Recently, archaeologists made a startling discovery. Excavating a hitherto undiscovered burial chamber in the Great Pyramid, they came across a series of hieroglyphics in which, amid the depictions of ancient pharaohs and Egyptian gods, was a familiar figure: pale, knock-kneed, clad in a pinched grey suit and a red bow tie — the first concrete evidence that Pee-wee Herman has lived among us for thousands of years.

You might think there are too many awards shows. You'd be wrong. Because if they constantly turn out performances like the ten below, we should have a new awards telecast every single day. Here are the ten best awards show performances of 2015. 10. Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake at the Country Music Association Awards, "Tennessee Whiskey" Chris Stapleton is undoubtedly the year's breakout country music star, and he even has a shot at Album of the Year at the upcoming Grammy Awards. This duet with Justin Timberlake was inspired, rad, and a pulsing, soulful version of a bona fide smash. 9. Kelly Clarkson at the Billboard Music Awards, "Invincible" With the possible exception of the #2 artist on this list, Kelly Clarkson is perhaps our most trusted live pop performer. "Invincible" gave Clarkson a chance to belt, endear us with her casual vulnerability, and wow us with some closing notes worthy of another "American Idol" crown.

Filmmaker Liz Garbus was in the audience when Nina Simone performed at the 1976 Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, her first words to the audience being, "You don't understand me, you don't know what I mean when I say I'm tired . . . this is my last jazz concert and I'm graduating to a higher plane." Garbus' latest documentary, a Netflix original titled What Happened, Miss Simone?, is her attempt to understand what the iconic singer and civil rights activist meant by that declaration.

Jack Pack have brought forward the release of their self-titled debut album.
Jack Pack was due to hit stores in September but following the band's performance of 'Light My Fire' on last night's Britain's Got Talent semi-final it will now be released on June 29 via Syco Music.
"We have had an incredible reaction since last night's performance by the band," a Syco spokesperson said.
"So bringing forward the release was the only sensible option."
Jack Pack are Alfie Palmer, Andrew Bourn, Martin McCafferty and Sean Ryder Wolf. The foursome finished in fourth place on last year's Britain's Got Talent.
The album includes reworkings of tracks including Screamin' Jay Hawkins's 'I Put a Spell on You' and Frank Sinatra's 'My Way'.
It also features previously-unrecorded Randy Newman song 'Forever' and two other originals.
The full tracklisting is as follows:

While the rest of his cohort have fallen by the wayside or been absorbed into the Hollywood system, the film-maker has stayed weird, as his new movie of erudite vampire love reveals
The word "hipster" invariably crops up in discussions about American film-maker Jim Jarmusch, not least because he looks the part. He is tall, lean, often wears shades and has a famous shock of hair that started turning silvery grey in his teens; his basso drawl completes the uncanny resemblance to a certain Hollywood great, which inspired Jarmusch to found a jokey secret society, The Sons of Lee Marvin.
Jarmusch is without a doubt the most rock'n'roll of film-makers – although he obliges you to define the term. He has worked with a lot of musicians, either as composers or as actors – Neil Young, Tom Waits, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, hip-hop producer RZA. What happens when you mix splatterpunk icon John Skipp with a one-man surrealistic rock and roll band, two of the filmmakers behind Never Sleep Again, a go-go dancer who gives new meaning to the term "eye candy," and a mutant worm that has the need for speed?
You get magic of course, and that's exactly what the Andrew Kasch and John Skipp directed music video for The Slow Poisoner's new song "Hot Rod Worm" is. Yes, it's even wackier than you think! Buz "Danger Wallick" produces, with camera work from Justin Cruse.

In my review of Ween's 2007 album La Cucaracha (which also happens to be the last time they were mentioned on this website), I referred to them as "musical cockroaches," the kind of scurrying, scrounging band that — much like the titular (and totally gross) arthropod on the record's cover — was capable of surviving nuclear holocausts and subsisting on a bar of soap for weeks at a time.
"In essence, Ween are indestructible," I wrote. "They will be here long after you and I are gone."
It turns out, I was wrong about that last point. Because on Tuesday, Aaron Freeman, better known to bong-rippers and Scotchgard-huffers everywhere as Gene Ween, told Rolling Stone that he was retiring the mantle and ending Ween, saying, simply, "It's been a long time; 25 years.

