In a world with serial killers bonded to alien symbiotes, mad scientists that have robotic appendages, and some villains are literally born in Hell, it's an impressive feat one of the Marvel universe's most feared foes is Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin of Crime. Debuting in Amazing Spider-Man #50 and inspired by classic Hollywood actor Sydney Greenstreet, Fisk shifted his focus to the Devil of Hell's Kitchen, trying a number of tactics to bring down Daredevil and demonstrating just how far he's willing to go to take down the Man Without Fear and a host of other heroes who thought crossing him was a good idea.
Wielding an impressive intellect, incredible physical strength, and a drive that has seen heroes' lives crumble in front of them, it stands to reason that when bringing the character to life, the star playing them had to be suitable for the role. Over the years,...

Ben Affleck’s Daredevil will always be remembered as a massive critical flop despite its initial success. At the time, comic book films were still in the age of exploration, and with the advent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Netflix version of Daredevil, fans realized how underwhelming the movie version was.

The storyline paled in comparison to that of the television show; even Affleck’s performance was criticized for lacking nuance and depth. Still, there were many great scenes that remained iconic.

In the first few years of the millennium, studios were finally getting hip to the fact that superhero movies, done in a comic-accurate way, could be big at the box office. Bryan Singer’s X-Men opened the door, but it was Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man that made the genre a no-brainer. One studio that was eager to get in on the comic book movie action was 20th Century Fox, which produced X-Men. They managed to get the rights to one of Marvel’s most enduring superheroes, Daredevil, producing a film that was solid, if unspectacular, when it came out on Valentine’s Day in 2003. The movie marked Ben Affleck’s first outing as a superhero and proved divisive among fans. Some say it’s underrated, while others say it’s dated garbage. Who’s right? Let’s find out Wtf Happened to Daredevil.

These days, Marvel Comics character Daredevil is a household name. Portrayed by Charlie Cox in both the Netflix series and the Disney Plus revival, The Devil of Hell's Kitchen exists as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking on the likes of Wilson Fisk and Bullseye in dark, bloody fashion. But years before that, one of Hollywood's biggest stars brought the character to the big screen to fight those same foes, but the story was not as successful as its current chapter.
Ben Affleck brought Matt Murdock to life in the 2003 film Daredevil, co-starring alongside Jennifer Garner's Elektra, Colin Farrell's Bullseye, and Michael Clarke Duncan's Kingpin. It was a very early 2000s property in terms of its aesthetic and vibe, receiving mixed reviews at a time when most superhero properties did, but it was ultimately a success at the box office.
So, why oh why did Daredevil 2 not happen?...

Colin Farrell is quite literally one of the finest talents in Hollywood’s entertainment industry and his outstanding performance in The Penguin perfectly proves it. Matt Damon Almost Played Daredevil (Photo Credit – Koimoi)
Before Ben Affleck rocked the red suit in Daredevil (2003), Matt Damon had the chance to play the blind vigilante himself—and he passed. Damon almost took the role of ultimately making Affleck the king of Hell’s Kitchen. Daredevil was their comic of choice as kids, but when the casting call came, Damon had second thoughts.
“For us, it was always ‘Daredevil’ — that’s the comic we read when we were kids,” he said. But, when push came to shove, Damon bailed. “I hadn’t seen the director [Mark Steven Johnson’s] work, and I didn’t know. So I just said, ‘No.’ Ben was like, ‘I gotta do it.’”
Let’s pause for a moment. Daredevil with Damon? A whole other multiverse of people. But instead, Damon dodged the spandex bullet while Affleck took on the role, starring in a flick...

Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Stan Lee was known as a Marvel Comics writer and editorial director. He was instrumental in creating some of the company's most prominent characters and oversaw the entire comic book universe's direction. Lee went from the voice of Marvel to its cameo king over the course of his illustrious career, and even fans who weren't familiar with him before soon got to know the guy, thanks to Lee's frequent MCU appearances. However, he was stealthily starting his cameo career well before the MCU, and unbeknownst to many, his résumé includes a truly offbeat appearance in Disney's "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement."
In this 2004 romantic comedy that depicts the further adventures of Princess of Genovia Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway), Lee has a brief but fun turn as a foreign wedding guest who does his best to greet Queen Clarisse (Julie Andrews) with language skills that,...

