Friends arrived in the 1990s to change the sitcom genre and has an incomparable legacy, but it was almost sued due to how similar it is to a 1992 rom-com with 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. The 1990s is home to some of the most memorable and successful sitcoms, all of them offering something unique and fun. Friends premiered on NBC in 1994 and became one of the most successful TV shows ever, running for a total of 10 seasons and ending in 2004. Friends broke various records and continues to be regarded as one of the greatest TV shows ever made.
The concept of Friends is simple, but was very effective as it deeply connected with the audience: six friends with different personalities, goals, and backgrounds navigate adulthood together. Throughout 10 seasons, Monica (Courteney Cox), Chandler (Matthew Perry), Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow), Joey (Matt LeBlanc), Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), and Ross (David Schwimmer) won the audience over with...

Glassman's final storyline on The Good Doctor hits hard due to his daughter's tragic story mirroring his patient's. The emotional impact of Glassman's character is heightened by his real-life daughter playing a key role in the show. Schiff and Kelley's powerful performances add an extra layer of intensity and emotion to The Good Doctor's final episodes.
Glassman's final story on The Good Doctor packs even more of an emotional punch because of a behind-the-scenes fact. Dr, Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff) has been Shaun's mentor and surrogate father since The Good Doctor began. Throughout the series' seven-season run, Glassman has had many emotional stories, including his battle with brain cancer during season 1 and a rift between him and Shaun during season 6 after Shaun's interference demonstrated that Glassman was no longer capable of performing surgery. The Good Doctor is ending after season 7 but has given Glassman one final story.

In the 1995 movie "Waterworld," Kevin Costner was the draw in more ways than one. To much of the audience, he was still the glamorous movie star who had managed to pull off a blockbuster "Robin Hood" movie despite his inability to successfully nail an English accent. To others, he seemed like he might be a potential trainwreck on the verge of derailment. "Waterworld" had fallen victim to many behind-the-scenes tales of sinking sets, director fights, and Costner rewriting the script to make himself look better. Ultimately, for one reason or another, enough people were curious about the film that it turned a profit. However difficult he may have been behind the scenes, the star turned out to still have it.
Within the movie, however, the person everyone wants to see is Enola, a nine year-old girl whose back tattoo features an encoded map to the last bit of dry land on a post-climate change world.

Favorite director Bill Forsyth lends his knack for droll understatement to a screenplay by John Sayles, a crime tale that opts for keen character study and doesn’t stretch credibility. Burt Reynolds has a gem of a role as a career burglar doing his bit for the next generation, showing a ‘new guy’ the ins and outs of thievery; Casey Siemaszko is his thick-headed but resolutely faithful assistant on several outrageous heists. The criminal life almost doesn’t seem too terrible — except for the going-to-prison part. The disc commentary with Forsyth and Sayles is a great listen.

Welcome back to a new Let’s Scare Bryan to Death! This month we’re talking to Lindsay Traves, a horror/Batman/lotsa stuff expert who has bylines all over town, including Comics Gaming Magazine, Bloody Disgusting, Grim Journal, and of course right here at Daily Dead. She’s also stepped into co-hosting duties for The Pod and the Pendulum, a “weekly podcast covering every horror movie franchise, one movie and one episode at a time.”
For this month’s movie, Traves finally got me to dive into a film with a rabid following and a Gif that serves as Thirst Twitter’s answer to “do you read Sutter Cane?” I’m talking, of course, about Adam Wingard’s 2014 action/slasher hybrid, The Guest. In “Strip Down, Rise Up,” an attendee of S Factor’s beginning pole dance course admits to her fellow students that the class is nothing like what she thought it would be. “When I showed up, I wasn’t scared,” the woman tells those gathered in a circle. “Now I’m a little scared.” In her welcoming remarks, S Factor founder Sheila Kelley promised that might happen. Whether Amber, the pert, fit newbie, will stick with the L.A. studio’s six-month course remains to be seen.
She’s right, though. The class at the heart of “Strip Down, Rise Up,” upends expectations. So does director-producer Michèle Ohayon’s cinema verité movie. Debuting on Netflix, the doc is poignant, surprising and deftly reawakens questions about “patriarchy” — not by being a pole-dancing polemic but by foregrounding its characters’ experiences.
The strip club and its pole have become a de rigueur gesture in U.