Though his camp has categorically denied it, Justin Bieber is in the midst of one of those music industry rites of passage that just about every young male star goes through at some point.
No, not the voice change. No, not the fake death story and not the obligatory moving violation in a pimped-out Batmobile.
The singer is currently battling allegations that he fathered a child with a fan, courtesy of a 20-year-old California woman who has filed suit and demanded a paternity test and support for her three-month-old child. Bieber, of course, is not the first star to face this kind of (alleged) baby mama drama. It's happened to such old schoolers as Mick Jagger, James Brown, Sammy Hagar, Tom Jones and Screamin' Jay Hawkins and comedian/singer Eddie Murphy (who admitted to fathering a secret child with former Spice Girl Mel B).
But who has been under the paternity microscope recently?...

House actor Hugh Laurie has revealed that playing blues music has become one of his great passions. Laurie recently released his first blues album Let Them Talk, which features collaborations with Tom Jones and Dr John. The actor said that he ranks Let Them Talk among his most "important" work. "I wasn't born immersed in this music. I've immersed myself throughout my whole life, but that still doesn't really count, you know, when you're having a green card interview; that doesn't really count to say I've listened to a lot of Screamin' Jay Hawkins records - that question didn't come up," Laurie told The AP. "I'm approaching the source of this music that I've loved all my life and I do so with trepidation and a lot of respect. I hope people will believe and understand I'm not (more)...

And then there were five. Thursday night's 'American Idol' (Thu., 8Pm Et on Fox) was an elimination night, and it came down to Casey Abrams and Scott McCreery in the bottom two. McCreery had chosen to sing 'You've Got a Friend' by James Taylor, and Abrams a more obscure tune, 'Hi-De-Ho' by Blood, Sweat, & Tears, in the elimination round.
Song choice could have made the difference, as Abrams, ever the fuzzy individualist, was sent packing. But he went out in style, singing 'I Put a Spell on You,' a song originally written and performed by the highly theatrical Screamin' Jay Hawkins.
Abrams hugged the judges, played to the audience, and directed some of the song to Haley Reinhart, which should only serve to feed the rumors that the two are romantically linked. Hopefully Abrams will now find a record...

The question heading into Wednesday's "American Idol" was no longer why Pia Toscano was booted off so prematurely, but whether the judges would learn a much-needed lesson from her departure. Would Randy, Jennifer and Steven realize their jobs are to dole out expert critiques and sagacious notes, shaping public opinion and letting contestants know what's working and what needs overhauling?
Any hope the judges had recalibrated their critical approach was pretty much lost when J.Lo announced, after a competent but hardly revelatory tune from Scotty McCreery, "Everybody wants us to be tough with you guys, but the truth is y'all are so damn good. All I really want to say is wow." And our last bit of optimism was flushed away as Lopez, during her review of Haley Reinhart,...

It's that very special week of the year, when we collectively realize that "American Idol" contestants were born the same year we saw "Uncle Buck" at the Westbury Drive-In. It's the dreaded "Songs From the Year the Contestants Were Born" theme, or as I like to call it, "Producers Force Thia Megia to Sing a Song That Wasn't Written 100 Years Ago."
But this week "Idol" is also giving back. Portions of the proceeds from the studio recordings will go to helping the relief efforts in Japan. But really, the entire world benefits from watching Steven Tyler sing, "There's something wrong with the world today ... Oh, hi there. Let's talk natural disasters."
Before I point out that 75 percent of the season 10 contestants were born after "Mannequin" hit theaters, and 25 percent of them after "Mannequin 2: On the Move," let's rip right into the top 12's performances.

On their marks! Get set! Go! [Cue the sound of a stalled car.]