Quick Links How Did Ghost Rider Get Adapted into Two Feature Films Pre-mcu? How Was Nicolas Cage's Johnny Blaze Different from the Comic Book Version? Is There an MCU Ghost Rider?
Just 48 hours after Valentine's Day, 2007, Mark Steven Johnson's Ghost Rider hit theaters, introducing movie-going audiences everywhere to Nicolas Cage's rendition of the hellfire and brimstone superhero, Johnny Blaze, aka the Ghost Rider. On both the page and the screen, Blaze is a former motorcycle stuntman imbued with devilish powers to slay the damned and boasting a seriously demented flaming skull for a face.
In short, Johnny Blaze is the kind of role that goofball like Nicolas Cage was born to play and play it he did: twice. Despite its incredibly cheesy nature, Ghost Rider has since become remembered as an over-the-top franchise that just so happened to make some major changes to the source material for Johnny Blaze.

The Western genre has tackled a wide variety of sub-genres and topics, ranging from revisionist deconstruction to fantasy and science fiction. One of the best types of Wild West movies is the supernatural Western, which uses everything from ghosts and vampires to folklore to bring audiences compelling twists on the genre. While some of these films are explicitly on the horror side of cinema, others are darker adaptations of the genre's classics, like Shane and Rio Bravo.
Supernatural Westerns offer audiences an unexpected look at the Old West, using the mystique and isolation of the setting to great effect. While the genre tends to be more subtle in its use of the supernatural than others, a variety of filmmakers have shown the West can be a place of mystery, horror, and suspense when written properly. Ranging from hauntings to superheroes, a good supernatural twist can help make the Wild West...

It remains uncertain if and when there will be a new Ghost Rider movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For now, fans can revisit the past two films featuring Nicolas Cage in the lead role.
Starting on Nov. 1, both of Cage's Ghost Rider movies will start streaming alongside one another on Hulu. The movies getting a new streaming home comes months after fans of Cage's Johnny Blaze were left disappointed after the character did not make a special appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine. While Deadpool & Wolverine brought in big names from past Marvel movies, like Wesley Snipes' Blade and Jennifer Garner's Elektra, Ghost Rider was left out in the cold. Ryan Reynolds confirmed that Ghost Rider appearing was considered at the start of production, but he didn't specify if Cage was actually approached or why the cameo didn't end up happening.

Stan Lee, with the help of collaborators such as Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, co-created many of Marvel’s most iconic characters, including Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, and the Avengers. Many of these characters are now central to the MCU and have achieved cultural icon status.
Given his pivotal role in shaping Marvel’s legacy, Stan Lee’s opinions have always been highly influential. However, even this legendary figure may have been mistaken about one of Marvel’s most popular heroes—Daredevil.
“Daredevil” was one of the early Marvel superheroes to be adapted into a live-action film. Released in 2003, it starred Ben Affleck as the Man Without Fear, with Jennifer Garner as Elektra and Colin Farrell as Bullseye.
Despite generating solid box office revenue, the film was widely regarded as a flop. Many fans were disappointed, with criticism aimed at Ben Affleck’s portrayal of Matt Murdock/Daredevil as underwhelming.

Marvel superheroes Ghost Rider and Daredevil, who have each had their share of movie and TV adaptations, could have been among the many who appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine. While the third movie in the Deadpool franchise had its fair share of legacy cameo appearances, there were clearly too many to use, and that means fans were denied an even more stacked cast of returning characters from Marvel movies past.

Nicolas Cage has always had a soft spot for devils and tragedies. The actor’s work has always veered far from the mainstream Hollywood recipe, often encroaching into territories that, for the lack of a better word, can only be labeled as weird. Ironically, Cage built a reputation out of his eccentricities, making his roles work out spectacularly in his favor.

Through the years, Cage has established himself as an unimpeachable figure on the fringes of Hollywood, an A-lister by the power of his dramatic work and yet ridiculous enough to be remembered more for his role in the 27% rated Ghost Rider than the 97% rated Pig. It is his work in the expansion of the comic book fantasy that makes him a living legend to this day.

Deadpool & Wolverine is, it's fair to say, absolutely loaded with cameo appearances, with more Marvel characters showing up from franchises past than you can shake a Peter at (steady). Yet there are always the ones that got away. According to actor/co-writer Ryan Reynolds, he came close to convincing Nicolas Cage – or as his younger alter ego might put it, Nic fuckiiiiiiing Cage – to don his spiky leather jacket and flame-sporting skull to return as Johnny Blaze, Aka Ghost Rider.

