Watching the cosmic, otherworldly dread unfold in Jeffrey A. Brown's The Beach House was one of my favorite viewing experiences of 2020, so I was thrilled to find out that Brown is back with his next feature-length film, The Unheard.
With the supernatural sci-fi horror film now streaming on Shudder, I caught up with Jeffrey in a new video interview to discuss working with the talented Lachlan Watson, his personal connection to the film's story of hearing loss, and how he brought the film's creepy VHS aesthetic to life on screen. As an added bonus for fans of The Beach House, Jeffrey also talks about what his pitch for The Beach House 2 would have looked like!
You can watch the video interview with Jeffrey below, and in case you missed it, read Cass Clarke's review of The Unheard!

The 23rd annual Boston Underground Film Festival took place at The Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Ma from March 22 to March 26. The genre-blending lineup included premieres, festival favorites, anticipated titles, shorts, and more.
Here’s what I saw at this year’s event…
The Unheard
The festival’s opening night kicked off with the world premiere of The Unheard, which pairs the exciting New England talents of director Jeffrey A. Brown, following up his dynamic debut The Beach House, and writers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, hot off the success of Alexandre Aja’s Crawl. All three were in attendance for a post-screening Q&a.
Hearing impaired since the age of 8 as a result of meningitis, 20-year-old Chloe Grayden undergoes an experimental gene editing procedure to restore her hearing, which coincides with a homecoming to prepare her family’s empty summer house for sale. She’s the first patient in the clinical trial to show positive results,...

Shudder has revealed a trailer for an indie horror film titled The Unheard, the latest creation from the director of The Beach House. It will be streaming on Shudder later this month. Lachlan Watson stars as Chloe, who undergoes an experimental procedure to restore her hearing. She begins to suffer from auditory hallucinations related to the mysterious disappearance of her mother. The director adds: "Our cast and crew have delivered a stunning piece of work and I cannot wait for audiences to take our trip into the strange realms between life & death and silence & noise!" From the writers of the Crawl film. The cast includes Michele Hicks, Nick Sandow, Brendan Meyer, Shunori Ramanathan, and Boyana Balta. This looks unsettling, especially with all the sounds. // Continue Reading ›...

A few weeks ago, we learned that Lachlan Watson, who was recently seen playing Glen and Glenda on season 2 of the Chucky TV series, had teamed up with Jeffrey A. Brown, who made his feature directorial debut with a solid horror film called The Beach House (read our review Here), for a new horror movie called The Unheard. The Unheard will be available to watch through the Shudder streaming service in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand as of March 31st – and with that date creeping up on us, a trailer for the movie has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.
Scripted by Crawl writers Michael Rasmussen and Shawn Rasmussen, The Unheard follows 20-year-old Chloe Grayden, who after undergoing an experimental procedure to restore her damaged hearing, begins to suffer from auditory hallucinations seemingly related to the mysterious disappearance of her mother.

Brothers and screenwriting partners Michael Rasmussen and Shawn Rasmussen provided some fun, creature-based thrillers back in 2019 with Crawl and now they are back with their next script, The Unheard. Directed by Jeffrey A. Brown, who last made a splash early in the pandemic with The Beach House, the first trailer has arrived ahead of a Shudder release at the end of the month.
Starring Lachlan Watson, Michele Hicks, Shunori Ramanathan, Brendan Meyer, Nick Sandow, Boyana Balta, Beckett Guest, and Michelle Violette, here’s the synopsis: “After undergoing an experimental procedure to restore her damaged hearing, 20-year-old Chloe Grayden begins to suffer from auditory hallucinations seemingly related to the mysterious disappearance of her mother.”

Beatle is a quirky loner who refuses to live by society’s rules. Her only human contact is with her psychiatrist and the stripper/hooker she employs once a week. Everything changes the night she meets Athena, a suicidal blonde with a secret.
Guns for Hire is one of those films where you are absolutely sure what is going on, right up until the big reveal at the end, where you suddenly realise you did not have a clue at all what was going on. The twist within a twist within a twist is done so well, I actually did not have a clue that it was coming and was too busy enjoying Guns for Hire for what it was.