‘The Good Doctor’ Star Richard Schiff Reveals Positive Covid-19 Test; Series Production Not Impacted

Richard Schiff, star of ABC’s The Good Doctor, and his wife, actress Sheila Kelley, who is recurring on the ABC medical drama, have tested positive for Covid-19, the two revealed on social media Tuesday.
Schiff said that his positive result came a week ago, on November 3.
“We‘re quarantined in our home in Vancouver, recovering,” Kelley wrote.
According to sources, production on The Good Doctor in Vancouver has continued while Schiff and Kelley are self-isolating, with the filming schedule reworked to accommodate their temporary absence.
The duo are believed to have contracted the virus outside of work; an on-set Covid transmission automatically triggers a production shutdown.
Both Schiff and Kelley spoke of the toll fighting Covid-19 is taking on them.
“This virus is a slippery sucker,” Kelley wrote. “One minute you feel almost fine and the next you can’t catch your breath. Symptoms change radically daily even hourly.

Spanning a number of months, the episodes pick up early in 2020, when little was known about Covid-19, watching as the virus comes to meet San Jose with deadly force. “This episode of The Good Doctor is a made-up story about a real battle still being fought,” the opening title cards read. “Honor the heroes … many of whom have given their lives. Do your part. Wear a mask.”

The Good Doctor Season 4 has yet to begin, but we're already worried about our favorite characters.
ABC has dropped the first plot details for The Good Doctor Season 4, and it sounds like an emotional season for all of the characters.
The season premiere is a two-parter according to the network, and it finds the characters facing the global pandemic called Covid-19.
"Dr. Shaun Murphy treats a patient with an illness that is not only unpredictable in nature, but also unlike anything he or the team at San Jose St. Bonaventure has ever seen before, reads the logline for the November 2 premiere.
"As safety protocols and quarantines increase due to the global pandemic, Lea and Shaun’s new relationship will become tested," the synopsis continues.
If you watch The Good Doctor online, you know Will Yun Lee's Alex Park was gearing up to exit the hospital on The Good Doctor Season 3.

Hey, "The Good Doctor" fans. We have some very unfortunate news for you guys tonight. For some unknown reason, ABC has apparently decided not to air the new episode 6 of your favorite show tonight, October 28, 2019. What's important, now, is that we tell you when the new episode 6 will air. We're happy to tell you that it will be delayed for just one week. It's a The Good Doctor wedding and E! News has your exclusive first look. In the sneak peek photos below Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff) takes a walk down the aisle with Debbie Wexler (Sheila Kelley) and Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) is right there with him. To make this blessed event even better? Kelley and Schiff are married in real life. "This year I get to work a lot more with my real-life wife, Shelia Kelley, and I'm loving that," Schiff told E! News about the new season. The two previously worked together on Santa Fe, but weren't in the same scene, and in an AFI film years ago. "I love it," Schiff said about working with Kelley. “The most enjoyable moment was when I proposed to Debbie, played by my wife Sheila Kelley,” admits Richard Schiff of his work on “The Good Doctor.” Watch our exclusive video interview above where he adds, “We got to play the proposal scene all over again and (showrunner) David Shore was kind enough to let me rework that a little bit. My wife loves it whenever I pay attention to her. So when I pay attention to her on camera with that kind of intensity she was very pleased. There was a beautiful intensity that Sheila and I brought to that scene. She’s so alive in her acting. I adore working with her.”

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “The Good Doctor” Season 2, Episode 18, “Trampoline.”]
In “The Good Doctor” Season 2 finale, two characters have made breakthroughs in how they perceive Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore), the surgical resident at St. Bonaventure Hospital who has autism and savant syndrome. Both situations demonstrate that it’s not only the responsibility of the person with autism to try and fit into society, but for neurotypical people to also understand the benefits of perceiving the world through a very specific and less conventional point of view.
In the episode, Shaun gives the rather cryptic diagnosis of “trampoline” to a patient before he himself passes out from a medical condition. Dr. Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas) insists on standing in the same spot, at the same height in the hospital room as Shaun, hoping to understand what he meant to say. Oddly enough, the strategy works. She notices a symptom she had missed before and...