Some original live-action Disney movies like Hocus Pocus and Enchanted celebrate classic Disney tropes, providing humor and nostalgia. Movies like Tuck Everlasting and Saving Mr. Banks offer fresh perspectives on beloved stories outside of remakes. Pirates of the Caribbean and National Treasure showcase Disney's success with original live-action films beyond remakes.
In an age of cinema hugely characterized by all of Disney's live-action remakes, there are several original live-action Disney movies that are better than most of them. The Disney live-action remake trend took off in the mid-2010s, which can be traced back to the success of Cinderella. Maleficent came out earlier, serving as a soft retelling of Sleeping Beauty from its magnificent villainess' perspective. These movies have seen varying levels of success in capturing what made the original a hit while adding something to the story.
There are still plenty of upcoming Disney live-action remakes that will join the ranks of these titles.

21 years ago, 20th Century Fox released Daredevil, where Ben Affleck donned the red suit to face off against icons like Michael Clarke Duncan as the formidable Kingpin and Colin Farrell’s menacing Bullseye, with Jon Favreau delivering heart as the loyal Foggy. Despite a shaky reception from critics & a modest box office triumph of $179 million, which set the stage for Jennifer Garner’s subsequent solo venture Elektra, Daredevil remains a remarkable topic of discussion.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner in Daredevil (2003) | 20th Century Fox
But did you know that in 2004, those bitter opinions began to turn with the release of a grittier, R-rated director’s cut? This version injected a new lease of life into the franchise, earning nods for its balanced narrative and garnering a more positive critical response, with a striking improvement acknowledged by fans and pundits alike. So much so that admirers are still raving about the 2003 film’s revised cut.

Nicolas Cage returns to Marvel after 13 years, starring in a Spider-Man Noir TV show in Sony's Universe. Cage's past as Ghost Rider explores the potential darker, unique acting style he may bring to Spider-Man Noir. Executive produced by Lord and Miller, the Noir project signifies Sony's expansion into live-action TV after disappointing films.
Nicolas Cage is starring in a new live-action Spider-Man TV show as part of Sonys Spider-Man Universe, through which hes breaking a 13-year Marvel streak. The superhero genre shows no signs of stopping, and its different connected universes continue to expand, some faster than others and some more successfully than others, as well. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe keeps building its multiverse, Sonys Spider-Man Universe keeps struggling after some truly disappointing movies, but its now ready to branch out to TV/streaming with various projects, and at the top of the list is a Spider-Man Noir live-action TV show.

In the early 2000s, following the success of the X-Men franchise kick-off, new ones started to brew up. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man starring Tobey Maguire and Mark Steven Johnson’s Daredevil starring Ben Affleck came forth as the front-runners releasing within a gap of about a year with the former coming out first. However, the iconic stint by the web-slinging superhero left a lasting impression on fans and became such a massive success that it almost ruined the outing of the vigilante from Hell’s Kitchen.

Although Iger emphasized the importance of quality over quantity for the MCU, Marvel Studios appears to have numerous projects in confirmed development, along with several others rumored to be in the works. Last year, speculation circulated about a Ghost Rider TV show, with some suggesting Nicholas Cage’s potential involvement. While Ghost Rider has already made an appearance in the MCU in some capacity, recent rumors indicate the possibility of a standalone movie for the character.

Despite Iger’s recent comments on how MCU should focus on quality over quantity Marvel Studios has plenty of projects confirmed to be in development but also plenty of other projects that are only rumored to be in development. Last year there were plenty of rumors going around mentioning the Ghost Rider TV show, some rumors stating that Nicholas Cage might be playing him.
We already have Ghost Rider in the MCU, sort of, but if the most recent rumors are true, Ghost Rider might get his standalone movie.

