The '90s saw the mainstream rise of martial artist actors like Jet Li and Jackie Chan, resulting in some of the best kung fu films to be released within the decade. The introduction of such stars and films brought an increased interest in the genre and influenced a variety of American films, including The Matrix. As fans of Hong Kong cinema themselves, The Wachowskis asked famous martial arts director Yuen Woo-Ping to help with their film's fight choreography.
Chan himself has been quite an influence on kung fu films. Starting in the late '70s, Chan was just one of the actors to lead kung fu comedies, which revived interest in the genre within the following decades. Chan and Li are just a few who started working in Hong Kong cinema before moving to American films after their breakthrough. As a result, the best kung fu films the decade...

It’s a relatively quiet week for home entertainment releases, but Tuesday is playing host to one of my favorite films of the year, Ready or Not, which makes December 3rd feel like an early Christmas to this writer. Scream Factory is showing some love to John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China with multiple editions (including the standard Collector’s Edition as well as the absolutely gorgeous limited edition Steelbook), and Konga, one of my favorite cult films (thank you Terror in the Aisles!) is headed to Blu on Tuesday, courtesy of Kino Lorber.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for December 3rd include Boar, Christmas Presence, Game of Thrones: The Complete Eighth Season, Game of Thrones: The Complete Series, and 1 Must Fall.

While John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China is infinitely quotable thanks to Kurt Russell's performance as the imperfect protagonist Jack Burton, every great reluctant hero needs a great villain, and James Hong's portrayal of the evil Lo Pan gave us a character who is just as memorable as his truck-driving counterpart. With Big Trouble in Little China coming to Blu-ray like never before in a new Collector's Edition on December 3rd from Scream Factory, we've been provided with an exclusive bonus feature clip featuring Hong to share with Daily Dead readers!
Taken from "The Soul of Lo Pan" bonus feature on the Big Trouble in Little China Collector's Edition Blu-ray, our exclusive clip below features Hong reflecting on some of his most memorable moments playing Lo Pan, including how Carpenter and his crew used practical effects and ingenuity to pull off Lo Pan's glowing transformation and floating ability.

John Wick 3 director Chad Stahelski has a long history with the entertainment industry. He started his career doing martial arts and received his first big break when he was asked to come in and finish The Crow after Brandon Lee's tragic on-set death. Stahelski and Lee were good friends and they worked out a lot together, so taking on the role after his friend's death wasn't an easy decision, though it is believed that it's what Lee would have wanted. Since then, the entire experience has shaped who Stahelski is as a person and a director.
Brandon Lee was killed on The Crow set due to a series of mistakes involving a blank bullet combined with a dummy bullet, which accidentally left the gun's chamber, striking, and ultimately killing Lee. It is an incident that changed the entertainment industry forever. Chad Stahelski was good friends with Lee at the...

We know The Good Place‘s perky virtual assistant Janet can do just about anything… but we have to admit, we were still surprised to see her kick the stuffing out of a dozen demons in this week’s epic bar fight.

Ip Man 2, from Cine Asia, is a semi-biographical martial arts film loosely based on the life of Wing Chun grandmaster, Ip Man. The film was directed by Wilson Yip and Sammo Hung, produced by Raymond Wong, written by Edmond Wong, and stars martial arts legend, Donnie Yen, who reprises the leading role.
This sequel continues on from events in the first Ip Man film, and covers Ip Man’s life in Hong Kong, which was at the time under British colonial rule, and recovering from the Japanese invasion of China. Ip Man’s main hurdles are his reduced circumstances, British oppression, and rivalry from other martial arts practitioners, including the local Hung Ga master Hung Chun-nam, as played by Sammo Hung.

Jason Statham is intimidating. I mean, that's sort of obvious. He's built a career on it. But part of what I find so interesting about him onscreen has been his resolute refusal to vanish into roles. Jason Statham is one of those movie stars who is a movie star for being a heightened version of himself, and he knows that's his brand, and he absolutely steers into it with the choices he makes. This year, audiences are going to see two radically different versions of Statham onscreen. In Paul Feig's clever and rowdy "Spy," Statham is a perpetually livid CIA agent who cannot believe the agency would send Melissa McCarthy's character into the field when he's available for the job. It's a great fit for him, and his mounting incredulity combined with his near-manic need to tell McCarthy how awesome he is and his surprisingly nimble way with...

They Live was John Carpenter’s follow up to Prince of Darkness and continued his nihilistic streak of polemics against the establishment, providing a darkly comic science fiction tale. This movie revealed that there is much more to Carpenter than just horror and is an underrated film loaded with social commentary from a great director at the top of his game.
The fine folks over at Shout! Factory have done a great job with this presentation, including a nice set of bonus features to please any Carpenter fan, so put on your sunglasses and see the film for what it really is.

