The Gundam franchise has become one of the most important mecha series in all anime history thanks to its combination of hard-hitting series that deliver tales of war, love, and utter loss. That is because, at its very core, Gundam is not just about giant robots; it is about the people piloting them.
One of the franchise’s most notable traits is its willingness to not just show but actually embrace tragedy and shine a spotlight on the grim realities of war. From untimely sacrifices to gut-wrenching misunderstandings, Gundam is filled with tragic deaths that have left a lasting mark on its characters–and its fans.

The esteemed creator of the Gundam anime franchise, Yoshiyuki Tomino, has addressed why Amuro Ray became such an integral character. The veteran director revealed that the main protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam was inspired by the depressing historical reality of Japanese child soldier recruitment during the Pacific War.
Via Mantan Web, Tomino discussed the inspiration for Amuro's creation on Nippon Broadcasting System's radio program 'Proposal for Next Stage II.' "At the end of the Pacific War, I was well aware of the existence of child soldiers," he stated. "I also knew that when you turned 16, you could go to a training school to train tankers, and in the case of the Navy, at the end of the war, there were child soldiers on board the battleship Yamato." This inspired the creator to bring attention to the subject in his anime work. "There is a question about why I...

“That lady is wearing a wig!” is the first thought that comes to me at the start of Parallel… Shortly thereafter, the film throws up an interesting conceit and, aside from the wig, this film is extremely professionally made. It is a sci-fi mind bender with similar ambition to Looper.
A group of friends have created a parking app, and they are trying to seal the big deal, but it all goes wrong, and they lose out. The banter among the gang is believable and funny. The characters are likable and believable as people. There is a bouncy, fun, Ocean’s 11 vibe to a lot of the gang’s hijinks.

"Justice before redemption." Cranked Up Films has released an official US trailer for an indie action movie titled American Badger, made by a Canadian stuntman named Kirk Caouette - who stars, writes & directs this film. This recently premiered at the Glasgow Film Festival a few months ago. A seemingly cold-blooded hitman is assigned to befriend a call girl, but all hell breaks loose when he is forced to kill her. Kirk says, "I was very inspired by the early works of legendary Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai; the way he blended slow burning film noir with explosive action pieces. With this in mind, I set out to create a film that would delve into that space but would also satisfy the appetite of a modern audience that has been gobbling up comic book movies & John Wick films." With Kirk Caouette, Andrea Stefancikova, Michael Kopsa, Milan Stefancik, and Zak Santiago.

There will be six online presentations, including the UK premiere of Kyle Rankin’s controversial high school siege drama Run Hide Fight, starring Isabel May as a fiercely independent student taking on a quartet of invading shooters, and the UK premiere of Out Of This World (Hors Du Monde), a disturbing, compelling study of obsession from brilliant new French director Marc Fouchard. It boasts a stunning performance by Kevin Mischel as a mentally-challenged musician turned Uber driver. A few years back Here Comes Hell, a Black & White mystery thriller, was a FrightFest Glasgow sensation, and The Woman With Leopard Shoes (LA Femme Aux Chaussures Leopard) is another...

Tonight, January 18 at 8 p.m. Est on Fox, "Fringe" will reach its epic, sure-to-be heartbreaking finale. It's a two-hour, 100th episode culmination of an adventure that has spanned decades, shattered timelines and crossed universes in the space of five years, while still maintaining the unbreakable familial bond at its core.
While it may be painful to bid farewell to Peter (Joshua Jackson), Olivia (Anna Torv), Walter (John Noble), Astrid (Jasika Nicole), Broyles (Lance Reddick) and anyone else who might happen to reappear for the show's denouement, the finale stands as a testament to the passion of fans who have kept this smart, courageous series on the air for five seasons, and to Fox, for allowing the perennial bubble show to bow out gracefully instead of being snuffed out without a goodbye.

One doomsday averted, another one still to come… if you’re a Fringe fan. The series finale of the Fox sci-fi saga is less than a month away, and this time we’re pretty sure the calendar can be trusted. Tonight’s new episode of Fringe is the show’s last outing until Jan. 11, when the two-part, three-hour series swan song begins. If you’re in the market for a tease, we direct you to this image from our recent “Fringe Finale” gallery of photos and intel provided by showrunner J.H. Wyman. (Don’t worry: It’s not a spoiler.

Fringe, Season 5, Episode 1: “Transilience Thought Unifier Model-11”
Written by J. H. Wyman
Directed by Jeannot Szwarc and Miguel Sapochnik
Airs Fridays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
This week, on Fringe: Etta has shady connections, Walter has a screw loose, and Markham has a pretty sweet coffee table
After ending last season’s finale with a veritable explosion of happy, “Transilience Thought Unifier Model-11” starts Fringe’s final season off on a rather different note. The gloominess that has so often pervaded the series, right back to the pilot, is back in a big way and it’s no longer centered on the characters. The dystopic future first glimpsed in last season’s “Letters of Transit” is now the permanent setting, one of gray skies (pumped full of carbon monoxide, to better suit the Observers) and paved parks. This premiere presumably sets the template for where the season is...

If you find yourself in the year 2036, living in a society ruled by chrome-domed, fedora-favoring overlords, and you want to take a drive to see your Aunt Ethel in the next town over, you’d be well-advised to first heed this latest edict from Fringe‘s Captain Windmark, your not-so-friendly Observer mouthpiece.

Repeaters Poster ArtWhat would you do if you woke up on the same day everyday? What would you do if everyday repeated? These are the types of questions asked of characters Kyle (Dustin Milligan, Sonia (Amanda Crew) and Weeks (Richard de Klerk) in the film Repeaters. These three are recovering drug addicts and they must make amends with family members who they have hurt through their drug use. This film is similar to Harold Ramis' Groundhog Day where life repeats until characters learn a lesson and readers can see Repeaters at the Toronto International Film Festival beginning September 13th. Have a read of the interesting premise below and take a peek at the film's trailer.
The synopsis for Repeaters here:
"On a random Wednesday, the residents of a rehab centre in Mission, B.C. are granted a rare one-day-pass to venture back into the world and make amends with those they have wronged.

The Marvel universe has been an important universe to the film world, as shown by the box office receipts to Marvel Studios' live-action summer blockbusters like Iron Man and many others. The studio is also making a dent in the animation field as well, with its successful brand of straight-to-dvd Marvel Animated Features and the latest to hit (or smash) onto the shelves is Planet Hulk, which will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on February 2.
To celebrate this latest release, a red-carpet premiere event was held at the Paley Center for Media, simultaneously at both Paley venues in Los Angeles and New York. I was able to hit the red carpet for this event to talk to some of the key players behind this release, and the first one down the line was supervising producer Joshua Fine, who started out by telling us how this project got off the ground.