The Man Without Fear’s archnemesis will finally make their MCU debut in Daredevil: Born Again. No, not Kingpin; Vincent D’Onofrio has already mastered that part. And no, we don’t mean Stilt-Man, who hasn’t lumbered into live-action yet.
We’re referring to the master assassin Bullseye. Deadline reports that Wilson Bethel will join the cast of Daredevil: Born Again, which hopefully means fans will finally get the chance to see Bullseye done right in live action.
Of course, Bullseye has been portrayed on screen before. The 2003 movie Daredevil stuffed the screen with too many characters, including Colin Farrell as Bullseye. Writer and director Mark Steven Johnson didn’t take the most subtle approach, and basically let Farrell do whatever he wanted as the man who couldn’t miss. Many would think that in order to be a combat hero, the sense of sight is non-negotiable. However, cinema has shown otherwise. Proving that discipline and the will to fight can birth Blind Warriors -- some of the most empowering movie characters to watch. Robbed of sight for a variety of reasons, a Blind Warrior's other senses have been heightened, and they have a spiritual relationship with nature and the cosmos that allows them to kick some serious butt.
Luke Skywalker's first piece of Jedi Training from Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars involved removing his vision with a blast helmet, so he could feel his adversary, because eyes can often deceive the other senses. To remind readers, outside of Batman and Superman, superhero characters were once often considered to be bad bets at the box office. Many film execs assumed that audiences were too small to make a superhero movie profitable, and the special effects needed to realize a superhero character were going to be too extensive to do cheaply. It wouldn't be until film VFX technology had sufficiently advanced that certain filmmakers would give mainstream Marvel superheroes a try. 2000 saw the release of Bryan Singer's "X-Men," a steel-glinting superhero flick that developed its own aesthetic instead of cleaving to the colorful costumes of the comic book page. 2002 saw the release of Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man," a limp and unengaging drama, but one with first-rate Spider-Man visuals that still look impressive to this day. It looked like a trend was starting.
That trend seemingly hit two speedbumps in 2003, however, with the release...

Once upon a time, superhero aficionados had to get their fix in the pages of comic books. On rare occasions, the adventures of those heroes were taken to the screen, with characters like Captain America and Batman starring in serialized adventures as early as the 1940s. The colorful camp of the "Batman" TV series in the '60s brought comic books to new mainstream popularity, setting the stage for the rise of blockbuster comic book movies in the late 20th century. Now, multiplexes are bursting with superhero movies, a genre that has grown to become one of Hollywood's most lucrative; in fact, four of the top 10 highest-grossing movies of all time have their roots in the pages of comics.
Of course, hit films inevitably breed sequels, and films featuring Iron Man, Spider-Man, Ant-Man, Superman, Batman and various other super-powered types with "man" in their names have habitually returned for various big-screen adventures.

2007's Ghost Rider brought the dark hero to life, for the first time, on the big screen. Ghost Rider also introduced a wildly dangerous enemy that was barely present in the finale. As a result, Ghost Rider underutilized a villain that could've led to a scary and epic final battle.
The 2007 adaptation of Ghost Rider rarely tops anyone's Best Of list: a forgettable effects-laden placeholder that basically gave the studio something to market in February. Star Nicolas Cage was still a viable A-lister, and director Mark Steven-Johnson -- while imperfect -- still possessed a deep love and respect for the character. (His big-screen Daredevil is underrated.) Nonetheless, while it turned a mild profit at the box office, it failed to generate much enthusiasm from fans. With Iron Man heralding the arrival of the Marvel Cinematic Universe just one year later, it feels like the last gasp of a passing era in retrospect.

Since Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield made their glorifying return as Spider-Men in 2021’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ we sort of entered an era in which many superhero movies want to build up hype with special, long-awaited returns of beloved actors in their superhero roles. DC’s attempt at that with Michael Keaton’s Batman wasn’t so successful, but Marvel’s upcoming ‘Deadpool 3’ is followed by a huge hype thanks to the announced return of Hugh Jackman as the Wolverine.
Basically, any long-awaited return is possible now. Garner's return may signal that this film will delve into multiversal chaos, which is always welcomed. Additionally, it means that the MCU is retroactively including previous non-mcu films in its canon.

Jennifer Garner will pick up the sai after almost 20 years in Deadpool 3. The Merc with a Mouth's next movie seems to be creating its own multiverse of madness, taking the best from films like the most recent Doctor Strange sequel, The Flash and even Sony Pictures' Spider-Verse. Donald Petrie's "Grumpy Old Men" was released in theaters on Christmas Day in 1993, serving as that year's "take your parents to see it" film. Prior to "Grumpy Old Men," the film's two stars, Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon, had appeared in five films together, including "The Fortune Cookie," Neil Simon's "The Odd Couple," "Kotch," "The Front Page," and "Buddy Buddy." The two were so well known for their chemistry, they were often considered one of comedy's great, prevailing duos. To this day, they are often mentioned together, and the two are buried not too far apart in the same cemetery in Westwood, CA.
While Lemmon and Matthau worked together regularly throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, there was a notable gap in their shared résumé. From 1981 until 1993, the pair did not work in tandem — even though they both appeared in Oliver Stone's 1991 film, "JFK," they had no scenes together.