I really liked "Mr. Robot" when it debuted, and I'm going to work it into the weekly blog rotation for the rest of this season (give or take interruptions for press tour and late summer vacation). Some thoughts on tonight's episode coming up just as soon as this building has its own fire department... Like I did the last time I wrote about "Mr. Robot," I'm going to bounce around on different topics that interested me with this episode: * This week, in "Is Mr. Robot really Elliot's Tyler Durden?" (aka — and all credit to TV.com for this moniker — "Byte Club"): many mixed signals as to Mr. Robot's reality. At the coffee shop, for instance, another fsociety member nods to him, and he goes to steal the ID of a Steel Mountain employee, but Elliot is doing nothing in that moment, and that could be read as him.

The latest haunted house horror to burst onto the big screen is 2 Bedroom 1 Bath (review), named so for the typical, banal listing description of an apartment.
It tells the story of Rachel (Michelle Hicks) and Kevin Foster (Andrew W. Walker), a couple who have finally found the ideal home where they can build a future and raise their children. They are hoping it’s a fresh start for their troubled marriage, but as they begin to settle into their new digs, their plans are interrupted by strange occurrences.
As it so happens, director Stanley Yung was inspired by true events when he embarked on this, his first foray into full-on horror. We got a chance to catch up with him at the special event premiere screening of the film, and here’s what he had to say about making a scary movie.

Wet Behind the Ears: Alaimo’s Suburban Malaise a Standard Procedure
We’ve come to expect a certain amount of functional dysfunction to be featured in independent films depicting the decomposition of nuclear American families all tuckered out by their dogged insistence on living out the illusion of a proscribed way of existence. You can count Jay Alaimo’s latest film, Chlorine, as an overly familiar example of hitting all the customary checkmarks, including a more pressing and dramatic back story used to tie its disparate characters together.
Issues of class and how we’re conditioned to always hunt for loopholes to score upgrades seems to be an overarching theme but between a handful of moments where Alaimo is trying too hard to score pathos or convey information, the film is a stagnant, emotional plateau, managing only to ingrain us with an apathetic attitude towards its characters.

This was the first episode of the season which looked at two separate cases. In the first, a woman turns up at party, attacked and bloodied; leaving a bloody handprint on the car outside. Her name is Robin Prescott (Michelle Hicks) and Flack (Eddie Cahill) says she only recalled her name after being asked four times and was attacked in Central Park. Mac (Gary Sinise) : "We've got ourselves an 800sq metre crime scene." In the second case, Jordy (Sven Holmberg)is shot. No shell casings are found and Aiden (Vanessa Ferlito) believes the murder weapon to be a revolver. He appears to be a drug user and has track marks on his ankles. The entry wound appears to be larger than a needle. The tissue around the wound is uneven and fibres are frayed outwards. The gun spatter also seems unusual. Mac: "something exited our entrance wound." Stella (Melina Kanakaredes...

What's it like to play Frankenstein one night and his Creature the next? Maddy Costa meets Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch as they tackle Danny Boyle's new production at the National
Danny Boyle is not a man to shy away from a challenge. The proof is all over cinema screens in his latest film 127 Hours, and it's evident in his return to British theatre, where he cut his teeth as a director in the 1980s. Boyle's choice of play – an adaptation (by Nick Dear) of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, opening at London's National theatre next month – might be conventional, but not the way he is presenting it. Two actors will alternate the lead roles – a ploy attempted rarely, possibly with good reason.
"Frankenstein is creating life without women," Boyle reasons. "The idea is to bring two actors as close to that notion as possible. And how do you do that?...

