Patricia Clarkson has played sinners, saints, and now, the singularly most impactful equal pay activist, Lilly Ledbetter.
Clarkson leads eponymous biopic “Lilly” about the hard-working Alabama tire factory supervisor whose goal was to lift her impoverished family into the middle class. As Lilly endures harassment in her work environment for the sake of the best paycheck in her county, she later realizes that she has been duped — and paid significantly less than her male counterparts — just as her retirement approaches. Lilly earned less than half of what her male colleagues received for 20 years, and she begins a historic fight toward justice to remedy the sexist practice.
As the official synopsis teases, Lilly “discovers that the system has been cheating her, paying her close to half of what the men with the same job were earning. Outraged, Lilly fights this injustice to the Supreme Court, the corridors of Congress, and eventually...

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for “Daredevil: Born Again” through Season 1, Episode 3.]
There are few things as satisfying as a courtroom drama. From the tradition of “12 Angry Men” to “Juror #2” and even the recent, twisted version on “Yellowjackets,” this dramatic sub-genre exemplifies that formula can be consistently entertaining in the right hands.
I read a tweet many years ago about how the best Marvel movies are something else at their core: “Winter Soldier” is a spy thriller, “Ant-Man” is a heist film, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is a teen comedy, and so on. “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 1, Episode 3 is a full-tilt courtroom drama that expertly opens up further storylines while wrapping up its main arc.
After learning that his client Hector (Kamar de los Reyes) is the vigilante known as White Tiger, Matt (Charlie Cox) has his hands full trying to keep the secret and still prepare his defense. He believes that Hector is a good and innocent man,...

Spoilers for "Daredevil: Born Again" to follow.
As star Charlie Cox has stressed, "Daredevil: Born Again" is named that because it's a revival of the previous "Daredevil" TV show, not because it's adapting Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's "Born Again" story. (It isn't.) Mind you, that's not to say the series is ignoring the "Daredevil" comics either.
Unlike some Marvel premieres, "Daredevil" writers and artists got to stroll the "Born Again" red carpet, including Charles Soule, Ron Garney, Chip Zdarsky, Alex Maleev, Michael Lark, David Mack, and the aforementioned Mr. Miller. Absent, though, was Brian Michael Bendis (who wrote "Daredevil" from 2001 to 2006), even though "Born Again" is adapting one of his key stories, "Trial of the Century" ("Daredevil" Volume 2 #38-40).

This article contains spoilers for "Daredevil: Born Again" season 1, episode 3.
Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) has always been a complex guy, as befits a devil who's playing for the side of the angels. The character's first headliner gig in the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to lean heavily into this characterization, depicting his charm, smarts, guilt, and determination with equal gusto. However, when Matt deals with the Hector Ayala murder case with the best intentions at heart, one particular call he makes ends up becoming one of the most stellar MCU examples of sheer moral ambiguity.
In the second episode of "Daredevil: Born Again" (read our review), Hector attempts to stop two men roughing up someone and the ensuing fracas causes one to stumble in front of an oncoming train. The third episode of Daredevil: Born Again is the best episode of the season so far! This chapter focuses mainly on Matt Murdock’s handling of Hector, aka The White Tiger case, and his murder trial of a New York City police officer. This is a powerful episode that deals with socioeconomic issues and themes that come bubbling to the surface. It also ends with a shocking and disturbing murder, possibly bringing an old friend back into the fold.

While war movies can offer a glimpse into major historical conflicts, the unfortunate reality is that the end of a war is just one part of the story for many soldiers. Over the years, there have been many great post-war movies, most of which examine the physical and psychological effects of war on returning soldiers, with trauma, survivors' guilt and society's treatment of veterans all being common themes.
Many of the best post-war movies were made in the years directly following a conflict, and they managed to capture the mood of an entire society. In some cases, these movies don't have to address the war head-on, since the shadows of large conflicts can hang over countries for years in one way or another. Even the best war movies rarely have time to appropriately address the aftermath of war, both on a personal level and on a broader societal scale.

The best Samuel L. Jackson movies and TV shows prove that he is one of Hollywood’s most popular and beloved actors as he has become almost a character himself. Jackson had early success as a theater actor before he got a chance to move into movies with small roles in Spike Lee’s School Daze and Do the Right Thing. From there, he skyrocketed to the top of Hollywood, with his first major breakout role in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction as Jules Winnfield.
That performance made him a major star and he never looked back. Jackson has appeared in the Star Wars franchise as Mace Windu in the prequel series and took on the overarching role of Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he has appeared in countless movies and TV shows over the MCU’s entire run. He also appeared in giant franchise movies like Unbreakable and Jurassic Park,...