Now that Matt Murdock is in the MCU, the original plan for the sequel to 2003's Daredevil can finally be told in Marvel Studios' Daredevil: Born Again. Mark Steven Johnson's 2003 Daredevil film starred future Batman actor, Ben Affleck, as the Devil of Hell's Kitchen, a role which would later be taken on by Charlie Cox for Marvel Television's Daredevil series on Netflix. The original Daredevil film released in an era where superhero movies were only just starting to become more popular, with the releases of Blade in 1998 and X-Men in 2000 helping to boost public awareness of comic book movies, but this didn't save it from falling at the first hurdle.
Despite mixed reviews, 2003's Daredevil led to a spinoff centered on Elektra Natchios, portrayed by Jennifer Garner, which was originally supposed to lead into a sequel to Daredevil, which would have seen Affleck suit up once again as the Man Without Fear.

The original (and to date only) big screen Daredevil movie turned 20 years old last week. There wasn’t exactly a deluge of fanfare over this fact. For obvious reasons. Released during the boom years for glossy, hyper-edited action movies that had one eye on MTV tie-ins and another on the post-theatrical DVD double-dip market, director Mark Steven Johnson and star Ben Affleck’s Daredevil arrived into cinemas on Valentine’s Day weekend 2003 as a chopped-to-the-bone, 103-minute collection of studio priorities under 20th Century Fox’s then-chairman, Tom Rothman.
To give you an idea of how different a time this was for the industry, not until the 11th hour of pre-production was Johnson, a lifelong fan of Daredevil comics (specifically Frank Miller’s run in the 1980s), even allowed to give Matt Murdock a red-horned costume. Prior to the release of Sam Raimi and Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man (2002), Fox wasn’t convinced...

Before Charlie Cox started swinging through the streets of Hell’s Kitchen for Marvel’s Daredevil, Ben Affleck suited up as the Man Without Fear for the studio’s previous attempt at bringing the horned hero to movie fans. The 2003 movie garnered mixed reviews from fans and critics, setting Daredevil back in Marvel’s list of superheroes to prioritize for future projects. Despite the film’s lukewarm reception, two prominent actors wanted to join the production. Those two actors are Seth Rogen and Edward Norton. While you’re contemplating a world where either of these actors stars in 2003’s Daredevil, I’ll unpack the details of what could have been.
Speaking with Yahoo, Daredevil director Mark Steven Johnson explained that the studio wanted big names for the film. Daredevil was relatively unknown to the general public then, so Marvel wanted star power to elevate the character and put asses in seats.

Long before Charlie Cox became the Daredevil we all know and love with his excellent Netflix show (soon to be sort of revived as a Disney+ "Daredevil" series), Ben Affleck had a go at it. After "X-Men" in 2000 and Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" in 2002, studios were keen to repeat their success and began churning out more and more cape-based fare that would ultimately lead to the deluge of superhero media we're currently enduring. But in the lead-up to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's dominance, there were a fair few missteps, 20th Century Fox's "Daredevil" being one of them.
Written and directed by Mark Steven Johnson, 2003's "Daredevil" didn't quite the heights of "X-Men" or "Spider-Man." Affleck admitted that he regrets the movie and it's generally seen as somewhat of a blunder. Prior to helming the film, Johnson had penned the frankly bizarre "Jack Frost," which saw former "Batman" star Michael Keaton...

20 years ago, comic book movies were in an odd place. "X-Men" helped open the floodgates in 2000, particularly for Marvel, but it was the absolutely astonishing success of 2002's "Spider-Man" that represented the point of no return. Thus, other superheroes quickly made their way to the silver screen in the years that followed, with mixed results. One fascinating example is 2003's "Daredevil," which starred Ben Affleck as the Man Without Fear, and his future wife (and eventual ex-wife) Jennifer Garner as Elektra. The movie wasn't quite a flop, though not quite a hit, and didn't start a franchise for Matt Murdock like Marvel's mutants and Peter Parker now had. It was an up-the-middle, modest misfire.
The project was originally set up at Sony,...
