The Death and Life of River Song is a continuation of an ongoing series of audio dramas featuring the character, with River meeting the Fifth Doctor's companion Tegan (Janet Fielding) and the Seventh Doctor's pal Ace (Sophie Aldred) when they're all suddenly stranded in 1860. Four new serials begin with "Castaways," where Tegan and Ace find themselves wandering through the newly-opened London Underground with no memory of how they got there.

Doctor Who showrunners Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat come together to celebrate the "phenomenal" casting of one Doctor in particular. Looking back at the Fourth Doctor era, Tom Baker assumed the role in 1974, leading the show for 172 episodes across 7 seasons. Baker's final battle against the Master (Anthony Ainley) in 1981's "Logopolis" brought his adventures to an end with the Fourth Doctor's regeneration, but he has since reprised the role in one-off appearances and audio dramas.

When speaking to Doctor Who Magazine (via RadioTimes) in a larger retrospective on Phillip Hinchcliffe's producing tenure, Moffat turned attention to the cast of that era, particularly praising Baker, Elizabeth Sladen, and Ian Marter's Tardis team of the Fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, and Harry Sullivan. In January 2024, Fourth Doctor companion Louise Jameson returned to Doctor Who in the short promotional film Leela vs the Time War for the release of the Season 15 Blu-ray boxset. It showed Jameson’s character on Gallifrey in the final moments of the Time War being threatened with extermination by the Daleks. “This is not how this ends,” says Leela, before transporting herself to the safety of the Tardis.

As reported by RadioTimes.com, writer/director Pete McTighe said at a BFI screening of 1977 episode “Horror of Fang Rock”, that he saw the new scene as “an opportunity to right [the] wrong” of Jameson’s character’s original exit, in which Leela was hurriedly married off to a Gallifreyan Time Lord.

McTighe has written increasingly ambitious promotional films for these series releases with original actors returning to play their roles, though the complexity of producing them means they won’t be done for every boxset.

Leela's departure from Doctor Who was handled poorly and it was an injustice to such an iconic character and talented actress. The original ending for Leela, where she leaves the Doctor to pursue a romantic relationship, was cliché and disappointing to both the actress and the producers. Recently, a BBC short film has given Leela the ending she deserved, showing her as an honored commander and fixing the abrupt conclusion to her story.

Decades after Leela (Louise Jameson) left Doctor Who, producers are still lamenting her underwhelming fate. After the Fourth Doctor met Leela's race of warrior tribesmen, Leela attached herself to him and became his next companion. The question of “Who counts as a companion?” is a tricky one. Overall it’s an ad hoc combination of different criteria, with allowances made for the exceptions that are intended to fulfil the companion role on a one-off basis. The ranking system is based on whether the departure makes sense for that character, how well it’s built up to, and what it says about Doctor Who in a larger sense. Ground-breaking, intelligent, prescient 1970s drama Doomwatch, now out on DVD, is a British television classic...

Playing on the public's fear that 'this could actually happen', Doomwatch had a veneer of credibility unusual in the escapist television drama landscape of the late 60s/early 70s. This spring sees the most comprehensive haul of Doomwatch episodes released on DVD for the first time. The nickname for the "Department for the Observation and Measurement of Scientific Work", the series first appeared on BBC1 on Monday 9th February 1970 at 9.40pm. It followed half an hour of comedy from Kenneth Williams, which must have surely heightened its dramatic impact.

The series would run in tandem with the early Jon Pertwee era of Doctor Who; the first episode made its debut two days after part two of Doctor Who And The Silurians. The two shows undoubtedly shared a synergy of ideas - not to mention cast and crew.

Tom Baker is to return as the Doctor for a set of BBC Radio 4 Extra audio dramas.

The six-part series, which was produced by Big Finish Productions and recorded in 2012, will be broadcast for the first time later this month.

Featuring a full voice cast, the first episode is titled 'Destination: Nerva', and sees the Doctor and Leela (played by Tenko's Louise Jameson) investigating an alien distress call that appears to be coming from Victorian England.

