Track by Track is a recurring feature series in which artists guide readers through every song on their latest release. Today, Margaret Glaspy takes us through her latest record, Echo the Diamond.
Today, songwriter Margaret Glaspy returns with her third full-length record, Echo the Diamond. Expanding upon the the sound and themes of her previous effort, Devotion, Echo the Diamond finds Glaspy trusting her instincts and imbuing the batch of songs with a newfound rawness and grit.
With many of the tracks incorporating the musicians’ first takes, Glaspy’s songwriting has never felt so immediate or urgent. Over blues-injected, contemplative tunes, she attempts put indescribable emotions into words — and, as she’ll admit, sometimes even she doesn’t fully understand all of the complex nuances explored in her work.
“[It] holds some mysterious qualities that I don’t quite understand yet,” she tells Consequence of the song “I Didn’t Think So.

The gangster movie is a beast very like the gangs it is based on. Depending on the country of origin the crime organisations tend to have certain looks and style and a certain tradition that they cling to as their laws of how to do business. The modern gangster movies are definitely an example of this, but they also share one thing in common, they lend a lot from The Long Good Friday which gets the Arrow Video treatment with its new release on Blu-ray.

Forgotten Classics is a recurring feature, a look back and reflection on great motion pictures that often slip under the radar and become under-appreciated, ignored relics of a previous era or simply damned by lack of face time in the spotlight.
The Long Good Friday
Directed by John Mackenzie
Screenplay by Barrie Keeffe
UK, 1980
The urge to remain topical while discussing the past can quite easily be met when it comes to film, such is the sliding wall of time, faces and names that retains connection. But sometimes such links aren’t of the happy variety, such as the case here. Bob Hoskins, renowned actor of burly, diminutive disposition and with occasionally overlooked raw talent and expressive style as a thespian, last month retired from the acting business after it emerged he is suffering from Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative disorder made famous by Michael J Fox’s diagnosis in the 1990’s.

Go To Blazes
Stars: Dave King, Robert Morley, Daniel Massey, Maggie Smith | Written by Patrick Campbell, Vivienne Knight | Directed by Michael Truman
First released in 1962, Go to Blazes is a frothy British comedy in the classic mould. The film follows the escapades of a trio of hapless criminals. After their getaway from a jewellery shop robbery is foiled by a traffic jam caused by a fire engine, the gang decide to procure a fire engine of their own as the perfect getaway vehicle. With zany results!
For some reason it feels more difficult to criticise old movies than it does modern ones. I think there’s an innate instinct to revere that which has gone before, at least in terms of cinema. Of course, the language and culture of cinema today is vastly different from the early sixties, which makes it tricky, for me at least, to offer a fair critique.

Receiving its first ever DVD release this week, classic comedy Go To Blazes is unfortunately not as wonderful as many other British farces. So before you rush to the shops – or indeed the cinema, where the film is also being re-released in a limited capacity – check out our review first!
Bernard, Harry and Alfie are three charming but foolhardy crooks that smash and grab tactics rarely come off. On their way for another stint behind bars they see the traffic part for an on call fire engine and hatch a new plan. Upon their release they set out to acquire a fire engine to use as the perfect getaway vehicle on a jewellery robbery. But when they are mistaken for real firemen their plan slowly begins to unravel. When Harry gets scared by the appearance of the police, he accidentally runs into a dress salons changing room.
