The announcement of the U.K.’s new Independent Film Tax Credit (Iftc) back in March had a near instantaneous impact, at least in the case of one film production.
“Giant,” the biopic of boxer Naseem Hamed and starring Amir El-Masry, was in advanced pre-production when the news landed, with plans to shoot location work in Hamed’s home town of Sheffield and all the interiors — including the essential boxing rings — in Malta. Sets were already being built on the Mediterranean island, which has been courting numerous film productions in recent years thanks to a generous 40% tax rebate initiative.
But then the Iftc was unveiled and the U.K., when it came to producer’s all-important bottom line, was suddenly much more competitive. What had previously been a 20% tax break was now around 32.5%. Given the costs involved in shipping the film overseas, “Giant” didn’t need to pack up its bags.

Filming is underway in London on In the Shadows, starring BAFTA-winning actor Jasmine Jobson in the biopic about female boxing champion Ramla Ali.
Jobson recently won big at the television awards for her role in Top Boy. She plays Ali, a woman who secretly pursued her dream to become the first Somali-British professional boxing champion.
Alongside Jobson stars Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders, Last Breath) as her husband, Richard Moore, while Gershwyn Eustache Jr (Andor, Small Axe, Fortitude) plays Ali’s boxing coach. The real-life couple of Ali and Moore serve as executive producers.
“At its heart, In the Shadows is a unique love story woven into a rich family drama that showcases the challenges and triumphs of Ramla and Richard, a mixed-race couple,” a plot synopsis reads. “As they navigate racial and cultural barriers, their shared strength and mutual support sets them apart as role models for a new generation.

BAFTA-winning “Top Boy” star Jasmine Jobson — recently seen in Andrea Arnold’s Cannes-bowing “Bird” — is set to play trailblazing Somali-British professional boxer, model and Unicef Ambassador Ramla Ali in “In the Shadows.” She takes over from Letitia Wright, who was attached when the project was first announced last year.
Filming has now begun in London on the feature, which will also star Finn Cole (“Last Breath,” “Peaky Blinders,” “Fast & Furious 9”) as Ali’s husband, Richard Moore, while Gershwyn Eustache Jr (“Andor,” “Small Axe,” “Fortitude”) plays her boxing coach.
“In the Shadows” will mark the narrative feature debut of Emmy Award and three-time BAFTA-winning documentarian Anthony Wonke. The film is produced by BAFTA winner and Oscar-nomination producer Lee Magiday, Madeleine Sanderson (“Being AP,” “Fighting for a City”), and presented by Civic Studios (“Christmas Karma, Schirkoa: In Lies We Trust”). The film’s subject Ali will serve as an executive producer.

Transmission Films has released an international trailer for The Critic, which is an adaptation of Anthony Quinn’s novel Curtain Call.
An official selection at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023, The Critic centers on Jimmy Erskine (Ian McKellen), the Daily Chronicle‘s most famous and featured theatre critic of the age; David Brooke (Mark Strong), with whom he clashes after recently inheriting the paper; and a young actress, Nina Land (Gemma Arterton), who is devastated by Jimmy’s recent negative review of her.
As the three become entangled in a whodunnit wrapped in a Faustian pact, their strange triangle winds tighter and tighter to devastating effect for all those caught in the deadly web of blackmail and betrayal.
The cast includes Ian McKellen, Gemma Arterton, Mark Strong, Ben Barnes, Alfred Enoch, Romola Garai, and Lesley Manville.
The Critic was directed by Arnand Tucker from a script by Patrick Marbert.

The U.K.’s entertainment industry has responded to Labour’s landslide victory in the country’s general election, which ends 14 years of Conservative rule with Keir Starmer set to become prime minister.
With Labour’s win widely anticipated thanks to the plummeting public support for the Conservatives, performing arts union Equity sent out a statement long before the first results were announced that laid out some of its hopes for the incoming political regime.

The Death Of Robin Hood, starring Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer, has secured a UK distributor following A24’s acquisition of the film’s US rights.
When we recently learned of the plans to make a Robin Hood movie featuring the twin talents of Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer, it raised an eyebrow or two. A couple of weeks ago at Cannes, the project was unveiled and US rights for the film were quickly snapped up by A24.

Do you know the truth behind the identity of Agent Argylle? Matthew Vaughn's action rom-com for Apple starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sam Rockwell first debuted in theaters on February 2, 2024, but the film is already going to be available to watch at home just over a month later. Centered around a reclusive, cat-loving author named Elly Conway (Howard), the woman finds herself at the center of an espionage thriller right out of the novels she's written when a real-life spy named Aidan (Rockwell) realizes that her books reflect the actions of an actual spy organization. The film itself has been extremely polarizing, with the majority of critics disliking the picture, although /Film's own Ethan Anderton aligned with the majority of audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and liked it quite a bit!