Their journey through time and space takes them to the newly built Space Dock Nerva, and sets in motion a homecoming that could put an end to the human race.

Nerva served as a location in the 1975 Doctor Who television episode 'Ark in Space', which inspired writer and director Nicholas Briggs to explore the setting further.

Her screen credits include Doctor Who, EastEnders, Tenko and Bergerac - but Louise Jameson has also forged a long and impressive career on the stage, and says performing for a live audience will always be her first love.

Back in the mid-eighties an actor who played "Third Assistant" in a Doctor Who story called The Savages (1966) and the director of another Doctor Who adventure, The Underwater Menace (1967), came together to create one of the BBC’s most successful television shows.

And when they got together, it was murder. Well, not quite. (Though the first episode did feature a victim who would later die, fact fans.) But what they did create was Eastenders.

Broadcast on February the 19th 1985 (in between episodes one and two of The Two Doctors), this creation of Who alumni would go on to share numerous links with the long-running science-fiction for years to come. Even its time-slot owes much to the adventures of everyone’s favourite Gallifreyan.

It may seem a bit early to be re-casting the wonderful Peter Capaldi (long may he reign) but the Doctor Who fandom is all about speculation. Arriving on DVD at the end of the month is a brand new Doctor Who fan documentary, by the name of Who's Changing: An Adventure In Time With Fans.

The documentary will take a look at how Doctor Who fandom has evolved over the years, and there's a sizeable collection of talking heads offering their opinions.. Amongst those featured are Louise Jameson, Sophie Aldred, Jane Espenson, Catrin Stewart, James Moran and Gary Russell.

The film is the work of Cameron K McEwan, who does a bit of writing for us, but is primarily known for his excellent website, Blogtor Who. And there's a trailer for it that he's now released.

The DVD is up for pre-order, and by shopping around, it'll come in comfortably under a tenner.

The Tractate Middoth

Once upon a time, ghost stories were an integral part of the BBC’s Christmas line-up. Mark Gatiss (Sherlock) is attempting to revive that tradition and he took his first steps in that direction with tonight’s broadcast of M R James’ The Tractate Middoth.

I love a good ghost story but M R James isn’t really my cup of tea. That being said, Mark Gatiss did well to turn this short story into a fairly entertaining half-hour of TV. It always helps when you have a good cast and for The Tractate Middoth, Gatiss signed up some big-hitters. The cast included Sacha Dhawan (Outsourced), Louise Jameson (Doc Martin), John Castle (I, Claudius), Eleanor Bron (Ab Fab) and David Ryall (The Village). The bride looks beautiful in her flowing white gown. The groom looks . . . prepared. What could possibly go wrong? Well a lot actually, after all we are talking about the long awaited wedding involving Martin and Louisa at the start of Doc Martin series six. The newly married duo go from being bombarded with confetti to being splattered in mud and feathers. Oh and did I mention the gun wielding nutcase who tries to hold them hostage? As Doc Martin succinctly put it “it’s not exactly the day you were hoping for.” Enough of the spoilers, you’ll have to watch it yourself if you want to see the rest and you can do just that on 10 December.

BBC Two has unveiled official details of its Christmas and New Year schedule for 2013/14.

Mark Gatiss horror drama The Tractate Middoth and documentary Idris Elba: King of Speed are among the highlights.

The Choir's Christmas final will air on Saturday, December 21 at 9pm, followed by The Sarah Millican Television Programme Christmas Special at 10pm and a festive Hebburn episode at 10.30pm.

The Great British Bake-Off is scheduled for 6.30pm on Sunday, December 22, with Christmas specials of University Challenge and Never Mind the Buzzcocks airing at 8pm and 11.05pm respectively.

Christmas Eve programming includes Victoria Wood's Mid-Life Christmas at 8pm and a Qi Xl special at 9pm.

Doctor Who at the Proms will get a Christmas Day outing on BBC Two at 3.15pm, with a repeat of biopic drama An Adventure in Space and Time airing at 4.30pm.
