It’s shame that it’s one of the VFX studio’s last hurrahs, after working on the Oscar-winning “The Jungle Book” (2016), the Oscar-nominated “The Lion King” (2019), and the “Mufasa” (2024) prequel.

However, Mpc doesn’t stand alone. They followed Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” (2010), the first of the Disney live action remakes, which benefited from the tech achievements of Sony Pictures Imageworks, while Weta Digital created something iconic with the friendly dragon from David Lowery’s “Pete’s Dragon” (2016).

Disney’s live-action Snow White hits theaters March 21 with Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, but it’s not the first movie in recent years to mine the classic fairy tale. In 2012, director Tarsem Singh’s Mirror Mirror starred Lily Collins as Snow White and Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen in an updated version of the Brothers Grimm tale, previously told in the 1937 animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The 2012 film debuted amid a wave of fairy tale reboots, following 2011’s Amanda Seyfried-led Red Riding Hood and coming two months before Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, which starred Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth.

Singh remembers pressure for his project to beat Universal’s movie to the punch. “We don’t have nearly their budget and their machine, so we have to come before them,” the director tells The Hollywood Reporter of his mindset.

To say that Disney's latest live-action remake was long-awaited would be an insult, but Snow White has at last come to theatres everywhere. While social media platforms around the interweb are on fire with the amount of vitriol for this film, is it really 100% bad?

Behind-the-scenes drama aside, the film itself will still resonate well with families with children, but not the Disney purist. Be that as it may, even this die-hard Disnerd will admit that the film at least has one advantage over its predecessor.

Directed by Marc Webb, the live-action adaptation of the 1937 Disney animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs sees a princess, Snow White (Rachel Zegler), join forces with seven dwarfs to liberate her kingdom from her cruel stepmother, the Evil Queen (Gal Gadot).

For years, the film has been under fire for a combination of controversies, including Zegler’s casting and her opinionated remarks about the original animated film. The star also drew heat for her hostile reaction to Donald Trump’s re-election (she later apologized) and her pro-Palestine stance. Of all the Disney animated classics to have been given the live-action treatment, few are more beloved than 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, a landmark feature that opened the door to a whole vault of canonical fairy tales ideally suited to the form. That, in turn, led to original stories, building the studio a vast, field-leading toon library and a legacy beloved the world over. If Snow White arrives accompanied by an echo chamber of overblown online controversies, that has zero bearing on the pleasures of this 21st century update. Though we are used to seeing a lot of gushing first reactions for pretty much every movie, Disney's latest live-action remake has come in for backlash from all corners for a number of reasons. The trailers didn't exactly do much to build anticipation, either, even among those who would usually look forward to Disney fare.

Disney held a scaled back premiere for the movie with no press invited to interview the stars on the red carped, and many believe the reason comes down to supposed "controversies" surrounding lead stars Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot.

Here's what actor Martin Klebba - who provides the voice of Grumpy - had to say about the premiere during an interview with THR.

Press were not invited to interview the stars on the red carpet in favor of "a more celebratory, family-friendly afternoon event to match the tone and target audience for the film."

The real reason is believed to be at least partially due to "controversies" surrounding leads Rachel Zegler, who has been an outspoken supporter of Palestine and critic of President Donald Trump, and Gal Gadot, who has come to the defence of her home country of Israel. There have also been reports that both actresses didn't really get along while shooting the movie (although this has been disputed).

Just as "no one man should have all that power," no one movie should have $320 million at its disposal, especially if it's not even going to be in theaters. There are countless films that cost $319 million less to make than this, and people should be advised to see them instead. Then again, there's kind of a twisted, disturbing thrill in watching money burn.

I sincerely wanted The Electric State to be better than the rumors suggested. I went in with an open mind, and even my absence of expectations were let down. Hollywood needs an intervention. It requires less money. Like those big banks we all love, it needs breaking.

The trailer features quite a bit of new footage of Rachel Zegler's titular Princess arriving to the Enchanted Forest, where she encounters her seven diminutive companions for the first time.

The teaser, meanwhile, shows the Queen erupting in anger upon learning that her stepdaughter still lives and is "fairest of them all." We also get to see the villain's "old crone" form, as she tricks Snow White into accepting the gift of a poisoned apple.

It remains to be seen if Zegler and Gadot can win over their doubters by doing justice to the classic animated characters, but they do certainly look the part on this latest one-sheet.

Walt Disney Pictures’ Snow White is counting days for its theatrical release, which still has a few weeks left. It has been in the spotlight since the film’s casting took place with Rachel Zegler in the titular role and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. The latest report shared the projected range of collection for the film on its opening weekend, similar to Angelina Jolie starrer Maleficent. Keep scrolling for the deets.

The musical fantasy film was directed by Marc Webb and was based on a screenplay by Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson. It is the live-action reimagining of Walt Disney Productions’ 1937 animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on the fairytale by the Brothers Grimm. In addition to Rachel and Gal, the movie will also feature Andrew Burnap, Ansu Kabia, and Martin Klebba in crucial roles.

According to Deadline, the movie is looking at a 3-day start of $63 million - $70 million, while other sources believe $65M at this point in time is more accurate.

While this wouldn't usually be seen as a disastrous opening (especially if overseas numbers are stronger), for this particular movie, it simply might not be good enough.

A recent Forbes article revealed that Snow White's budget had ballooned to a whopping $269.4 million by the end of 2023 (current reports put it at $250M), which puts a lot of pressure on the movie to become a massive box office success.

This is just an early estimate, but if those numbers don't go up as we draw closer to the film's March release, Disney could have a major flop on its hands.