It's here! The moment has arrived! Finally we are going to see the "American Idol" contestants perform (pretty much) live and we get to start voting. Who ya got?
J.Lo is looking very chic for her first live show. Steven looks like he just stepped out of an Aerosmith concert next door and popped over to judge. Randy is the Man in Black.
There is a sign in the audience that says "Tourette's Rocks." If that sign-maker had really been thinking, the sign would read "Tourette's [expletive, expletive] Rocks."
Ryan kind of clears things up about the process at this point by saying that after tonight and tomorrow, the Top 5 guys and Top 5 girls advance, then the judges get to choose Wild Cards - presumably a couple of each gender? Since we are 11 or 12 weeks from the finale? Start with 14 finalists, that gets you through 12 weeks leaving two standing at the end.

Hey may have left the upright bass at home this week, but Casey Abrams was no less sexy in his live premiere on 'American Idol' (Tue., 8Pm on Fox). At least, according to Jennifer Lopez.
"She said it!" he shouted gleefully. "I'm so happy!"
It's difficult not to get pulled into Abrams' soulful performance of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You." Of course, it's difficult not to get pulled into all of his performances. There's just something about Abrams that's irresistable.
Not to mention he did this performance mere hours after a stint in the hospital.

"American Idol's" Top 24 is finally underway and as we've said before, we think it's their most talentes group of contestants ever.

There were also predictable ones, namely country crooner Scotty McCreery sticking to what he knows with "Letters From Home...

As is custom with "Idol" performance nights, there were several questionable song choices. (We're looking at you, Jordan Dorsey, who unsuccessfully channeled Usher via "Omg," and Tim Halperin doing a lackluster cover of Rob Thomas' "Come on Over.") There were also predictable ones, namely country crooner Scotty McCreery sticking to what he knows with "Letters From Home...

By the time the top 12 men on "American Idol" make it to the big stage, it's usually pretty easy to tell who is in it to win it and who will be going home after one week in the IdolDome.
And Tuesday night (March 1) was no exception, with some of this season's standouts proving again that they have their eye on the prize. While Casey Abrams and Jacob Lusk soared, James Durbin brought the rock thunder and Scotty McCreery did his country thing, dawg.
And, for the first time in "Idol" history, fans could also vote online for their favorite singer.

Well, it looks like we won't get to see a sexy, winking dance set to Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You" starring Christine O'Donnell after all (seriously, you know this would have happened). Our friends at Gossip Cop have gotten the exclusive confirmation that O'Donnell will be sitting out this season of Dancing with the Stars. Damn. Now I guess I won't watch Dancing with the Stars.* *That statement has nothing to do with Christine O'Donnell being on it and entirely to do with the fact that it's Dancing with the Stars.

Taking cues from Frank Zappa, the Ramones and Nirvana, Gaga carries the torch for the outsider in pop music.

In the 1970s, when disco was in full swing and rock and roll was posturing its way into arenas, four goony, glue-sniffing kids in Forest Hills, Queens, threw on leather jackets and began bashing out two-minute tunes with titles like "Blitzkrieg Bop" and "Beat on the Brat." They called themselves the Ramones, and not only were they probably the first punk band on planet Earth, but they were most definitely outcasts, in every sense of the world.
Of course, the Ramones certainly weren't the first musical outcasts. Theirs is a legacy that reaches all the way back to the dawn of recorded music, from the likes of the Hoosier Hot Shots and Slim Galliard, scatting madman Cab Calloway and the "shocking" Screamin' Jay Hawkins,...

By the time John Lennon met a tragic and untimely end outside the Dakota, he had already cultivated a complex, oft-stand-offish image as a socially aware artist in a constant state of flux. If the previous statement is something you balk at, add yourself to the seemingly limitless cadre of Lennon fans – the cult around the man is prone to dizzying highs and fascinating lows. Lennon remains such a draw as an individual because there seems to be multiple forces that had always pulled at the heart of the artist and his music reflects this – granted the man was a hugely talented songwriter.
Though not nearly as much of a chameleon as one Robert Zimmerman [Editor's note: Bob Dylan, in case you didn't know], Lennon can’t be summed up simply – and director Sam Taylor-Wood smartly avoids making a film about the John Lennon, instead focusing on a John Lennon (Aaron Johnson of Kick-Ass), seen in Nowhere Boy as a rebellious,...