Hanna is the new film by director Joe Wright. I’ll admit that his previous films haven’t really been up my alley nor would they ever be covered on this site. So, when I got wind that the director of Pride and Prejudice and Atonement would be directing an action movie featuring a 16 year old girl who has been trained by her assassin father, I was immediately excited to check out what could come of this.
Saoirse Ronan plays the title character of Hanna who lives in a snowy landscape with her assassin father Erik (Eric Bana). Erik is training Hanna to become a great assassin. For what, we really don’t know. Until one day, Erik digs up a container that contains a switch that, once toggled, will divulge their location to an enemy threat. The enemy threat is a woman named Marissa (Cate Blanchett). The switch is flicked and the adventure begins.

If you've watched the recently released preview clips or the trailer for the upcoming thriller Hanna and thought, "is this like a teenage Bourne or something?" there is a reason. While Hanna and the movies do concern two expertly trained assassins, Hanna is directed by Joe Wright (Atonement), who had nothing to do with the Bourne movies. However, Hanna and the Bourne movies do share the same fight choreographer in Jeff Imada.
G4TV's Attack of the Show has revealed a behind the scenes featurette titled "Hanna: The Art of Attack" which features interviews with Wright and Imada as well as Hanna actors Saoirse Ronan and Eric Bana as they discuss some of the movie's fight scenes without (hopefully) spoiling them.

Because of his luck, Rob Hunter has already seen Hanna, and he had some positive things to say which he’ll expand on in review form as soon as the embargo on reviews gets lifted. It’s no surprise though. The film is about a teenage girl who is trained from childhood to be a killer, and to kill one specific person. The talent here is tremendous from Saoirse Ronan to Cate Blanchett to Eric Bana to director Joe Wright. Now, this featurette digs deeper into what Blanchett called “the most terrifying script [she'd] ever read in her life” by looking briefly at the action, the actors, and the motivations behind a young killer. I’m waiting for the longer version that gives more details and does less selling, but this whole damned movie is undeniably cool. Plus, it’s undeniable cool set to a score by The Chemical Brothers. If they did a full feature with Jeff Imada...

Check out this behind-the-scenes look at Hanna with stars Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett. Fight Choreographer Jeff Imada of the Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum also discusses what went into creating the teenage assassin film.
Hanna is Directed by Joe Wright and stars Ronan, Bana, Blanchett, Tom Hollander, Olivia Williams and Jason Flemyng.

Award-winning director Joe Wright creates a boldly original suspense thriller with Hanna, starring Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones, Atonement) in the title role. I had the pleasure of seeing Joe Wright’s fourth feature tonight, the action/drama/thriller Hanna starring Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett, and Eric Bana. Synopsis
A teenage girl goes out into the world for the first time – and has to battle for her life. Director Joe Wright weaves elements of dark fairy tales into the adventure thriller Hanna, filmed on location in Europe and Morocco.
Hanna (played by Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan of Atonement, also directed by Joe Wright) is 16 years old. She is bright, inquisitive, and a devoted daughter.

When MTV News caught up with Facinelli on the Golden Globes red carpet on Sunday (January 16), he revealed what Stewart's Bella is like as a vampire.
"She's doing really well. She looks fantastic," he raved about Stewart's transition to a vampire for the final films in the series. "For some reason, once they put those contact lenses in, you look very statuesque."
Facinelli wouldn't go into detail about shooting the...

Ashley Greene recently sat down with MTV and answered some questions via email about her current work on The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn as well as her other projects this year. In regards to Breaking Dawn, Ashley talks about the fight training, being excited to film the battle with the Volturi, her thoughts on working with Bill Condon and welcoming Bella into the Cullen family. Read more below:
Movie Trailers – Movies Blog
MTV: What “Breaking Dawn” scene are you most excited to film?
Greene: Most excited to film and see would be the big fight sequence against the Volturi. As a cast, we like to do as many of our own stunts as possible, so it’s fun and challenging to shoot those scenes. Jeff Imada, the stunt coordinator, is such a blast to work with as well. I’m learning so much from him.
MTV: Tell us about Bill Condon’s style on set. How does he differ from prior “Twilight” directors?
Greene: “There’s no way to describe what it’s like working with Bill Condon except incredible! He is so professional, patient and a fantastic leader. I get excited going to set every day knowing I get to work with him. Each director has brought such a different energy and perspective to the films. Bill is very relaxed and authoritative, in a good way. I feel very comfortable working with him.
MTV: Kristen Stewart said at the People’s Choice Awards that she filmed some scenes as a vampire. What was your reaction to seeing Kristen as a vamp?
Greene: Glad to have her officially join the Cullen family!

With roles in 'Lol,' 'Skateland,' 'The Apparition' and more, the 'Twilight Saga' star is one of MTV News' 11 for '11.