It’s ordinary people, and not superheroes, who bring about justice and change in the real world. In “Lilly,” writer-director Rachel Feldman follows the era-defining work of one such everyday woman: trailblazer Lilly Ledbetter, a pioneer from humble beginnings who took her employer, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., to court on the basis of gendered pay discrimination. But while Ledbetter’s contributions toward the fight for equal pay are immortalized with the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 (which essentially states that each unfair paycheck starts a new cycle of discrimination), her legacy sadly doesn’t receive the polished and sophisticated treatment that it deserves in “Lilly,” a puzzling film that can’t decide what it wants to be.
The unfortunate inelegance of Feldman’s film announces itself right at the start, as the movie struggles to establish its tone as a narrative feature that heavily leans into documentary footage.

The highly anticipated adaptation of Stephen King's iconic horror novel, Salem's Lot, has finally landed on Max. Originally set for a theatrical release on September 9, 2022, the film was subjected to numerous delays due to Covid-related issues, which eventually led Warner Bros. to opt for an Ott release. The decision was also influenced by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which affected distribution, but fans nonetheless remained eager to see how the latest horror adaptation would turn out. However, the film proved to be a letdown for those who read the novel or watched the previous adaptations of the franchise.
Certainly, a Salem's Lot film can never achieve what the original novel could, but the most recent adaptation falls short in many aspects, making it one of the weakest entries in the franchise. So, what exactly went wrong, and why is it considered a flawed take on Stephen King's renowned horror story?

The King of Horror doesn't sugarcoat his stories. Many of Stephen King's books include disturbing scenes. While some are well-justified for the purpose they serve in character building, others can feel random.
Kings books, often being very intense, include things from child orgies to animal cruelty. Film and television tend to have a different standard in terms of censorship than books, and what might be acceptable in a book may not be fit to view on screen.

Warning: This article contains spoilers from Salem's Lot and The Dark Tower series.
The 2024 adaptation of Salem's Lot makes a significant change that ruins its most compelling connection to Mike Flanagan's The Dark Tower series. When it was published in 1975, Stephen King's novel about vampires in the town of Jerusalem's Lot was meant to be a standalone story. While Salem's Lot still largely works as its own story, it is also connected to King's The Dark Tower series, which sees many familiar characters, locations, and references from King's works appearing across the multiverse. Indeed, Salem's Lot 2024 has plenty of Stephen King Easter eggs sprinkled throughout.
The Dark Tower was adapted into a 2017 movie starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey as Roland Deschain and the Man in Black, the latter of whom is also known as Randall Flagg, the main antagonist in King's novel The Stand.

The 2024 remake of Stephen Kings iconic vampire story Salems Lot made some major changes to Stephen King's book, and one of the most impactful alterations surrounded the movies handling of the character of Father Callahan. The new remake that went straight to streaming after years of delays acts as a streamlined version of the original source material; the 1979 adaptation was a three-hour-long miniseries, for comparison. Given the shorter overall runtime, characters arcs were either shortened or cut completely, and Father Callahan was one of the primary examples.
In Salems Lot 2024, Father Callahan (John Benjamin Hickey) is shown to be an alcoholic, just as his counterpart in King's original novel is. Father Callahan features in one of the key interactions in the narrative: a one-on-one face-off with Type One vampire Kurt Barlow. Legendary author Stephen King’s vampire novel Salem’s Lot (buy a copy of the novel Here) has received three direct adaptations over the decades. The first was the 1979 mini-series directed by Tobe Hooper, which had a running time of 183 minutes. A mini-series directed by Mikael Salomon followed in 2004, and that one had a 181 minute running time. So when it was announced that Gary Dauberman was going to write and direct an adaptation that would try to fit the story into a single feature, fans wondered how Dauberman would accomplish that… and how long this single feature would be. Dauberman’s Salem’s Lot was finally released through the Max streaming service last week (you can read our review Here), and the filmmaker has said he whittled the story down to a 113 minute film by focusing on the core group of characters and dropping subplots with side characters. Still, turning Salem’s Lot...

