While “Malcolm in the Middle” wrapped in 2006 after seven seasons on Fox, Cranston has been trying to revisit the universe for a long time.

“I’ve been trying to get this going for 12 years. I was the one poking the bear, going, ‘Let’s do it, let’s do it, let’s do it,'” Cranston said on the carpet ahead of Variety and Apple TV+’s “The Studio” screening and Q&a on Wednesday. “Finally, Linwood Boomer, our creator of the show, got tired of me poking him. Christopher Masterson and Justin Berfield have joined the four-episode revival alongside their original series co-stars Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek, and Kiana Madeira, playing Malcolm’s (Muniz) girlfriend. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, Anthony Timpano, Vaughan Murrae and Keeley Karsten have also signed on to the series.

Masterson and Berfield will reprise their roles as Malcolm’s older brothers, Francis and Reese. Ellsworth-Clark (Nightmare Alley) will play younger brother Dewey, taking over the role from Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey in the 2000-06 Fox series. Long before she was a two-time Academy Award-winning actor able to tackle some of the toughest, weirdest roles in cinema and television, Emma Stone was just a young actor trying to make it in a cutthroat industry. After a number of TV guest spots in small roles, including a hilarious bit on "Malcolm in the Middle" where she played a bully beefing with the Wilkerson family matriarch, Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), Stone would eventually garner attention with the 2006 hit comedy "Superbad," which was responsible for both her trademark red hair and her career taking off. Before that, however, she played an integral but tiny role on the Disney Channel hit kids show "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody," although it's absolutely impossible to spot her.

The two, who portrayed besties Malcolm (Muniz) and Stevie (Traylor) on the hit sitcom, appear in the upcoming science fiction thriller, Renner. That’s right! Cranston has decided to return to his roots, choosing his most popular on-screen comedy persona, Hal Wilkerson. It's the year 2024, and we're still trying to get justice for Lizzie McGuire, even in the face of other sitcoms of her era making comebacks. Well, the latest news out of Disney+ revealed another revival of a nostalgic 2000s fan-favorite TV show, and I can't help but feel frustrated.

On Dec. 13, Disney+ shared the unexpected announcement that Malcolm in the Middle will be returning with four all-new episodes with Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, and Jane Kaczmarek set to reprise their roles. (No word yet on additional cast returns.) The cast members each recorded videos to announce the truly surprising but equally thrilling news with fans.