Ashley Greene has spent the first days of 2011 doing martial-arts training. If we didn't know she was gearing up for some vampire fisticuffs in "Breaking Dawn," we might say the 23-year-old is getting ready to kick, punch and otherwise pound into submission the next 12 months. Because after years spent as a beloved supporting player in the "Twilight" franchise, Greene is set to take her turn in 2011 as one of the series' breakout stars.
The year begins with the debut of the Sundance indie "Skateland," an '80s coming-of-age tale. Then it's on to "Lol," a comedy in which she stars as a bad girl opposite Miley Cyrus. And don't forget about "The Apparition," a supernatural thriller...

It’s not easy making a believable story about a teenage girl assassin, but director Joe Wright seems to up to the task.
Check out the first trailer for Focus Features’ upcoming release, Hanna, which stars Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones, Atonement) as the title character, a girl trained by her father (Eric Bana) to be a perfectly trained assassin. Her world turns upside down when an intelligence operative (Cate Blanchett) targets her for capture.
After speaking with Ronan, Bana and Wright at New York Comic Con in October, I’m excited to see how this one shapes up. Other than the movie having Bourne trilogy fight coordinator Jeff Imada on the case, it also looks to take viewers to some breathtaking locations including Bavaria, Berlin, Finland, and Morocco. Oscar nominee Ronan looks like she’ll do well in this action role and it will be interesting to see her...

Chicago – If there’s one cinematic trope more tired and overused than the apocalypse, it’s the Bible-quoting badass. Everyone from Jules Winnfield to the Boondock Saints have memorably demonstrated that nothing justifies mass-murder quite like the word of the Lord. Yet Eli, the mysterious hero of the Hughes Brothers’ long-awaited thriller, isn’t just armed with a few scriptural quotes. He’s got the whole book.
Despite its mediocre premise, “The Book of Eli” is a surprisingly engaging bit of nonsense, proving star Denzel Washington’s uncanny ability of making any material seem more credible than it actually is. The script by Gary Whitta is pure B-movie hokum, but directors Albert and Allen Hughes inject it with the same invention and audacity they brought to their great 1993 debut feature, “Menace II Society.” Though it’s been nearly a decade since their last film, the Hughes Brothers are still a...

// Denzel Washington is one of the coolest actors around. If he's in your movie, you know you'll get someone who is dedicated to his craft and do his best work possible. Teaming up with The Hughes Brothers, Denzel plays a character that's complex, driven, and willing to kill a bunch of fools if they step to him. In this roundtable interview for The Book of Eli, Denzel talks about being a producer on the film, sword training, his character, comparisons to the wild west and more. Beware of minor spoilers if you know nothing about the film. What made you want to be a producer on this as well? Washington: Well, I don't know how it got to me being the producer but I knew that there was a lot of work to be done on the script and I knew that I needed to help do it. So I...

The Book of Eli's post-apocalyptic tale, which focuses on a man traveling the country in the year 2043 with the last remaining Bible, seems an unlikely one for an actor like Denzel Washington, but the Academy Award-winning actor told Coming Soon he took advice from his son, producer John David Washington, that convinced him to take the part.
He talked me into doing Training Day, American Gangster and now this one. He really got his teeth into the story. He's a very, very spiritual young man and just a unique individual. He got behind it and he wouldn't take no for an answer.
Joining Washington in his quest to keep the Bible safe is Mila Kunis, who was drawn to the character of Solara because of her strength.

A behind-the-scenes video detailing the stunts, particularly the fight sequences, in the Hughes Brothers’ upcoming The Book of Eli recently popped up on Yahoo! Movies. Basically, it’s 2 ½ minutes of directors Albert and Allen Hughes, star Denzel Washington, and stunt coordinator Jeff Imada (fight coordinator for the last two Bourne flicks) talking about standard stuff like the intensity of the sequences and how amazing Denzel was at learning the techniques/doing his own stunts. Toward the end, they also get into some semi-interesting analysis of Eli’s fighting style and how it relates specifically to the character and his motivation. If you check out the vid, you might also catch a few non-behind-the-scenes clips that weren’t in the trailers.
Over the years, I’ve learned to be wary of high-concept actioners, but The Book of Eli is one I’m really looking forward to. It’s got a pair...

Ken Jeong has finally ascended to one of the key levels of celebritydom: getting recognized on the street. Sort of. "I'm getting, like, 'I've seen you in some stuff; I don't know who you are, but you're really funny,' " the actor says with a laugh. It's likely these would-be fans caught one of Jeong's scene-stealing performances in a trio of recent hits. He portrayed surly ob-gyn Dr. Kuni in 2007's Knocked Up and followed up with roles as the grim assassin in Pineapple Express and the haughty king in Role Models. All three characters are antagonists — villains, if you will — but Jeong doesn't necessarily see it that way. "In my opinion, I don't think Dr. Kuni's a villain," he says. "I just thought of him as having a bad day. He's just tired. Or he had reasons to be kind of a dick. I guess that's a good way...