The Good Doctor Season 1's penultimate episode ended with a major cliffhanger, making me nervous and excited for the upcoming season finale!
On The Good Doctor Season 1 Episode 17, Shaun does not understand why a patient with facial paralysis wants to risk her life so she can finally smile. Meanwhile, Jared works with a patient he once treated for burns, and Shaun sets Dr. Glassman up on a date.
After talking with Dr. Andrews, Shaun went around smiling at people to see if it released endorphins. While the smile was quite unsettling, as Jared said, it was nice to see Shaun putting forth the effort.
Recently, we have seen Shaun research various things that he does not understand because of his autism.
Do you want to be a comedian? People getting your jokes must be very important to you if you think it’s worth the risk of dying during elective surgery.

Need to catch up? Check out the previous Good Doctor recap here.
This week on The Good Doctor, Jared reconnected with a former patient, while another MD suffered a major health scare.
The aforementioned Dr. Kalu was delighted to see Celeste, the woman whose third-degree burns previously took away most of her skin. At the time, the doctor applied tilapia scales as part of an experimental procedure that would allow her real skin to grow back over time. Five months later, she was back for a consult, and there was an obvious attraction between the patient and her physician.

Shaun hopes to make a love connection during Monday’s penultimate Season 1 episode of The Good Doctor (ABC, 10/9c).
TVLine has your exclusive first look at the uncomfortable encounter, as Shaun attempts to set up Dr. Glassman with cafeteria barista Debbi (played by Lost vet Sheila Kelley, aka Richard Schiff’s real-life significant other).
“Debbi, you flirted with Dr. Glassman,” Shaun says to the unsuspecting counter girl. “I have a new friend, and he needs one, too.” He then pushes the hospital head towards Debbi, touting that her facial proportions are “close to optimal… and you should find her attractive.

By the time Cameron Crowe made Singles in 1992, the 35-year-old director was already a decade into his career's second act. A former journalist for Rolling Stone, he'd pivoted towards the movies after adapting his book about going undercover at a Los Angeles high school – Fast Times at Ridgemont High – for the screen in 1982. And his directorial debut, Say Anything... (1989), proved that he had a knack for capturing teen spirit.
Crowe, however, wanted his audience to grow up with him, so for his follow-up movie, he turned his attention to twentysomethings.

Melissa McCarthy is truly a gift to us all. And now, thanks to her work as Sean Spicer on the past season of Saturday Night Live, the comedic genius just nabbed this year’s outstanding guest actress in a comedy series Emmy.
These quick-and-beautiful McCarthy moments below are guaranteed to provide you with your daily fix of the giggles, and make you love the star even more than you already do (if that’s possible).
1. Her Sean Spicer impression.
In February, the funnywoman made a surprise Saturday Night Live appearance to deliver an uncanny portrayal of now-resigned White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer.

Good god, it’s been what seems like a lifetime since I last saw Pure Luck. I’m not even sure it previously made the leap from VHS, where I first saw it back in the early 90s, to DVD here in the UK. Back when the film was first released both Danny Glover and Martin Short could do no wrong. Glover was riding high off the success of the Lethal Weapon franchise, scoring lead roles in Predator 2 and Flight of the Intruder; whilst Short had scored back-to-back hits with Innerspace and Three Fugitives… Well I say do no wrong, but maybe that should have read “could have” done no wrong, given the bad reception afforded this comedy…

Enjoying a healthy festival run after its premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, and a tour that brought it to SXSW and Toronto, Adam Wingard’s The Guest arrives on Blu-ray shortly after scoring a nod for Best Editing at the Independent Spirit Awards (though it’s unfortunate there wasn’t any room for some other awards love, such as for cinematography for Dan Stevens). Making their return to distribution, the Picturehouse folks grossed north of a quarter of a million at the box office, and the film had releases in multiple regions across the globe.
After contributing to several anthology films, including the V/H/S films and The ABCs of Death, director Wingard and screenwriter Simon Barrett return to their first feature since 2011’s You’re Next, (a film that finally hit theaters to warm reception in 2013) with The Guest. Chicago – As the classification of “cult hit” becomes a progressively mainstream notion considering the multitude of “The Room” screenings across our great nation every weekend or the universal quotability of “Troll 2,” “The Guest” arrives. It is a movie made with the degree of madness often found only at midnight, usually at film festivals, or during special events at indie movie houses like Chicago’s Music Box Theater.
And yet, through the ascending career of former Joe Swanberg collaborator Adam Wingard, it is gloriously opening without the cult following previously installed, groomed to unleash bloody hell on viewers who have set ideas either on the sweetness of “Downton Abbey” star Dan Stevens, or even what an action/horror film can currently offer.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
A contagious crux of the movie’s glee, Stevens has a visible and absurd amount of fun with his title character, a hilariously perfect cartoon of masculinity and the American war machine.