Many expectant parents already have a nickname in mind when naming their unborn child, but for a growing minority the nickname is the name! Linda Rosenkrantz, co-founder of nameberry.com, points out that celebrities like Tiger Woods, Helena Bonham Carter and Mira Sorvino bypassed the full, formal names of Charles, William and Jonathan when naming their sons Charlie, Billy and Johnny, respectively.
What’s more, Tiger and Denise Richards — both of whom have daughters named Sam — are also using the same nicknames for both boys and girls interchangeably. The using a unisex nickname-as-a-name club may include Ethan Suplee and John C. McGinley (with daughters named Billie), Rebecca Romijn & Jerry O’Connell (with daughter Charlie) and Melissa Etheridge (with daughter Johnnie), “but these are miles away from the unisex nickname names of the 60s and 70s like Corey and Jody,” Linda notes. “Today’s versions are mostly short forms of standard appellations,...

Chicago – There was no better show on television in 2008 than FX’s “The Shield” and the seventh and final season is now available on DVD. The dark and often brilliant series about life lived in the gray area between right and wrong had its ups and downs over the course of six seasons but the seventh and final chapter in the life of Vic Mackey was stunningly perfect and I find it hard to disagree with Maureen Ryan of The Chicago Tribune, who is quoted on the cover of the recently released DVD set - “…the most brilliant series finale I’ve ever seen.”
DVD Rating: 5.0/5.0 One of the things I always loved about “The Shield,” a show that I think I have written about more than any other in the decade I’ve been writing about entertainment, was how brilliantly the team behind the show wove together themes and...

Film review: 'Twin Falls Idaho'

"Twin Falls Idaho" is that rara avis in the world of film, a remarkably original work that offers a unique vision of humanity. The feature debut by the highly talented Polish brothers is artistically exciting and meticulously crafted, and one feels the filmmakers' intelligence behind every frame. The film, acquired at this year's Sundance Festival by Sony Pictures Classics, should do well in specialty markets, provided audiences don't recoil from the unusual subject matter.
The story tells of conjoined twins Blake and Francis Falls, played by filmmakers Mark and Michael Polish (who are twins but not conjoined). However, the film is anything but a freak show: "Twin Falls" is first and foremost a love story and then something of a romantic triangle.
The Polish brothers -- Michael directed the screenplay they wrote together -- have been fascinated by conjoined twins since at an early age they stumbled onto the story of original "Siamese twins" Chang and Eng Bunker, who were 19th century circus attractions. In "Twin Falls", they explore not only how such brothers bond and communicate but the themes of human identity and completeness.
What is it like to never be alone? How do you define who you are when you are two? Does one fantasize about being "single"?
Blake and Francis, 25, come to the city to search for the mother Lesley Ann Warren) who abandoned them early in life. Taking up residence in an incredibly seedy hotel, the two celebrate their birthday by ordering a prostitute. Penny -- played by wonderful newcomer Michele Hicks -- is, naturally, floored by their appearance.
Horrified, she flees but returns to retrieve her purse. She then yields to her curiosity and stays. She asks questions, runs errands and finds herself falling in love with Blake. She realizes that Francis is ill and being kept alive by his brother, whose strong heart does the pumping for both bodies.
Through Penny, the movie enters the twins' mysterious, private world. Her presence also acts as a catalyst in the brothers' relationship because, for once, someone has come between them. With her blossoming affection for Blake, Penny -- who has allowed her life to take a downward spiral since giving up her handicapped son -- feels a sense of worth re-enter her life.
The film contains several brilliant sequences, especially a Halloween party at which the twins discover that for this one night they can be seen as normal. An absolutely haunting ending brings home the universal need for love.
Although the film was shot in color, cinematographer M. David Mullen's lighting, Bic Owen's costumes and Warren Alan Young's decors strongly emphasize blacks and whites. This, along with a Depression-era flop house where Barton Fink would feel right at home, evokes a timeless world in which the story unfolds.
Despite an obviously limited budget, "Twin Falls" is a first-class production, right down to the incredible prosthetic attachment.