Salem's Lot is widely regarded as one of Stephen King's best - and perhaps more importantly, most terrifying - novels, which is why the new adaptation currently streaming on Max simply didn't cut it for the majority of fans and critics.
The movie follows the basic premise, but does not flesh out the main characters enough and is seriously lacking in scares and gore (pretty much every kill takes place off-screen) despite the R rating. It also leaves out some major story elements, including Ben Mears' childhood connection to the Marsten House.
In the book, this haunted house is almost a character in its own right, and is the source of evil in the town of Jerusalem's Lot that attracts Kurt Barlow and Richard Straker in the first place. Max has just launched 'Salem's Lot, an all-new adaptation of the original Stephen King story from 1975. Making the new vampire film was not without its challenges, particularly when it came to filming with real morgue equipment.
In an interview with Horror Geek Life, some of the stars of the new 'Salem's Lot addressed the authenticity of the props used for the morgue scene. Alfre Woodard (Dr. Cody) shared that she was creeped out by filming with genuine equipment which had previously been used by a real morgue. The newest adaptation of Stephen King's 'Salem's Lot has dropped on Max, and it's chock-full of Easter eggs and nods, both to the King of Horror and to the horror genre in general. The long-gestating adaptation was a victim of the Covid-19 pandemic and then the writer's strike, taking years to get to the screen. The long-awaited movie adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot from director Gary Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home) is now available to stream on Max, unleashing a stylish vampire outbreak without much in the way of story. It turns out that there was a much longer cut of the film that Dauberman ultimately trimmed down for a leaner runtime.
The filmmaker revealed in a recent interview with Den of Geek, “My first cut was about three hours. There’s a lot left out. My first draft of the script is 180-odd pages or something because you’re trying to include everything. And a lot of it has to do with a lot of the secondary characters and stuff that I spoke about. So it was sad to see that stuff go, but it’s like a necessary evil.”

After a series of lengthy delays, Warner Bros. and New Line's remake (or re-adaptation) of Stephen King's Salem's Lot is now streaming on Max, and a first look at this latest take on the novel's head vampire, Kurt Barlow, has leaked online.
In the book, Barlow was described as a fairly ordinary-looking middle-aged man, but the character was reimagined as a bald, pale Nosferatu-inspired monster for Tobe Hooper's '70s miniseries. Then, in the 2004 adaptation, the late Rutger Hauer played an interpretation of the evil vampire that was a lot more faithful to the source material.
As you can see from the image below, this new Barlow takes at least some inspiration from the creature we met in the original miniseries - though this version is even more monstrous-looking.

In 'Salem's Lot, the town is a character unto itself, which made it imperative for the 2024 adaptation to find the right filming locations to bring the classic Stephen King story to life. The fictional town of Jerusalem's Lot is located in Maine, which is where King is from and where many of his other books, including Carrie and It, take place. Jerusalem's Lot has been incorporated into a number of Stephen King's other books along with the fictional Maine towns of Castle Rock and Derry.
Filming for 'Salem's Lot began in 2021 and concluded in 2022, with all filming taking place in the state of Massachusetts. Warner Bros. has been keeping writer/director Gary Dauberman‘s adaptation of the Stephen King novel Salem’s Lot (buy a copy of the novel Here) on the shelf for a long time – but they won’t be keeping it there for much longer. The movie, which was supposed to be given a theatrical release back in September of 2022, is now set to be released through the Max streaming service on October 3rd. During interviews with SFX magazine, Dauberman confessed that making this adaptation was more challenging than he expected it to be – and producer Michael Clear confirmed that there are elements that are purposely reminiscent of the Tobe Hooper-directed mini-series adaptation of King’s novel.
This is the third adaptation of Salem’s Lot. The previous two were both mini-series, which aired in 1979 and 2004. This new take on the concept is said to be set in 1975, the same year King’s novel was first published.

Stephen King is celebrating the release of the long-delayed adaptation of Salem's Lot with an excited new post about the upcoming movie. Originally completing filming in 2022, the upcoming Salem's Lot remake is finally getting released on Max after multiple delays in its release schedule. While the movie was supposed to arrive in theaters, its continuous delayed release due to calendar shifts and the 2023 Hollywood strikes resulted in the movie going to streaming instead. However, it's still highly-anticipated due to it being the first movie adaptation of the King novel, following two TV miniseries in 1979 and 2004.
Now, King himself has posted about the Salem's Lot remake, expressing excitement for the delayed adaptation by posing with a framed poster of the film. He can also be seen holding a small toy of Dracula, referencing how the original novel came from the idea of having the famous vampire arrive in America during the 20th century.

After two years of delays, Salem's Lot has landed an early Rotten Tomatoes score, but it's quite a mixed bag for the wait. Expectations were not very high after the film was pulled from its original theatrical debut and placed on the shelf for such a long time, but a lot of critics seem to have been won over by this new take on King's seminal vampire tale.
However, quite a few others were not nearly as impressed, and are not at all surprised that it's heading straight to streaming.