You’re Next was my favourite films of last year, so I was very excited to see director Adam Wingard’s latest, The Guest. We’re introduced to the Petersons, a small-town family who lost a son in the war in the Middle East. David (Dan Stevens, apparently best known for appearing in Downton Abbey), a former member of the deceased’s squad turns up unannounced one day to pay his respects, stays the night and finds himself ingratiated into the family’s life, sticking up for the bullied younger brother, providing dad with a drinking buddy, keeping an eye out for gothy older sister and generally being very nice to mum. The Guest is a thriller that knows exactly what it wants to be. Playful, kinetic and riotously entertaining, it’s a slick throwback to the sexy, noirish actioners of generations past, a winking tribute to the films of John Carpenter and other ’80s horror directors, as soaked in blood as it is stylishly lit in colorful neon. Director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett, who so fruitfully toyed with the home invasion horror subgenre in You’re Next, have even more success tackling the action-thriller, emerging with an absolute blast of a film that could be held up as a new classic of the genre in a few years from now.
The kind of movie we’re in for is made clear from the get-go, as the title appears in bold, neon letters. We open on a man running down a country road, his movement brisk and almost robotic. There...

It's that time of the year again, when not-so-jolly critics start making those lists, checking them twice, to break down an entire year of movies in list form. Last year, I split up my year-end piece into three separate stories, Most Overrated, Most Underrated and my Top 10. This year, I'm changing things up again, ever so slightly, discarding the Overrated category entirely. It's a category I always seem to have trouble with it, and, this year, only two of my picks were wide releases, with another that hasn't even hit theaters yet. I'm also changing the Underrated list to "Overlooked," since it fits better with what I'm trying to say: that these five movies below are truly fantastic, but simply weren't given their just due in theaters.
That's not to say I'm completely surprised that this quintet is overlooked. After all, the "widest" release for all of these films was a whopping 63 theaters,...

I’ve been a fan of Adam Wingard since a friend of mine told me I needed to watch Home Sick. Good directors have a unique style that’s all their own, and is immediately recognizable to their fans; Adam Wingard’s is one of my favorite. No matter the size in scope of the story he’s telling, his films have a smaller, more personal feel to them. They tend to center around one or two characters, and never stray too far from them. It takes talent to make that kind of movie work, and Wingard nails it more times than not. You’re Next was one of my favorite movies of last year ( I didn’t get to see it until it got wide release), so my expectations for The Guest were pretty high going in. For the most part it delivered, but fell just short of being...

The Guest opened in limited release last week and, after performing well, is platforming out into more theaters this weekend. The new film from director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett (You're Next, V/H/S/2, A Horrible Way to Die) is a lot of fun (as evidenced by this insanely cool trailer) and a big part of that is the swagger and southern charm that former Downton Abbey standout Dan Stevens brings to his role. Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett are Fantastic Fest staples thanks to their surprise smash You're Next in 2011. The movie matched a cool, riotous attitude with a home invasion sub-genre that had been poking its head at horror audiences for years. Now they've again brought a cool, riotous attitude in droves. The Guest is more action than horror, but the edge is still there. Aided by Wingard's enormous talent for mood, an '80s vibe that isn't just pink neon and a synthesized score, and a rousing performance from Dan Stevens, The Guest delivers a sharp, swift punch to the chest of bland action and banal thrillers. Read on! Stevens plays David, a soldier just returning home from a long tour. His first stop upon returning to American soil is to the family of Caleb, a fellow soldier who died in combat and who David promised he would check in on his family.

As soon as the title card interrupts an otherwise calm beginning, it’s clear that this film is going to be absolutely bonkers. More importantly, it’s going to be so much fun to watch. It delivers on that first impression and more, never letting up in its sense of genre-bending glee and always doubling down on its extremes while maintaining a level head aesthetic tension. This is a film that puts a wicked grin on the audience, similar to the wicked grin its mysterious central character sports.