In the event you missed this last week on "Conan," She & Him's cover of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You" deserves a viewing. Never would have guessed that Zooey Deschanel and M Ward would make such a fine match, but they sure do and continue to prove it with performances like this.
"I Put a Spell on You" is one of those great songs that's so familiar and overplayed it's almost completely lost it's impact. After Hawkins' original made it's mark, tons of people have covered it, from Nina Simone to Bryan Ferry. It was probably Creedence Clearwater Revival who made it a radio standard, and it's their version I like to play on vinyl, pitched way down so you can hear that menacing guitar like you're hearing it for the first time, while the girls dance their slow, sinful dances. If you're a big fan of the Deschanel sisters (and who isn't?), then Thursday night (December 9) was a fantastic evening of television for you. Were you so inclined, you could have started your evening watching Emily Deschanel on a brand new — and wholly devastating — episode of "Bones," the hit procedural now in its sixth season. And then you could have stayed up late (killing time by watching the increasingly-creepy "Fringe" or catching the Boston Celtics' last-second heroics against the Philadelphia 76ers) to see the latest episode of "Conan," which not only featured a visit from Sarah Silverman (who had a message for all women about vaginal deodorant) but also ended with a performance by She & Him, the musical project consisting of M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel.
She & Him formed in 2006 after Deschanel and Ward worked together on a little-seen film called "The Go-Getter." Having heard the actress sing in the film "Elf,...

Mystery Train Directed by: Jim Jarmusch Written by: Jim Jarmusch Starring: Masatoshi Nagase, Youki Kudoh, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Joe Strummer, Steve Buscemi, Tom Noonan Everybody has their list of important or great films that for one reason or another they've yet to see. Jim Jarmusch's triptych anthology Mystery Train had eluded me all of these years, but thanks to a fancy Criterion blu ray release, I finally had the chance to check it out. Not unlike Jarmusch's other films, it's a cool, clever and funny piece of classic indie filmmaking that sheds an outsider's light on the cultural significance of Memphis and all of the unusual characters who live there. The film is broken into three separate stories. The first, titled 'Far From Yokohama', finds a young Japanese couple stepping off a train in Memphis with only a red suitcase between them. I had read somewhere that Jarmusch thought...

I'm not much of a fan of Jim Jarmusch's films, but this is only based on the small selection of his films I've seen, most of which are his later pictures while his more celebrated films have eluded me. I haven't seen Stranger Than Paradise, Down by Law or Dead Man, which tells me I haven't really seen the Jarmusch most people think of when his name is mentioned. I have, though, seen his last four films starting with Ghost Dog and ending with last year's The Limits of Control and I haven't been much of a fan of any of them. So, when Mystery Train arrived in my mailbox I felt it would be yet another Jarmusch feature I just wouldn't connect with... I was wrong.
I was gliding along with Criterion's Blu-ray presentation of Jim Jarmusch's Mystery Train. It felt like another Jarmusch feature to me,...

Jeff Beck and Joss Stone delivered one of the most memorable performances of "Idol Gives Back" for 2010.
They teamed up for a sultry version of "I Put a Spell on You," which put Stone's smoky voice at the forefront, highlighted by Beck's bluesy and inreasingly intense guitarwork. They were backed by a four-piece band and the Jubilation choir.
The song originated in 1956, written by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and has been covered famously by Nina Simone and Creedence Clearwater Revival.
We think the Stone/Beck version can stand up to any of those.

British duo put a bluesy twist on 'I Put a Spell on You' for the fundraising effort.

Wednesday night's (April 21) "Idol Gives Back" event featured performances by everyone from the Black Eyed Peas to Annie Lennox, but it was a pair of Brits — and a swampy, often-overlooked American tune that pre-dates most rock and roll — that ended up being one of the night's most memorable moments.
Singer Joss Stone and legendary guitarist Jeff Beck turned in a simmering, smoky take on Screamin' Jay Hawkins' 1956 stomper "I Put a Spell on You" — a song that has been covered by a lengthy list of artists, including Nina Simone and Shane McGowan — which managed to take the soulful, primal urges of the original (and most of the covers) and infuse them with both blues and R&B.
