of the 1980s, the popularity and influence of Mr. Vampirecannot be overstated. Spawning at least four sequels and countless spin-offs and imitations, this Hong Kong horror-comedy to end them all was an understandable crowd-pleasing sensation, and triggered a wave of jiangshi (“hopping vampire”) movies.

“Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain” is the first Hong Kong production to combine traditional Hk actions stunts with Western special effects. At the 3rd Hong Kong Film Awards ceremony, the film received five nominations.
Zu is a collective name of a mountain chain located somewhere in present-day Sichuan. Being a place of great military importance in ancient China, it was always a battleground between various warring factions. Nevertheless, it was also a place of great mystique due to numerous exotic peaks and old temples. An army deserter Dik Ming-kei (Yuen Biao) is accidentally attacked by vampires in a cave, but he is rescued by Master Ding Yan (Adam Cheng). Dik Ming-kei does not realise that he entered the underworld where good is in an eternal struggle against evil (controlled by the Blood Demon). Chung Mei (Sammo Hung) can hold the Blood Demon in captivity only for 49 days until the stars shift.

During the heyday of the 1980s, Golden Harvest Studios sought to tackle the void left in the scene with the lowered priority kung-fu flicks, from The Shaw Brothers. They quickly established themselves as major players with a series of female-driven films that made stars of a crop of explosive talent, ranging from Yukari Oshima to Cynthia Khan, Moon Lee and the stars of the film that kickstarted the genre, Cynthia Rothrock and Michelle Yeoh.

Our latest delve into martial arts cinema looks at the movie that inspired a John Carpenter favourite...
I've had a few comments here on my martial arts features asking "Where's the best place to start with martial arts films?" and I always find myself struggling to answer. The genre's so broad that it's hard to know what to recommend - different people will respond to different films, of course - and yet all this time, the perfect answer for Den Of Geek readers has been staring me in the face. If you've grown up on the geek diet of comic books, Star Wars, Lord Of The Rings, and the Diy SFX of Doctor Who, then the ideal martial arts starter movie for you is Zu: Warriors From The Magic Mountain (1983).
Zu was a significant film for the Hong Kong 'New Wave' movement that revolutionised the industry in the late 70s.

(1981-1989 – The Three Dragons)
After the early 1980’s, Golden Harvest started to branch out into the modern-day world leaving behind the Kung Fu cinema age and progressing into something massive. From 1981 onwards, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao (The Three Dragons) were about to embark on a sensational journey, progressing from there Kung Fu genre into modern-day Martial Arts and stunt work, something Shaw Brothers were left behind and Golden Harvest was to be the new global company.
Jackie Chan back then headed to the United states to try to break into the international market, but the movies he appeared in didn’t really take off and Jackie was also disappointed with the filming of The Big Brawl. Jackie felt he never had chance to show off his action choreography and wasn’t given the space to add his world of experience to the movie. Although it was Directed...

Tiger Cop is a fine example of the classic 1980’s Chinese Martial Art genre. If you are fans of Yukari Oshima, Moon Lee and Cynthia Rothrock then this right up your street. Tiger Cop is two sets of extravagant trailers which pays homage to them movies and stars which brought us hard-hitting fight scenes over the years.
Maria Tran plays the new inspector on the force and right away she gets into trouble when introduced to her new partner. It’s a very well choreographed fight scene showcasing Maria’s hand to hand combat, the art of blocking and some very nice kicks. Maria really mixes it up, when watching the fights it takes me back to watching movies such as Angels, Outlaw brothers, Yes Madam and more.

Moon lee is simply one of the greatest female fighters in Martial Arts film history. Her high tempo fight scenes and hard hitting action ranks her among the greats, along with Angela Mao, Cynthia Rothrock and Yukari Oshima.
Some of her early movies roles which spring to mind are as follows – Zu: Warriors From The Magic Mountain, The Champions, Those Merry Souls and The Protector. After that we got to see her in the first two classic Mr.Vampire movies, but it wasn’t until the movie Angel that we finally seen what she could do. “Girls with Guns” genre was born, Moon teamed up with Yukari Oshima and delivered big time that females could fight as well and tough as men do and wow, she was not wrong.
Moon Lee stepped away from making movies around 1995, but as always continued doing her main passion which is dancing, something she...

A few months ago i posted a fight clip from Maria Tran and her incredible hard working team which was titled Tiger Cop 2. The short fight scene reminded me off the days when Moon Lee and Yukari Oshima were in fine fighting form with hard hitting action, so i had to do a feature on there next project Tiger Cop 3.
Time traveling back to the Hong Kong 80s/90s old school era, Tiger Cop III will be another embarkment action homage to the days of Moon Lee, Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock.
The 30 second clip Tiger Cop II was shot over 2 hours in late July as a fun tribute and as a response to Yellow Zone, an 80s Hong Kong style fan action short by the German boys; Andy Long, Can Ayin and Khoi Chau, has now sparked another clip.

Lam Ching Ying is my favorite star in any Horror movie, weather it be taking on hopping vampires or just plain old spirits, no one does it better than lam.
His roles in the Mr.Vampire movies show his skills as an actor, with great comic timing which goes well with his serious acting side, which we dont normally get to see on screen. This role would make him, not just a big star in Asia but also worldwide as the master of Vampire killers.
I hope you enjoy my top 10 list and please feel free to write your own favorites in the comments box at the bottom of the page.

I thought it was about time i did a post on the great vampire buster of all time, yes you got it, lam Ching Ying. This will be listing all the movies and tv series where Lam Ching Ying either stars in or takes on the hopping vampires and evil spirits.
His roles in the Mr.Vampire movies show his skills as an actor, with great comic timing which goes well with his serious acting side, which we normally get to see on screen. This role would make him, not just a big star in Asia but also worldwide as the master of Vampire killers.
Other great movies which he starred in (But not in a vampire movie) were the likes of The Prodigal Son, School On Fire, Eastern Condors, The Magnificent Butcher and Painted Faces.
I have been a big fan of these movies since i first watched Mr.

- If I'm counting right, a total of 23 titles have been added to the Contemporary World CInema section and I can vouch for a trio of Cannes titles that I have seen in the awesomely disturbing Yorgos Lanthimos' Dogtooth, Mia Hansen-Løve's delicate Le Père de mes Enfants and Cristian Mungiu and co.'s humor-filled look at communism in native Romania in Tales from the Golden Age. Almost all of these titles have recently appeared on the film festival circuit after Cannes. Here is the full list below. Contemporary World Cinema 25 Carat Patxi Amezcua, Spain North American Premiere From director Patxi Amezcua comes a fresh action film that delves into the world of thieves, go-getters, swindlers, thugs, mafia members and corrupt police officers in Barcelona. Adrift Bui Thac Chuyen, Vietnam North American Premiere This is a sensual drama about a newlywed couple, exploring sexual awakening, forbidden lesbian desire and marital infidelity within modern Vietnam.