Out of the many names of fictional small towns in Maine that Stephen King created, Jerusalem's Lot (shortened to Salem's Lot) might have the nicest ring to it. The subject of his acclaimed eponymous novel (and a pair of short stories published thereafter), the small town in Maine somehow becomes a tourist destination for a bloodthirsty vampire in his acclaimed book of the same name. The film industry seems to like the name as well, with the book being adapted multiple times, including a new film being released on Oct. 3.

At this moment, it's hard to disconnect the new Salem's Lot from its nearly two-year release delay, during which many feared the film would never, ahem, see the light of day. That's an unfortunate situation. On the one hand, it clearly didn't deserve to sit on the shelf for so long, caught up in the leadership change at Warner Bros. On the other, it doesn't quite live up to the expectations that inevitably built as Stephen King pressured the studio to release it.

Gary Dauberman's "Salem's Lot" has had a bumpy ride. The Stephen King adaptation was originally supposed to hit theaters in 2022. Then it got delayed to 2023. Then it got pulled from the release calendar entirely. Since "Salem's Lot" is a Warner Bros. production, there was a growing fear that this vampire movie would go the way of WB's "Batgirl" and "Coyote vs. Acme" and never see the light of day. King got involved, taking to Twitter and pondering why the studio was sitting on the flick. "Not sure why WB is holding it back; not like it's embarrassing, or anything," the master of horror said. Rumors eventually began to swirl that "Salem's Lot" might skip theaters entirely and go directly to WB's streaming service, Max. Sure enough, the studio finally announced that was the case: "Salem's Lot" is destined to stream on Max this October, just in time for Halloween season.

Revisiting an iconic work by Stephen King takes guts. It’s especially tough when the property has already been adapted by a fan-favorite director. Yet Salem’s Lot looks to do exactly that, reviving the vampire franchise for the first time in nearly twenty years. This time, the King property gets the feature film treatment, hoping to differentiate itself from the 1979 Tobe Hooper and 2004 Mikael Salomon mini-series events. While this Salem’s Lot looks great, the shorter runtime leaves it sprinting through the exposition. It becomes a problem despite moments of brilliance.

Vampires are a staple of Stephen King's books, not just in Salem's Lot but also in his broader universe, and the 2024 movie looks to expand on the lore. Salem's Lot tells the story of writer Ben Mears, who returns to his childhood hometown of Jerusalem's Lot to finish his novel, hoping that the old abandoned Marsten House that gave him nightmares as a child will help inspire him. However, he soon finds that the town he once knew is slowly being infiltrated by a creeping evil that is transforming the townspeople.

Salems Lot movie director Gary Dauberman shared his appreciation for Stephen Kings significant support towards New Line Cinemas upcoming supernatural horror adaptation. This marks the second time that Dauberman has adapted one of Kings acclaimed novels, after previously writing the screenplays for 2017s It movie and 2019s It Chapter Two.
During a recent interview with Total Film, Dauberman confirmed that Kings unwavering support for Salems Lot definitely played an important role in Warner Bros. decision to finally give the movie a Max release. "Im extremely thankful for Steves support," Dauberman said. "Lets just say it provided some shock support for some of the more bumpy portions of this journey and leave it at that." Before moving to Max, the film was originally meant to be released in theaters. However, due to multiple release delays, it was ultimately removed from Warner Bros. theatrical schedule. After a number of lengthy delays, it was recently announced that Warner Bros. and New Line's re-adaptation of Stephen King's Salem's Lot will debut on the Max streaming service on October 3rd, and the first trailer has finally been released online.
The teaser introduces writer Ben Mears (Thunderbolts* actor Lewis Pullman), as he returns to his childhood town of Jerusalem's Lot to do research for his new book. Ben soon realizes that the "haunted" house that traumatized him as a child has some new occupants, and they have sinister plans for The Lot.
Ben joins Susan Norton (Makenzie Leigh), Doctor Cody (Alfre Woodard), Mark Petrie (Jordan Preston Carter) and Father Callahan (John Benjamin Hickey) in an attempt to stop the evil Kurt Barlow before he consumes the entire town.

Better late than never, right? The upcoming feature adaptation of Stephen King’s 1975 horror novel, “Salem’s Lot,” has faced an uphill battle in its journey to the screen. In the works since 2020 and having been shot in 2022, it was originally set to be released theatrically in September of that year, but was pushed to April 2023. The warning signs should’ve been apparent then as Warner Bros., the studio behind the film, also set another horror property, “Evil Dead Rise,” for the same opening weekend. April 2023 came and went and “Salem’s Lot” was still being held back, but by October, in light of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes preventing new content from being made, WB were considering dropping the film on their streaming service Max. They decided not to in that moment, but by February 2024, backlash from fans and King himself seems to have reached a fever pitch.
