Spoilers for "Killers of the Flower Moon" follow.
Martin Scorsese is the great American filmmaker of his generation — and I don't just mean in nationality. The American Dream underpins Scorsese's films, whether unfolding in his hometown of New York City or the Oklahoma plains like his latest, "Killers of the Flower Moon." Based on David Grann's non-fiction novel, the film is set in 1920s Osage County, Oklahoma. The indigenous Osage tribe came into wealth upon discovering oil on their land — so white settlers murdered them to steal it. While ringleaders William King Hale (Robert De Niro) and Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) were prosecuted, they avoided life in prison. Mollie Burkhart (Lily Gladstone), Ernest's wife and poisoning victim, dies at the age of 50 without her family, while the Osage's wealth dries up. It's hardly a victory for justice, even if the tribe refuses to be forgotten by history.

Robert De Niro will be doing an Uber U.K. ad campaign, but it will not be tied to his memorable Taxi Driver role.
Reports earlier this week in U.K. tabloid The Sun suggested that the Oscar-winning actor would be bringing one of his most memorable roles, Travis Bickle, to the commercial space. The ads were allegedly set to feature the actor uttering the famous line, “You talkin’ to me?”
The actor’s rep Stan Rosenfield denied that De Niro would be uttering the well-known phrase, and, in a statement, told The Hollywood Reporter that “De Niro’s Uber commercial has nothing to do with his Taxi Driver character.”
The campaign is currently filming in London and is slated to launch sometime later this year, Uber told THR.

Taxi Driver Writer Reacts to Report of Robert De Niro Reprising Role for Uber Ad, Company Debunks It

Taxi Driver scribe Paul Schrader was clearly not thrilled about the recent reports of the film's lead character returning for an Uber ad campaign, so he should be relieved by a new update on the story.
On Facebook, Schrader shared an article responding to recent reports of Robert De Niro reprising his Taxi Driver role as Travis Bickle for a series of promos for Uber. According to the original report, published by The Sun, De Niro was set to be utilizing some of the character's famous lines for the ad, which includes the often-quoted phrase, "You talkin' to me?" Reacting to the reports, Schrader said, "Ouch. Why Bob would do this is beyond my reckoning. But I haven't seen it. If I'm lucky I never will."

“All the animals come out at night – whores, skunk pussies, buggers, queens, fairies, dopers, junkies, sick, venal. Someday a real rain will come and wash all this scum off the streets.”
Taxi Driver will be showing for one week beginning Friday, April 29th at the Hi-Pointe Theater
Before I saw Taxi Driver in 1976 at age 15, I only watched horror films and comedies. Martin Scorsese’s 1976 masterpiece made me realize there were other types of movies out there and I became completely obsessed with the film. I saw Taxi Driver at theaters at least a dozen times in its initial run and remember riding my bike to see it at the Kirkwood Cinema five nights in row. I had the poster on my wall and would play the soundtrack LP over and over, memorizing the (cleaned-up) dialog. I actually went to High School dressed like Travis Bickle in a green army...

"You talkin' to me?"
It's the 40th anniversary of "Taxi Driver" (released on February 8, 1976), the movie that gave Robert De Niro his most famous line, put Martin Scorsese on the map, proved that the pre-teen Jodie Foster was an Oscar-worthy thespian, and (most notoriously) was cited by John Hinckley as an inspiration for his assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan.
In honor of the film's anniversary, here are 25 things you need to know about how Travis Bickle came to be.
1. The script, by Paul Schrader (pictured, left), was semi-autobiographical. After a divorce and a break-up with a girlfriend, he wrote the movie while living in his car, feeling suicidal, obsessing about guns and pornography, and having spoken to no one for weeks. As he recalled in 2013, "Taxi Driver" was "an exorcism through art," and it worked.
2. Martin Scorsese saw the script as early as 1972, but didn't yet have the clout to make it,...

Leonard Harris, known in the New York area as an arts and theater critic for the local CBS television affiliate in the '60s and early '70s, died of pneumonia in Hartford, Conn., on Sunday. Harris was 81. Outside of New York, Harris was known for his role as Senator Charles Palantine in Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver (1976). In the Oscar-nominated drama, Palantine is running for president on a platform of radical social change, at one point sympathizing with Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro), a mentally unbalanced taxi driver-turned-vigilante who wants to rid New York of its "scum and filth." The eventual results aren't pretty. Palantine is also the link between Bickle and the senator's presidential campaign worker Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), a classy-looking blonde with whom Bickle becomes obsessed. According to Harris' New York Times obit, Scorsese knew Harris "through the New York drama scene." Harris played another politician, a mayor,...

In a follow-up to his 2003 documentary The Five Obstructions, which saw controversial director Lars von Trier teaming up with Jørgen Leth to revisit Leth's short film The Perfect Human, von Trier will now team-up with Martin Scorsese to revisit that director's seminal classic Taxi Driver.
The purpose of The Five Obstructions is to force a director to look at one of his earliest films, and remake it five times, while Lars von Trier throws certain 'obstructions' in the way. Obstacles that will greatly change the film, and the way the director thinks about plot, story structure, characterization, location, and other elements that go into making a masterpiece of cinema.
The Five Obstructions: Taxi Driver will ask Martin Scorsese to revisit one of his first great achievements five different times, while Lars von Trier studies the different outcomes. Additional details of the film have not been disclosed at this time,...
